The Robert and Celia Morris Collection of Worcester Porcelain Foreword by Celia Morris Like many of the great collections the Robert and Celia Morris Worcester Collection was formed by accident. Robert was born with the collecting gene and at the age of nine, he had befriended the curator of Nottingham Castle Museum, who taught him many things and by the age of eleven, he had amassed a very comprehensive collection of stamps and coins. He bought his first piece of Worcester, Lot 117, however the collection of early Worcester did not really start until he met me, over 20 years ago. We had both been married previously and soon after meeting found love, honour and respect for each other. We were like a rare teapot finding its lost cover, both stubborn, self-willed and fiercely independent, a perfect match. We were happy, contented and at peace with each other and stayed that way until Robert died but our spirits will always be entwined. One fateful day I was decorating the living room, a job I had started several weeks before, these things always take longer than expected, I was just finishing the ceiling when I overbalanced on the steps. Unfortunately I fell on to one of Robert's precious china cabinets. I will never forget the sound of the breaking china, as I heard it, I felt sick, it was a nightmare, I just lay there for a few minutes in utter shock. About ten of these pieces that Robert had treasured for years, were broken into small fragments. I picked up every single piece. All the items apart from one were early Worcester, mainly blue and white, luckily the common printed pieces, but that was not the point, I had smashed them! I told Robert, he said very little and never ever looked at the broken pieces!!.. I vowed then and there I would replace every single piece! Robert was a locksmith and I was a nurse, the shop was always busy and I eventually persuaded Robert to take a short holiday, so we went to The Dyson Perrin Museum. We arrived in the early evening and checked into a lovely hotel in Worcester five minutes walk from the Museum. We walked along the river bank to the Museum and Robert gazed through the window for over an hour, his passion for Worcester forming. The next two days every moment was spent at the museum; we were enthralled with the range of pieces and totally fascinated with history of early porcelain making. Our initial interest turned into a passion for both of us, we were totally hooked and joined the Friends of Worcester Porcelain. Our collecting was never intended to turn into what it is today, every single piece was bought with love for that item and inspired us to learn more and gain knowledge. We were ordinary people with a small not always successful business. If the choice was pay our council tax or supplier or buy an item of Worcester, well Worcester I am afraid won every time! Sometimes we could not afford a Sunday roast, due to our latest purchase however, eggs on toast would go down well, as we examined our latest addition. Space was always an issue in our small flat, and eventually we had fifteen cabinets, bursting at the seams, with many items on the surfaces, each piece adding its own little piece to the history. We loved every single minute from the excitement of bidding, to the waiting for the arrival, in trepidation of opening the packet and the eventual handling and researching the items. 4
Unfortunately Robert became ill in 2012, I never thought I was going to lose him but he lost his battle in November 2014. We did talk about how we would pass on our collection, I use the word pass on deliberately as at the end of the day we are only caretakers of these items of history. We have been privileged to own and handle them for a short time. We want our collection to be sold as individual items, so that everyone no matter what their means might have the chance of owning one of these pieces. Bamfords have been very helpful with this, understanding the aim behind the sale and with preparation of the catalogue. I hope it will be informative and I have included a few of the details that we have learned during our many hours of research, there may be some mistakes, and I apologise for any you may find. I have done the best I can. Many thanks to the people who have supported me along the way, my son and family, our good friend Lawrence, Annabel and James Lewis and the rest of the Bamfords Company, it was a bitter-sweet labour of love and is a piece of our lives. Foreword by Bamfords Auctioneers Bamfords are delighted to be selling the fabulous collection of early Worcester porcelain on behalf of Celia Morris and the late Robert Morris. Worcester was the Morris’s passion, they spent most of their spare time in the pursuit of finding another piece to add to the collection and Celia speaks with utter joy of their delight once a new piece had been found and then the pleasure of spending many hours researching that piece together. They often bought an item of Worcester unsure of how they would pay for it but always found a way, to some it may seem strange to prioritise Worcester over household bills but any collector will know that mentality! Bamfords thank Celia and her family for consigning the collection, which has been an utter pleasure to assist in cataloguing and having spent many hours chatting about the pieces with Celia, understand how difficult the sale is going to be for her, as each piece has a story and is loved. We believe it to be the first sale of this quality to be sold outside London and one of only five sales dedicated to Worcester and we thank Celia for her trust in Bamfords. Celia wished for the collection to be sold individually to allow all Worcester lovers, however deep their pockets, to purchase a piece. This catalogue is dedicated to the memory of Robert Morris

