Part Ia: Ingilby of Ripley, Kettlethorpe, Harrington and Kirkleatham. IR JOHN INGILBY of Ripley Castle, 4th and last Baronet (see see part I p27) died unmarried and was buried at Ripley on the 20th of August 1772. By his last will dated the 11th of July 1770, he left his estates to his two illegitimate sons John Wright and Henry Wright begotten of Anne Wright otherwise Wilkes, widow of Tichfield Street, Mary-le-bone in the county of M iddlesex, and whose maiden name was Riggs. These two sons John Wright (see below) and Henry Wright (see p4) were also under the said will to assume the name and arms of Ingilby, which they accordingly did by a special Act of Parliament.

o IR JOHN INGILBY (alias John Wright) of Ripley Castle, Baronet was born on the 9th of May 1757. He was married on the 25th of October 1780 to ELIZABETH daughter and heiress of Sir Wharton Amcotts, Baronet of K ettlethorpe P ark in the county of Lincoln, at K ettlethorpe. His Baronetcy was revived by patent dated the 24th of March 1781 and gazetted the 12th of June 1781. He was High

Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1782. He was Lord of the Manors of Ripley, Dacre and North Deighton. The Manor of Armley was sold by his trustees in 1780 to different purchasers, the manorial rights being purchased by M r Thomas Woolrich. He was educated at school at Acton in M iddlesex and afterwards at the Charterhouse. He died on the 14th of May 1815 and was buried at Ripley. Died at Lincoln aged 58. She died at Brighton and was buried at Harrington in 1812. Page | 1

They had issue: 1 JOHN INGILBY baptized at Ripley on the 13th of August 1781 and died on the 10th of December 1799 at Bristol. 2 CHARLES AMCOTTS INGILBY baptized at Ripley on the 13th of June 1782 and buried there on the 15th of the same month. 4 VINCENT BOSVILLE INGILBY INGILBY baptized on the 21st of December 1792 at Ripley and was buried there on the 8th of February 1793. 3 SIR WILLIAM INGILBY (see p3) ELIZABETH INGILBY was born on the 11th of May 1784 in Petergate, York. She died on the 13th of June 1854 at St. Leonard’s P lace, K ensington and was buried at Kensal Green. AUGUSTA INGILBY was born on the 29th of April 1786 at 10 Great Marlborough Street, in the P arish of St. James’s, Westminster & baptized there. She married on the 14th of June at Harrington, Robert Cracroft of Hackthorne in the county of Lincoln. He was born on the 25th of January 1783 was a Justice of the P eace, a Deputy Lieutenant, and a Lieutenant Colonel of the North Lincolnshire M ilitia. He died on the 3rd of September 1862, and was buried at Hackthorne. She died on the 21st of January 1857, and was buried at Hackthorne.

DIANE INGILBY was born on the 16th of September 1790 and baptized at Ripley on the 19th of September 1790. She was married to William Gunning Campbell of Fairfield in the county of Ayr in Scotland on the 18th of April 1811 at Ripley. He was a Justice of the P eace and a Deputy Lieutenant. She died on the 10th of June 1841 at Leamington. He was born on the 18th of January 1784. He married secondly on the 17th of March 1845 M aria-A Anne daughter of John Henry M cN Naughton, 2nd son of John Stewart

Campbell

M enzies of Culdair in the county of P erth, but by her had no issue. He died on the – of --- 1856. ANNE INGILBY was baptized on the 28th of August 1789 at Ripley and was buried there on the 19th of May 1790. Menzies Page | 2

JULIA WHARTON INGILBY was born at Ripley on the 12th of February 1794. She was married to Sir Robert Barrie, K night Commander of the Bath; a Rear Admiral in the Navy; also a K night of the Royal Hanoverian Guelphic Order, on the 26th of October 1816 at Harrington. She died on the 23rd of November 1836 and was buried at Ripley. He was born on the 7th of May 1774 at St. Augustane’s, Florida. He was buried at Ripley on the 15th of June 1841 having had issue one son and four daughters. There is a stained

glass window in Ripley Church to the memory of Sir Robert Barrie and his Lady. They lived at Swarthdale near Bolton-le-S Sands in Lancashire. CONSTANCE INGILBY was born on the 26th of July 1795 at Berne in Switzerland and baptized at the German Church there. She was married to Mark Theodore de Morlat, Doctor of M edicine of Berne on 5th of July 1819. He died at Berne in 1873. She died on the 22nd of October 1877 at Berne in Switzerland, leaving issue one son and a daughter. She was buried at Berne. ANNE MARIA INGILBY was born 1st of August 1788 at 10 Great Marlborough Street, St. James’s, Westminster. She died on the 12th of August 1788 and was buried in a vault in the burying ground of St. George’s, Hanover Square, London.

