SPRING 2015
Hi there and welcome to your Spring Newsletter. Where does time go? It only seems just last week that we were welcoming in the New Year and bracing ourselves for the winter weather to come. Now Spring is here (hopefully) and our thoughts turn to sunny days, longer evenings and all those lovely Spice events we can join in with! Have you made your plans for weekends away or a holiday with Spice friends?
500 members travelled with us this Ski season and the coming pages have you’ll find interesting articles including a look back at the ski season which after a pretty difficult start due to an absence of snow has turned into another great season. And as always you will find a selection of next year’s trips available to book both from Spice UK and your local group trips! This edition should be with you by 1st April so did anyone fall for our April Fools events and actually book? Over the years the Spice groups have invented some wonderful events to entice members to book and this year’s no
featured but there a sample of some of the other national weekends too – Dragon Boating, Edinburgh Festival, Murder Mystery, Sailing, etc. There are also many, many more weekends available around to country (to many to list here) so never be without something to look forwards to! Whatever your interests the Spice programme keeps delivering and I hope to see as many of you are possible in June at Center Parcs. So get booking and give yourself something’s to look forward to over the next few months.
different…so, did you fall for it?

Name: Tanya Froggatt Group: Manchester How long have you been a Spice member? 9 years Why did you join Spice? Needed to find myself again – I was lost. What has been your favourite event? Center Parcs Sherwood Forest – think it’s my favourite event what I can remember much about it but hey ho I keep returning every year so that’s positive. What has been your most challenging event? Not one specific event but the fact that I can do events by myself – even now after 9 years I still get butterflies in the pit of my stomach when going somewhere I haven’t been before.
Name: Jennifer Thomson Group: Scotland How long have you been a Spice member? 1 year. Why did you join Spice? I wanted to see more of Scotland and meet new people in the process. I have achieved my goals with weekend breaks, walks and visits to many places of interest. Most importantly, I have had many laughs and enjoyed myself at every event.
What is your funniest memory in Spice? After a difficult period in my life I went on a ghost walk round Manchester with Spice – my sides ached with laughing – yes it was a ghost walk honest. Don’t need a tonic when Spice offer these kind of events!
What has been your favourite event? It’s hard to pick one so my favourite is a canal boat trip in Linlithgow.
What would be your advice for a new member? Life is for living, live it.
I loved driving the boat and being captain of the ship.
Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? Not telling – it’s too embarrassing!
What has been your most challenging event? The Ukulele Workshop was fun but my playing will test the patience of a saint!
What is your life philosophy in one sentence? Don’t put off what you can do today until tomorrow. I know it’s a cliché but I have never looked backed over my 9 years with Spice and regretted anything that I have done. Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Sean Connery cos he’s got the sexiest voice alive; Roger Moore because Bond, James Bond, 007 licence to kill – gets me every time; Johnny Depp but would have to be in his Jack Sparrow costume – fantasy of mine and finally Elvis Presley – could never understand why women could swoon over a man until I saw him. Your favourite movie? Jason and the Argonauts – even name my son after it (and it wasn’t Argonaut haha). Most treasured belonging? Health!
I went on the event twice.
What is your life philosophy in one sentence? Fortune favours the bold. Your favourite movie? The Quiet Man Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Tom Weir (from Weirs Way) and Adam Smith (Scottish Economist) Most treasured belonging? A photograph of my Gran at a wedding. She looked beautiful.
Name: Abigail Newit Group: West Midlands How long have you been on the Spice staff? Just over a year Why did you join Spice? I joined because after university all my friends disappeared all over the country and I found it difficult having a social life while working shifts. What has been your favourite event? By far the shootout in a soft play area, fantastic event and always brilliant atmosphere. What has been your most challenging event? My first event! Walking through that door and saying hello to people for the first time. What is your funniest memory in Spice? Every Spice party! What would be your advice for a new member? If your nervous speak to the office. The staff can help you pick a good first event and introduce you to some other members. Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Oscar Wilde, Heath Ledger, Walt Disney and Marilyn Monroe
Summer Center Parcs Racing the Dragon! One of the highlights of the Spice programme of National Events is our annual Dragon Boat Weekend hosted by Spice West Midlands in the market town of Pershore in Worcestershire. Perhaps this is always so popular because it contains all the necessary Spice ingredients of fun, friendship and friendly competition.

