The lakes are also home to a vast collection of ornamental fish, which can be hand fed. Burnby Hall Gardens provide 9 acres of changing vistas, which include a woodland walk, Victorian garden, a Secret garden, extensive rockeries, shrubberies and a fine collection of ornamental and indigenous trees. The Stewart Museum has been completely refurbished. There are now state-of-the-art display cases that show off to their full advantage all the artefacts Major Stewart collected on his world tours. Fine trees, woodland walks, garden trails, rockery, extensive shrubs and roses. Set in beautiful countryside at the entrance to Wensleydale. These fine gardens feature a choice of maples planted beneath ancient yew trees. Impressive daffodils in early spring and over 6,000 tulips planted annually. The reflection ponds and beckside plantings are a recent development. We offer groups an exclusive tour of Constable Burton, giving a unique insight into a Hall which is not open to the general public. To complete the experience enjoy a guided tour of the gardens. The brainchild of Mr C.R.Armstrong O.B.E was originally built as a private folly but due to public demand was subsequently opened. A unique labyrinth of Tunnels, Chambers, Follies and surprises created in a 4-acre garden in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. The Temple of the underworld, the eye of the needle, a huge pyramid made of translucent glass, Paths and passages that lead nowhere & extraordinary statues at every turn. There are decisions to be made and tricks to avoid. A day out with a difference, which will challenge and delight Children of all ages. We now have self catering accommodation available. The garden produced fruit, vegetables and flowers for Duncombe Park but fell into ruin after its Victorian hey-day. In 1999 the charity was established to restore the garden and provide horticultural therapy and a tranquil healing environment for those in need. A plantsman’s garden including 250 varieties of Clematis, 52 Yorkshire apples, outdoor vineyard and 34 indoor Victorian vines, Victorian glasshouses, a Secret Garden, a Paeonia Garden, dipping well and a newly redesigned central herbaceous border. Plant nursery, vegetarian café, ethical shop and Craft workshops. The Arboretum has 66 Champion Trees (the biggest in Britain). Spring brings fantastic displays of daffodils, lilac, cherry blossom and bluebells, which are followed by wildflowers. Bring a picnic and relax in our picnic area or wander along one of the many trails. Autumn brings acres of spectacular colours. There are many events throughout the year, see our website. The Bird of Prey and Mammal Centre has birds from around the world with 3 entertaining flying displays a day (lots of audience participation!). Described in The Times as “a gem”, every aspect of this garden speaks of quality. “It’s bold and beautiful – a must if you are heading to Yorkshire” Toparius. Formal house gardens, rock garden and woodland walk also open throughout the season. Scampston Hall contains a fine collection of paintings, porcelain and furniture and house tours are often led by the owner. The combination of period house and gardens set in an C18th ‘Capability’ Brown landscape, together with the C21st planting in the Walled Garden and an excellent restaurant, make for a wonderful day out. The estate is now in the process of being restored - rare formal gardens have been rediscovered, national collections of Rhododendrons, Camellias and Magnolias enhanced; and over 100,000 bulbs planted to create a carpet of colour. With its atmospheric views, woodland walks and majestic follies - including a new children’s playground, and a dramatic viewing platform at the top of a castle folly 600 feet above sea level - there is something to enjoy in the gardens throughout the year. Over 500 acres of historic parkland can now be explored via the Monument Trail, which links several restored follies and native woods, through the beautiful countryside of Stainborough. The breathtaking landscape provides scenic vistas, lakes, historic estate buildings and bridges, and is a stunning backdrop for over 50 sculptures sited in the open-air. The award winning Visitor Centre provides a relaxing base from which to explore the stunning surroundings and includes a restaurant with viewing balcony, contemporary design shop and auditorium. Four indoor galleries, including the magnificent Underground Gallery, present a changing programme of international sculpture exhibitions. Admission to Yorkshire Sculpture Park is free. Completed in 1399 its scars bear testament to over six hundred years of history including being besieged during the Civil War and Mary, Queen of Scots, imprisonment. There is a mediaeval garden, including herbs, roses, a vineyard and maze. The tea room provides tea and cakes, as well as sandwiches and light lunches. Wedding ceremonies and receptions can be held here, as well as parties, corporate events and themed activity days for children.

