Sir James Pennethorne (1801-1871) was an architect and planner, particularly associated with buildings and parks in Central London. He was born in Worcester and moved to London to study architecture, first under August Pugin and then John Nash. In 1824 he set off on a tour of France, Italy and Sicily, studying Antiquities. On his return in 1826 he entered the office of John Nash and as his principal assistant directed the West Strand, King William Street and other important improvements completing the Park Village East and West in Regent’s Park after Nash’s death. In 1832 he was directly employed by the Commissioners of Her Majesty’s Woods to prepare plans for further improvements to the capital. One of his aims was to form a great street running from the extreme east to extreme west of London but this proved to be too great for the government. Between 1852 and 1856 he completed the west wing of William Chambers’ Somerset House. Pennethorne was knighted in recognition of his public services, in November 1870.

Kinkead, a member of the RAF High Speed Flight, had been killed attempting the same record in March that year and Greig became an official member at Calshot in February 1929 as a result of Kinkead’s death. The 1929 Schneider Trophy contest was held on 7 September at Cowes, the race course started and finished at Ryde Pier, and was thirty-one miles long on each lap, consisting of a four-sided ‘kite’ pattern. The British team consisted of Squadron Leader A.H. Orlebar as its flight commander, with Flight Lieutenant Stainforth, Flight Lieutenant D’Arcy Greig, and Flying Officers R.L.R. Atcherley and H.R.D. Waghorn as competing pilots. The aircraft consisted of two Supermarine S6 Seaplanes, N247 and N248 flown by Waghorn and Atcherley, Greig was allocated a Supermarine S5 N219. Only Italy had sent a team for this particular race, the weather was perfect on the day of the race, Waghorn had the first attempt reaching speeds of 328.63mph and won the race, Greig 282.11mph and Atcherley disqualified, the two Italian aircraft were forced to retire leaving a M52R coming 2nd (284.2mph). It is estimated that 1.5 million people watched the race from both shore sides of the Solent and also on a flotilla. Greig continued his service with the RAF until 1946 retiring as an Air Commodore, he passed away on 7 July 1986, his ashes scattered across the Solent, a fitting tribute to a Schneider Trophy legend. 686* Schneider Trophy. AIR COMMODORE HERBERT GEORGE BRACKLEY CBE, DSO, DSC, FRGS, FRAes Ordre de la Couronne Belgique, Croix de Guerre 1894-1948 Herbert George Brackley enlisted in the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) in April 1915 and gained his Royal Aero Club Certificate No 1474 on 27 July 1915. As Flight Lieutenant Brackley he was a flight commander on No. 7 Squadron RNAS when the Squadron formed in November 1916, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in May 1917 and appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order in June 1917, both awards for his exploits as a night bomber pilot. When No 7A Squadron finally became independent of No 7 Squadron in December 1917 and was renumbered as No 14 Squadron RNAS, Acting Squadron Commander Brackley was appointed its first commanding officer. On the formation of the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918, the Squadron became No 214 Squadron Royal Air Force, with Major H.G Brackley as commanding officer. Known to friends and colleagues as ‘Brackles’, he left the RAF after the end of the war and commenced a career in civil aviation as Chief of the Air Department of Handley Page Transport. He went to Newfoundland with a Handley Page V/1500 in order to attempt the trans-Atlantic crossing but was beaten in the attempt by Alcock & Brown and so flew the other way and completed the first flight from Newfoundland to New York accompanied by Admiral Mark Kerr and Major Tryggve Gran who acted as navigator. In 1921 Brackley joined Lord Sempill’s British Aviation Mission to Japan as Air Advisor to The Japanese Naval Air Service. The group of paperwork in the archive relating to this period includes a five page typescript document relating to the Aerial Escort for H.R.H. the Prince of Wales’s visit in April 1922, setting out the schedule, the aircraft to be used and the names of the pilots, there are numerous documents relating to technical matters, including the care and maintenance of F5’s, notes on Seal & Viking tests, letters from Fairy Aviation Co. Ltd. and D. Napier & Son Ltd. concerning the supply of seaplanes and engines, etc., notes on Salvus parachutes, arrangements for an oversea flight to Ogasawara in F5’s, a report on deck landing trials on ‘Hosho’, a sequence of correspondence relating to Mitsuibishi deck torpedo carrier and Mitsuibishi triplane (which would seem to show direct links with the events that took place eighteen years later at Pearl Harbour, using the training and tactics developed by the British Aviation Mission). It was in Japan that he met his wife, Frida, who was on a world cruise. She was the daughter of Sir Robert and Lady Edith Mond. Sir Robert Mond (1867-1938) was later Chairman of the family business, Brunner Mond & Co. and in 1926 the company merged with others to form ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries). Brackles and Frida were married in London on 27 September 1922 but went back to live in Japan. Returning to Britain in 1924, Brackley joined the newly formed Imperial Airways as their Air Superintendent