Our unmissable summer Center Parcs Weekend is now a Spice institution - a brilliant weekend break with TWO great exclusive parties and as much sport or relaxation as you can cope with! Special this year is a Sunday Spice Triple Challenge event, adding a brilliant fun event into the weekend which will be another highlight....The Saturday has free Dance Classes– great for mixing and meeting people –this year we are running with 2 sessions each learning the dance steps of a different dance ready for your group ‘performance’ at the Disco in the evening. On Sunday we have a very special optional event with our own Spice Triple Challenge – starting at 12.00am at The Venue. This is a fun mix from Treasure Hunt, Photo Challenge and Scavenger Hunt with a couple of twists. Teams of five. We will put teams together if you don’t have 5.
All the events mentioned on in these pages are available to book on your local sites
Sailing Weekends
National Murder Mystery Weekend
Masham Beer & BBQ Weekend A strong favourite with the Northern Groups (and a few hardened Southern travellers) with around 60 members camping just outside the lovely village of Masham. Again cooked breakfasts on both days, a fabulous BBQ cooked by the hardworking Spice Yorkshire team and a Spice exclusive tour of the wonderful Theakston Brewery with a free beer bar where you can pull your own pints and the favourite beer is usually ‘Old Peculiar’
Walking Weekends Our walking weekends are a big feature of the Spice offerings and many of these are run for us by the boys at Walkwise who have been working alongside Spice for almost 20 years. These fabulously sociable weekends are a mainstay of our calendar and take place all over the UK. Dependent on numbers there can be up to a choice of 3 different walks per day to choose from suiting the more sedate walkers through to those looking for a real challenge.
Our murder mystery weekends are a Spice classic. It’s your chance to become Hercule Poirot or Agatha Christie, can you solve the clues with your team and find out who dunnit! Everyone has a role to play and you may dress up to get into character. Our theme this year is “A Spa Day… To Die For”. A grizzly murder has been committed at a new spa hotel, one of you is the murderer and with your team you need to follow the clues and name the culprit, in true Poirot fashion.
Bunkbarn Weekends Our Bunkbarn weekends are renowned for their value for money and of course the sociable aspect. The general format is 2 nights in hostel type accommodation with cooked breakfasts and sometimes an evening meal and often come with a guided walk/ ramble each day. They are great fun with everyone mucking in to help clean up after breakfasts or even cooking sausages or bacon for 30 to 50 people! Traditionally these weekends have taken place in and around the Yorkshire Dales & the Lakes but look out in 2015 for more further South including Bury, Littlehampton, Milton Keynes and South Wales.
EnCompass Sailing have been providing sailing events for Spice members for the past 12 years. We have introduced over 1200 Spice members to sailing many of whom return year after year. Some have also caught the bug sufficiently to become boat owners, or to sail the oceans in some of the more challenging races such as the Clipper. Our aim on every weekend is for our crew to have amazing weekends whatever their level of experience. Details are available on website and you can also sail the Inner Hebrides out of Oban - there’s nothing like a night moored at Tobermory.
Edinburgh Festival For one month each year the city of Edinburgh plays host to one of the biggest arts events in the world - The Edinburgh Festivals. When seeking the best experience there’s nothing like local knowledge to guide you through the tricky process of selecting the best things to do. Spice Scotland organise an August Bank Holiday break like no other - over the weekend you have the opportunity to attend many shows and extras including the Military Tattoo, Walk Arthurs Seat, Picnic in Princes St. Gardens, Dance at a real Scottish Ceilidh, enjoy fine dining and see some of the best shows the Fringe Festival has to offer. Over the 12 years Spice Scotland have been running these trips over 1300 members have come along - many come back too, time and time again - it’s an experience like no other.

