Jakov Ravikovitš Study Proposal All my collections are based on a solid deep research, often mixing the current aesthetics with various cultural elements and contemporary art. I always believed that true fashion should make a statement and have a philosophical compound. Some may assume that my designs are whimsical and satirical but they have also serious connotations and reflect our disturbed reality that we have to face daily. My proposition would be researching the relationship among fashion design, contemporary art and everyday ordinary life in a greater detail. From my current findings, I would like to explore the New Trivial Look supported by poetic banality and photographic realities in the contemporary art exhibitions at the most influential museums and galleries and social networks used by all of us everyday. My goal would be to present very ordinary things from a very different perspective, even changing their initial meaning, and applying to my future collection. Due to the splash of Instagram among the public in the recent years, many very ordinary things such as images of domestic pets, trainings at the gym and selfies are the new norms of people’s everyday life. And it is no surprise that magazines such as AnOther consult its readers what social accounts to follow and get an inspiration from. One of them is a surrealistic Portuguese photographer Teresa Freitas, who is kind enough to share her vision of quite common surroundings with a magical yet realistic twist. In fact, the photography is a hot topic right now when it comes to the upcoming art events. Starting from Bruce Davidson’s black and white photos on social adversity presented in Fundacion MAPFRE up to the recent issue of Scott Cambell’s pillows for the luxury store Colette in Paris, which depict the images of people, places and plants in a very vivid light as if they were enhanced by one of the Instagram filters. Tate Modern Gallery will be hosting Robert Rauschenberg’s works at their premises; this artist is well known for dissolving boundaries between fine art and personal life. One can just wonder if it is the time when depiction of something very usual and ordinary can also be an item of admiration and the new fashion incorporation or presented in a total new, fresh spotlight as the Fountain by Marcel Duschamp. My purpose will be to depict all my recent discoveries into interesting and culminating prints, trimmings, shapes, applications and materials to reflect the mood of the collection to the chosen theme. Filtering and combining different elements will be the transitional stage of the design that has to lead the final result. Probably, further investigation such as research on the aforementioned artists, social networks, magazines will be needed as also the critical and technical assistance from your academia. All in all, the current mood in the art world and pop culture directs to the belief that ordinary things and moments can be a great inspiration as there are more interpretations to what we see on a daily basis. This concludes that the fashion industry soon will be encouraged to implement very banal elements and references in the future garments, expressing the social network life obsession and societal adversities that are still prevalent in the modern society. My goal is to present these notions in an interesting, cohesive and technically advanced collection that would be poetic and yet remorsefully banal in an artistic sense.
