Hello and welcome to our Spring newsletter, and a special big warm friendly welcome to each and every one of the couple of thousand new members that have joined us in the last three months, as we have had a record couple of months. It must be the Hollywood factor perhaps – apparently when times get tough, it’s proven people go to the movies more often seeking that little extra fun and escape. So as we are experts in fun, and have plenty of ‘escapes’ every weekend, I guess it’s the Hollywood factor rubbing off!

Presented within, is another huge batch of wonderful events and opportunities to meet people, make friends and have fun with a ready made bunch of like minded people, who joined Spice for all the same reasons you did! If you are new to Spice, the front and back coloured sections relate to the wider world network of Spice groups, while the black and white middle section from page 7 onwards relate to your local branch, and finally the back pages feature some of our many wonderful group holidays. However bear in mind that the printed word is out of date the day after it rolls off the printing press, as we are adding new events to the Programme every day, so do keep looking at the website. We also keep you up to date with weekly email updates featuring the coming weeks events, so make sure you are seeing those. This edition features two of our biggest events, Center Parcs in June – acting as our National Weekend, packed with fun and games, sports, parties – including a ‘Back to School’ themed Disco and a St Trinians style school Sports Day on the Sunday, which will be more laughs than Blackpool fun house. We also announce a brand new big weekend away to Butlins Skegness in October, for a ‘Back to the 70’s Weekend’, packed with the bands we remember so well, including Slade, The Three degrees, Alvin Stardust, and many others. I believe our local programme is better than its ever been, with a rich array of diverse, unusual, funky and fun events, sitting alongside all the standard socials, like Badminton,
Rambles, Theatre and Dining, so we do hope to see you on something very soon, be it Walking with Wolves or Dragon Boat Racing. There are some wonderful new holidays announced to – we have two groups already going off to the Arctic ‘Husky Mushing’ for 5 days early next year, where we head off into the remote frozen wilderness, spending the night sleeping under the northern lights in a hut, with the dogs – yes we like to bring you those once in a lifetime experiences. Our annual Turkey Chillout in October already has over 40 people booked, so no doubt that will be a cracking ‘party’ break if you prefer your holidays more ‘laid back’. Many of the Ski Holidays for next season are also announced, with more to come in the next couple of weeks. We have been pouring over all the statistics and feedback from our national wide Member Satisfaction Survey this past couple of weeks, and I am thrilled to announce we donated £1250 to Comic Relief, as for everyone who spent the 10 mins filling in the form we donated £1. The results and deep analysis will keep us busy for ages, but there are some quick wins, some great suggestions for new programme events, and some fascinating results. One statistic that gives me great comfort is that 93% of you said you always or generally get value for money from both your membership, or events! However rest assured, we will be working to narrow that gap even more for next time. Co-ordination of events was rated 67% Excellent, 32% Average, with less than 1% Poor – a great result we can be quite proud of, and its with huge thanks to all our Volunteer Co-ordinators up and down the country who do such a great job. So enjoy the Spring, take a good look at all the fun times ahead, take some action and I hope to see you on an event soon. Dave National co-ordinator

Why did you join Spice ?
Why did you join Spice
Why did you join Spice
A few contributing factors here, a major change in my personal situation, and recovering from a couple of knee operations. I needed a new direction, I had looked at Spice when I left the TA in 1991 after 13yrs service but never did anything. Now I needed to re motivate myself in a new direction and try and get back into Badminton which I had missed for a few years and meet a whole new Social Group with other activities on offer.
Lots of my friends were settling down and I wanted to do a few new things with a group of people with similar interests
I joined Spice as I wanted to do something a bit different and also wanted to widen my social circle as most of my friends are married with kids so their lives are based around them. I initially booked 3 events to see what I thought of it and loved every minute of it