o IR WILLIAM AMCOTTSAMCOTTS-INGILBY of Ripley Castle and Kettlethorpe Park, 2nd Baronet, was baptized at Ripley on the 20th of June 1783 and died without issue, on the 14th of May 1854 in London and was buried at Ripley. The title of Baronet of the 2nd Creation with him became extinct. He

succeeded his grandfather Sir Wharton Amcotts in the Baronetcy of K ettlethorpe on the 26th of September 1807 by a special clause in the patent of 1795 (the same year that that gentleman had been made a Baronet). He assumed the name of Amcotts before that of Ingilby by Royal P ermission in 1812. He was M ember of Parliament once for Retford and twice for South Lincolnshire. He was married firstly to LOUISA daughter of John Atkinson of Maple Hayes in the county of Stafford on the 18th of April 1822 at Maple Hayes. She died on the 22nd of July 1836 without issue and was buried at Ripley. He was married secondly to Mary Anne daughter of John Clementson of Abingdon Street, Westminster (D Deputy Sergeant-at-A Arms in the House of Commons) on the 27th of July 1843. She was a granddaughter of Sir Thomas Turton Baronet. This marriage took place at St. Margaret’s, Westminster. There is a memorial tablet in Ripley Church erected to the memory of Sir William Amcotts-IIngilby and Louisa his first wife.

Sir William Amcotts-IIngilby left his estates to the Reverend Henry John Ingilby in whom the Baronetcy was again revived. The K ettlethorpe estates descended to Robert Cracroft of Hackthorne. Dame M ary Anne Amcotts-IIngilby died at Broxholme, Ripley on the 22nd of December 1902 and was buried at Ripley.

HE REVEREND HENRY INGILBY (alias Henry Wright see p1) was the second illegitimate son of Sir John Ingilby 4th and last Baronet (see see part I p27). He was born on the 25th of February 1761, was at school at Acton in M iddlesex and afterwards at the Charterhouse; after that he was educated at ---

He lived for sometime at Ripley. On the 14th of September 1786 he was married

to ISABELLA JANE daughter of Ralph Bates of M ilbourne in Northumberland. He was Rector of Alford, Swallow and Rigsby in Lincolnshire. He afterwards lived at Guisborough and K irkleatham in Yorkshire. She died on the 27th of September 1822 and was buried at K irkleatham. He was also buried there having died on the 4th of September 1833. She was baptized on the 25th of May 1760 at St. Andrews, Newcastleupon-T Tyne. (see see part III). III They had issue: 1 THE REVEREND SIR HENRY JOHN INGILBY 1st Baronet (see p6) 2 SIR WILLIAM BATES INGILBY K night Commander of the Bath was born on the 30th of April 1791

at North Deighton. He was educated at the Royal M ilitary Academy, Woolwich and entered the Royal Artillery as 2nd Lieutenant in 1809; he became Lieutenant 1812, Captain 1830, Brevet M ajor 1830, Lieutenant- Colonel 1847, Colonel 1854, a Major-G General in the Army 1860, Colonel-C Commander of the 5th Brigade of the Royal Artillery 1866, a Lieutenant-G General 1867 and General in October 1877. He served at Busaco, Salamanca, Cindad Rodrigo, Buentes d’O Onor, Burgos and Waterloo. He received the silver war medal with four clasps. Created K night Commander of the Bath in 1867. He was wounded at the siege of Salamanca. At the battle of Waterloo he served in the 3rd Troop of Royal Artillery, commanded by Page | 4

