Gala Auction Dinner 2014 in support of the Restoration and Renewal Appeal
Tuesday 21st October
Foreword
I cannot express enough my gratitude to you for joining us at the inaugural Fulham Palace Gala Auction Dinner. My wife, Christine, and I have a longstanding connection with Fulham Palace, and I have watched with passionate interest over the last few years as the buildings and gardens have been brought back to life. Now, as Chairman, I feel honoured to lead the Palace into the next exciting phase in its 1300-year history. We have an ambitious vision for this site, and we are determined to see it realised. Fulham Palace is the only museum, Grade I listed building and Grade II * listed garden in what is now London’s most densely populated and diverse Borough. We are also the only significant landscape along the Thames that is yet to be restored. All of this, of course, would be meaningless if it was only preserved for its own sake. However, everything we do at Fulham Palace is for the benefit of our visitors, for the 250,000 of you who use the site every year. The true value of heritage lies in its educational merit, in what can be derived and learned from the past, and in how it informs our present. We want therefore to restore these wonderful buildings and gardens for you, and for the generations that will follow so that the thousands of years of history which Fulham Palace encapsulates can continue to be discovered, shared and enjoyed. We cannot achieve this alone and I urge you, therefore, to be benevolent this evening: the prizes on offer certainly need no introduction from me! But I ask you to spend generously tonight to ensure the survival and renewal of Fulham Palace, the country house on the banks of the Thames. Thank you.
Tim Ingram
Chairman
Gala Auction Dinner 2014 in support of the Restoration and Renewal Appeal
Tuesday 21st October 2014 Fulham Palace Bishop’s Avenue, Fulham, London SW6 6EA from 7pm till late Black tie
Registered charity number 1140088
About Fulham Palace Fulham Palace is one of the earliest historic powerhouses situated alongside the River Thames. Its origins date back to 704 and, for over thirteen centuries, it was the residence of the Bishops of London. Protagonists at the forefront of the social, ecclesiastical, economic and political affairs of the nation, the stories of the individual Bishops offer personal insights into such major events as the Viking incursions, the political instability of the Reformation, the colonisation of North America and the crusade against slavery. Whilst the standing buildings are Tudor, Georgian and Victorian in date, they are located within a site rich in buried archaeological remains dating from the Neolithic, Iron Age and Roman periods. The Palace grounds are also of considerable botanical and horticultural importance as during the 16th and 17th centuries they became home to many new plant species introduced from overseas, the result of ecclesiastical links with India, Africa, the West Indies and North America. During the medieval period, the estate was enclosed by the longest domestic moat in England, measuring nearly a mile in length. The last Bishop in residence left the Palace in 1974, leaving it to be cared for by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, which subsequently handed over stewardship and full responsibility to Fulham Palace Trust (registered charity no. 1140088) in April 2011. Charged with safeguarding Fulham Palace for the residents of the Borough and for the nation at large, our overarching vision is to engage people and to provide an insight, through the stories of the Bishops of London, into over 1300 years of English history, and to become one of Great Britain’s most cherished historic houses and gardens. We provide a diverse programme of events and activities for a variety of user groups, and are carving out a niche as one of London’s most active heritage sites for formal and informal learning and community involvement.
2
The Restoration and Renewal Appeal Our vision for Fulham Palace is simple. We want to complete the site-wide restoration project begun by Hammersmith and Fulham Council in 2005, the culmination of which has the potential to elevate Fulham Palace to the status of one of London’s principal heritage attractions. In doing so there are clear opportunities for improving access, for opening up more of the site for the delight of local residents and visitors from further afield. It will enable us to harness the as yet unfulfilled potential of previous restoration work, delivering a top quality attraction with innovative interpretation, events and workshops, to become a first-class community resource. In 2005-6 and 2010-12 two significant phases of restoration work were undertaken at Fulham Palace. These included renovations and remedial work to the Georgian wing (2005-6), and to garden buildings such as the stable block and the vinery (2010-12). Alongside these capital works, extensive archaeological investigation also took place.
3
We are now fundraising for a third and final phase of the restoration project. This will draw together and build upon the two preceding phases, providing a fitting conclusion to the site-wide restoration of Fulham Palace. We still need to restore three key areas: the Tudor Courtyard, the botanical gardens, and the Gothic Chapel. Our challenges are also to deepen the connection that our users make with the site’s rich built and horticultural heritage, widen the audience base, attract more visitors and create a viable future for the site. It costs £1million each year to keep Fulham Palace open to the public seven days a week. We anticipate that this final phase will cost a further £5million. We cannot do this alone. Fulham Palace will not be restored without your help.