13 A Worcester hexagonal moulded cream boat, of small size, with double scroll handle, the spout with leaf in relief, moulded fancy C-scroll cartouche painted with floral bouquet, floral sprigs to the interior and exterior, 5.4 cm high, c.1752 Vendor’s Note: There is a lot of spit on this item, it shows just how difficult it was to correctly fire a piece at this time, and the fact they decorated it, shows how rare complete pieces were: they could not afford to make it a waster so they decorated over the spit. Ref: Similar cream boats can be seen in the Crane Collection, Bonhams, 2010, Lots 30, 31 and 32.

Vendor’s Note: Primitive seems to be the initial phase of onglaze printing at Worcester from 1753-55, then a brief Transitional Period from 1755-56, culminating in the influences of the Rococo, 1756-68 and the Neo-Classical 176874. It can be extremely difficult to differentiate between the Smokey Primitive and the Transitional Period. Hence my heading at the top of this piece. Personally, Robert and I think these are Smokies.

29 A rare Worcester Two Geese pattern slightly flared thinly potted tea bowl, enamelled in famille rose with two geese beside an elaborate flowering peony plant, printed black outline, c.1756 Provenance: The Weiss Collection. Vendor’s Note: A similar pattern in the Billie Pain Collection and the Zorensky Collection, Bonhams. The Two Geese Pattern derives from Chinese porcelain of the Yongzheng period. It utilises the same technique as the more popular Red Bull pattern.

34 A Worcester Hibiscus pattern pear shaped dry mustard pot, well painted with a large honeysuckle flower, trailing vines and sprigs, with birds and insects flying above, 8cm high, c.1753-55 Provenance: The Grant Davidson Collection; The Weiss Collection. Vendor’s Note: Mr W. J. Grant-Davidson (1912-1999) was an avid collector of pottery and porcelain of all factories, he started collecting in 1938. He was considered an eccentric and as well as a collector he was also a keen astronomer and archaeologist. His collection of 800 lots was sold by Sothebys in 1999, and his sale catalogue comprised of 100 pages. The original catalogue was given to The National Museum of Wales.

100 A rare Worcester reticulated plate, painted in the workshops of James Giles, with scattered sprigs of flowers in two tones of green, outlined in black, the inner border decorated with chain and spot gilded flowers, the scalloped rim finely pierced with hearts and crescents, 22cm diam, c.1770 Vendor’s Note: The reticulation technique was clearly introduced to Worcester porcelain by craftsman from Staffordshire and Yorkshire trained in the manufacture of cream ware. Worcester was the only porcelain maker to attempt this distinctive and ornate pierced decoration. The process would have been expensive, volatile and difficult, therefore very few pieces seem to have been made.

It is not known which was actually the service for Lady Mary Wortley Montagu hence the type in the heading. The famous bluestocking died in 1762. It is thought the association with her is through ownership of the service by her descendants.The 1774 sale catalogue of Giles stock included on the 4th day, 24th March, 1774, “Lot 64 a dessert service of the fine mazareen blue enrich’d with chased and burnished gold, painted with birds and flowers”.

Binns, the origin of the pattern and style name comes from John Thorneloe, one of the original partners in the Worcester Porcelain Company, who went to Mullion, Cornwall, searching for soapstone. Upon finding no available lodgings, he was invited to stay by a local gentleman, Renatus Kempthorne, who, as a gentleman, would accept no payment for his hospitality. On returning to Worcester, Thorneloe, is said to have commissioned a special service which he sent to Kempthorne using the soapstone he had procured in Cornwall. A nice story, probably based on some facts.

