GOALS
CONSTRAINTS
To design a practical solution for art student to carry food across a busy campus
Must be made of biodegradable products
Aim to join multiple food options together in one carrier Must be lightweight/easy to handle
Packaging should allow for multiple products to be held securely
Packaging needs to be lightweight
Packaging must allow for students to easily navigate through campus
BRIEF
5 WEEKS
Since Brickman CafĂŠ has opened there has been an absence of practical food carriers. The only options that exist for transporting food lack in both form and function (a generic plate). All carriers are based on the idea that the consumer will be carrying that single product, but in reality most consumers purchase multiple items with each visit. The new packaging should allow for and encourage consumers to purchase more products with each visit by allowing for consumers to easily transport food with practical packaging.

INDICATORS OF SUCCESS To create a product that could be practically used at Brickman CafĂŠ to make transporting food more efficient and practical for an everyday consumer
BRAIN STEW
// SKETCHES & MODELS At this early phase in the project I had many ideas that I wanted to explore. I thought about my target audience being art school students, using biodegradable materials, and how to get the most function out of my carrier while still keeping it compact

REFINED PROTOTYPES The goal is to create a product that could be practically used at Brickman CafĂŠ to make transporting food more efficient and practical for an everyday consumer. Through the prototyping stage, many of the models failed to carry the products, were inefficient, or were too complicated to function effectively. The idea centered around carrying the cup in the middle as the center of gravity and the food located some place around, next to, or on top of it. Much of this stage was spent figuring out how to balance the carrier.

4 FURTHER REFINED PROTOTYPES In this stage of the project, I focused on making a product that could work as efficiently as possible. Fortunately, when tested in the Brickman Cafe with food and a filled cup, the carrier held up. The user could easily transport food and a drink without a problem. The user could even go as far as spinning the filled carrier without anything falling out or the drink spilling at all. The test was very successful overall, the only issue was the size was slightly too small. With this revision, the carrier was fully functional.

5 FINISH AND DOCUMENTATION After solving the issue of creating a fully functional food and drink carrier, the next step was finishing it off with extra details of design. I chose to use a pattern with line drawings of the objects that could be carried, showing the multiple functions of the carrier (drink, chips, muffin, sandwich, cookie). This product was designed for Brickman Cafe, when the results were shown to some of the employees they were amazed with the carrier and wanted to use it at the Cafe. Above is a photo of the of the Brickman Employee testing out the carrier.
