Completed in 1399, it’s scars bear testament to over six hundred years of history, yet remarkably about one third of it’s rooms and three quarters of its walls remain completely intact. The castle and it’s inhabitants featured heavily in regional and national politics between the 14th and 17th centuries, notably in the Pilgrimage of Grace. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here for six months and it was held for the King in a six month siege during the Civil War. There is a Tea Room, Gift Shop and restored Medieval Garden, including a Maze, Vineyard, Herb Garden, Bowling Green and Rose Garden. Weddings can be held here, as well as educational activity days, paranormal tours and other private events. Throughout the castle, rooms display fine furniture, impressive artworks and elaborate architecture. Highlights include the vast Baron’s Hall, where it is reputed 700 knights gathered to plot the doomed Rising of the North rebellion against Elizabeth I, and the stunning interior of the Victorian Octagon Drawing Room. Visitors can also enjoy the deer park, walled gardens, woodland play area and carriage collection. Part of the stables have been converted into an atmospheric tearooms with an adjoining gift shop. The Ingilby family have lived at the castle for 700 years – an astonishing achievement. Guided tours are hugely entertaining and informative. Francis was put to death for being a Catholic priest and Sir William was implicated in the Guy Fawkes Gunpowder Plot. ‘Trooper Jane’ held Cromwell at pistol point in the Library. Until the 1980's the house was hidden under the relatively modern façade of a derelict office block. Only when the building was going to be destroyed was the amazing medieval building discovered and its history uncovered. The building has now been lovingly restored to its original splendour with stunning high ceilings, beautiful exposed timber frames, and possibly the only horn window in England. It has been decorated to replicate what it would have looked like as the Snawsell home around 1483 and boasts a magnificent Great Hall. Visitors to Barley Hall can make themselves at home, sit on the chairs and handle the objects, and experience what it would have been like to live in Medieval England. This is no glossily restored showpiece, frozen in a single period of manicured grandeur, the hall was ‘Conserved as found’ and is a mansion which has grown comfortably old over 120 years, and reveals a country house as it really was: still reflecting its original opulence but well-used, patched up in places and full of unexpected family curios. In contrast to the house, the extensive gardens have been wonderfully restored to their original horticultural splendour as ‘a collection of grand gardens in miniature’. Explore the Enchanted Grove with paths, banks and bridges winding over and under each other revealing an array of different views, which reflect the desires and apsirations of Victorian gentry. No matter what time of year visited the gardens at Brodsworth Hall are a delight in any season. The Hall is filled with treasures collected and commissioned by the family over the centuries – original Elizabethan carving and plasterwork and a marvellous collection of impressionist paintings. The Hall is surrounded by lawns and yew topiary bushes while the award winning walled garden has a potager, maze, jungle garden and coloured gardens with giant board games. The fun filled courtyard contains imaginative gifts, plants and dried flowers from the walled garden, and a children’s play area. The Farmers' Food Store is packed with seasonal Yorkshire produce and fruit and vegetables from the garden. The 18th century hall is now a museum containing stunning collections of furniture, old master paintings, glassware and ceramics, displayed in the Hall’s Georgian interiors. The Walled Kitchen Garden and recently restored Cottage Garden are home to over thirty varieties of pears, as well as our famous Muscat Vine. The museum hosts a lively programme of events for all ages throughout the year, as well as having facilities for conferences and civil wedding ceremonies. The principal rooms of the mansion still remain a fine example of the type of grand interior popular at the end of the 19th Century. The house is surrounded by 35 acres of 18th Century landscaped green gardens including vast terraces, temples and woodlands described as the supreme masterpiece of the art of the landscape gardener. In addition to the garden there are 400 acres of parkland including a National Nature Reserve. The parkland offers visitors of all ages the opportunity to admire the veteran trees and various species of wildlife while enjoying the way marked walks and orienteering. The richly decorated interior was designed by York’s most distinguished architect, John Carr. After considerable use this century as a cinema and dancehall, Fairfax House was acquired and fully restored by the York Civic Trust in 1983/84. It is now home to the unique Noel Terry collection of Georgian furniture, clocks, paintings and decorative arts, described by Christie’s as one of the finest private collections formed in the 20th century. The collection perfectly complements the house, bringing it to life in a very tangible way and creating a special lived-in feeling. The result is a triumphant blend of connoisseurship and conservation. Opening times: 13 February to 31 December 2010: Monday - Thursday & Saturday 11am – 4.30pm. The bird garden has over 200 species and one of Europe’s largest walk-through free flight aviaries. There are formal gardens, William and Mary garden, deer park, woodland walks and an adventure playground. In the stable courtyard the cafe provides delicious cakes and other tasty homemade goodies and there are two gift shops. The main event for the year is "Ruffled Feathers" which is a celebration of the influence of birds in fashion and the decorative arts. The superb contents of the house, collected on the Grand Tour, include a set of French Gobelins tapestries, a gallery of classical statuary and some of Chippendale’s finest furniture. Visitors can enjoy the 25 acres of award winning gardens full of rare and beautiful plants. Step back in time in the magnificent Victorian walled garden with its traditionally grown heritage varieties of vegetables and wall-trained fruit. Charlotte Brontë visited the Hall on many occasions and was so inspired by the house that it featured as Fieldhead in her novel Shirley. The Hall was built in 1583 by John Batt and is displayed as a late 17th Century family home, with a fine collection of mainly authentic furnishings, creating a real impression of a post English Civil War gentry household. The 17th Century formal gardens are well worth a visit and were recently awarded a second Yorkshire In Bloom Silver Gilt Rose Award. Beyond the gardens are 110 acres of Green Flag Award winning country park with a visitor centre, countryside centre, café, play area, walks and nature trail. The ground floor of the Hall is now wheelchair accessible as are many of the paths around the park and gardens. There are access toilets in the visitor centre.