Lieutenant-C Colonel Sir Robert Gardiner K.C.B. K.C.B He died on the 6th of August 1879 at No.9 Roland Gardens, South Kensington. Will dated 16th of October 1863. Buried at K ensal Green. 3 RICHARD WHARTON INGILBY was born on the 20th of February 1796 at North Deighton. Died on the 4th of March 1855 unmarried and was buried at Ripley. 4 RALPH MITFORD PRESTON INGILBY (see p8) HARRIET JANE INGILBY born 22nd of October 1787 at Ripley, baptized there on the 26th of February 1788. She died on the 22nd of September 1792 at Carleton, P ontefract; buried at Pontefract. HENRIETTA INGILBY born 6th of October 1788; died the same night. Buried at Ripley on the 7th of October 1788. LUCY MARY INGILBY was born on the 17th of August 1792 at North Deighton. She died on the 2nd of October 1863 at Harrogate. Buried at Ripley. ESTHER INGILBY was born on the 12th of September 1793 at North Deighton. She was married at Hackthorne in Lincolnshire on the 14th of June 1842 to the Reverend William Wright LLB, LLB Rector of Healing, Ormsby and Scarley. He also afterwards lived at Brattleby Hall in that county; was Lord of the Manor of Brattleby and a Justice of the Peace. He died without issue on the 22nd of March 1863 and was buried at Healing, Lincolnshire.

She died on the 10 of March 1870 at 10 Park Place, South Kensington and was buried at Louth. ANNE INGILBY born 10th December 1794 at Newcastle-upon-T Tyne. She died on the 18th of February 1858 and buried at Kensal Green. ISABELLA MARIA INGILBY born 22nd September 1800 at North Deighton. She died on the 23rd of March 1870 at Harrogate and was buried in the Cemetery there. EMILY INGILBY married to George Winter of Kilnwick P ercy. She died on the 21st of July 1832 aged 29, and was buried at Pocklington.

HE REVEREND SIR HENRY JOHN INGILBY 1st Baronet of Ripley Castle and Harrington Hall, Lincolnshire was born on the 28th of January 1790 at North Deighton in the county of York. He was educated at University College, Oxford, where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts, 1812; M aster of Arts, 1816; was Rector of West Keal, Lincolnshire.

He succeeded to the estates on the death of Sir William Amcotts-IIngilby. He was created Baronet on the 26th of July 1866 being the third Creation. He was Lord of the M anors of Ripley, Dacre and North Deighton and Patron of the livings of Ripley and Harrington. He was married to ELIZABETH daughter of Day Hort Macdowall of Walkinshaw in Scotland on the 19th of August 1824 at Glentyan, Renfrewshire. She was born on the 29th of January 1800 at Walkinshaw.

She died on the 7 of March 1869 and was buried at Ripley. He was also buried there having died on the 4th of July 1870. They had issue: 1 SIR HENRY DAY INGILBY 2nd Baronet (see below) 2 WILLIAM INGILBY (see p7) 3 WILHELMINA INGILBY was born on the 15th of May 1825 at Knaresborough. She died on the 15th of December 1902 and was buried at Ripley.

o IR HENRY DAY INGILBY of Ripley Castle and of Harrington Hall, 2nd Baronet was born on the 12th of October 1826 at West K eal, Lincolnshire and baptized there. He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts, 1845; M aster of Arts 1850. Was a deacon in Holy Orders but gave that up on succeeding to the Baronetcy. He is a Justice of the P eace and a Deputy Lieutenant for the West Riding of Yorkshire. He was married on the 26th of June 1862 to ALICIA MARGARET youngest daughter of David Robertson of Ladykirk in

Berwickshire, Esquire M ember of Parliament and Lord Lieutenant of Berwickshire afterwards created Baron Marjoribanks. Married at St. James’s, Piccadilly, London.

He lived at North Deighton until the death of his father. He is Lord of the Manors of Ripley, Dacre and North Deighton and Patron of the livings of Ripley and Harrington. He was High Sheriff of Yorkshire --. He died 5 December 1911 at Ripley and was buried there. She died 15th of December 1916 at Ripley and was buried there. They had issue: HENRY HAGGERSTON INGILBY was born on the 12th of July 1869 at 5 Abyn P lace, Edinburgh and was buried on the 31st of December 1873 at Ripley. MARY ALICIA INGILBY was born on the 26th of June 1863 at St. James’s P lace, London and died on the 14th of October 1872 at Ladykirk.