but he remained in the Reserve Air Force Officers in the rank of Flying Officer, being promoted to Flight Lieutenant in 1925 and Squadron Leader in 1927. His task with Imperial Airways was to plan operations and organise training as well as carry out route development. He flew the first scheduled flight in the new Armstrong Whitworth Argosy from Paris to London on 5th August 1926 and he personally surveyed the route taken by the new four-engined flying boats between England and Australia. The documents in the archive relating to this period include many Imperial Airways cables and memoranda as well as an interesting five-page document (marked Confidential) entitled ‘Imperial Airways Limited Empire Air Mail Scheme. Record of Survey Flight, Singapore-DarwinSydney-Singapore, of Royal Air Force Singapore III Flying Boat, 6th May – 18th June, 1936’, compiled by Major H.G. Brackley. Recalled to full time service with the RAF in 1939, he was initially assigned to Coastal Command where his experience with flying boats and trans-Atlantic flights proved useful and in 1943 he was appointed to the post of SASO in the newly created Transport Command. At the end of the war he relinquished his commission and continued his civil aviation career, initially with British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) and later as Chief Executive of British South American Airways Corporation (BSAA). Amongst his post-war achievements was the successful evacuation of over 35,000 government officials and families, evacuees and destitutes between India, Pakistan and Baluchistan. Brackley sadly lost his life in a swimming accident in Rio de Janeiro on 15th November 1948.

Comdr Brackley, Observer Sub. Bewsher, R.N., G/L. A.M.2 Wardrop) carrying 4/250lb. and 8/65lb. bombs left for Namur with instructions to bomb the Railway Bridge. The night was extremely fine and visibility exceptionally good throughout the raid. The objective was reached without difficulty and the first attack was made from a height of 4,700ft. at 22.25 B.S.T., a line being taken S. to N. 6 bombs were dropped, but fell slightly to the westward of the bridge, a second run at 4,400ft. on the same course resulted in two direct hits (with 250lb. bombs) on the bridge near its northern extremity. The explosion of these bombs was clearly observed by pilot, observer and gunlayer. The bridge itself being immediately afterwards obscured by smoke. The flight which was undertaken at 2 hrs.’ notice was carefully conducted, the attack itself being carried out with skill and precision.” (BM p19). Brackles’ own log reads: “Most enjoyable trip. Found Namur easily. Made first run from S. to N. at 4,700 ft. and Bewsher dropped 6 bombs. All missed - damn! Second run same direction at 4,400 ft. and 2 of the 250lb. hit bridge near northern extremity. Great explosions! Think we badly dented bridge. Had an excellent trip back.” There is a note in the back of the logbook that: “Agent confirms our report and says that bridge was badly damaged and that 3 sets of rails out of 6 were destroyed”. Brackley’s friend and Observer Sub-Lieutenant Bewsher, R.N., later Captain Paul Bewsher, D.S.C., R.A.F., immortalised the Railway Bridge raid at Namur (29.9.1917) in his poem ‘A Night Hymn’ written in the air whilst returning from the raid which was 60 miles behind enemy lines. “Above the hostile lands I fly, and know, O Lord, that Thou art nigh; and with Thy ever-loving care, Dost bear me safely through the air. Thou madest the twinkling Polar star, which guides me homewards from afar; and Thou hast made my greatest boon, The radiant visage of the Moon, and if I did not love Thee, Lord, I could not sit here reassured, with level mind, and soul at ease, amidst the cool refreshing breeze” (BM p18/19). The new science of aviation was now taking a new slant away from the destruction of the Great War to an age of pioneers and development. Brackley seized the opportunity for this innovative period. In 1919 The Handley Page V/1500 aircraft ‘Atlantic’ was shipped in multiple crates from Liverpool to Newfoundland, in a bid to attempt the first nonstop Transatlantic flight. The team comprised Major Brackley, Admiral Mark Kerr, and the other pilot, Major Gran, R.A.F., the well-known Antarctic explorer, who was to act as navigator (BM p40). Unfortunately the prize was won by Alcock and Brown in a Vickers Vimy in June 1919. The crew of Atlantic headed for New York but on 5th July 1919 problems developed with the starboard engine which eventually brought the aircraft down in a field in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia. Repairs to the Atlantic took most of the, on 9th October 1919 the crew reached New York. The Atlantic stood as a constant obstacle to aviation pioneers and in times of peace all their efforts were concentrated on achieving this ultimate goal. On the 14th June 1919 Captain John Alcock, D.S.C. and his navigator Lieutenant Arthur W. Brown were the first to cross the Atlantic (much to the disappointment of Brackley and his crew). They flew the “VickersVimy Rolls” a modified Great War Vickers Vimy bomber from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Clifden, Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. 