ohn Ingilby (3rd son of Sir William Ingilby, K nt: of Ripley (see see Ingilby of Ripley part I) was Governor of Leith in Scotland in the time of Henry VIII and Edward VI. Lived at Acomb Grange near York and at Hutton Rudby near Yarm, he purchased the Manor of Clapham along with Clapdale Hall and its Appurtenances from George Clapham of Beamsley Esquire and Gresham Clapham his son and heir, in May 1572, for the sum of Four hundred pounds. He also purchased the Manor of
Lawkland along with Lawkland Hall and its Appurtenances from P eter York of M iddlesmore Esquire, in 1574, for the sum of Four hundred and twenty pounds. He was Lord of the Manor of Hutton Rudby. He was born--He married Firstly ANNE daughter of William Clapham of Beamsley, Esquire. (See Pedigree of Clapham part III) III She was married firstly to Thomas Thwaites of Marston. She was married secondly to Francis Gale of Acomb Grange near York who died 1561

and by her had issue. He was buried at Rufforth near York on 9th February 1561. She was married thirdly to John Ingilby, Esquire. He married secondly ALICE, ALICE sister to Sir Thomas Layton, K night of Newsham and widow of Leonard Coignievs son of William Coignevs. But by her had no issue. His Will is dated 15th December 1608. He was buried at Hutton Rudby on the 17th

He was born in 1574. He married Firstly MARGARET daughter and heiress of Nicholas Townley of Royle in the County of Lancaster who was High Sheriff for that County in 1632 and married Isabell daughter and heiress of John Woodrof of Bank Top near Burnley on the 4th of February 1606. I ISABEL INGILBY M arried to Richard Sherburn of Stoneyhurst in the County of Lancaster and had issue: - (see Pedigree of Sherburn part III). There is the following inscription on one of the M onuments in M itton Church - “S Sacred to the pious memory of Richard Shireburn of Stonihurst Esq, and of Isabel his wife, daughter to John Ingleby of

Lawkeland Esq (by M argaret his daughter and heir in blood to Nicholas Townley of Royle in the County of Lancaster, Esq and likewise heir to Isabel, wife to the said Nicholas Townley, daughter and sole heir to John Woodrof of Bank-top in Burnley within the same County, Gent) by whom he had issue Richard, Elizabeth married to William Weld of Compton-B Basset in Wilts Esq and died Jan 10th A.D. 1688; Catherine who deceased in her infancy, and Sir Nicholas Shireburn (now of Stonihurst, Bart.). This Richard built the Alms-house upon Hurst Green in this Parish and left diverse charitable gifts yearly to the several townships of Carleton, Chorley Hamelton in Lancashire, Wizelworth, Guisley, in this County, departing this life (in prison for loyalty to his sovereign) at M anchester Aug 16th AD 1689 in the 63rd year of his age. And the said Isabel (by whom at her own proper charge these four statues were erected) died April 11th AD 1693, whose mortal remains are together near unto deposited.�

The following is from an entry in the Leyland Register: Register - These are to certifie all whom it may concern that as from due intimation of an intended marriage between Arthur Inglebie of Clapdale in ye Countie of York and Margaret Ffarington daughter of William Ffarington of Shaw Hall in ye Countie of Lancashire Esq and ye Ff Ff said Arthur Inglebie and M argaret Ffarington coming this day before me and fixed for their willingness to Ff marriage and contracted to each other according to form and of ye Act of Parliament of ye 24 of August 1653 and four of the Justices of the Peace for ye said countie of Lancaster have accordinglie declared to the honour of ye said Act to show them to be husband and wife together in ye presence of John Fleetwood, Henry Page 6

In the Registers at Clapham is the following: - The intention of Arthur Ingilby of Clapdale in the Parish of Clapham and Margery Farington of Shaw Hall in the P arish of Leyland in Lancashire to marriage were in the P arish Church of Clapham published upon the 17th and 24th and the last day of December 1654 being the Lord’s Day Arthur Ingleby and Margery Ffarington by the Register of Clapham published the three several Ff Lords Dayes aforesaid and were in the presence of Christopher Thornton John Thompson and others marryed before us the third January 1654. In an old MS formerly belonging to William Ash of Clapham and now to John William Foster of Horton-inRibblesdale is the following: - An Eligie upon ye Death of Major Inglebye esq, written by Jo: P rocter of Bordley Hall (his Lieutenant) 1701: Not sigh, nor groane, nor sob, nor shed a tear, For thy kind friend, ye lost no equall here; In grateful muse, constraine thy trembling pew, To tell ye world, hee was ye best of men; Great in desent, no less in noble birth, In manly deeds, beloved by men of worth; The sick and lame, and thos that could not see Crawled to his Hall, and found his charity; His heart lay open to receive the poor Their pierceing prayers unbolted still his door; For which his soul doth Heavenley Joys inherit, With a true portion of Elijah’s spirit; To write his true desent no mortall can Hee had all virtues to compleat a man; Ink is too black, for to record his name, And groanes want Art for to divulge his fame, Hee was my friend promoting still my good, Nor want of fears Ile write his praise in blood, But all’s in name here nothing can we have But ye cold welcome of an earthly grave, Where silence keeps ye door: yet every hell In spite of death, bids Inglebye farewell. OLUMBUS INGLEBY lived at Austwick till his brother Arthur went to reside at Lawkland Hall when he removed to Clapdale Hall and lived there till the death of his sister-in-law M argery Ingilby, after which he resided at Lawkland Hall. He was baptized on the 28th September 1642 at Clapham. He married ANNE sister of Joseph P rocter of Leeds, 7 December 1676. He was then 32 years old and of Leeds. She was born 1651 of Leeds or Wakefield. She was buried on the 25th May 1737 at Clapham ~ ‘JJoseph Procter ejus frater jurat fuit’ He was a Cloth-worker. In the depositions of York Castle is the following: - “Columbus Ingleby, Gent. for M urder August 4th, 1662, an inquest on Brian Redman of Ingleton. On August 2nd Columbus Inglebie of Lawkland Hall, Gent. shot him with a pistol. We have no account of this affair. M r. Ingleby was tried and acquitted.” He was married on 9th December 1676 at Leeds Parish Church. He was Lord of the Manor of Lawkland and Thorpe and Wycliffe. He was buried at Clapham on the 15th of May 1716.