The Spice winter holidays always kick off with our Arctic Adventure trip in early December, and last year once again we took over a lovely Chalet in Levi, Arctic Finland and arrived to a stunning landscape of winter wonderland, with plenty of snow to play in. Although there is a hill with easy skiing, it is the array of other winter activities that make this trip different, including an optional night in a luxury igloo with a glass roof. The group were fortunate enough to have a glorious showing of the Northern Lights that night, and in fact they made three appearances this trip so we were really lucky. Add this to the other fun activities – snow shoeing, husky mushing, reindeer farm, snow tubing, gentle walks through the forest, the ice hotel and log fires (not log fires in the ice Hotel – nooooo that wouldn’t work…) - all this nicely lubed with plenty of ‘glogi’, and no wonder its already almost sold out for this year. Check current availability online.
So there it went – 504 skiers been and gone, and as another Ski season melts away (groan) and we have just our memories and pictures to look back on, and our thoughts will inevitably turn to next years offerings...
but when it did The snow for European ski resorts was late arriving, come – unfortunately it delivered a massive dump in 24 hours on the seasons busiest transfer day – the Christmas/New Year change over weekend, causing complete chaos on the roads and airports. With the French authorities declaring it a National Emergency, we had groups coming from and going out to the resorts, all delayed or stranded, put up in Church Halls and airport floors, while the chaos was sorted out over the following 24 hours. It was a once in a lifetime event, so my money is on it not happening next year – touch wood ice! So our Christmas and New Year skiers enjoyed and endured an unusual ski trip with a few challenges along the way – the main thing is that everyone was safe and we all lived to tell the tale for another season! Our Ski Solo Week (all single rooms) was next to go in early January, ) where this was our fastest selling week last year (be warned we took over the whole Chalet in Courmayur, and with great feedback again, we have rebooked for March 2016. We have tried to book more single rooms on all our trips for next season as the demand for singles is increasing, despite the hefty ‘single supplements’. The ever popular Ski Andorra in late January also had 42 Spicers on, and the easy skiing, great English speaking ski school and fun (tax free) nightlife always delivers – so we liked it that much this year, we are going twice next season – we have just confirmed Pas de la Casa in January, Soldeu in March. At the time of writing (end of Feb) we still have our March trips to go, so looking forward to hearing all your feedback and seeing all the photos. We have a very active Spice Facebook group for Skiers (Search on “Spice Ski UK Group”) which is a fun way to break the ice and keep in touch with your ski pals. And if you are thinking of joining us next year – watch out for those early booking discounts, and to secure the trip you want – most of the trips fill up and we end up with wait lists, so the early bird catches the chairlift, if you get my snow drift!
April is been a time when Spice groups take the opportunity to play up their members! The Spice “April Fool Event” has become a popular Spice tradition. So beware before booking a Spice event that looks at all suspicious if the date is April 1st! And it’s not only the members who get caught out by spoof events (and yes, the bookings do come in, however obvious the joke!). One of my favourites was a “Sewer Treasure Hunt” which promised “clues daubed on the walls”, “a finger buffet underground for which rubber gloves would be provided” and the necessity for “all your clothing to be incinerated on your return through the manhole”. Pretty obvious clues to a hoax you may think, yet they didn’t deter an irate manager from The Severn Trent Water Company calling Spice to threaten legal action if we insisted upon entering their sewage pipes!
Playing the Fool
Another year, the local paper called to ask if they could send a reporter and photographer to cover our “Siege Catapult” event where we were promising to fire Spice Members to a great height over Edgbaston Reservoir to almost certain death! Hilarious! A more recent caller was the General Secretary of British Naturism. They had picked up on our announcement that a Nudist Beach was being established on Birmingham’s newly renovated canal-side area. As you might expect from hardy British naturists, they didn’t see it as at all unusual that we were planning to swim naked through the locks and basins of Birmingham’s waterways, and parade in the buff amongst the commuters in the April sunshine! Other notable spoof events from the Spice archives include: Ejector Seat Testing; Thai Activities for Women; Human Crash Test Dummies; Rambling with Elephants; Image and Style Workshop for Pets; Roadkill Restaurant Experience; Surgery for Beginners and many more besides. Spice is all about fun. And we have no problem laughing at ourselves – particularly on that one day of the year!

