We are here!

Well here we go again…it’s that time again and your summer newsletter is here! It only seems like a few weeks ago that I was sat here penning the spring introduction and so much has happened in what seems such a short space of time… Center Parcs has been (and gone) and what a superb weekend was had by all – ‘P’ was the fancy dress theme and as you can imagine the costumes came in all guises and as usually Spice members didn’t let us down; there was a great quiz, group sports, bike rides, a leisurely walk and our fantastic Double x Triple Challenge event (including scavenger hunt, photo and pose competition) plus the usual shenanigans all laid on to make a very memorable weekend. And a special thank you to the members that contributed to the testimonial video. In the spring newsletter you should have received a car sticker which we hope is now pride of place on your chosen vehicle. We did get some pictures sent to us and it’s all appreciated to help spread the Spice word. If you do not have one please ask your local office and they can send one out to you. We a have also had a few Facebook competitions recently including a fun Spice pet picture competition where we got pets in some very unusual situations! We also have been working hard to bring more Spice benefits to you so along with the familiar discounts offered with Exodus and Club Dance holidays there are a couple of new ones with

Go Ape and Merlin Attractions which incorporates 18 attractions up and down the country - if you love this kind of adrenaline thrill there are many attractions you could visit including Alton Towers. Some might say it’s not the best time to start working with Alton Towers however we are assured that the whole park has been cleared for safety. We will be promoting exclusive Go Ape and Merlin Attraction days so watch this space. Over the coming pages you’ll not only find your local group quarterly round up but hopefully some interesting articles and a piece on Chilling out with Spice plus a brand new concept to promote healthy living - Zestember!

I joined Spice to experience many different activities I would not achieve on my own whilst making new friends from all over the UK. What has been your favourite event? My favourite event was Pitlochry bargain break weekend walking dancing eating laughing and making new friends.Most challenging event was the tank driving experience but a great stress buster I have been on 3 weekends in the UK with Spice Ballachulish, Pitlochry and Seahouses all were brilliant. I am going to Thailand in October which I am very excited about.

What would be your advice for a new member? My advice to new members would be to remember everyone has taken that first step on a first event. Plan an adventure activity and go for it, as everyone is welcoming. Have you any funny Spice moment you care to share? Funniest moment has to be splattered with mud whilst tank driving. What is your life philosophy in one sentence. Live Love Laugh and try to keep a life balance. Your favourite movie? Evita the musical. Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Julie Walters, Rick Stein, My late Grandfather and The Dalai Lama. Most treasured belonging? I treasure photographs and all the memories that go with them.

How long have you been a Spice member? About 9 years Why did you join Spice? Wanted to balance a ‘Normal’ day job with a bucket full of madness at the weekends! What has been your favourite event? Where to start. Probably the fire breathing as I got to convince my kids that Daddy was part Dragon!!! What has been your most challenging event? Yorkshire 3 peaks walk. 26miles over 3 large hills in under 11hrs...phew! What is your funniest memory in Spice? Being on a Latin dance weekend and being fed chocolate dipped strawberries by the delightfully camp waiter. What would be your advice for a new member? Carpe Diem....seize the day and just go for it. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Not currently but I have been eyeing up the white water rafting trip down though the Grand Canyon. Big one from the ‘ole bucket list. Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? Waddling down the street in the ‘duck-type’ outfit when doing River Bugging in Scotland. What is your life philosophy in one sentence. It’s not about the amount of breaths you take in life, but the amount of times your breath is taken away!!! Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Harrison Ford: The paramount movie star, from Han Solo to Indiana Jones, Confucius: Chinese teacher, editor, politician, and philosopher, Julius Caesar: Emperor or tyrant, either way a fascinating man in a fascinating time, Stephen Fry: QI host, ultimate sapiosexual and master of witty banter.