III The marriage settlement is dated the 29th of May 1701. He was one of the Non-JJurers who refused to take the oath of allegiance to George I. His Will is dated the 18th of September 1743. He was buried at Clapham on the 28th of September 1743. She for sometimes after her husband’s death lived at Lancaster. Her Will is dated the 2nd of March 1755. She was buried at Clapham on the 6th February 1759.

He afterwards lived at Dauphiw Lee near Lancaster where he died unmarried and was buried at Clapham on the 10th of September 1788. ANNE INGLEBY baptized at Clapham on the 7th of March 1730-1. She lived with her brother Thomas Ingleby at Clapham and died and was buried there on the 17th of June 1773.

Lawkland for two hundred pounds for the relief, support and maintenance of a resident Roman Catholic priest in the township of Lawkland. He married ELLEN daughter and heiress of Thomas Abbotson of K ilnsey Hall in the County of York (by whom he had the K ilnsey Estate) on the 2nd of June 1752 at Rylstone. His Will is dated the 17th of March 1789. He was buried at Clapham on the 19th of November 1801. She was buried at Clapham the 12th of April 1795.
They had issue: THOMAS INGLEBY born on the 31st of December 1756 at Austwick and buried on the 6th of March 1779 at Clapham. Baptized at Conistone on the 2nd of June 1756-7. He died unmarried of sun stroke between Poonamalee and Trichenopoly in India whilst on the march on the 4th of June 1818 and was buried at Poonamalee. IR CHARLES INGILBY, K night of Austwick Hall, 5th son of John Ingilby Esquire of Lawkland Hall, was baptized on the 20th of February 1644. He was married to ALATHEA only daughter of Richard Eyston of Saxton in the County of York

He was also buried at Clapham on the 6th of August 1719 without any memorial. They had issue (see p27). “Charles Ingleby was admitted a M ember of the Gray’s Inn on 25th of June 1663 and took his degree of Barrister in November 1671. Being a Roman Catholic, he was involved, in February 1680 on a charge of being concerned with Sir Thomas Gascoign in a plot against the K ing and committed to the K ing’s Bench prison; but on his trial at York in the following July he was acquitted as Sir Thomas had been before. After the accession of James II, he was constituted, on the 23rd of April 1686, a Baron of the Irish Exchequer, but declining to go to that country he was in May of the next year made a Sergeant-at-L Law, and on the 6th of July 1688 was appointed a Baron of the Exchequer of England, when he received the honour of K nighthood. One of the effects of James’s apprehensions on the landing of the Prince of Orange was to supersede Sir Charles in the following November, before he had been four months in Office. Returning to his practice at the Bar, we find him present at York Assizes in April 1693 when he was fined forty shillings for refusing to take the Oaths of Allegiance to King William.” (see Foss’s Lives of the Judges). Charles Ingilby had a Commission as Colonel in the Army granted to him in 1667 by Charles II. He was knighted on the 30th of July 1688 by James II at Whitehall. He was amongst the Catholic non-jurors who refused to conform to take the Oath of Allegiance to George I. ((- : In Luttrell’s ‘B Brief Relations of State Affairs from 1678 to 1714’ are the following – “1679-80. Vol I. p34. February – One Charles Ingilby, esq., a Barrister of Graies Inn was committed to the K ing’s Bench Prison, for being in the plot, on the testimony of M r. Boldron.” – “(p51). At the assizes in York, the 24th July. The same assizes the Lady Tempest (daughter to Thomas Gascoign) and M r Charles Ingleby came to there trial for high treason on account of the plot, and were by the Juries acquitted.” – “1681 April (page 402) The 28th, Sir Richard Allibon and Charles Ingilby Law, came to the Chancery Bar, esq., both of Graies Inn, having the K ing’s Writ to goe out Sergeant’s-at-L attended by the gentlemen of Graies Inn, where they took the Oath of Sergeant; which being over, they went into the Treasury of the Common P leas; the ceremonies over there they went to the Common Pleas Barr, and counted there, and gave rings with this motto, Rega Lex; and afterwards entertained the Lord Chancellor, nobility, judges, sergeants and others at dinner at Sergeants Inn in Fleet Street.” – “1688 July (p449) the 4th: M r.