Highlights include an impressive gateway, a vast hall, a mediaeval kitchen, used until 1954 and a splendid Victorian octagonal drawing room that has re-emerged as one of the most striking interiors from the 19th century. Throughout the castle the rooms display fine furniture, impressive artworks and elaborate architecture. Visitors can also enjoy the deer park, walled gardens and carriage collection. Part of the stables have been converted to a tearoom, where former stalls have been incorporated to create an atmospheric setting. Events take place throughout the summer. Opening times: Easter: Saturday 11 to Monday 13 April; May, June and September: Sunday to Wednesday (Guided tours Monday to Wednesday); July and August: Daily EXCEPT Saturdays. Also open Bank Holiday Saturdays. The guided tours are hugely entertaining. Look inside some 16th century books, try on the Royal Greenwich Civil War armour and discover the secret priest’s hiding hole. Thomas Ingleby saved Edward III’s life. Francis was put to death for being a Catholic priest and Sir William was implicated in the Guy Fawkes Gunpowder Plot. ‘Trooper Jane’ held Cromwell at pistol point in the Library. Try our special children’s tours. The 5 acre walled garden contains tropical hot houses, herbaceous borders and collections of herbs, rare vegetables and fruit trees. In Spring 150,000 daffodils and narcissi create a riot of colour, and the National Hyacinth collection blooms in April. Enjoy the children’s play trail, and explore the lakeside walk and deer park. The castle gift shop sells cards, presents and mementos and you can retreat to the Castle Tearoom for a pot of tea, snack or meal. Stroll into the village: there are several shops, an art gallery, a farmyard museum, an ancient church and The Boar’s Head, which has comfortable bedrooms, a guide rated restaurant, bar and beer garden.

Barley Hall 2 Coffee Yard, Off Stonegate, York YO1 8AR Tel: 01904 610275 Email: barleyhall@yorkat.co.uk www.barleyhall.org.uk Map Ref 8 Barley Hall is a stunning medieval townhouse, once home to the Priors of Nostell and the Mayor of York. Until the 1980's the house was hidden under the relatively modern façade of a derelict office block. Only when the building was going to be destroyed was the amazing medieval building discovered and its history uncovered. The building has now been lovingly restored to its original splendour with stunning high ceilings, beautiful exposed timber frames, and possibly the only horn window in England. It has been decorated to replicate what it would have looked like as the Snawsell home around 1483 and boasts a magnificent Great Hall. Visitors to Barley Hall can make themselves at home and sit on the chairs and handle the objects and experience what it would have been like to live in Medieval England.

The journey begins in the gardens, restored to their Victorian heyday appearance featuring lawns, formal bedding, woodland, wild rose and fern dells as well as the Grove with paths, banks and bridges, winding over and under each other revealing many different vistas. Then enter the hall for a unique take on the country house; shown “as found” in the late 1980s, with everything from high Victoriana to 20th century kitsch, 150 years of family life is revealed. The changing use of the house is tellingly highlighted by the two kitchens, one Victorian with an impressive range oven, the other smaller and cosier, used as servant numbers dwindled. New additions to the collection are the mummified hooves of the famous racehorse Rataplan, who was owned by the family. Newly opened children’s playground. Opening times: Closed 24-26 Dec and 1 Jan. The Hall is filled with treasures collected and commissioned by the family over the centuries – original Elizabethan carving and plasterwork and a marvellous collection of impressionist paintings. The Hall is surrounded by lawns and yew topiary bushes while the award winning walled garden has a potager, maze, jungle garden and coloured gardens with giant board games. The fun filled courtyard contains imaginative gifts, plants and dried flowers from the walled garden, and a children’s play area. The Farmers' Food Store is packed with seasonal Yorkshire produce and fruit and vegetables from the garden. Enjoy freshly prepared meals in our Impressionists’ Café and indulgent treats in the ice cream parlour. Visitors are offered unrivalled access to more than 30 rooms of faded splendour filled with fine furniture, paintings and sculpture, a library of 5,000 books and a remarkable 18th century 'cabinet of curiosities'. In 2009 visitors will once again be able to wander round the 18th century stable block and take a look inside the recently restored Orangery. Light refreshments are available in our Stables Tea Room or you could bring your own picnic and relax on the lawns and play draughts or croquet by the Orangery. The more energetic could explore our magnificent parkland, pastures and wildfowl lakes. Opening times: Easter Saturday to 29 October Saturday to Thursday inclusive. The Great Staircase is a positive tour de force with its exquisite Venetian Window, wrought iron and decorative plasterwork.