Nudist Beach
It is 30 years since Brighton opened its nudist beach and it has been a great success for locals and tourists alike, so it is surprising that Edinburgh has taken quite so long to catch up! Granted, Portobello does not want the venture, so the Union Canal Society has gifted us with fabulous waterways that are ideal for swimming.

Spice Office Garden Party Clearance - who knows what we will uncover Extras: please bring boiler suits, heavy duty gloves and a face mask . Those that have been to our garden parties at Spice Towers know that there is a huge expanse of unused ground behind the property. What you may not know is why it is unused? For the last 40 years the land has been a local dumping ground for old tyres, empt y oil and chemical drums, in fact you name it and you will probably spot it down there. That coupled with the crum bling asbestos garages has made it a no go area – that is until now! Please Note: this event is not covered under our standard insurance policy.

Highlighted Holidays
GRANADA & THE FESTIVAL OF CROSSES 4 days, Friday 1 May 15 from £495 Departs London Gatwick & Manchester We ran this weekend for the first time this year and the feedback was so good we had to repeat it! Contrary to its title this is not a deeply religious based holiday; this weekeBnd takes place during “Las Cruces de Mayo”, Granada’s biggest street festival. During “Cruces” the streets of Granada are awash with elaborate flower-adorned crosses, celebrated with dancing, street food and Sangria into the early hours. Las Cruces de Mayo celebrates the triumph of life over death. Each square has amplified music for dancing and every corner of the town is filled with ‘alegría’ well into the small hours in true inimitable Andalucian style. Las Cruces de Mayo finale takes place every year on the 3rd May!
MARK WARNER 5* WATERSPORTS 8 days, Wed 10/Sat 13 June 2015 from £789 8 days, Wed 17/Sat 20 June 2014 from £789 15 days, Wed 10/Sat 13 June 2014 from £1195 Flights from London Heathrow & Manchester After superb feedback for the last 2 years we are delighted to revisit Mark Warners’ new Levante Beach Resort as our watersports destination for 2015. This 5* resort is located on one of the longest sandy beaches on the eastern coast of Rhodes, in the resort of Afandou, 20kms from Rhodes Town. Rhodes is an island steeped in history, dotted with picturesque little villages, heavenly scented pine and cypress forests and miles upon miles of golden sandy beaches.
TURKEY COAST CRUISE 8 days, Mon 15 June 2015 from £775 8 days, Mon 14 September 2015 from £775 Flights from London Gatwick & Manchester Sailing from Marmaris in the clear turquoise waters of the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas you will discover the delights of the Turkish Coast. The Captain and crew expertly handle the traditional sailing gulet, East Meets West leaving you free to explore the secluded coves and bays. You’ll have no worries about cooking meals, sailing or dropping anchor.
Our host for the weekend is Gayle, a who lives in Granada so can give us the benefit of her local knowledge to help get the most from this great weekend.
VALENCIA & LA TOMATINA FESTIVAL 5 days, Mon 24 Aug 15 from £649 Departs London Gatwick, Liverpool & Edinburgh La Tomatina also known as The Tomato Festival! Most of us have of it but how about being part of it… Every year in the small Spanish town of Buñol the streets are taken over with this amazing spectacle and run red (literally) with rivers of tomato juice! But what’s it all about - La Tomatina is basically a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol near to Valencia in Spain. Thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this ‘World’s Biggest Food Fight’ where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. Prior to 2013 anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000 (reported to be 50,000 in 2012) people crammed into this huge tomato fight, greatly expanding Bunol’s normal 9,000 person population. However, since the 2013 event official ticketing was put into place limiting the number of participants to just 20,000 lucky people and you could be one! Our trip to the festival is a little more civilised however and we have included 4 nights’ accommodation in the historic city of Valencia to make this a truly wonderful breakaway with a difference.