I joined Spice to meet new friends and do more interesting events after my break-up. Now I have the new best friends in the world from Spice which will be friends for life. What has been your favourite event? My favourite event has been the fire eating. I believe it was my first or second event and I haven’t looked back since. Life is there to be lived and break the norm of everyday living. It gave me the confidence to try new things and afterwards I believed I could solve any problem after facing a flame coming towards me in the wind and swallowing it lol. What would be your advice for a new member? Take the plunge and book events where you are going to meet new people and build new friendships. Break tradition and your daily schedule and prove it to yourself that you make the most out of life and anything is possible. Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? Lots of embarrassing moments in Spice but all happy memories, It’s A Knockout event went into event hung-over and completely went the wrong way on the course still drunk from the night before and cost our team the points oh dear! What is your life philosophy in one sentence. Live your day as its your last day on earth as it will never come around again

Your favourite movie? Shawshank Redemption - avoided it for years, but when I eventually watched it I was blown away!

Your favourite movie? ‘One Moment in Time’ with Christopher Reeve which hides my romantic side very well but I love the idea of time travel and of course a happy ending.

Most treasured belonging? Being chief Geek I would have to say my PC! It’s my link to the outside crazy world of the internet, my chronicler of memories, and my escape from reality via Games.

Chill out with Spice! By Ian Purvis

Who doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enjoy getting away from it all and putting your feet upâ&#x20AC;Śgrab a good book and let the sun slowly bake you, or get out and explore some local culture, even a spot of shopping never goes amiss!

Well here at Spice this is what we call a Chill out – do as much (or as little) as you like and whether you want to be on your own or right in the middle of the action or even jump between the two there’s always the chance for you to do what you want – after all it is your holiday! We know that your holiday is your chance to get away from it all and recharge your battery – after all you deserve it! Whether your chosen method for this is to sleep late and party hard or take it easy and relax by a pool sipping your chosen beverage you can do it all with Spice and what’s more you get to do it amongst friends. Our Chill out breaks have proven to be extremely popular since their inception over 10 years ago. Back then the tendency was for not so much a Chill out than a blow out with many members coming back in need of another holiday (but for all the right reasons!). Don’t get us wrong there’s still plenty of opportunity for everyone to get into mischief (the older we all get the less wise we all seem!) but many of you also want to make the most of the areas you are visiting, getting out and about to explore. This year our Chill outs are destined for 4 different countries – Spain, Portugal, Italy and Turkey. Our 5* Amazing Algarve Chill out at the start of June has just returned – this was a brand new destination for 2015 staying in a superb 5* hotel just outside Faro and the feedback so far has been excellent, plus with prices starting from just £599 half board it was really well received with over 30 Spicers enjoying a bit of early summer sun with temperature around 30 every day! The next one after that is not until September when we have our Turkish Gulet Cruise Chill out and you don’t get much more laid back than this one. After 7 days relaxing on a traditional Turkish gulet with all your meals included and cooked on board by the resident chef you’ll be that chilled out you might even forget how to write!

Our second Chill out in September is again to Turkey but this time we are on the mainland and we visit Orkatenk, a small town outside of Bodrum and we have been going there since 2007. It’s ever so popular and our groups vary for around 30 to 70 – there are water sports available too so it’s a great all round destination for you to relax in. September is a great time for a Chill out as the temperatures are still warm (usually anyway but not even Spice can make any promises on that front!), the kids are back in school and flight prices have started to drop a little. That’s why we have yet another Chill out, this time to Spain to the small town of Calpe just north of Benidorm. We have a lovely 4* hotel awaiting you with a gorgeous pool and spa, the town has a great beach and plenty of local bars for you to let your hair down in. And finally, for this year anyway, we have our extremely popular Lake Garda Autumn Chill out which we have run for the last 5 years. Lake Garda is a truly wonderful destination with so much to offer and places to explore – just hop on one of the ferry’s and you can have days exploring North and South of the Lake, plus Verona and at a push Venice (although it’s a very long day!) can be reached in a day’s excursion. Maybe this trip is so popular because it’s only 6 days so doesn’t use too much holiday or maybe its the free bar on 4 nights that makes it so popular (hmmm I wonder!) but the trip this year only has a few places left and we have an entire hotel exclusively for Spice! We are just starting to plan for next year but we are hoping to add some new destinations such as Cyprus and Croatia and I’m sure we will be repeating some of the successful ones from this year!