Robert Hancock, the talented engraver, initially worked at the Battersea enamel works of the equally talented engraver John Brooks. It was Brooks himself who is accredited with inventing the new procedure to use engraved copper plates. Hancock moved from Battersea to Worcester, and from enamels to porcelain, in 1756/57 – when Worcester first introduced transfer printing on their wares. He was a partner of the Worcester factory for about three years until being bought out by the other shareholders. In all, Hancock served the company from 1756 to 1774. 148

Conditions of Sale Definitions In these Conditions Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited act only as auctioneers and agents for the seller and the representative of Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited conducting the auction is called the 'Auctioneer'. General Whilst Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited make every effort to ensure the accuracy of their catalogue and the description of any lot:(a) Each lot as set out in the catalogue or as divided or combined with any other lot or lots sold by the seller with all faults, imperfections and errors of description. (b) Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited do not accept responsibility for the authenticity, attribution, genuineness, origin, authorship, date, age, period, condition or quality of any lot unless they have been instructed in writing by the seller to so cer tify, and in such case the auctioneers do so as agents of the seller and are not themselves responsible for such claims. (c) All statements whether printed in the catalogue or made orally as to any of the matters set out above are statements of opinion only and are not to be taken as being or implying any warranties or representations of fact by Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited unless they have been instructed in writing by the seller to so certify. (d) The Auctioneers must receive any claim under any Statute in writing within ten days of the day of the sale. condition as at the time of sale and by producing evidence, the burden of proof to be upon the buyer, satisfies Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited that considered in the light of the entry in the catalogue the lot is a deliberate forgery then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price of the same refunded. The seller and the buyer agree to be bound by Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited’s decision. Default Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited disclaim responsibility for default by either the buyer or the seller as they act, as agents for the seller only and therefore do not pay out to the seller until payment is received from the buyer. Conditions of Sale Applicable to Buyers Inspection Opportunity is given for inspection and each buyer by making a bid for a lot acknowledges that he has satisfied himself fully before bidding by inspection or otherwise to all the Sale Conditions, the physical condition of and description of the lot including but not restricted to whether the lot is damaged or has been repaired or restored. Property and Risk The legal title in a lot shall not pass to the buyer until the lot(s) has been paid for in full and the Auctioneers shall be entitled to a lien on any lot sold until the purchase price is paid in full but each lot is at the sole risk of the buyer from the fall of the hammer. Every bidder shall be deemed to act as principal unless there is in force a written acknowledgement by Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited that they act as agents on behalf of a named principal.
Removal of Goods (a) No purchase shall be claimed or removed until the sale has been concluded. All lots shall be paid for and removed at the buyer’s risk and expense by the end of the tenth working day after the Fine Art and Antiques sale and two working days for all other sales, failing which the Auctioneer shall not be responsible if the same are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed, and all lots not so removed shall remain at the risk of the buyer and subject to a storage charge. If they are not paid for and removed within the above mentioned terms of the sale, the Auctioneer may re-sell them by auction or privately without notice to the buyer. Any liability, which there may be on the part of the Auctioneer in respect of any loss, shall be restricted to a maximum of the price paid by the buyer of the lot. (b) In the event of any failure of the buyer to comply with any of the above conditions the damages recoverable by the seller or the Auctioneers from the defaulter shall include any loss arising on any re-sale of the lots, together with the