COSTA BLANCA CHILLOUT 8 days, Sun 20 September 2015 from £599 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol & Glasgow Repeated after great feedback last year! Spain’s Costa Blanca, located on the central Eastern coastline, is a popular destination for tourists who arrive every summer to take advantage of the warm climate, sun-drenched beaches, laid-back lifestyle and lively evening culture. Calpe’s two main beaches, the Cantal Roig and the Playa Arenal, are renowned for their long stretches of fine sand and clear waters, perfect for swimming and also popular with surfers. The port comes alive in the afternoon as the daily catch makes
its way inland and diners are invited to sample the fresh local seafood for dinner in one of the many restaurants surrounding the harbour.
CUBA – SUN & FUN 12 days, Thu 22 October 2015 from £1699 Departs London Gatwick direct Join us on a wonderful Caribbean break to the historic island of Cuba! Get away from it all this autumn and enjoy some fun in the Caribbean sun with Spice! This 11-night break to the Caribbean’s largest island, famed for its rum, salsa, vibrant culture and stunning beaches will be amazing. Spend a few days in the happening capital Havana and immerse yourself in decades of history intertwined with a hot salsa beat and plenty of rum cocktails before transferring to quieter Varadero for 7 nights’ All Inclusive relaxation on the beach.
LAKE GARDA AUTUMN SPEICAL 6 days, Sun 11 Oct 2015 from £499 Departs London Stansted & Manchester
INDIA: BOLLYWOOD, PALACES AND BEACHES 15 days, Tue 10 November 15 from £1999 Departs London Heathrow only This is a trip with a real difference and something we have never come across before! Taking in India’s must see Golden Triangle – Dehli, Agra and Jaipur – to see the Taj Mahal, Amber City Fort and Agra Fort amongst other things we then head down to Mumbai for our insight into the world famous Bollywood phenomenon! And finally it’s down the coast to Goa for a well-deserved chillout! This is a trip we are sure won’t be available for long so don’t hang around.
Repeated after huge success over the last few years! The sheer splendour of Italy’s largest lake is legendary. Charming waterside resorts and villages lie sheltered by a stunning backdrop of mountain scenery. Enjoying a mild climate, Lake Garda has a unique charm that has captivated visitors for centuries, offering something for everyone.
CAIRO & NILE CRUISE AT CHRISTMAS 9 days, Sat 19 December 15 from £1079 Departs London Heathrow only
ICELAND DISCOVERY 5 days, Sun 02 November 15 from £699 Departs Luton & Manchester RIceland truly is an amazing and unique destination and we would say it should be on everyone’s to do list at least once in their life! This 4 night break is designed to give a wonderful introduction to this stunning island and includes 2 excursions, a visit to the excellent Blue Lagoon plus enough free time for you to explore on your own. This amazing island near the Arctic Circle is still being dramatically crafted by nature – it’s a world of fire and ice that will enchant you like no other.
Egypt has an enthralling history and a wealth of well-preserved monuments and treasures. Cruising the Nile allows you to visit all the sites and attractions in a comfortable fashion: from the last remaining wonder of the ancient world, the Great Pyramids at Giza, to the vibrant Nubian culture at Aswan, we incorporate all the significant places of interest and what could be better than doing all this at Christmas!

Coordinator’s Corner Welcome to your spring 2015 Live It.
Welcome to new members You’ve taken the first steps and joined Spice; the next step is to come along to your first event. I know this can be a daunting prospect when you don’t know anyone else in the group but there’s no need to be apprehensive, Spice are a friendly bunch. Most of us come along on our own to events so we’re all well used to meeting and welcoming new people. A great way of getting into Spice is by booking your first events right away and getting your first event “under your belt”. Even better is to try a weekend away and get to know a smaller group of people really well. If you’ve not been to a Spice Preview Night we hold them most months, so do make an effort to come to one of these, and please next time I am on an event, come up and say hello so I can put a face to the name! After preview evenings we sometimes follow with new members dinners. A great way to get started immediately. st
If you want advice on a great 1 event or how Spice works, give me a ring and we’ll chat through it. Do you have a friend, work colleague or family member who could do with some added Spice to life? Tell them about us – we’ll thank you and so will they. The Spice Car Sticker – enclosed you will find your Spice Car Sticker – it would be great if you could pop it in your car window to help promote Spice. The more members we have the more events we can plan for you. You’ve joined Spice – help us to get lots more people to join.