Most of us have of it but how about being part of it… Every year in the small Spanish town of Buñol the streets are taken over with this amazing spectacle and run red (literally) with rivers of tomato juice! Thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this ‘World’s Biggest Food Fight’ where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. Prior to 2013 anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000 (reported to be 50,000 in 2012) people crammed into this huge tomato fight, greatly expanding Bunol’s normal 9,000 person population. However, since the 2013 event official ticketing was put into place limiting the number of participants to just 20,000 lucky people and you could be one! Welcome to new members You’ve taken the first steps and joined Spice; the next step is to come along to your first event. I know this can be a daunting prospect when you don’t know anyone else in the group but there’s no need to be apprehensive, Spice are a friendly bunch. Most of us come along on our own to events so we’re all well used to meeting and welcoming new people. A great way of getting into Spice is by booking your first events right away and getting your first event “under your belt”. Even better is to try a weekend away and get to know a smaller group of people really well. If you’ve not been to a Spice Preview Night we hold them most months, so do make an effort to come to one of these, and please next time I am on an event, come up and say hello so I can put a face to the name! After preview evenings we sometimes follow with new members dinners. A great way to get started immediately.

It’s been an extremely busy few months with many members enjoying lots of different activities all over Scotland. Some of the highlights include stunning weekends on our Loch Lyne social and Ballachullish walking break. We’ve fine dined in lots of restaurants, crawled around Edinburgh and Glasgow pubs and spent a good while on the water with our Powerboat Tour and Inchcolm Sightseeing. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed myself and I hope you have too. As we head into summer the focus moves toward the Edinburgh Fringe and an excellent choice of shows, meals, walks, ceilidh and a lovely picnic in Princes Street Gardens. Please come and join us as we welcome around 70 southern members to Scotland as part of the Festival Weekend celebrations. There is so much going on throughout the summer so make sure you get yourself booked onto an event today. You should now be receiving our weekly email update. This is a short round up of what’s been going on, some event pictures and great events in the coming weeks. We will also announce new events and expect to see the content grow as time goes on. We are always looking for new event ideas and some of the best ones have come from you, the members – if you have a favourite venue, skill we can use or simply enjoy walking and would like to lead a Spice walk please let me know. Gulabin House is a beautifully designed modern building with fantastic features. The lounge is open plan with a 60 inch flat screen TV, a feature swedish log burning stove (16kw) and a spiral staircase to the upper level. The kitchen is equipped with all the modern appliances including a dishwasher and wine cooler. There is a bathroom downstairs, and a further family bathroom upstairs and 2 ensuite bedrooms. In total there are 5 bedrooms sleeping 12 in total (4 upstairs/1 downstairs). Underfloor heating provides the heating on the lower level with standard radiators on the upper level. Gulabin House offers self catering accommodation but breakfast and dinner is included in the cost of your weekend (dinner Friday and Sat, breakfast Sat and Sun - we will need to coordinate between those booked who brings tea, coffee, snacks, treats and your favourite tipple etc – details will be provided nearer the time). We run this weekend in March 2015 and the house is fantastic, the company even better. These mysterious islands are steeped in thousands of years of history, folk law and legend with stone circles, brochs, castles standing alongside todays towns and villages. Each island has its own unique character, as diverse and varied as the surrounding landscape where spectacular white beaches, delightful inlets, peaceful bays are set against a backdrop of the rugged machair with the high mountains behind. There is little accommodation on the islands, but for this wonderful trip walkwise have secured the wonderful Harris Hotel in Tarbert, which offers traditional island hospitality, superb food and a relaxing atmosphere. Our fantastic hosts will look after our every need as we head out to explore the islands! WalkWise Walking Programme: Our programme is designed to give everyone a flavour of the islands of Lewis, Harris, South Uist and Taransay, the wide variety of habitats, the inviting beauty, the history and the rugged mountains. Each day we will have two grades of walk, usually in a similar area, with the tougher walkers heading out over wilder and rougher terrain whilst the easier walkers explore the region on easier but no less spectacular routes. Harris is a stunning island in itself, with some of the finest beaches in the UK adorning its western coast. This is set against the large open machair areas and contrast with the east coast which is typified by isolated inlets and rugged bays. The north of Harris changes again becoming much more mountainous and wild with sea lochs cutting into the heart of the mountains. It is here that the harder walker will ascend the Clisham Ridge which leads up to the archipelagos only Corbett An Clisheam at 799m; a spectacular ridge walk with superb views over the whole of Harris. The easier walkers also get to savour this region with remote glen walks that cut through this wild and empty region. One day will see us sailing out a couple of miles off the west coast of Harris to the isle Taransay. The island has some fine sandy silver sand beaches, rock arches, long abandoned villages and these can be combined with the lovely ascent of Beinn na h-Uidhe which should be ascended as affords stunning views back across the island to Harris. For those that are feeling energetic there is a second peak on the island, the islands highest peak, Beinn Ra which has stunning views across the loch to the Mountains of the north. The island has one last treat in store as it has been cleared of Mink and now has breeding population of puffins and Shelduck. And finally there is North Uist, which an island and weather is permitting we will hop over on the ferry to explore it. Once again it has a varied character and the easier walkers cross the sand dunes to walk the beaches of the northwest of the island before making their way back through the harbours and inlets of the east of the island. Meanwhile the harder walkers will pick their way around the numerous lochans to ascent the isolated peak of Eaval and enjoy its amazing panoramic view!

