History of The Riverview Hotel The Riverview Hotel began as a two story hunting and fishing lodge built by Captain S.H Barber in 1885. Barber was a part-time carpenter and the bridge tender for what was then Coronado Beach (Now New Smyrna Beach). With the success of Henry Flagler’s railroad making Florida a tourist destination for many northerners during the winter months, in 1910 Captain Barber and John Vrooman raised up the existing building to serve as the second and third stories, building a new lobby and dining room underneath. Essentially turning it from a house to a hotel. After managing the hotel from 1930-31 Fred Tyron purchased the Barber Hotel in 1936 changing the name from the “Barber Hotel” to the “Riverview Hotel.” Fred Tyron was a man of great hotel experience. Before moving to New Smyrna, he was the head chef at the Alcazar Hotel in Saint Augustine, once owned by Henry Flagler himself. He then proceeded to build the west wing of the hotel and added the individual bathrooms and steam heat. However keep in mind air conditioning was not widely used yet, so guest kept their cool by opening all the doors and letting the breeze pass through their room. Just one of the many reasons the hotel was open in the winter and closed in the summer until World War 2, when local coast guardsmen patrolling the beach stayed here. Tryon Died in 1954; his daughters, Mrs. Richard Paxton and Mrs. Dorothy “Do” Miller, and Son-in-law, Richard Paxton, ran the hotel. “Do” Miller enjoyed making Christmas ornaments in room 301 where she lived while running the hotel. She also ran the hotel and restaurant as the primary day to day manager. During the Christmas holidays she was known for hanging Christmas stockings on the outside of guest doors willed with jars of fresh jam and jellies, and dressing the lobby with a Christmas tree, fresh fruit and nuts. However declining hotel occupancy led to its use in the 1970’s as a youth hostel. The building suffered neglect; its unpainted condition earned it the nickname “The Gray Ghost.” Some called for its condemnation while others began a bumper sticker campaign: “Quaint--Not Paint,” Which was countered with “Paint---Don’t Feign.” Finally, fire code violations brought its closing in 1981. John Spang of Winter Park, owner of the Park Plaza Hotel on Park Avenue, was put in charge of renovated the Riverview properties in March 1984. His extensive renovation ---- and addition of a swimming pool and restaurant ---- created a show place with a new lease on life a century later. Jim and Christa Kelsey, former owners of the Faro Blanco Marine Resort in Marathon, Florida, purchased the property in November 1990. The Kelseys ran the hotel with passion, however not before painting the hotel a bright pink giving it a key west feel. In 2003 their daughter Katey opened up New Smyrna Beach’s first “world class spa” The Spa At Riverview Adjacent to the hotel. Christa Kelsey passed away on August 9th, 2010, taking with here a big part of what made the Riverview Hotel so great for so many years. On November 22, 2011 Wayne and Judy Heller, avid fans of the hotel for over 13 years, purchased the property. Looking to make their mark on the hotel began renovations to update the rooms, pool and public areas with a old Victorian feel but with the modern amenities people have come to expect in luxurious hotels. While Wayne and Judy could not be their to run the hotel on a day to day basis, they brought in their son William to stand in as the General Manager. William continues to brings his creative skills to the table to update the decor, technologies and marketing that you see today. So as you can see The Riverview Hotel has been an ever changing establishment since its creation over a 128 years ago. With every new ownership comes new ideas and with every new generations comes higher expectations. Which leads us to where we are today. So when you walk through our hallways and talk to our staff, just remember what you see is the culmination of the passion of over 6 families and 128 years of hospitality. History of New Smyrna Beach
For some 10,000 years before the arrival of the Europeans, Native Americans inhabited the area, initially on a nomadic basis and later in more sedentary camps and villages. Until the early twentieth century, the coastline was strewn with mounds of ancient refuse that testified to the presence of the Indians. Most of the mounds were destroyed, the shell used for roads and building construction material. However, much evidence of prehistoric habitation remains hidden under ground and water within the corporate limits of New Smyrna Beach and beyond. The first European visitation to the New Smyrna Beach area was made during the First Spanish Colonial Period (15651763). Located on the fringe of the primary Spanish settlement at St. Augustine, New Smyrna was visited by missionaries sent to convert the indigenous Indian population to the Catholic faith. Toward the end of that period, the Spanish Crown conceded a number of land grants in the area. Turnbull’s colonial experiment, launched just after the British acquired East Florida in 1764, endured until 1777, when the colonists, plagued by disease and dissention, quit the place and fled to St. Augustine. Their physical legacy remains in the form of stone ruins and subsurface artifacts. Some measure of settlement persisted after the departure of the disaffected colonists, despite the menacing presence of hostile Indians and occasional mercenaries of various stripe. The Spanish reclaimed East Florida from the British in 1784, but encountered difficulty in securing control over the vast and essentially unpopulated land. The United States acquired the colony from Spain in 1819 and established the Territory of Florida in 1821. During the following two decades the New Smyrna area hosted several large plantations, which concentrated primarily on the production of sugar. All gains made toward settlement here, however, were lost during the first year of the Second Seminole War (1835-1842), when many of the plantations were attacked and destroyed by Indian raiding parties. A measure of order was reestablished when the United States Army set up a military base at New Smyrna in 1837, but few settlers returned to the area. Resettlement began in earnest after the Civil War. In 1887, with a population of 150, the Town of New Smyrna was incorporated. The arrival of Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway in 1892 spurred development of the area’s economy, which was based on the tourism, citrus, and commercial fishing industries. The town counted 543 inhabitants at the turn of the century and proceeded to grow fourfold in the next two decades, reaching a population of 2,492 in 1920. The principal areas of business and residential development lay along Canal Street and Faulkner Street Residential development during that period of expansion occurred mainly in the blocks surrounding the intersections of Washington Street and Orange Street and about two blocks inland from the river between Lytle Avenue and Clinch Street. New Smyrna Beach, like most other Florida communities, experienced a period of intensive speculative development during the Florida land boom of the mid-1920s. During the boom a significant collection of buildings was constructed in the area extending from Louise Avenue, eight blocks north of Canal Street, southward to Sixth Street. After the collapse of the land boom in 1926, the State of Florida fell into a protracted economic depression. Development slowed to a virtual halt in New Smyrna Beach during the Great Depression years of the 1930s and did not recover to its boom-time levels until after World War II. There may be about 800 buildings in New Smyrna Beach that remain from the historic period. They include buildings on the mainland, west of the Intracoastal Waterway, and on the peninsula, the former community of Coronado Beach, which was incorporated into the City of New Smyrna Beach in 1947. Few historic buildings in the city date from the late nineteenth century. The majority were constructed between 1900 and 1930. Most of the historic buildings in the city exhibit vernacular designs. Bungalow, Colonial ‘Revival, and Mediterranean Revival were the most common of the high architectural styles applied to residential buildings in New Smyrna Beach during the historic period. Most historic commercial buildings reflect the masonry vernacular designs commonly found throughout the United States in the early twentieth century.

