ONE // pasithea

Pasithea is the greek goddess of relaxation, rest, and any other altered state of conciousness. It is the goal of any bath and spa to create this euphoric sense of feeling for its users. Pasithea addresses the lack of self-care activities and lack of rest within a constantly moving district by creating a disconnect between the larger less intimate urban fabric and the more intimate body and mind. Located in the heart of Dupont Circle, this Urban Bath and Spa creates a seperation between public and private activities utilizing carved out voids within the fabric of the surrounding site.

Much like a cave disorients the senses of the visitor, the entrance to Pasithea does the same. With the slanted wall forcing you into a zone of compression where another set of slanted planes opens up into a large void. The urban response diagram to the left explains how these voids are created while the facade responds with the collision of two non-perpendicular datums.

section perspective

The center atrium space of Pasithea acts as a void to seperate the public from private, bath from spa, and inside from outside. compression / expansion

The four story open height space fills with light from the outside casting shadows on the metal screen that shields bath and spa users from the gaze of the cafe visitors. The end goal of this space is to dissacotiate the user of the spa and bath from the outside world by creating an entirely new, yet calming space inside.

TWO // re-emergence

rebirth perspective

The idea of rebirth is a transition from the uknown to the known and becoming a new person. This rebirth is usually a change in morals, behavior, or social status and is a key part of the rites of initiation. The columns in the pavillion act as a threshold as you cross through the different stages of initiation while when a person passes through the pool it signifies rebirth.

Re-Emergence pavillion is rooted in the idea of rites of passage which consists of three steps. These three steps are seperation, liminality, and incorporation. These three steps are transformed into a procession through spaces that signify each of these steps.

path/space circulation

The Monolith standing tall in front of the pool is a visual alignment tool that can be seen before entering the pavillion. It also serves as a goal that is obtainable but the path there is hidden behind walls and seperated by a pool. Everything hinges around this monolith as the main circulation brings you around it and you arent reintroduced to it until you enter the final space.

From this point you are also able to look back and see where your journey began.