Then it’s time for a safety briefing followed by a demonstration of the yacht’s equipment and, if possible, a short practice sail in sheltered waters where the Skipper will show you how to steer the yacht and handle the sails. In the morning, with a fair wind, we will set sail across the Firth of Lorne. The crew’s progress in learning how to handle the yacht, and the wind direction, will decide on Saturday evening’s destination. It would be our intention to sail around the Island of Mull over a 3 day weekend and visit the Islands off the west of Mull like Iona and Staffa. This also applies to whether we stop for lunch or eat while sailing. Our second night will be at a remote anchorage such as Tinker’s Hole or the Island of Ulva. Our third night will probably be spent in Tobermory Bay where we can end up enjoying the local nightlife. Whatever our destinations we will stop in sheltered waters and the yacht’s inflatable tender may be used for excursions ashore. The price includes tuition, the use of all safety equipment, meals and snacks. If you have a favourite nibble or tipple you are welcome to bring it along. You will have to bring waterproofs (some help can be given with those), warm clothes, a hat, sleeping bag, soft soled non-slip shoes and wellington boots. Cars may be parked free of charge at Oban. Scotrail run a regular service between Glasgow Queen Street station and Oban. Citylink run 3 express coaches a day from Glasgow and once a day from Edinburgh. The Murder Mystery Arrive at the hotel on Friday at your leisure, dinner is served at 7.30pm sharp; join the other members, hotel guests and actors in the great dining room for dinner where all the action begins. Once the plot has been set finish the night off with our entertainer, enjoy a drink and relax listening to the music or after a few more tipples enjoy a good dance all night. Joanne's Walk - East and West Lomond Date: Sunday 5th July 2015 Place: East and West Lomond, Nr Falkland, Fife Time: 10:45am Cost: £5 Member, £6 Guest This is a lovely walk courtesy of Joanne Asybury with fantastic views of Fife on a good day. We start our walk by passing through historic Falkland village and heading into Maspie Den with its woods, waterfalls and streams. After enjoying the waterfall we will then make our ascent to the top of our first hill West Lomond with stunning 360 views. We descend to the Ballo Reservoir en route to the second ascent of the day, East Lomond then return to Falkland village. You’ll need good walking boots, waterproofs, warm clothes (it might be windy at the top) poles if you use them, packed lunch and plenty of water/drinks. Start time/place: 10.45am at the carpark in the centre of Falkland (next to the Library) Distance –8 ½ miles approx. Terrain- mixed, paved, woodland, open hill side - could be a bit muddy in places. Level – you will need a reasonable level of fitness (as climbing two hills). West Lomond (522 m) and East Lomond (448 m) Duration – 5 hours approx including breaks