What has been your favourite event ? Selecting a “favourite” event is very difficult as I have done so many that stand out. The Centre Parcs / It’s a Knock Out, where Manchester came second has to be up there, Dragon Boating is another one, these events bring Spicers from all over the Country together for a week end of Fun, including the Fancy Dress evenings and refresh friendships. But I think my favourite has to be in Scotland for Hogmanay 2011/12 and the “Loony Dook”, which is a swim /paddle in the Firth of Forth at about 9.30am on New Years Day Morning!! Waiting for a bus at 8am in our Fancy Dress outfits and still dark was crazy but funny, but the actual Parade along the road with the Drummer and Piper playing and people cheering was fantastic, then of course the run into the water with hundreds of other nutters will stay with me for a long long time. What would be your advice for a new member ? Spice is a brilliant Social Group, from the moment I attended my first Pub meet and Centre Parcs, everyone is friendly and welcoming and “Have been there “ so are really approachable, look at the list of events and what you think you may like and “book it “, go to New Members Welcome so you meet other newbies and get to know them and after that I promise you won’t look back, I haven’t.Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? I have done several Spice Holidays, my first one in Kos, was a water sports based and is one of the best Holidays I have ever had, I have also done the Ski Holidays which are brilliant, you again meet other “ likeminded people“ from all over the Country and have a great time, I have 2 more booked this Year, a Gulet Cruise in Turkey and Lake Garda in October and I know I will enjoy myself. There is so much choice. What is your life philosophy in one sentence.? Every day is precious, there is much to see and do, Spice can help you all you have to do is BOOK IT.

What has been your favourite event? I have to pick just one?! I've loved so many events for different reasons its really hard to choose - I think I'll go for the Edinburgh Festival Weekend - so much in one weekend - the tattoo was fab, the comedy shows excellent, street acts galore, the walk up Arthur's Seat with a spontaneous choir singing at the top made up of Spicers for a student film, the delicious meal in Merchants and the super picnic in Princes Street Gardens - couldn't have asked for more- can't wait to do it all over again this Summer! What would be your advice for a new member? Give it a go! Go along to an event that you're interested in and there's bound to be someone with a similar interest that you'll get along with and once you've done a few events you're likely to see some familiar faces to do more fab things with! Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? I went skiing for the first time ever in January with Spice Scotland - it was fantastic and despite crashing into the Kindergarten, getting wiped out by a snowboarder and witnessing an avalanche, at the end of the week I was proud to say I could ski!! Had such a great time I couldn't wait till the next one so am all booked up for 2014! What is your life philosophy in one sentence? Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway Four people (alive or dead) you'd invite to your dream dinner party? Nelson Mandela - for his stories of leadership and courage, Joanna Lumley - for her tales of the northern lights (always wanted to see them) and her stories of campaigning, Billy Connelly - for his wit, wisdom and dry sense of humour. Robert the Bruce - for his tales of Scottish Independence back in the 1300's and what we could learn about this for today's debate

What has been your favourite event? My favourite event has to be the Bury Fire Station tour as I got to to sit in the fire engine, tried out the cutting gear on a car and tried on the breathing apparatus etc - this is something I would never of have the opportunity to do. We really did go behind the scenes What has been your most challenging event? My most challenging event has to be Abseiling for the terrified. The actual abseiling/ walking backwards off a cliff was not the problem, it was the height of the cliff as I am terrified of heights and hadn`t taken this into account even though it wasn`t really high What is your funniest memory in Spice? My funniest Spice memory was when I was car sharing to an event and trying to convince the driver that the small dirt track off the main dual carriageway that we were on, really was the right way to go - you had to be there to see the funny side of it but we were on the right track What would be your advice for a new member? Just book a couple of events to see how you get on, I wish I had found Spice sooner. Everybody you meet is really friendly and the majority of people on the events do not know each other and hosts make sure that nobody is left out Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? I have just booked my 1st holiday with Spice, I`m going on the Turkey Chill Out in Sept/Oct which incidently flies on my birthday What is your life philosophy in one sentence? You can do anything you want, the only person stopping you is yourself............ Your favourite movie? I have 2 favourite movies, both oldies - An Officer and a Gentleman and Pretty Woman. Hmmm, maybe there`s a Richard Gere connection somewhere