ILLIAM INGILBY was born on the 13th of December 1829 at West K eal, Lincolnshire. He was a Lieutenant in the Bengal Artillery; was afterwards a Captain in the Yorkshire Yeomanry Hussars. He was married on the 4th of February 1874 to ELEANOR ISABELLA second daughter of Henry Macdowall, Esquire of

Garthland in Scotland.

They had issue (T Twins): 1 WILLIAM HENRY INGILBY was born on the 28th of December 1874 at Farnham near Knaresborough.

2 JOHN UCHTRED MACDOWALL INGILBY was born on the 28th of December 1874 at Farnham. He was married on the 3rd of August 1904 at Montacute, Somerset to MARJORIE CICELY eldest daughter of William Robert Phelips of Montacute House, by his first wife Cecily Grace Augusta Fane. Phelips

K irkleatham in the county of York was born on the 14th of June 1797 at North Deighton. He was Captain in the 84th Regiment of Foot. He married JANE eldest daughter of Charles Knyvett, Esquire of Sonning in the county of Berkshire on the 12th

of October 1826 at St. Margaret’s, Westminster (see see Pedigree of Knyvett part Knyvett

III). III He died on the 29th of August 1831 at Up Park Camp, Jamaica.

She married secondly Charles Dance of Old Brompton in the county of M iddlesex at K irkleatham on the 6th of July 1840. She was born on 20th October 1797 in London and died 2nd November 1854 and was buried in Highgate Cemetery. Charles Dance died 5th January 1863 and was buried at Lowestoft. Ralph Mitford Preston Ingilby and Jane his wife had issue: 1 CHARLESCHARLES-HENRY INGILBY (see below) 2 RALPHRALPH-MITFORD INGILBY was born on the 25th of April 1829 at Longford in Ireland. He was Lieutenant in the 7th Bengal Native Lancers. He was killed at Arrah in the East Indies on the 29th of July 1857 and buried at Dinapoor. 1 HARRIETHARRIET-JANE INGILBY was born at Up Park Camp, Jamaica. She was married to Charles Austin, Esquire of Brandeston Hall in the county of Suffolk on the 10th of June 1856 at St. Pancras’ Church, London. He was born on the 26th of March 1799. He was a very distinguished lawyer; called to the Bar in 1827; became Q ueen’s Counsel in 1841. He was a Justice of the P eace and Chairman of Q uarter Sessions. He purchased Brandeston Hall. He left issue having died on 21st December 1874; he was buried at Brandeston. She died 26th of December 1902 at Tunbridge Wells and was buried – 2 MARYMARY-LIPSCOMB INGILBY was born at Bishop’s P en, Jamaica. She died unmarried.

HARLES HENRY INGILBY was born on the 28th of September at K irkleatham in the county of York. He entered the Royal Artillery as 2nd Lieutenant on the 16th of December 1846, 1st Lieutenant 30th June 1847, Captain 20th June 1854, M ajor 12 December 1854,

Lieutenant Colonel 9th November 1862, Brevet-C Colonel 17th December 1870 and Colonel 17th December 1875. He served in the Eastern Campaign of 1854-55 including the affairs of Bulganac and M cK Kenzie’s Farm, the battles of Alma, Balaklava and Inkerman (severely wounded), the siege of Sebastopol and repulse of the sortie on the 26th October 1854. He has the war medal with four clasps, Sardinian and Turkish M edals and 5th Class of the Medjidie. Created “C Companion of the Order of the Bath” (C.B. C.B.) C.B. 1875. Major General (retired) 1884. He was married at Simonburn, Northumberland on 21st October 1875 to SARA DULCIBELLA daughter of William Bell of Woolsington, Northumberland (formerly Captain 43rd Regiment of Light Infantry). He died without issue on the 13th of December 1893 at Spennithorne Hall, co. York and was buried at Spennithorne. She died at the Castle Hill, M iddleham, co. York on the 29th of November 1911 and
