Your guide to our Personal Tutoring System

www.anglia.ac.uk/personaltutor

our Personal Tutor plays a vital role in Y helping you make the most of your time at our university, both academically and personally. They are your main academic contact within your Faculty, helping you understand university life and supporting you during your time with us.

Your Personal Tutor will: n Provide advice on your academic progress and development, helping you reflect on your skills and experience and maximise your opportunities; n Help you adjust to university life by providing encouragement and support; n Make sure you are aware of the specialist support and guidance available to maximise your potential. Your Personal Tutor is not expected to be an academic specialist in all areas you are studying but they will have a commitment to improving your learning. If they don’t have the information themselves, they will know who will be able to help and will point you in the right direction.

2

You can talk to your Personal Tutor about: n Your successes and how well you are doing; n Any study support needs you may have; n Developing your employability skills or getting part-time work while studying; n Opportunities to engage more fully with university to get the most from your experience. Your Personal Tutor will refer you to the appropriate service for any difficulties you may be experiencing such as accommodation issues, money problems or personal issues. They can also direct you to our Faculty Student Advice Service if you need to know about our mitigation process or need to ask for an extension to an assignment deadline. Even if your studies are going well, still use your Personal Tutor. They are here to help you succeed and if you are doing well they can help you do even better.

Personal Tutoring System How do I find out who my Personal Tutor is? You’ll be told who your Personal Tutor is as part of your Induction Programme. Your Tutor’s name should also appear in the home page of your e-Vision account. If it is not there, or you would like to change your Tutor, please contact your Faculty Office. How do I contact my Personal Tutor? At your first meeting, your Personal Tutor will discuss with you how best to keep in contact. Tutors have office hours during the semester when they’re available to see students, but it may be that email contact or an online discussion would be more appropriate. The schedule outlined shows when you and your Tutor will need to be in contact. Do remember though that any email contact between you has to be via your Anglia Ruskin email account as set out in our Student Charter. This helps us to know that it is actually you we are in touch with. Scheduling of tutorials Note the difference in scheduling personal tutorial sessions and group meetings. Group meetings will be scheduled by your personal tutor (or other faculty nominee) so that these sessions will be in your formal timetable. In contrast, it is your responsibility, following consultation with your Personal Tutor, to arrange your individual tutorial sessions.

Is there anything I need to prepare before meeting my Personal Tutor? Your Personal Tutor is likely to be a busy person with a range of academic responsibilities, so to make the best use of their time and yours, do prepare for your meetings with them. Your Tutor will talk to you about what degree classification you want to achieve and your career aspirations. Your Tutor will help you identify academic targets and highlight personal skills development which will enhance your employability and life skills. It’s important you use these opportunities. It is your Personal Tutor who will be your referee for any future job and study applications so it’s important they know who you are and about your achievements. Questions to ask yourself before MEETING YOUR PERSONAL TUTOR To make the most of your first meeting with your Personal Tutor, think about what you want to achieve during your time here. n What do you want your final result to be? n How motivated are you about your studies? n Where do you want to be in five, ten or even twenty years’ time? n Do you need any additional support to achieve this? n Do you have any worries or questions about university life?