Sheena Brabazon is a regular dance leader for Spice and she will be showing you the moves for some wonderful great group (no partner needed) sessions, including Black Eyes Peas (Good, good, night) and the iconic Thriller! Go along to just one or both and laughs are guaranteed! Numbers are limited to max 100 per session and will be on a first come basis. On Sunday we have a very special optional event with our own School Sports Day – starting at 1.00pm at the Golf Driving Range. All the traditional school sports, egg and spoon, sack race, bean bags, sprint, three legged races all in a thrilling atmosphere. Due to the additional cost to hire the Golf Range, PA System, and to provide kit in this event, there is an additional cost of £10 per person to take part. Book it separately. Limited slots at 200, first come first served. This is only available to those who have booked the weekend! Medals and trophies and Champagne showers to finish! Our accommodation is in beautifully located villas surrounded by woodland alive with cheeky not so ‘wild’ life. Please advise at the time of booking if you have rooming requests, we will do our best to accommodate these but due to the mix of rooms, and villa sizes, cannot be guaranteed. All bedding is provided, as is household equipment. Food is not included, so you can self cater or eat out at a variety of on-site restaurants. Friday Night sees our Welcome Disco and Saturday night a Spice Disco with a late bar. Both Parties are included in the price and a Spice wrist band will be included with your weekend joining pack, giving you entry to the parties and our events. The Saturday night party theme this visit ties in with our School Sports Day - ‘Back to School!’ which couldn’t be easier and adds a bit of Spice to the weekend! You get to use your costume twice! So this could be a relaxed, laid back break, or an energetic dash from one activity to another - you choose! You can check in from 12.00 noon on Friday (villa available from 3.00pm) and leave the Villa by 10.00am Monday morning. Many of us arrive Friday after work, and depart Sunday evening of course, but it’s your choice. You can remain on site all day on Monday if you wish, and many of us have a morning at The Spa as it’s quiet! Spice Scotland Local Pages Welcome to the spring edition of the Spice Live It Newsletter. Looking out the window when writing this and it’s certainly not spring – it just won’t stop snowing and it’s April! It’s been a brilliant 3 months since I last wrote and in that time we have enjoyed skiing in Chamonix, Wobbly Walking in the Lakes, an fantastic January Ball with Hip Operation – how long ago does that feel, and the legendary February Bargain Break – how kind was that weather for us when compared to recent conditions. Lots of meal, days and nights out – I hope you’ve enjoyed and are looking forward to what’s coming up. I’m really excited about the weekend programme for the rest of the year – We have social breaks in Newtonmore, Arrochar, Inverurie and Ballachullish. A party break in Newcastle, Murder Mystery at Loch Lomond, Golf in Galloway, Sailing Scotland’s coasts and more walking than you could wish for – Glensheil, Arrochar, Fort William, Crianlarich and more in the planning stage. Having gone live with the Spice Scotland Ski 2014 ay Alpes D’Huez the take up has been impressive – over 20 booked and we are now down to last spaces – don’t miss out and get your deposit down now. I keep saying it but get a break booked – you really will love it! It’s a full programme right through until the end of June – lots of social days and nights to relax and enjoy, plenty of events to get you out to experience Scotland’s great outdoors and local events to head along too – there’s nothing better than a Spice crowd, always great company. As always I look forward to seeing you on an event soon

Welcome to New Members You’ve taken the first steps and joined Spice, and the next step is to come along to your first event. I know this can be a daunting prospect when you don’t know anyone else in the group, but there’s no need to be apprehensive – Spicer’s are a friendly bunch. Most of us come along on our own to events so we are all well used to meeting and welcoming new people. We also remember what it was like booking our first event and turning up apprehensively not quite knowing what to expect. Please don’t worry. You have nothing to fear except a new and exciting circle of friends – and other people just like st you. A great way of ‘getting into’ Spice is by booking a soon as you can and getting the 1 event ‘under your belt’. Even better, try a weekend away and this way you get to know a smaller group of people extremely well. If you’ve not been to a Preview Evening we probably won’t know you, so next time I am on the same event please come up and say hello so I can put a face to the name! If you have any queries at all please give me call at the office and I’ll always do my utmost to help you.