This is a rare limited edition copy of the catalogue for Christie’s sale of Dresses from the Collection of Diana, Princess of Wales, signed on the title page by the Princess of Wales herself. The volume is in itself a beautiful object, but the real treasure lies in the Princess’ keen interest in and personal connection with the auction, which she curated in the months leading up to her death and which is evident in this autographed work. A sheet of headed notepaper from Princess Diana’s private household at Kensington Palace is attached to the title page, and bears a handwritten inscription: ‘The inspiration for this wonderful sale comes from just one person….our son William. Diana. June 1997’. The sale of Dresses from the Collection of Diana, Princess of Wales took place at Christie’s, New York, on 25th June 1997, just 6 days before her death. 24. A tour of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, together with lunch at the High Table, with Dame Fiona Reynolds David Levenson CC
This is an exclusive opportunity to dine at one of Cambridge University’s collegiate High Tables, traditionally an experience permissible by invitation only. Accompanied by Dame Fiona Reynolds, Master of the College and formerly Director-General of the National Trust, you will enjoy a walking tour of the College before joining her for lunch in the stunning banqueting hall. This is a must for anyone with an active interest in history, heritage or who is keen to understand the workings of one of the most lauded higher education institutions in the world. The former site of a Dominican priory, Emmanuel College was founded in 1584 by Sir Walter Mildmay, Chancellor of the Exchequer to Elizabeth I. Parts of the monastic buildings still remain: the Hall is built on the foundations of the nave of the Dominicans’ church. Numbered amongst the university’s larger colleges, today Emmanuel occupies extensive grounds in the centre of Cambridge and is home to over 500 undergraduates. Dame Fiona Reynolds DBE became Master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 2012. She came to the college from the National Trust, of which she was Director-General from 2001-2012. During her time at the National Trust she made it warmer and more welcoming, bringing the houses to life and raising the profile of the Trust’s work in the countryside. Fiona was appointed CBE for services to the environment and conservation in 1998 and DBE in 2008. With thanks to Dame Fiona Reynolds.

The property and promises offered in this sale and listed in this catalogue (the ‘Lots’) will be sold by Fulham Palace Trust (FPT), a registered charity with the Charity Commissioners in England and Wales under number 1140088. Any questions in relation to the auction should be directed to Fulham Palace Trust, Fulham Palace, Bishop’s Avenue, London SW6 6EA. The following terms and conditions govern the sale of all the property offered at each Auction (as amended by posted notice or oral announcements during the relevant Auction). By participating in an Auction, all prospective bidders and purchasers agree to be bound by these terms and conditions. 1. FPT assumes no risk, liability or responsibility for the value, authenticity or the authorship of any lots (including, without limitation, the identity of the creator or the period, culture, source or origin, as the case may be, with which the creation of any lot is identified) or for any errors of description or any misstatement of any matter affecting the lot. 2 . All lots are sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description and FPT makes no representations or warranties of any kind or nature, expressed or implied, with respect to the lots and shall in no event be responsible for the correctness of any descriptions of lots, nor be deemed to have made any representations or warranties of value, physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, genuineness, attribution, authenticity or provenance of the lots. 3. No statement in the brochure or other description made at the sale, in any sale invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a representation or warranty. Prospective bidders or purchasers should rely on their own judgement as to all matters affecting the lot and satisfy themselves prior to the Auction as to the condition of each lot including, where possible, inspecting a lot before bidding to determine its condition and size. 4. FPT accepts no responsibility in connection with the commissioning of its staff to bid for any lots, including via telephone. 5. Lots in the Auction may be offered subject to reserves. Where a reserve has been placed on any lot, FPT may withdraw that lot in the event that the highest bid price for that lot does not meet such reserve. 6. Unless otherwise announced at the time of sale, all bids must be made per lot as numbered in the brochure. 7. Those bidders participating in the Auction but not present in person (including, without limitation, telephone bidders and commission bids, as applicable) shall be required to provide their name, address and contact details to FPT before participating in the Auction, unless otherwise expressly agreed by FPT. 8. Any lot may be altered or withdrawn by FPT at any time before the actual sale. 9. FPT reserves the right to reject a bid from any bidder without giving any reason. 10. Without prejudice to paragraphs 8 and 9 above, if FPT determines (in its absolute discretion) that any opening bid for a lot in the Auction is not commensurate with the value of such lot, FPT may reject the same and withdraw the Auction lot from sale. If, having acknowledged an opening bid, FPT decides (in its absolute discretion) that any advance thereafter is insufficient FPT may reject such opening bid and all subsequent advances and withdraw the lot from sale. 11. By placing a bid on a lot each bidder represents, warrants and undertakes that it has the authority and capacity to enter such bid and close the transaction and that any bid it makes constitutes an irrevocable offer to buy the lot in question for the full amount of the bid. No bid may be withdrawn or cancelled by a bidder once accepted by FPT, except with the express consent of FPT. 37
