Help Save the Planet

By thrifting you’re not only buying secondhand clothes at a decent price, you’re also helping the environment. By buying clothes that are already made, you’re reducing the production of cotton and other materials used to create clothing.

Letter from the Editor “Fashion has always been something that I’ve had an interest in. I’ve always felt better and been able to get more accomplished when I felt comfortable in what I was wearing. My mother always used to tell me, ‘If a woman feels comfortable and confident there’s nothing she can’t do,’ and that’s something I’ve always stuck by.” - Jamie Ellsbury

These pictures show the process of finding the perfect articles of clothing.

Thrifting Tips 1.

Most Goodwills restock on Thursdays so be sure to go on Fridays to find the items you want.

2. Prices vary

depending on what store you go to because each item will be priced differently depending on the location of the store.

3. If you’re at a

Goodwill, pay attention to the two colors of the week. Typically, there will be a Buy One Get One color and a ninety-nine cent color that change weekly.

4.

Check the labels of clothing to research the item you’re thinking about buying. Sometimes you can find name brand items in great shape.

5.

If the label on your clothing is sewn in, the item is more than likely an item of more value.

6.

Shop off-season for clothing items. You can find more winter/summer items shopping in the opposite season because people are probably buying for the current season.

7.

When you’re shopping, look for the potential an item has. For example, if the length of a shirt feels awkward you could crop it and pair it with high-waisted jeans.

8. Check every rack

regardless of size. You might find something you like that got mixed in the wrong section.

9. If you don’t love

the item, don’t buy it. Just because it’s a great deal, doesn’t mean you should buy it.

10. Look for wear

and tear, or stains. Some items could look okay at first glance, but when you take a closer look they might have rips, tears, or stains.

DO

- Try on the clothes before you buy them. This is important to remember because almost all thrift stores have a no exchange or return policy. - Make sure that you love all of the items you are about to buy. It doesn’t matter how great the bargain is, if you feel like you won’t wear the item once you take it home, don’t buy it. - Read the tags. You can see how you will need to take care of the item by reading the tag. For example, if an item needs to be dry cleaned it will say so on the tag. - Pay attention to brands. Most of the time when I’m looking at items, I look at the brand first. It’s always nice to find significant pieces you know are going to last and you can usually tell that by the brand.

- Pay Attention to deals. At most Goodwills they will have a color of the week for tags. Each Goodwill is different, but they should have at least one color that gives half off of an item with that color tag. The Goodwill in Chickasha usually has two colors each week, one will be half off and the other will be buy one item get another item for free. - Ignore some of the sizes. Try on everything even if you think it will probably fit you. Sizes vary depending on brands and it doesn’t hurt to try something on. - Learn to keep hand sanitizer with you if you’re going to multiple stores and digging through items.

- Keep an open mind. Have an imagination when you look at items because you can always fix an item to make it trendy or something that you would love to wear.

DON’T

- Be sure to see the potential the item has. Don’t be quick to say no, instead think of how you could make the item better. - DO NOT wear an item before washing it. It’s okay to try them on, but you should definitely consider thoroughly washing the clothes you thrift before wearing them all day.

- Stick to the section of your sex. Sometimes the best items are found in the section of the opposite sex. Don’t be afraid to look throughout the store.

- Have an idea of what you’re looking for. It’s okay to have specific items in mind, but be sure to have an open mind when it comes to finding new items.

How To Thrift Handbags The handbags pictured on this page were both purchased from a Goodwill. Both handbags are designer and have little to no damage. When you thrift handbags it’s important to check the bottom of the bag, as well as the seams. The inside of the bags may have stains, but you might be able to remove them depending on how bad they are.

Pretty Little Things The Thrill of Thrifting Sometimes the most fun part of thrifting is finding pieces that you never expected to find. When you thrift you never know if you’ll come out empty handed or leave with the best find yet. This could mean finding something with great value or finding a shirt that fits you just right. Either way it sounds like a pretty great deal.