Jen’s Cateran Trail Walking II Friday 5th– Sunday 7th April 2013 (2 nights) The Angus Hotel, Blairgowrie, PH10 6NQ £119 Members, £139 Guests. £35 single Supp, 2 Nights Dinner, Bed & Breakfast, 2 Days Cateran Trail Walking led by Jennifer Potter 15 (5 Single and 5 Twin/Double) Join us for the second Cateran Trail weekend with Jennifer Potter. This weekend st is a stand alone break and suitable for those who missed the 1 trip back in October. From the Middle Ages until the 17th century Scotland was a wild, rowdy place and cattle rustling was commonplace. The Caterans were marauding cattle thieves who flourished in the more lawless regions of the Highlands. More feared than wolves, cateran raiding parties numbered from 50 to 500 fierce warriors. They would descend from their rough bothies high in the mountains to wreak havoc on the prosperous and peaceful farmland below, driving stolen cattle and booty through remote glens using ancient drove routes. Hundreds of years later this illegal activity is gloriously celebrated in THE CATERAN TRAIL - a circular waymarked walk following many of the routes that the Caterans used all those years ago. Our route along part of this this historic path, led by Jennifer Potter will be divided into sections – Saturday and Sunday. It is all on designated pathways with no major ascents so you do not have to be super fit or an experienced munro-bagger, however you will be walking for up to 7 hours each day so you must be an enthusiastic walker, with reasonable fitness and must wear appropriate walking footwear and carry waterproofs, a packed lunch – available to purchase locally, and sufficient drinks and snacks for the walk. Signposts, stiles and bridges marked with the Trail logo and direction arrows allow for easy route identification. It follows old drove roads, ancient tracks and minor roads and passes through farmland and forests. Most of the Trail is suitable only for walkers due to the terrain, many deer fences and ladder stiles. We will walk at a leisurely place allowing time to take in the magnificent countryside and history of this fascinating area. Our accommodation is at The Angus Hotel in Blairgowrie. This 3 star hotel offers comfortable rooms, good food and leisure facilities (particularly welcome at the end of the day). Included in the cost of the weekend are 2 nights dinner bed and breakfast accommodation, use of leisure facilities and Cateran Trail walks led by Jen. The Walking: The weekend follows two more sections of the Cateran Trail. Saturday – Spittal of Glenshee to Kirkton of Glenisla Sunday: Kirkton of Glenisla to Alyth WHEN: WHERE: COST: INCLUDES: SLOTS:

The wall stretches 73 miles from coast to coast and was begun in AD122 under the command of Emperor Hadrian to mark the northern limit of the mighty Roman Empire. It may come as a surprise to some to know that it is not just a wall, there are numerous forts, mile castles, bridges, roads, towns, dwellings and temples. Today nearly 2000 years later, much of it still remains, so much so that it is now designated a World Heritage site. The best preserved sections of the wall lie between Lanercost Priory in the West and Chesters Cavalry Fort in the East and it is no coincidence that this also happens to encompass the wildest, most inaccessible and arguably the most beautiful landscape with dramatic ridges, open moors, long escarpments, lochs and deep river valleys. The bank holiday walking programme of 6 walks over the three days concentrates on the very finest sections of the wall and the surrounding area. Our hotel for the trip is the comfortable Gilsland Spa which with ensuite rooms, well stocked bar and hearty food is ideally located just a mile from the wall itself. Remember on each day WalkWise UK will provide a minimum of two walks on each day,so you can choose how you are feeling on the day and select the walk that suits you best! These walks will be led by professional and knowledgeable walking guides. Booking onto Events: • •
A secure booking service is available at www.spicescotland.com or.. Call us on 0131 553 0026 to book over the phone or..
Please note: Bookings are only secure when payment has been received. You may lose your slot if another member books whilst your ‘cheque is in the post’. Never simply ‘turn up’ at an event as it’s unfair to all concerned – particularly to those who have taken the time to book. It may also mean a wasted journey if we can’t accommodate you. Late Bookings: We often have slots available at the last minute due to cancellations etc. Please call the office for details and be ready to pay by card to secure your place. Some events do fill up so the best advice is to book early to avoid disappointment. Confirmation of Bookings: We confirm all bookings by email if you have given us your email address. You can also check your bookings at www.spicescotland.com. We will contact you if there is a problem with your booking or if the event has been postponed or cancelled. You will be sent a text on the day (or on Friday for a weekend event) with final meeting details. For some events (particularly weekends away) you will receive a joining pack about 2 weeks before departure. This will be sent by email and will include directions, what to take, itinerary and transport share options. If you do not have access to email and would prefer a paper pack in the post please let the Spice office know at the time of booking. If you can’t make an event: If at all possible, please contact the Spice office or the event coordinator if you have their number. This is important for several reasons. Firstly, other members may be left waiting for you to arrive and this is unfair. Secondly some events require minimum numbers and your no show could mean we drop below these numbers. Finally, if you let us know you cannot attend we may be able to issue a refund depending on the type of event and whether we can resell your place. For full details please see the Spice Cancellation Policy. Guests: You may see an event with a Guest Fee applicable. Guests are welcome to attend Spice Events at a special price. The member who books a guest is responsible for their conduct on the event and is responsible for passing on any event information, particularly late changes to the event etc. We also ask that each guest attend only 3 events, after which time we would expect them to join – in the long run this can work out cheaper as they avoid paying premiums. Transport Share: We are always happy to do our best to link up members for travel share. Once you have booked an event, you can obtain car share info by pressing the ‘Transport’ tab on the relevant event online. Pleas eremember to indicate when booking should you require a lift, are willing to offer or share transport. There is also an option for your details to remain confidential, please let the Spice office know if you want to be removed. Please note: Lift sharing is done by the goodwill of the members and cannot be guaranteed. Most Importantly: Above all, Spice is all about enjoying yourself – so remember to have fun!

