Studio One World Premiere by Melissa Barak The Moor’s Pavane Limón / Purcell September 20 – 25, 2016 Richmond Ballet Studio Theatre
Known to audiences through Eos Chasma, the brooding ballet she created for the 2014 New Works Festival, Melissa Barak will begin work on a new, neo-classical ballet exploring dynamic partnering and choreographic patterns. Next, José Limón’s masterpiece, The Moor’s Pavane, is a deep and passionate work that draws its inspiration from William Shakespeare’s, Othello. This piece conveys a sense of grandeur and reverence, heightened by Henry Purcell’s Baroque-era composition that threads the storyline together, and places it in time.

Trio Three Strikingly Different Ballets: With Richmond Symphony ‘The Kingdom of Shades’ from La Bayadère Petipa / Minkus Lift The Fallen Cong / Richter Slaughter On Tenth Avenue Balanchine/Rodgers & Kay November 4 – 6, 2016 Carpenter Theatre at Dominion Arts Center
‘The Kingdom of the Shades,’ from the lavish, full-length ballet La Bayadère, is one of the most iconic scenes in the classical ballet world. Set within an exotic and spiritual realm, it features 24 dancers who step and breathe as one, as if in a ghostly procession. Then, Ma Cong’s stunning tribute to his mother, Lift The Fallen, which sings of souls that are broken, mended and ultimately, uplifted, will be presented with live orchestration for the first time after thrilling audiences across China. George Balanchine’s Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, a sultry, boozy tale of jealousy, mobsters and the seamy underbelly of New York City, comes to Richmond for the first time to close the show.

The Nutcracker Winslett / Tchaikovsky With Richmond Symphony December 10 – 23, 2016 Carpenter Theatre at Dominion Arts Center
The Nutcracker shines brighter than ever with redesigned costumes, heavenly new scenery, and brand new characters that include an elegant Swan Sleigh, all added during the 2015 production of the Richmond Ballet holiday classic. The wonder and magic of the season are set to come alive once again with sugar plums, sparkling flowers, a much-loved dancing bear, and more! The Nutcracker is a favorite holiday tradition for Richmond audiences, and with Tchaikovsky’s beloved score, this dazzling production is sure to complete every December.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Soleau / Mendelssohn With Richmond Symphony February 10 – 12, 2017 Carpenter Theatre at Dominion Arts Center
William Soleau’s delightful telling of Shakespeare’s popular tale of love, both lost and found, sprinkled with a clever brand of mischief, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, is a unique collaboration between the Ballet, the Symphony, singers, and narrators. Audiences embark on a journey through the mystical, woodland court of Tatiana and Oberon and the sumptuous and regal palaces of ancient Greece as four sets of lovers become intertwined through a series of comical events and tricks set about by the infamous sprite, Puck.

Studio Two World Premiere by Katarzyna Skarpetowska A Tribute (To Marcel Marceau And Bip) Burn / Drigo March 14 – 19, 2017 Richmond Ballet Studio Theatre
Katarzyna Skarpetowska’s contemporary style combines ballet and modern dance to create movements that are wonderfully original and organic in nature, making her one of the world’s most highly sought-after artists. In returning to Richmond Ballet, Skarpetowska’s attention to the craft of choreography combined with her seamless movement style are certain to create another work that will leave our audiences amazed. Also returning to Richmond, is Malcolm Burn’s delightful tribute to legendary mime Marcel Marceau which began as a short piece for the 2008 New Works Festival. Set to the music of Ricardo Drigo, Burn’s studied and layered classical choreography takes on a comedic tone in A Tribute, a light-hearted work for five dancers.

Studio Three World Premiere by Matthew Frain Tarantella Balanchine / Gottschalk Notturno Aiello / Schubert April 4 – 9, 2017 Richmond Ballet Studio Theatre
Company dancer Matthew Frain shows off his choreographic talents with a fully-produced new ballet, that will be paired with a dazzling display of technical skill, explosive jumps and furious footwork in George Balanchine’s short, but wonderfully virtuosic Tarantella presented for the first time ever on the Richmond Ballet stage. Also taking the stage, Salvatore Aiello’s 1988 sensuous quartet for two couples, Notturno, which features live music and languid movements that create daring shapes with the human form.

Richmond Ballet looks to the community to sustain and grow our programming comprised of a talented company of professional dancers, transformative outreach initiatives, and an engaging and rigorous school. Quite simply, none of our programs are possible without friends who give each year to keep us dancing. Ticket purchases cover approximately 30% of our annual costs, so we depend on charitable contributions to help close the gap. Your support as a patron and a donor is vital to our continued success.