charges and expenses in respect of both sales, together with interest at 2% above HSBC plc base rate upon the price of any lot which has not been paid for within forty-eight hours of the sale, and any money deposited in part payment shall be held by the Auctioneers on account of any liability of the defaulter to them or to the seller. The Auctioneers are unable to accept payment from successful bidders other than in cash or by the bidders own cheque. Cheques drawn by third par ties, whether in the Auctioneer’s favour or requiring endorsement cannot be accepted. Purchase Price The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium at the stated rates on the hammer price together with a premium at the stated rates on the hammer price (adjusted for VAT as necessary). The premium at the appropriate rate is payable by all purchasers. The amount invoiced in respect of the premium will be inclusive of VAT but this VAT will not normally be recoverable by the buyer. The vendor authorises the Auctioneer’s to deduct commission and expenses at the stated rates from the hammer price and acknowledges the Auctioneer’s right to retain the premium payable by the purchaser. Commission to Bid Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited will execute bids on behalf of intending buyers unable to attend the sale at no charge. Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited under take to purchase lots as cheaply as allowed by other bids and reserves. Bids must be submitted in writing and whilst every care is taken in carrying out instructions Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited cannot be held responsible for errors or omissions made in carrying out such bids. Lots on which Value Added Tax is payable on or included in the hammer price are indicated in the catalogue or description sheet with a sign. VAT is payable on or included in the hammer price of such lots at the rates prevailing on the day of the auction.
Droit de Suite is a royalty payable to a qualifying artist or the artist’s heirs each time a work is re-sold during the ar tist’s lifetime and during the 70 years following the ar tist’s death. Taking effect in the UK on 14 February 2006, it will initially only apply to the work of living artists. In 2010 (or 2012 depending on whether or not the UK government take advatage of a possible derogation), Droit de Suite will be extended to apply to an artist’s works for a period of 70 years after his death. Royalties will be calculated using a sliding scale of percentages of the sale price, net of tax, For auction companies, the sale price is the hammer price (i.e., the price without the premium). However, the total amount of royalty on any one sale or lot shall not exceed €12,500. Resale royalties are not subject to VAT. Resale royalty does not apply when the hammer price is less than €1,000. Each time you bid on a lot covered by ARRR, you agree to pay an amount equal to the resale royalty, if you are the successful bidder. This amount will be added to your invoice. Online Bidding Bamfods Auctioneers and Valuers offer an online bidding service via the-saleroom.com and ukauctioneers for bidders who cannot attend the sale. In completing the bidder registration on www.thesaleroom.com and providing your credit card details and unless alternative arrangements are agreed with Bamfords you: 1. Authorise Bamfords, if they so wish, to charge the debit/credit card given in par t or full payment, including all fees, for items successfully purchased in the auction via the-saleroom.com 2. Confirm that you are authorised to provide these credit card details to Bamfords through www.thesaleroom.com. Please note that any lots purchased via the-saleroom.com live auction service will be subject to an additional 3% commission charge + VAT at the rate imposed on the hammer price Ukauctioneers do not charge the 3% fee but a one off charge of £2.95
Conditions of Sale Applicable to Sellers Terms Standard selling commission is 12.5% (14.37% inc. VAT) of the hammer price of each lot. The minimum charge whether sold or unsold is £3 per lot (non catalogued sales) and £10 per lot (catalogue sales). The withdrawal fee for a lot which has been catalogued is 20% of the reserve price or the auctioneer’s lower estimate of the auction value, subject to the minimum charge of £25 per lot on catalogued sales. Insurance is charged at 2.5% of the hammer price of each lot sold (subject to a minimum charge of £1). VAT is payable on minimum charges, withdrawal fee and insurance. Buyers pay a premium of 21% excluding the VAT on the hammer price of each lot purchased, HOWEVER THIS PREMIUM WILL BE REDUCED TO 19.5% IF THE TOTAL INVOICE OF PAYMENT IS MADE WITHIN FIVE WORKING DAYS OF THE SALE DATE.

