LINEAGE: The MacDowall/McDouall family name and Clan McDowall are derived from their eponym Deugald/Dowgal 2nd son of Uchtred Lord of Galloway (by Gurnelda, daughter of Waldeve Governor of Cumberland and grand-daughter of Gospatrick Governor of Northumberland) and grandson of Prince Fergus (Governor and First Feudal Lord of Galloway by his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Henry I of England. Their ancient Gaelic descent through the senior Scots Dalriadic House of Lorne, Kings of Scotland may be traced from Prince Fergus’ lineal grandfather Gille native Governor of the Western Isles and his wife, sister of Norse suzerain Siguard II Jarl of Orkney (killed 1014) and daughter of Malcolm II. Registered in 1292 as “Macdowyl” with his brother Fergus in the “Ragman Roll” of general fealty to Edward I; had a Charter in 1295 from his 3rd cousin King John Baliol Lord of Galloway confirming him in the Barony of Garochloyne with Lougan and Elrig on the Rhinns of Galloway. He was Captain (and Edward I’s Sergeant) of the armed forces of Galloway against the invading Bruces and in 1307 he captured Thomas and Alexander Bruce who invaded from Ireland for which he was Knighted by Edward I. He battled Robert I in the names of the Comyn and Baliol Lords of Galloway and Kings in Galloway, Dumfries IOM and Bannockburn; and he fought Edward Bruce at the rivers Cree and Dee. Had 8 sons, the eldest of whom was DOUGAL who married the heiress of Hugh de Champaigne but was killed 1314 at Bannockburn. He died 1328 in England and was succeeded by his 2nd son.
Sir Duncan MacDougall or MacDowall = (1) Matildis = (2) Margaret Fraser Returned from England (1329 and raised the Galwegian forces in support of returning King Edward Baliol in 1332, 1334 and 1339 for whom he fortified Heston Island in Eastern Galloway. He was granted lands there when David II of Scotland returned from exile in France in 1345, and he served with and was captured with David at the Battle of Neville’s Cross (Durham) in 1346 but was soon exchanged (1347) for other hostages to again support the return of King Edward Baliol until he swore allegiance to captive King David II in 1353; died 1388