744* BAC - Sud Aviation Concorde. Airborne Weather Radar System, manufactured by EKCO Avionics as used on the Concorde prototype, with stores reference plate serial no. 66 267 00600, 15cm high x 15cm wide x 38cm deep By 1966 EKCO had embarked on what was to prove their last major civil development, the E390 system, being specifically designed to meet the challenge of producing weather radar for Concorde. The unique Concorde operational requirement meant that EKCO had to overcome many new problems. Of the notable challenges, one of which was that the radar signal being emitted and returned had to electronically compensated whenever the droop snoot visor was operated since the refraction angle changed. The second problem was that due to the heat within the nose, conventional soft solder could not be used for soldering connections etc, therefore a high temperature solder had to be developed. With the speed of Concorde, the conventional maximum range of 180 miles was deemed inadequate and therefore a special ‘pencil beam’ with a 360 mile also had to developed. Whille EKCO had always ensured duplication within its equipment, Concorde took this to new extremes whereby there were completely separate operating systems, literally everything was duplicated. CONDITIONS OF SALE AND BUSINESS 1. The Seller warrants to the Auctioneer and the buyer that he is the true owner or is properly authorised to sell the property by the true owner and is able to transfer good and marketable title to the property free from any third party claims. 2. (a) The highest bidder to be the buyer. If during the auction the Auctioneer considers that a dispute has arisen he has absolute authority to settle it or re-offer the lot. The Auctioneer may at his sole discretion determine the advance of bidding or refuse a bid, divide any lot, combine any two or more lots or withdraw any lot without prior notice. (b) Where goods are bought at auction by a buyer who has entered into an agreement with another or others that the other or others (or some of them) shall abstain from bidding for the goods and the buyer or other party or one of the other parties is a dealer (as defined in the Auction Biddings Agreement Act 1927) the buyer warrants that the goods are bought bona fide on joint account. 3. The buyer shall pay the price at which a lot is knocked down by the Auctioneer to the buyer (“the hammer price”) together with a premium of 19.5% of the hammer price. Where the lot is marked by an asterisk the premium will be subject to VAT at 23.40% which under the Auctioneer’s Margin Scheme will form part of the buyer’s premium on our invoice and will not be separately identified (the premium added to the hammer price will hereafter collectively be referred to as “the total sum due”). By making any bid the buyer acknowledges that his attention has been drawn to the fact that on the sale of any lot the Auctioneer will receive from the seller commission at its usual rates in addition to the said premium of 19.5% and assents to the Auctioneer receiving the said commission. 4. (a) The buyer shall forthwith upon the purchase give in his name and permanent address and pay to the Auctioneer immediately after the conclusion of the auction the total sum due. (b) The buyer may be required to pay down during the course of the sale the whole or any part of the total sum due, and if he fails to do so after such request the lot or lots may at the Auctioneer's absolute discretion be put up again and resold immediately. (c) The buyer shall at his own expense take away any lot or lots purchased no later than five working days after the auction day. (d) The Auctioneer may at his own discretion agree credit terms with a buyer and extend the time limits for collection in special cases but otherwise payment shall be deemed to have been made only after the Auctioneer has received cash or a sterling banker’s draft or the buyer's cheque has been cleared. 5. (a) If the buyer fails to pay for or take away any lot or lots pursuant to clause 4 or breaches any other condition of that clause the Auctioneer as agent for the seller shall be entitled after consultation with the seller to exercise one or other of the following rights: (i) Rescind the sale of that or any other lots sold to the buyer who defaults and re-sell the lot or lots whereupon the defaulting buyer shall pay to the Auctioneer any shortfall between the proceeds of that sale after deduction of costs of re-sale and the total sum due. Any surplus shall belong to the seller. (ii) Proceed for damages for breach of contract. (b) Without prejudice to the Auctioneer's rights hereunder if any lots or lots are not collected within five days or such longer period as the Auctioneer may have agreed otherwise, the Auctioneer may charge the buyer a storage charge of £1.00 + VAT at the current rate per lot per day. (c) Ownership of the lot purchased shall not pass to the buyer until he has paid to the Auctioneer the total sum due. 6. (a) The seller shall be entitled to place a reserve on any lot and the Auctioneer shall have the right to bid on behalf of the seller for any lot on which a reserve has been placed. A seller may not bid on any lot on which a reserve has been placed. (b) Where any lot fails to sell, the Auctioneer shall notify the seller accordingly. The seller shall make arrangements either to re-offer the lot for sale or to collect the lot and may be asked to pay a commission not exceeding 50% of the selling commission and any special expenses incurred in cataloguing the lot. (c) If such arrangements are not made within seven days of the notification the Auctioneer is empowered to sell the lot by auction or by private treaty at not less than the reserve price and to receive from the seller the normal selling commission and special expenses.
