An intending buyer unable to make technical examinations and assessments is recommended to seek advice from a gunmaker or from the specialist in charge. All prospective buyers are advised to consult the lists of bore and wall-thickness measurements posted in the saleroom. Potential buyers should note that guns are stripped only where there is a strong indication of a mechanical malfunction. Stripping is not otherwise undertaken. Guns intended for use should be stripped and cleaned beforehand. Hammer guns should have their rebound mechanisms checked before use. The safety mechanisms of all guns must be tested before use.

HOLLAND & HOLLAND

A FINE PAIR OF PREATER-ENGRAVED 12-BORE “ROYAL DELUXE” MODEL SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR GUNS, NOS. 40266/7

28-inch chopper-lump barrels with 2 3/4-inch chambers, about 1/4 and 1/2 choke borings, the frames, hand detachable locks and gold numbered top levers profusely engraved with game scenes surrounded by bold foliate scrollwork, the fences carved with leaves, the lock plates engraved with scenes of pheasants in realistic landscapes and each signed with engraver’s initials “KP”, the action bases with further scenes and again signed by the engraver, retaining much of their original bright finish, gold lined cocking indicators and rolled edge trigger guards, 15-inch highly figured stocks including leather covered recoil pads, 7lb., nitro proof, in their maker’s lightweight leather case

The maker confirms that the guns were completed in 1975, the original order being dated 27 February 1973. The ledger page records much detail about the order and notes that the stocks of the guns “..are to match colour and figure of a Monk gun, to be round of horn with slender hand and grip”. These guns are probably the only pair of “Royal Deluxe” that have been built with rounded horns.

Ken Preater has worked almost exclusively for Holland & Holland since apprenticing as an engraver in the 1950s. Specialising in game scenes and bold scrollwork, he soon became Holland & Holland’s chief engraver and was responsible for much of the work on the Products of Excellence Series and many of the unique commissions that Holland & Holland undertook in the 1970s and 1980s.

(b) All oral and/or written information provided to Bidders relating to lots, including descriptions in the catalogue, condition reports or elsewhere are statements of GG’s opinion and not representations of fact. Estimates may not be relied on as a prediction of the selling price or value of the lot and may be revised from time to time at GG’s absolute discretion.