The Seller authorises Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited to deduct commission at the published rate and to retain the buyer’s premium of 21% plus VAT. The seller agrees to pay all special adver tising charges and illustration charges insomuch that they are reasonable. Value Added Tax A seller who sends for sale by auction any chatel(s) which is an asset of his business must disclose to the Auctioneer whether or not he is a registered person for Value Added Tax purposes and, if so, his registered number and whether or not he intends to operate the Dealers Margin Scheme covering works of art, etc. This information must be supplied to the Auctioneer on or prior to delivery of goods. Instructions All goods delivered to the Auctioneer’s premises will be deemed to be delivered for Sale by Auction and will be catalogued and sold accordingly unless special instructions are recorded on the receipt. Reserves Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited will be pleased to advise on suitable protective reserves but if no reserve have been received prior to the day of sale, the lot will be sold without reserve or at the discretion of the Auctioneer. Reserves must be confirmed in writing or notified on the receipt at the time of delivery. Indemnity Vendors shall indemnify Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited against any claims in connection with goods sold by Bamfords on the vendors behalf. Collections The Auctioneer’s do not themselves under take the collection of goods but acting expressly as Agents, they will if required, instruct or recommend a carrier on the vendor’s behalf. Withdrawals Where a seller cancels instructions for sale, or where a lot is withdrawn for any reason other than misattribution or authenticity, Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited reserve the right to charge a fee equal to 10% plus VAT of the reserve price of the lot, or where no reserve has been fixed, Bamford’s lower estimate of the item(s) withdrawn, together with any expenses incurred in relation with the item(s) withdrawn. Insurance Unless instructed otherwise (in which case the proper ty remains at the Owners risk) goods will be insured against all risks whilst on the premises pending sale. The premium cost will be 3% of the hammer price. The Auctioneer shall not be responsible for damage to, or the loss, theft or destruction of any goods not so insured. If the vendor has in force policy or policies of Insurance in which the ar ticle is specifically mentioned as being insured (whetheror not for an agreed sum of value) the vendor shall notify his Insurers of, and shall himself note the Auctioneers’ Interest as Bailees in such policy or policies.

Warranty of Title The seller warrants to Bamfords Auctioneers and Valuers Limited and to the buyer that he is the true owner of the property or is properly authorised to sell the property by the true owner and is able to transfer good and marketable title to the proper ty free from any third party claims. Rights to Photographs and Illustrations The vendor gives Bamfords Auctioneers & Valuers Limited full and absolute right to photograph and illustrate any lots placed in its hands for sale and to use such photographs and illustrations and any photographs provided by the vendor at any time at its absolute discretion, whether or not in the connection with the auction. Bamfords Auctioneers & Valuers Limited will reserve the right to make a discretionary charge for any photographs used in the catalogue which will promote the items sale. Electrical and Mechanical Goods The seller or consignor of electrical or mechanical goods warrants and under takes to Bamfords Auctioneers & Valuers Limited that at the date on which the same are consigned to Bamfords or put under Bamfords' control and excepted as previously disclosed to Bamfords the same are safe if reasonably used for the purpose for which they were designed and free from any defect not obviously on external inspection which could prove dangerous to human life or health and will indemnify Bamfords Auctioneers & Valuers Limited, its servants and agents against loss or damage suffered by any of them in consequence of any breach of the above warranty and under taking. Bamfords Auctioneers & Valuers Limited reserve the right to make a minimum charge of £2.50 per item to have the goods checked by an electrician for the safety of the item. Agency The Auctioneers act throughout as Agents only and are not responsible for any default by the buyer. Bamfords Auctioneers & Valuers Limited disclaim liability for paying the vendor until they have received settlement from the purchaser. Unsaleable Goods Unless otherwise instructed by accompanying or previously received written notice, all goods delivered to their premises which in Bamfords Auctioneers & Valuers Limited opinion have no saleable value will be disposed of at Bamfords discretion either to a charity or by consignment for destruction. Payment Payment is due immediately after the sale in pounds sterling and may be made by the following methods: cash, bankers draft, and debit card. VISA AND MASTERCARDS have a 2.5% surcharge. We do not accept American Express. Credit card payments are not accepted over the telephone.
