ins&outs, Fall 2018 The following project is an exploration playing with the orientation and sequences of space to create a tumbling effect while entering or viewing into rooms. The typical grounding elements that denotes what is up or down has been reconfigured. The material of the space is askewed by 45 degrees, creating confusion where surfaces meet. Thresholds and railings which are associated with walls or floors are misplaced to make the occupant feel as if their feet should be on the walls and their backs on the floors. When the horizon is hard to distinguish, what is the affect on the viewer? The rooms are arranged in a sequence aware of how an user would walk through the space. Careful attention was made for intentional casualness of the arrangement. Some forms were canted, while others kept their orientation almost orthogonal. The rotated 45 degree box distinguishes what is in or out. The results are spaces and views to confuse ones’ perception while navigating the five rooms.

Chigreens School, Spring 2019 ChiGreen’s School is a indoor agriculture facility with a school/ commune to support the production composed of students and workers. Produce grown in the facility is harvested by robots which are delivered to patrons via a building scale vending machine. The school and its circulation snake through the bio-artificial landscape and is surrounded by pink/red light. As the school traverses through the plethora of racks filled with produce, it culminates in a cooperative dining hall. The entrance of the residences are located on the top level but their other levels submerges back into the building. For the building, there are 3 entrances: one for the patrons who buy produce from the facility, second for the school as a grand entrance (which spills out into a hallway meandering up and through the entirety of the building), and the third entrance is for the workers located off-centered from the grand entrance. It is discrete and is located towards the perimeter.

cabinet&aroom, Fall 2019 The traditional home is a series of rooms with furniture scattered for our needs. It results in duplicates and can clutter living spaces to prevent the peace of mind that minimal living can allow. Cabinet and a Room imagines minimal living as inhabiting a super-sized piece of furniture in a room (see diagram on page 8) The cabinet offers highly compact space to live which is offset by uninterrupted views and a generous sized room where one can spread out. The room associated with the cabinet changes form depending on the intersection of the ground plane and the functional aspect of the cabinet. The cabinet contains all functional needs of the houses including vertical circulation. Doors and drawers can be opened to reveal the modes of living behind the minimal wooden finish of the cabinet. Cabinet and a Room is located in the neighborhood of North Lawndale, along the CTA pinkline. The site is a traditional Chicago lot (25’ x 125’) and has three houses approximately 1000 sf arranged in a line.

market, Spring 2020 In 1531, the Bourse of Antwerp was the first public building used exclusively for financial and commodity trading. The focus of this studio with a focus on the origin and organization of the market, but really it was an investigation of two genealogies: Abstraction and Thingness. Abstraction refers to all aspects of the project which exist within opinion, while Thingness is the reality which enables meaning. The following project explores the use of material tectonics (bare structures) as a way to abstract the thing (the market). The project is a mix-used program: retail on the bottom floor, restaurant/cafe on the second floor, and four apartments on top. The material selection is specific. The market uses bundled grass to hold the floors above as well as subdivides space. The second floor is composed of concrete and explores different methods of fabrication: cast-in-place and prefab. The third/fourth floors are residential, composed of four circular brick enclosures. Discrepancies in how these structures stack on each other exhibit the strength and differences of each.