Narrow Boat Day and Picnic Date: Sunday 5th July 2015 Place: Leomington, Canal Basin, Manse Road, Linlithgow (EH49 6AJ) Time: 11am Cost: £22 Member, £24 Guest We have chartered the Leamington Narrow Boat, a traditional narrow boat 30ft long with a diesel engine. There is an enclosed cabin and an open foredeck (with curtains), a toilet and sink. The Leamington can carry 12 passengers each of whom takes turn of being the skipper for the day. We will have full and private access to the narrow boat from 11am to 3.30pm as we take it in turns to drive this remarkable boat along the Linlithgow Canal. The Leamington is a simple vessel but the best (and possibly) and only way of experiencing the Linlithgow Canal at it’s very best – on the water. Also included in this unforgettable day out will be our Spice Picnic – always impressive – Prosecco, strawberries, cheeses, cold meats, dips, chocolate – you get the idea! Alison's Walk - Burntisland Links and The Binn Date: Saturday 11th July 2015 Place: Burntisland and The Binn Time: 10:30am Cost: £5 Member, £6 Guest Join walk leader Alison Burns for a stunning spring walk on the Fife coast. From Burntisland Links we head briefly through the town, then we have an easy, gradual, ascent through woods past Binn Pond and on the craggy hill called The Binn. From The Binn we get wonderful views to the south across the Forth. Continuing eastwards, we descend past the ruins of a hamlet (Binnend) which was abandoned in 1954. We continue on good paths to pass Craigencalt Farm and Ecology Centre and round the eastern shore of Kinghorn Loch. On reaching the western edge of Kinghorn we join the Fife Coastal Path for our return to Burntisland. Weather and tides permitting, we will return along the beach, rather than the standard pavement route. Distance approx 7 miles, ascent 200 metres and duration 3.5 to 4 hours depending on stops. Walking boots recommended. Meet Alison in the car park at the west end of Burntisland Links (Links Place) at 10.30am, please bring a packed lunch.

We take a half mile diversion to, the Applebank Inn, one of the most haunted pubs in UK. Spicers have the option of having lunch in the pub, simply have a drink (not included), or alternatively sit outside with a snack (provided) After our stop, we will return to the Country Park, pass by the Cadzow Oaks ( 600 years old & some of the oldest trees in the UK) , and the ruined Cadzow Castle. Distance - 6 ½ miles; 2 ½ - 3 hours (not including lunch stop) Directions: By car head to Strathclyde Country park & take the next left onto M74 heading to Carlisle. After a mile or two, you will see signs for - take the Hamilton turn off & head into Hamilton itself staying in the left hand lane. Continue up the hill & at the set of traffic lights go left. Shortly, you pass Avonbridge Hotel & up a large hill. After a couple of minutes the road flattens out & the park entrance is clearly marked on your right hand side. Drive into the park & the best car parks are located right at the far end of the road, prior to a no entry sign for the Chatelherult Country Park itself). The car park is situated right beside a children's adventure playground area and near the Vistor Centre.

