Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë were the authors of some of the best loved books in the English language. The beautifully preserved museum has been opening its doors to visitors for over 75 years. Set between the unique village of Haworth, and the wild moorland beyond, this homely Georgian house still retains the atmosphere of the Brontës' time. The rooms they once used are filled with their furniture, clothes and personal possessions and displays are changed annually, so you can always be sure of seeing something new. There is also an exhibition gallery with changing displays from the Brontë Society collections, and a newly refurbished gift shop. Charlotte Brontë often visited her close friend Mary Taylor here and featured Red House in her novel Shirley. See 1830s middle-class home life vividly portrayed, from the elegant parlour to the stone flagged kitchens. A rare example of beautiful recreated 1830s gardens provide an enchanting setting for the house - take a stroll amongst the scented old roses, ornamental 'flower basket' beds and unusual varieties of period plants and shrubs. Charlotte Brontë visited on many occasions in the 19th Century and was so inspired by the house that it featured as Fieldhead, the home of the Heroine in Shirley. The Hall was built in 1583 by John Batt and is set as it would have looked in the late 17th Century, with a mixture of authentic and reproduction furnishings creating a real impression of a post Civil War gentry household. The formal 17th Century garden has recently been restored, with box hedges planted in geometric patterns, inspired by the wood and plaster designs inside the Hall.

The lakes are also home to a vast collection of ornamental fish, which can be hand fed. Burnby Hall Gardens provide 9 acres of changing vistas, which include a woodland walk, Victorian garden, a Secret garden, extensive rockeries, shrubberies and a fine collection of ornamental and indigenous trees. The brainchild of Mr C.R.Armstrong O.B.E was originally built as a private folly but due to public demand was subsequently opened. The garden produced fruit and vegetables for Duncombe Park but fell into ruin after its Victorian hey-day. In 1994 the charity was established to restore the garden and provide horticultural therapy and a tranquil healing environment for those in need. A plantsman’s garden including 350 varieties of Clematis, 52 Yorkshire apples, outdoor vineyard and 34 indoor Victorian vines. After capturing the nation’s imagination on the BBC TV series ‘Restoration’, the secret gardens of the Earls of Strafford are being carefully restored in a major project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Rare formal gardens have been rediscovered, National Collections of Rhododendrons, Camellias and Magnolias enhanced, and over 100,000 bulbs planted throughout the 50 acre garden to create a carpet of colour. Many of the 26 listed buildings and monuments across the only Grade 1 listed parkland and garden are being repaired and opened for visitors. With its atmospheric views, woodland walks and majestic follies - including a dramatic viewing platform at the top of a castle folly 600 feet above sea level - there is something for everyone to enjoy in the gardens all year round. Beyond the gardens over 500 acres of historic parkland can be explored via the Monument Trail, a new 2 mile path taking you through the beautiful countryside of Stainborough and linking several restored follies and native woods.

Completed in 1399 its scars bear testament to over six hundred years of history including being besieged during the Civil War and Mary, Queen of Scots imprisonment. There is a mediaeval garden, including herbs, roses, a vineyard and maze. The tea room provides tea and cakes, as well as sandwiches and light lunches. Wedding ceremonies and receptions can be held here, as well as parties, corporate events and themed activity days for children.

Highlights include an impressive gateway, a vast hall, a mediaeval kitchen, used until 1954 and a splendid Victorian octagonal drawing room that has re-emerged as one of the most striking interiors from the 19th century. Throughout the castle the rooms display fine furniture, impressive artworks and elaborate architecture. Visitors can also enjoy the deer park, walled gardens and carriage collection. Part of the stables have been converted to a tearoom, where former stalls have been incorporated to create an atmospheric setting. Events take place throughout the summer. The Ingilbys were prominent Catholics: Francis was martyred in York in 1586 and several others were implicated in the Gunpowder Plot. ‘Trooper Jane’, a redoubtable royalist, held Oliver Cromwell at pistol point in the Castle Library. The guided tours are hugely entertaining, incorporating the Georgian and Tudor wings. You get to see some 16th century books, Royal Greenwich civil war armour and the secret priest’s hiding hole, only discovered by accident in 1964. The special children’s tours are hugely popular. Delightful walled gardens: impressive hot houses, herbaceous borders and kitchen gardens with herbs, and rare vegetables and fruit trees. 150,000 spring bulbs create a riot of colour and the National Hyacinth Collection blooms in April / May. A play trail has been created for the children and there is a lovely walk around the lake in the deer park. The cobbled market village has several shops, a tearoom, an art gallery, a farmyard museum, an ancient church and a charming Inn (The Boar’s Head) with bar and beer garden.

Barley Hall 2 Coffee Yard, Off Stonegate, York YO1 8AR Tel: 01904 610275 Email: barleyhall@yorkat.co.uk www.barleyhall.org.uk Map Ref 8 Barley Hall is a stunning medieval townhouse, once home to the Priors of Nostell and the Mayor of York. Until the 1980's the house was hidden under the relatively modern façade of a derelict office block. Only when the building was going to be destroyed was the amazing medieval building discovered and its history uncovered. The building has now been lovingly restored to its original splendour with stunning high ceilings, beautiful exposed timber frames, and possibly the only horn window in England. It has been decorated to replicate what it would have looked like as the Snawsell home around 1483 and boasts a magnificent Great Hall. Visitors to Barley Hall can make themselves at home and sit on the chairs and handle the objects and experience what it would have been like to live in Medieval England. Opening times: Winter 2007/8: Closed Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. Summer 2008: Closed Mondays (17 March- 2 November). Winter 2008/9: Closed Sunday, Monday Tuesday (2 November – 18 April 2009). From the crimson silk, chandeliers and the “grand gardens in miniature” to the humble lives of servants in kitchens and attic rooms there is much to discover.
