THE LIFECYCLE OF A HUON SALMON The lifecycle of a Huon Salmon is two to three years. Our operations are underpinned by a commitment to the highest level of animal husbandry, environmental management and quality.
HATCHERIES Our hatcheries allow the natural lifecycle of salmon to be replicated, as well as allowing growth to be naturally synchronised in a way that enables supply of fresh, healthy fish all year round. Growth is synchronised by using lights to mimic longer daylight hours, and varying the temperature of the water that we hold the eggs and small fish in, while changes in day length prepare the fish for their transfer to sea. Our state-of-the-art Forest Home Hatchery is a second generation recirculation hatchery that delivers outstanding smolt quality and larger smolt sizes with a reduced environmental footprint.
NURSERY We’ve constructed Australia’s first onshore Salmon Nursery at Whale Point in Port Huon. This facility will see smolt grown on land to larger sizes before being transferred to sea. The aim is to reduce the time salmon spend at sea from 14 to less than 12 months. This has several benefits including better management of existing leases, reduced environmental impact, and minimisation of the risk of predation. Whale Point will use world-class recirculation technology that will purify up to 98 per cent of the water used so it can be re-used over and over again. The water that isn’t reused will be disinfected and undergo a nutrient removal process so that it can be used to bathe fish on our well-boat, the Ronja Huon.
MARINE FARMS We farm Huon Salmon and Huon Ocean Trout in some of the roughest waters in the world, where our patented Fortress Pens are designed to withstand swells of 12 metres. Our Fortress Pens minimise interactions with marine life, provide safe and sturdy infrastructure for Huon staff to work on and keep stress to a minimum for our fish. Building on that success, we continue to develop offshore farming capabilities, particularly in Storm Bay, which will be supported by a new second generation well-boat, the Ronja Storm.

THE LIFECYCLE OF A HUON SALMON FEEDING Our continuous advancements in feed systems results in improved fish performance. The upgrade of our pellet recognition software, increased automation of feed delivery systems, and implementation of remote, shorebased feeding capabilities, has been the key to feeding efficiency. Our move to unmanned feed barges enables automated feeding of Huon fish from a central control room in Hobart. Six feeders over two shifts are able to feed Huon’s entire production volume. This is possible due to bespoke Huon developed software that runs over the top of the live video feeds from the pens.
HARVESTING Harvested of a night and to order, we remove Huon Salmon from the water at the last possible minute with just enough time to get them to markets across the country and the world. Testing shows that night time is a less stressful time for fish to be handled due to sensitivities they have for light and vulnerability to predators. This less stressful environment means quality is maintained during harvest, which results in a slower time into and out of rigor. This means better quality salmon with less gaping, firmer flesh and extended shelf-life. Our RSPCA UK awarded, low-stress, humane night harvesting process provides our consumers with fresher, high quality salmon all year-round.
PROCESSING Huon’s reputation for innovation extends beyond the farm. Once our salmon are harvested they are transported to our Smokehouse and Product Innovation Centre at Parramatta Creek. This facility is one of the most advanced in the world with whole fish entering and value added products being dispatched from the same location. Our harvest plan and state-of-the-art equipment housed inside Parramatta Creek means Huon Salmon reaches markets up to 24 hours earlier and fresher than any other salmon.
