Dining al fresco is one of summer’s greatest pleasures. Picnic food can be as simple or complex as one wishes to make it - even a quick trip to the local deli counts. Pack a delicious lunch to enjoy after tackling one of the wonderful wildflower hikes on page 12, and you’ve got yourself the perfect afternoon adventure in Lake Tahoe. Here are some of the best tried-and-true picnic spots around the Lake. (*Fees may apply)

PERFECT PICNIC SANDWICH

1 loaf crusty French bread 1/2 c. pesto, homemade or store-bought 1/2 lb. burrata cheese 10 good-sized basil leaves 10 roasted tomato halves 1/4 lb. thinly sliced salami (optional) 8 oz. jarred roasted red peppers, drained

Slice the loaf of bread in half lengthwise. Spread the pesto on the bottom half of the loaf, then spread the burrata on top of the pesto. Arrange the basil leaves down the length of the loaf and put half a roasted tomato on top of each basil leaf. If you are using salami, layer the salami on top of the roasted tomatoes. Add pieces of roasted pepper as the final layer.