12. Subject to the reserve price (if any) being met, the highest bidder for any lot in the Auction shall be deemed to have purchased the relevant Auction lot subject to those terms and conditions and such purchaser shall thereupon: a) immediately assume all risk and responsibility in respect of such lot; b) where the highest bidder is present in person and without prejudice to paragraph 11 above, sign a confirmation of purchase of such lot, and provide correct name, address and contact details, as soon as practicable on the night of the Auction; and c) pay the full purchase price for the relevant lot within seven days of the date of the Auction. 13. All sales are final and in no circumstances will FPT rescind any purchase made, refund any amount paid, or exchange any lot except as expressly provided under paragraph 18 of these terms and conditions. 14. Payments for purchases must be made in sterling and in one of the following forms: cash, cheque (backed by cheque guarantee card), or bank transfer to a bank account to be specified by FPT. 15. Neither shipping nor delivery costs shall be included in the price of the lot and these will therefore be payable by the purchaser in addition to the lot purchase price. 16. FPT will not release a lot to a successful purchaser until payment of the total amount due in respect of such lot has been received. Without prejudice to the foregoing sentence, the purchaser shall remove the relevant lot from the premises of FPT (or such other premises where the lot is held) within three days of making full payment for the relevant lot, or such longer period as FPT may agree in writing. If such lot is not removed within such period, or where such lot has not been paid for within the seven day period set out in paragraph 12(c) above, FPT may (at its sole discretion) put the lot into storage at the risk and expense of the purchaser and the cost of such storage will then be charged to the purchaser of the relevant lot in addition to the lot purchase price until the lot is removed or resold. 17. Title in a lot shall not pass to the purchaser of such lot until payment of the total amount due in respect of such lot has been received and such lot has been removed from FPT premises (or any premises where the lot is stored in accordance with paragraph 16 above) by or on behalf of the purchaser. 18. If a purchaser fails to comply with these terms and conditions in a timely fashion, then in addition to other remedies available to FPT by law, including, without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid price, FPT, at its option, may: a) where the purchaser’s failure to comply with these terms and conditions is in respect of payment obligations, cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the purchaser (provided that any such cancellation shall not relieve the purchaser of any payment obligation it owes to FPT pursuant to paragraph 16 above); or b) resell the Auction lot (either publicly or privately) on three days’ notice to the purchaser and at the risk of the purchaser. In such event the purchaser shall be liable to FPT for payment as a debt of any shortfall between the original ale price and the price achieved upon resale, all other charges due hereunder as well any incidental costs or damages incurred by FPT (including, without limitation, all administration expenses relating to the re-sale of the relevant lot). For the avoidance of doubt, where the purchaser has paid for the lot, FPT will refund the amount of such payment to the purchaser subject to a deduction of any and all sums due under this agreement from the purchaser to FPT (including, without limitation, pursuant to this paragraph 18(b) and to paragraph 16 above), provided that where such sum is insufficient to make payment of any and all debts owed by the purchaser to FPT under these terms and conditions, the amount of any such deficiency shall be due as a debt from the purchaser to FPT. 19. In the event of any dispute arising at any time in relation to the Auction or any lot (including, without limitation, any dispute arising between competing bidders), FPT shall have complete discretion to settle such dispute as it sees fit. The decision of FPT in relation to any such dispute shall be final and no correspondence shall be entered into. 20. These conditions of sale, as well as the purchaser’s and FPT’s respective rights and obligations hereunder, shall be governed by and construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. By bidding in the Auction, whether present in person or by agent, commission bid, telephone or other means, the purchaser shall be deemed to have consented to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of England and Wales. 38
