THE
ARMCHAIR ART FAIR
SUMMER 2021
Dear Customers and Friends, Welcome to the summer edition of The Armchair Art Fair! When we launched the first catalogue last November we had little idea that it would be as popular as it proved. So now we are back with a weightier tome, this time with 15 exhibiting art dealers. Putting together the first issue was such a gratifying experience for all of the participants. Not only were we able to reconnect with our regular customers but also found ourselves back in touch with many old friends who had not managed to visit us in recent years simply by living too far away. It was also a chance to catch up with each other – we’re a pretty gossipy bunch, truth be known - and put our professional hats on with gusto for a new project. A much-needed relief from the frustrations of last year. So we owe you all a huge vote of thanks. New to the The Armchair Art Fair are six established and excellent dealers who join nine of the original exhibitors in the first catalogue. You’ll find an extraordinary variety of art works on display, nearly 500 in total, so it will be hard not to find something to tempt you! Enjoy the show and we hope to see you at a fair before too long! Wishing you a very happy summer, John and Felicity Rae-Smith, The Rae-Smith Gallery Organisers Email: raesmithg@aol.com

ALAN DAVIE Alan Davie was a superstar of British art, feted by Pollock, Rothko and Hockney. The enfant terrible of post-war art, the first British artist – probably the first European artist – to embrace ’action painting’, to put himself physically in his pictures. Working stripped to the waist in a kind of Zen trance, Davie painted with a jazz freedom that blew away the cobwebs of the austerity-era art world. A master of colour and composition, painting works of tremendous energy and joy.
ALAN DAVIE GAME OF SQUEEZE THE BALL, 1960 Oil on paper on board. 42cm x 53.5cm. £14,000
ALAN DAVIE WITCHES TABLE, 1961 Oil on paper laid on canvas. 41cm x 53cm. £12,000

BRIDGET RILEY Riley first attracted critical attention with the dazzling black and white paintings she began to make in 1961. These works became celebrated for their energising and disorientating optical effects (for which the term ‘Op Art’ was coined), as well as for their undeniable and surprising beauty. Op Art captured the imagination of the public and became part of the Swinging Sixties. Op Art was cool, and Bridget Riley became Great Britain’s number one art celebrity. She became the first British contemporary painter and the first woman to win the International Prize for painting at the Venice Biennale.

IVON HITCHENS Hitchens was at the forefront of progressive art in the early 20th century along with Ben and Winifred Nicholson, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. While working in a tradition of great landscape painters, he brought a revolutionary style and extraordinary ability to combine what he called “visual music” with colour and space within a very personal horizontal format using wide and expressive brushstrokes. He was also very open to, and inspired by, the greatest continental artists such as Braque, Cezanne and Matisse, especially in the 1930s. He was a member of The London Group whose founder members included Spencer Gore, Wyndham Lewis, Sickert and Epstein who similarly sought to revitalize contemporary visual art, bringing in new European developments in painting and sculpture. Patrick Heron stated that Hitchens closely followed Cézanne in ‘realising his sensations before nature … the only living painter who succeeded in extending the spatial logic of Cubism to the presentation of landscape.’
IVON HITCHENS TABLE TOP, MOON AND FRUIT LADEN TREE, C.1938/40 Oil on canvas. 52cm x 103.5cm. £110,000 A museum quality work by one of England’s greatest and best-loved painters and greatest colourists, an excellent and early example of his double-square format. Reading the painting from left to right, Hitchens presents us with a riot of mellow, but luscious colour and a highly rewarding and intriguing perspective. Possibly a view from Moatlands, we look out from a charming room softened with drapes and other patterned materials and with a staircase to the right. The dark night is pierced by the moon which throws a strong light onto the floor which radiates a terracotta hue. Tall trees and especially one laden with fruit, can be seen together with grass and hills in the background. A painting which will always reward further thought and interpretation and one of his very best interiors.

DAVID HOCKNEY David Hockney is one of the world’s most popular and valuable artists, as resonant today as he was in the 1960s. He is arguably the greatest draughtsman since Picasso. Hockney leads us into a world recognisable, yet intensified, enhanced, made rhythmic and wonderfully alive. He has produced some of the most vividly recognizable and influential works of the twentieth century.

L S LOWRY The nation’s most treasured artist, bringing the nostalgia of industrial Northern life.
L S LOWRY TERRACED HOUSES, CHURCH STEEPLES AND MILLS Pencil on paper. 42cm x 29.5cm. £68,000 A large and superb drawing by Lowry full of close observation and wit, unusually full of all of his most famous subjects including terraced houses, matchstick figures, mill, churches and dogs and cats. Children play with dogs and cats looking on. Young and old walk the streets and one person emerges from their doorway while another appears to go in. Ranks of identical terraced houses rise up from the street and atop all of this hubbub of life, three church spires, a mill and a tall mill chimney.

SIMEON STAFFORD
SIMEON STAFFORD PICCADILLY CIRCUS Oil on canvas. 40” x 60”. £10,000 Simeon Stafford's distinctive style has made him one of the United Kingdom’s most recognised and cherished artists. Stafford was much encouraged personally by Lowry and his masterful brushstrokes and controlled impasto produce works of tremendous joy and wit. His works are collected by H.M. The Queen and Tony Blair, among many other major collectors. Stafford was born in 1956 near Manchester amid the gritty landscape of the industrial north, and while sharing a simple perspective, stylized figures and densely populated scenes with Lowry, his style is very much his own as is his use of colour. Stafford moved to Cornwall in 1996, where his northern roots became fused with the influence of colour and light unique to the lively coastal landscape of the West. Here he met Terry Frost and Patrick Heron whose work had a material influence on him. Characters and the buzz of humanity are central to his works, and many of his paintings feature individuals from his own life and family, including Auntie Dot, and Trixie the family Jack Russell who lived until she was 28. Stafford continues to have successful exhibitions throughout the U.K and has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and at major London and regional galleries.

SIR FRANK BRANGWYN, RA, RWS, RBA, RE (1867-1956) BOAT SHED, SANDWICH Oil on canvas. 30” x 24”. Signed with initials, dated ‘86. £34,000 Sir Frank Brangwyn was a painter, watercolourist, etcher, lithographer and even rarely a potter. Born in Bruges, the son of an architect, he worked initially for William Morris and Co , making copies of Flemish tapestries. Brangwyn travelled extensively in his early years, briefly settled in Sandwich , where he painted the harbour and its folk. In 1885 he showed his first painting at the RA. This oil was painted in 1886 and could be of Sandwich . Brangywn moved on from marines to paint strong figurative and town scenes and travelled extensively around the world. His style changed to a more fluid and colourful depiction. This early work is in a square brush technique, favoured by the Pont Aven and Newlyn schools. Which no doubt Brangwyn would have seen on his travels. Known equally for etchings and lithographs as his oils and watercolours, Brangwyn had a retrospective exhibition at Queen's Gate where one quarter of his total output was shown, in 1924. The exhibition was an enormous success. He was knighted in 1941. There are three museums devoted to Brangwyn, in Bruges, Orange and Walthamstow. There are also Museums around the world who hold his work. This painting has been included in the Catalogue Raisonne of Brangwyn's , no 05304, which is being compiled by Libby Horner.