What a memorable time we’ve had over the course of the past 3 months – so many great days, nights, weekends and a trip to the Dolomites. Since dancing to Lily Allen at The Concert in the Gardens to welcome in 2015 (after a wee tipple of Champagne at Merchants beforehand) the start of 2015 has been fun filled for Spice. We’ve had a brilliant January Ball at The Hilton Grosvenor with great food, company and the great band Hip Operation, we’ve skied in Cortina, Italy – some stories of missed ski lifts will remain etched in my memories (and a couple of others I dare not mention) for a very long time. We also headed north to Pitlochry for another of our legendary February Bargain Breaks – they keep getting better and better – we have booked Fishers again for 2016 – booking will be available later in the year – date – 26 – 28 February 2016. We’ve walked, dined out in some great restaurants, quizzed – too much to list here. Looking ahead, spring is certainly in the air as Spice heads outdoors for lots of different experiences. Our weekends are booking excellent and at the time of writing this we have very last spaces on our Loch Fyne break in April. Other weekend opportunities include Walking in Ballachullish in April, Montrose in June, Golfing in the Lakes late July, Edinburgh Festivals and Hogmanay, Sailing the Inner Hebrides, A Murder in Dunoon and the fantastic Ballachullish Bargain Break in November. The Newcastle Party Weekend, Seahouses Bunk Break and Scottish Walking are all now full but wait lists are in operation. The great Scottish outdoors is your to explore with more opportunities with Spice than anywhere else to enjoy the skies, the hills, the lochs, the rivers and the land. How about a Tandem Sky Dive or Learn to Play Polo? Maybe a relaxing day on a Narrowboat is more appealing. We have so much going on. With lots of restaurants to visit, pub crawls, bar nights, treasure hunt, walking and sports, variety really is the Spice of Life!

Loch Fyne Leisure Break WHEN: Friday 17 April - Sunday 19 April 2015 WHERE: Based at the Loch Fyne Hotel, Shore Road, Inveraray COST: £164 Member, £184 Guest INCLUDES: 2 nights bed, breakfast, dinner, walks with VC Walk Leader, Local Place of Interest SLOTS: 24 (8 Single and 8 Twin/Doubles) – Lat Spaces A return to one of our favourite hotels, last visited in 2010 – the fantastic Loch Fyne Hotel and Leisure Club in Inveraray. We have secured 24 spaces right on the shores of beautiful Loch Fyne, a little over an hours drive from Glasgow and under two hours from Edinburgh. The former "Capital of Argyll", Inveraray is one of the most beautiful and unusual historic towns in Scotland. Inveraray is the classic 18th-century planned village, with its straight wide streets and dignified Georgian houses, and enjoys the most stunning of settings, on the shores of Loch Fyne. It was rebuilt by the third Duke of Argyll, head of the Campbell clan, at the same time as he restored the nearby family home, which now attracts hordes of summer visitors. As well as its natural beauty and elegance, and fine castle, Inveraray has several other notable attractions in and around the town including Inveraray Castle (opposite); Inveraray Jail; Maritime Museum and Auchindrain Highland Township. There are great local walks in the area around the Loch and through local forests and on Saturday and Sunday, walks led by a VC leader are included in the cost. The Hotel : Loch Fyne Hotel and Leisure Centre Overlooking beautiful Loch Fyne to the Cowal Hills, the Loch Fyne Hotel is the ideal setting to relax and enjoy the surrounding area. Situated on the shores of Loch Fyne in the Royal Burgh of Inveraray, the hotel enjoys wonderful views from the hotel gardens and lounge across the loch to the Cowal Hills. Originally built as a private house, the Loch Fyne Hotel was commandeered during WWII for Combined Operations Training and visited by Eisenhower and Winston Churchill. It has been extended to include a 15 swimming metre pool and jacuzzi overlooking the loch, adjoined by a sauna, steam room and sun deck with hot tub - sheer decadence with unlimited use of leisure facilities included in the cost of the weekend! The Spa has