SPICE SCOTLAND EVENT LISTINGS SPRING 2013 The Spice Member Survey 2013 Thank you to everyone who completed the Spice Member Survey 2013 – not only have you given us an invaluable insight into how we are doing and what you would like us to do but you have also helped us raise £1250 for Comic Relief!
The Results I have read though every single Scottish member response and each positive, negative, suggestion and idea has been noted – it’s all great stuff! Spice Value for Money? – 94% of members who answered the question feel they are receiving good value for money for their membership and that increases to 98.4% who feel our events are good value too – We work hard to negotiate with suppliers etc to get competitive pricing for events. Whilst we seek events at a good price we do try to not compromise on quality and it appears we succeed. How do we look after you – Event Coordination? – 85% say event coordination is excellent and 15% average – that’s 100% happy – really good news – thank you to everyone who has met, greeted or looked after an event for us – we can’t do it with out you. Administration? - We asked about how we answer the phone, politeness, email replies, joining instructions etc – Almost 95% of you were thought we were good or excellent when dealing with you. This I am delighted with and we will continue to improve and deal with your queries immediately if possible. Communications – This offered some of the more surprising results – 81% now communicate with Spice via the website and tend to book events there. 72% of members were in favour of seeing the Live It Newsletter being dropped – I was not expecting that! It is inevitable the Newsletter will change over time and maybe one day in the future be put out to pasture but for the time being there are no plans to change this and we will continue to send a quarterly copy to you. Lastly – 70% of members who completed the questionnaire are now on Facebook – make sure you like our Facebook page – the more people who like it the more active the page will be. Events – Your favourite events are Weekends, Walking and Social – Adventure is your least favourite followed by Workshops. You would like to see more Sports in the programme but overall the amount of events listed meets your requirements – The number and amount of events is reviewed all the time and unfortunately in the current economic climate some events are no longer available or simply too expensive to package anymore. That said, just because we can’t do it today, tomorrow is another day – if you have a suggestion please let us know – if we can run it we will! Lastly – Some feedback asked if we could provide activities on weekends similar to The February Bargain Break – I do admit that weekend is extraordinary value for money – but many hotels we use don’t have the facilities to host such evenings (we’d end up back at the same hotel all the time). There’s also the cost – at around £1000 for a disco and ceildh it’s not possible on any other weekend break – it could add a small fortune to the member weekend cost. Once again I thank you for completing the Survey.