New Smyrna Beach occupies a notable place in history as the site of the largest single attempt at colonial settlement in what is now the United States. Dr. Andrew Turnbull, a Scottish physician and entrepreneur, obtained a grant of land from the British Crown. In 1768 he established a colony of 1225 immigrants on the coastal plantations at New Smyrna, with a view toward the commercial production of such crops as corn, indigo, rice, hemp, and cotton. The land that the Turnbull colonists settled is located along the west bank of the Indian River, opposite one of coastal east Florida’s relatively few inlets.

Tiano’s is the lifelong dream of both Chef Vittorio Tiano and his wife Caterina. Having come to Central Florida on vacation from his hometown of Naples, Vittorio fell in love with the laid back atmosphere, the people, and the community of New Smyrna Beach. He made a monumental and life changing decision to call New Smyrna Beach his home and turned his vacation into a permanent one. It wasn’t long after that Vittorio met Caterina while working in her family’s long standing and successful Italian restaurant Ce La Luna (Edgewater) that they began a whirlwind romance and married. Caterina and Vittorio were both raised in the restaurant industry, and both had goals of one day owning their own establishment. The idea of spending their wedding money to open Tiano’s instead of taking a honeymoon might sound odd for some, but for these two the decision was not only ideal, but the most logical step in their future together. Tiano’s is located on the gorgeous New Smyrna Beach Municipal Golf Course and provides both a healthy dose of family atmosphere and a romantic one. The food will amaze you, and the hard work and dedication of Tiano’s team makes this restaurant one not to miss.

BOTOX and JUVEDERM
Enhance your beauty, inside and out, by indulging in a peaceful transformation with Park Avenue Dentistry. The peaceful sounds of cascading waterfalls will greet you as you enter our elegant office.
BOTOX® is a non surgical treatment that has been FDA approved since 2002 for treatment of frown lines between the eyes and above the nose, called glabellar lines. However, most plastic surgeons, dermatologists and trained dentists who use BOTOX® in cosmetic treatments utilize it for a variety of facial lines and wrinkles, such as forehead lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines, marionette lines, smile lines, smoker’s lines, etc.
Juvéderm™ is a type of injectable filler that was given FDA approval for usage in 2006. Juvéderm™ - It works by suppressing the deep folds and wrinkled lines in the face by injecting hyaluronic acid (the active ingredient in Juvéderm™) into the area to be treated. Juvéderm’s™ primary usage is to erase nasolabial folds, or “smile lines,” which typically appear from the bottom of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. Juvéderm™ can also be used in lip augmentation, or to fill in voids and visible scars on the face.