treatment rooms offering a range of therapies including aromatherapy, massage, manicures and pedicures, and their relaxation lounge includes Lloyd Loom wicker recliners and a Japanese Inada physiochair. On our previous visits the food was absolutely stunning! Breakfast & Dinner are served in the Clansman restaurant where a log and peat fire glow on cool evening. Food is as simple and natural as possible, and prides itself on using the finest of local produce - with an emphasis on delicious, locally-caught seafood, where there is the choice from the traditional Table d'hote menu. The hotel is beautifully appointed and also has a pleasant airy bar that looks out across the loch. All bedrooms are en-suite with colour TV and direct dial telephone. We will be offering a walk on each day (around 7 miles on Saturday and 4 miles on Sunday) to explore this gorgeous area of Scotland. We will also visit some local attractions (Inveraray Jail; Maritime Museum eg) for those who don’t want to join the walks. The details of the walks and place of interest will be finalised nearer the time. After your day out you can relax in the leisure club and enjoy the facilites. Book yourself a Sonas Spa visit and treat yourself. (Treatment and costs available HERE) Another brilliant Spice weekend awaits!! Directions: The easiest route to Inverary is via the A82 road, a lovely scenic drive along the western shore on Loch Lomond. At Tarbet turn left onto the A83 passing the Cobbler and over the Rest and Be Thankful. Stay on the A83 following signs for Inverary Continue through the town and the hotel is 1 minutes drive overlooking the Loch. 13

Seahouses Northumberland Bunk Barn BBQ WHEN: Friday 5 June - Sunday 7 June 2015 WHERE: Seahouses, Northumberland NE68 7UR COST: £69 Member, £84 Guest. INCLUDES: 2 nights hostel accommodation, 2 breakfasts, BBQ and walks SLOTS: 32 – Full Waitlist in operation We wanted to feature this break as Spice Yorkshire have chosen a fabulous location for their newest Bunk Barn weekend away. Springhill Farm's Bunk House has stunning views towards the Farne Islands and Cheviot Hills and is perfect for groups with comfortable accommodation without a compromise on quality. With eight bedrooms each holding 4 with their own ensuite facilities. With its breezy, seaside feel the Bunkhouse is different to traditional backpackers style hostels. Come home after a days' exploring to serviced, comfortable, clean rooms, electric/oil heating (hopefully not need for a summer visit!), a well equipped communal living room and a fully equipped self catering kitchen. Wake up each morning to views of Bamburgh Castle, recently voted one of Britain's Favourite Views. Wildlife is one of the major attractions to the area. Directly opposite Springhill are the world-famous Farne Islands, a bird sanctuary which is home to hundreds of thousands of visiting seabirds and one of the UK's largest grey seal colonies. Boat trips to the islands leave from Seahouses during the season (Easter - October). Watch red squirrels roaming the grounds of Alnwick's Hulne Park or why not take a Puffin Cruise to Coquet Island off Amble, where thousands of puffins congregate during the breeding season. Inland find heather moors, rugged countryside and Sites of Special Scientific Interest with bog lands, ancient woodlands and wildflower meadows. Included in the weekend are 2 cooked breakfasts (help with cooking breakfasts and the cleaning up is as always very much welcomed) and we will prepare a BBQ on the Saturday night. You will need to bring bedding with you; either a sleeping bag or a duvet, sheet and pillow. The bunk barn rather unusually, has free Wifi and there is parking onsite. Whether you’re a brand new member, an ‘old hat’ or one of the many that have been with us for a little while, and you like having fun with other like-minded Spice members then this really is a great weekend to book. It’s also a great starter weekend if you’ve not been away with us before - very laid back - you can do as much or as little as you choose; it’s your weekend away. But, be warned – our weekend breaks do sell really, really quickly so get those bookings in ASAP to avoid being disappointed.