Under Dale’s expert guidance, both beginners and more accomplished artists should have a highly enjoyable afternoon and learn some new artistic skills. NOTE: Please take along a basic set of watercolour paints and pallet, an A4 or A3 drawing pad, at least 2 brushes (large and small), and something to support the pad whilst drawing. These are easily and cheaply available from any good arts supplier or good stationer. It passes the dramatic Neidpath Castle before crossing the river to climb to a viewpoint before descending through the woods. Paths are mostly riverside and woodland with a short section of minor road. The paths are rough in places so please wear suitable walking shoes/boots and warm clothing. This walk is around 3 ½ miles in length and should take around 2 hours. Whilst the walk has an ascent of around 100 meters it is suitable for all. Please meet at Kingsmeadows Car Park in Peebles.

The Elie Chain Walk on the Fife coast features a series of chains that enables walkers to access the scrambling route ‘via ferrata’ style and forms part of the Fife Coastal Path. You will scramble up and down rocks, past rock pools and over sandy beaches. If you keep your eyes peeled you might even see a seal! A general level of fitness is required, but the walk is suitable for anyone with a keen sense of adventure. Participants are required to wear loose fitting/non restrictive clothing appropriate for the weather, with secure and supportive footwear. A change of clothes and a towel are also recommended (hopefully they won't be needed though!). There will be an opportunity to stop for a lunch break at one of the days many scenic spots. Alan's Walk - Calderglen Country Park Date: Saturday 19th September 2015 Place: Calderglen Country Park (G75 0QZ) Time: 11am Cost: £5 Member, £6 Guest Calderwood estate was once dubbed 'one of the loveliest of western glens, magnificent in its grouping of craggy heights, sprinkled with trees and with the amber-tinted Calder winding through the richly wooded and festooned valley'. It was opened to the public in the early 1900s under the ownership of the Scottish Cooperative Society, but the formal gardens and indeed the whole estate later fell into disrepair, with the Castle itself being demolished in the 1950s. Today the estate is a Country Park and this linear walk heads to the former site of the castle. The walk is about 5 miles in length and suitable for all. Jen's Walk - Bealach na Searmoin and Killiecrankie Date: Saturday 26th September 2015 Place: Bealach na Searmoin and Killiecrankie Time: 10am Cost: £5 Member, £6 Guest A circular walk in the beautiful Perthshire countryside. Location: Meet at The Pitlochry Train Station car park [Station Road Perth & Kinross, Pitlochry PH16 5AN- pay and display]. A varied, way-marked route across open moorland with great views and returning via the River Garry and Loch Faskally, with views of the Soldier's Leap at Killiecrankie. Clear paths, sometimes boggy tracks and minor roads with a hilly section over the Bealach and a gentle climb to Moulin from Pitlochry. From the centre of Pitlochry we head to the outskirts of Moulin. At the main Ben Vrackie car park we will head uphill until we reach the Bealach na Searmoin (pass of the sermon) enjoying the views of Ben Vrackie and then over to Blair Atholl as the path starts to descend. From here we head towards Killiecrankie There is a visitors centre here with toilets and refreshments. A short detour takes us down steps and woodland down to the River Garry. We will head to the ‘Soldier's Leap’ to see the spot where one Government soldier successfully leapt the 5.5 metre river to escape the pursuing Highlanders during the battle of Killiecrankie. Return from this short detour will continue on our way back towards Pitlochry following the river downstream through picturesque woodland. Comfortable clothes, waterproofs and walking boots are recommended. Some sunshine might be about so a hat and sunscreen would be an idea. Bring some lunch and plenty of fluid. DISTANCE: 10 miles. The Baltic Ice Bar has arrived. The 25-person capacity ice-bar is to be constructed entirely of ice serves a selection of alcoholic and nonalcoholic concoctions chilled to perfection. You will discover the walls, bar, tables and even the glasses are made of ice! The temperature inside is minus -5C so Snow Factor will provide you a with snug jacket for your visit. We arrive for 5.30pm where a welcome drink is on offer. At 6pm we enjoy a 45 minute Ice Bar visit where alcoholic or non alcoholic drink (with top up) will be served. After our session we head to Bar Varia for a 1 course bite to eat from the menu (excludes Uber burger, table breaker platters and steak). This is sure to be a unique experience.