7. Any representation or statement by the Auctioneer in any catalogue, brochure or advertisement of forthcoming sales as to authorship, attribution, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance, condition or estimated selling price is a statement of opinion only. Every person interested should exercise and rely on his own judgement as to such matters and neither the Auctioneer nor his servants or agents are responsible for the correctness of such opinions. No warranty whatsoever is given by the Auctioneer or the seller in respect of any lot and any express or implied warranties are hereby excluded. 8. (a) Notwithstanding any other terms of these conditions, if within fourteen days of the sale the Auctioneer has received from the buyer of any lot notice in writing that in his view the lot is a deliberate forgery and within fourteen days after such notification the buyer returns the same to the Auctioneer in the same condition as at the time of the sale and satisfies the Auctioneer that considered in the light of the entry in the catalogue the lot is a deliberate forgery then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price of the same refunded. "A deliberate forgery" means a lot made with intention to deceive. (b) A buyer's claim under this condition shall be limited to any amount paid to the Auctioneer for the lot and for the purpose of this condition the buyer shall be the person to whom the original invoice was made out by the Auctioneer. 9. Lots may be removed during the sale after full settlement in accordance with 4(d) hereof. 10. All goods delivered to the Auctioneer's premises will be deemed to be delivered for sale by auction unless otherwise stated in writing and will be catalogued and sold at the Auctioneer's discretion and accepted by the Auctioneer subject to all these conditions. In the case of miscellaneous books, the Auctioneer reserves the right to extract and dispose of books that, in the opinion of the Auctioneer at his absolute discretion, have no saleable value and, therefore, might detract from the saleability of the rest of the lot and the Auctioneer shall incur no liability to the seller, in respect of the books disposed of. By delivering the goods to theAuctioneer for inclusion in his auction sales each seller acknowledges that he/she accepts and agrees to all the conditions. 11. (a) Unless otherwise instructed in writing all goods on the Auctioneer's premises and in their custody will be held insured against the risks of fire, burglary, water damage and accidental breakage or damage. The value of the goods so covered will be the hammer price, or in the case of unsold lots the lower estimate, or in the case of loss or damage prior to the sale that which the specialised staff of the Auctioneer shall in their absolute discretion estimate to be the auction value of such goods. (b) The Auctioneer shall not be responsible for damage to or the loss, theft, or destruction of any goods not so insured because of the owner’s written instructions. 12. The Auctioneer shall remit the proceeds of the sale to the seller thirty days after the day of the auction provided that the Auctioneer has received the total sum due from the buyer. In all other cases the Auctioneer will remit the proceeds of the sale to the seller within seven days of the receipt by the Auctioneer of the total sum due. The Auctioneer will not be deemed to have received the total sum due until after any cheque delivered by the buyer has been cleared. In the event of the Auctioneer exercising his right to rescind the sale his obligation to the seller hereunder lapses. 13. In the case of the seller withdrawing instructions to the Auctioneer to sell any lot or lots, the Auctioneer may charge a fee of 12.5% of the Auctioneer's middle estimate of the auction price of the lot withdrawn together with Value Added Tax thereon and any expenses incurred in respect of the lot or lots. 14. The Auctioneer’s current standard notices and information (i.e. Collation and Amendments) will apply to any contract with the Auctioneer as if incorporated herein. 15. These conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with English Law.