Cost of ferrys to the islands Dinner on the rest day. Travel Insurance, room upgrades SLOTS: Up to 36 – Full Wait List in Operation Overview: The Western Isles of Harris, Lewis, North Uist and Taransay are part of the outer Hebrides archipelago. These mysterious islands are steeped in thousands of years of history, folk law and legend with stone circles, brochs, castles standing alongside todays towns and villages. Each island has its own unique character, as diverse and varied as the surrounding landscape where spectacular white beaches, delightful inlets, peaceful bays are set against a backdrop of the rugged machair with the high mountains behind. There is little accommodation on the islands, but for this wonderful trip walkwise have secured the wonderful Harris Hotel in Tarbert, which offers traditional island hospitality, superb food and a relaxing atmosphere. Our fantastic hosts will look after our every need as we head out to explore the islands! WalkWise Walking Programme: Our programme is designed to give everyone a flavour of the islands of Lewis, Harris, South Uist and Taransay, the wide variety of habitats, the inviting beauty, the history and the rugged mountains. Each day we will have two grades of walk, usually in a similar area, with the tougher walkers heading out over wilder and rougher terrain whilst the easier walkers explore the region on easier but no less spectacular routes. Harris is a stunning island in itself, with some of the finest beaches in the UK adorning its western coast. This is set against the large open machair areas and contrast with the east coast which is typified by isolated inlets and rugged bays. The north of Harris changes again becoming much more mountainous and wild with sea lochs cutting into the heart of the mountains. It is here that the harder walker will ascend the Clisham Ridge which leads up to the archipelagos only Corbett An Clisheam at 799m; a spectacular ridge walk with superb views over the whole of Harris. The easier walkers also get to savour this region with remote glen walks that cut through this wild and empty region. One day will see us sailing out a couple of miles off the west coast of Harris to the isle Taransay. The island has some fine sandy silver sand beaches, rock arches, long abandoned villages and these can be combined with the lovely ascent of Beinn na h-Uidhe which should be ascended as affords stunning views back across the island to Harris. For those that are feeling energetic there is a second peak on the island, the islands highest peak, Beinn Ra which has stunning views across the loch to the Mountains of the north. The island has one last treat in store as it has been cleared of Mink and now has breeding population of puffins and Shelduck. And finally there is North Uist, which an island and weather is permitting we will hop over on the ferry to explore it. Once again it has a varied character and the easier walkers cross the sand dunes to walk the beaches of the northwest of the island before making their way back through the harbours and inlets of the east of the island. Meanwhile the harder walkers will pick their way around the numerous lochans to ascent the isolated peak of Eaval and enjoy its amazing panoramic view! So whether you fancy a lower level or a higher level walks you wont be disappointed. The only difficulty is deciding which one to do! So why not come and join us on a week of discovery, nature, laughter and the pleasure of enjoying it with like minded people. Remember to allow you to choose a walk that suits you best, WalkWise will provide two walks on each day, led by professional and knowledgeable walking guides. On all walking days there will be a harder walk of 11 miles with up to 3500ft ascent, and a gentler moderate walk of 7 to 10 miles long with up to1500ft. On certain days our journey will take us past some real gems of the islands and if people wish we may well pause our journeys to explore them too. Accommodation: A warm welcome awaits you at the Harris Hotel which has been a family owned and run hotel for over 100years. It is situated in Tarbert, which is the ideal base from which explore Harris, Lewis and even the Uists to the south. They offer traditional island hospitality, superb food and a relaxing atmosphere, and you canl be assured of an enjoyable and memorable stay, for all the right reasons! Here you can unwind in comfortable and peaceful surroundings and allow the islands to work their magic; inspire dreams, charge passions and enliven your senses. This also applies to whether we stop for lunch or eat while sailing. Our second night will be at a remote anchorage such as Tinker’s Hole or the Island of Ulva. Whatever our destinations we will stop in sheltered waters and the yacht’s inflatable tender may be used for excursions ashore. The price includes tuition, the use of all safety equipment, meals and snacks. If you have a favourite nibble or tipple you are welcome to bring it along.
