Defensible school: Investigating alternative methods of achieving a secure environment in schools
The research looks at the characteristics of safe schools and investigates potential passive security design options to replace the standardised approach implemented to securing school boundaries. The research aims to help architects and designers demonstrate alternative ways to secure schools and assists communities and future generations connect to their surrounding environment. The main focus of the research is to investigate safe school environments which will be responsive and belong to their contexts, users and surrounding conditions. The aim is to work on the aspects that create a safe space and sustainable community. There is no collected data on passive security measures, the objective of this research is to demonstrate to the public that a safe school does not need high fences and research the effect of passive security design in human behaviour. The main outcome is to find alternative solutions to how safety issues are approached in educational environments.
