EUGÉNE GALIEN-LALOUE (1854-1941)
The artist was born in Paris in 1854 and was mainly known for his impressionist portrayal of Parisian street scenes. In 1877 he was a student of Charles Laloue, a long-time member of the Artistes Francais. During the early part of his career he used a number of pseudonyms to overcome an exclusive contract with a major gallery. These included L. Dupuy, J. Lievin and E. Galiany, all of which are listed in the catalogue Raisonne. Galien-Laloue worked mainly in gouache with a light expressive style, he depicted the atmosphere of the French street scene of the early 1900’s with an accuracy that reflected that iconic era. Indeed he was one of the first painters to historically represent these bustling streets, and as such has been a great influence to a host of later painters, such as Edouard Cortes and Antoine Blanchard.

Old Masters & Oil Paintings
OLD MASTERS
We gratefully acknowledge Mr Bernard Vermet's assistance in cataloguing this lot. Mr Vermet is currently writing the catalogue raisonne on the artist
Dirk van Delen was born in 1604 or 1605 in Heusden, Holland. His father was Corstiaen Dircksse from The Hague, who married a local girl, Cornelia Jansdochter. Van Delen’s first tutor was thought to be the little known Hendrick Aerts, although another candidate is Jan Steenwijk the younger (c.1580-before 1649), whose influence and that of many of the architectural painters in Antwerp at the time, is very clear on Van Delen's first period The artist seemed to have been largely self-taught, using prints and books as inspiration. He may have been a pupil of Jacob Wijnants (c.1600-1637). Wijnants was a witness at his marriage to Maria van der Gracht, who was the daughter of the burgomaster of Anemuiden. Van Delen succeeded his father-in-law as burgomaster and also served as Consul of Zeeland. From 1718 he became a pupil of Frans Hals (1583-1666) and there are stories of how the painters, Adriaen Brouwer and Dirck van Delen, played practical jokes on their master.
Most of the artists pictures from the 1620's feature dark angular Renaissance-style architecture and usually includes a vanishing point exactly in the middle of the work. Rarely would van Delen attempt asymmetrical views in early examples. Views of palaces and church interiors were some of van Delen’s favourite subjects.
The present work depicts the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, also known as "Dives and Lazarus". It is taken from the Gospel of Luke XVI: 19-31. It is most likely identical to the one sold for 19 guilders to Jonkers at the auction of the collection of the late Mr.D.G.Van der Burge van Kronenburg on 6th September 1824. The entry number 110 reads as follows: "In a beautiful room with a gallery, on which Lazarus seems to be sitting, one sees a distinguished company dining.” Bernard Vermet tells us that the painting is one of the earliest known by the artist so far. There are at least three other pictures from later in 1626. A church interior and two Palace exteriors, showing that Van Delen used all three types of common architectural scenes from the very beginning of his career. Vermet goes on to tell us that all four paintings are already highly characteristic of the artist’s personal style, with only small deviations, such as, in our case, a colonnade with pillars instead of columns, and a console above the middle of the windows. The Renaissance architecture, with it's dominance of black, red/brown and yellowish marble is imaginary and far too rich and heavy for a realistic interior. The silver glass ball that is hanging from the ceilingas in Vermeer's "Allegory of Faith" should theoretically show us the distorted image of the painter at work, but this is not as such recognisable. The present work is of great value in that it sheds more light on Van Delen's development as an artist and shows that he made extensive use of sources in a very personal way and never to the extent of mere copying. The first and most important source for the artist was a work of the same subject by Bartholomeus van Bassen (1590-1652) that was auctioned in 1926 in Amsterdam. This is extremely interesting in that our vendor can remember his father purchasing the present work from "Gooden and Fox" of Bury Street, St. James's, London during the 1930's, when it was attributed to Bartholomeus van Bassen. John Quilter of that firm was a cousin of the family, and our vendor has a very clear recollection of the work hanging in his parents home “Bagpath Court” in Gloucestershire, as well as in several other earlier residences.
The entire foreground, of our picture, including the dog between the vase and the wine cooler, as well as the table with all it's figures are directly copied from Van Bassen's picture (see accompanying documentation) however the staffage in his work was painted by Esaias van de Velde (1587-1630), who himself based his rich man behind the table on the work of Frans Francken II (1581-1642). This work is not dated, but from around the same time as a painting of the same subject by Van Bassen and Van de Velde that is signed and dated 1624. Both artists occasionally worked together on other versions, one of which can be seen in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. In our painting the staffage and the figures are entirely painted by Van Delen, hence they are not transparent, do not show architecture underneath, and details like the shining light on the balustrade, were added after the staffage was finished. The couple entering the hall through the doorway on the right, though not too far in style from Van de Velde, is clearly based on a prototype by Dirck Hals and used by Van Delen on a number of occasions. This fact alone - that there are figures based on two different artists in a single painting - proves that neither of these two were involved personally here. Over the years however Van Delen’s skills grew to such a level that there is a persistent misunderstanding that Dirck Hals, in the 1620's, and Anthony Palamedesz, in the 1630's, added the staffage to many of Van Delen's pictures. ** For further extensive documentation relating to the artist and his work, please refer to the printed material by Bernard Vermet, displayed in the Saleroom.

Mark Senior N.P.S (1862-1927) was born at Hanging Heaton near Dewsbury in the old West Riding of Yorkshire. He was educated in Batley and lived at Ossett near Wakefield. He will however always be associated with Runswick Bay on the coast of North Yorkshire where he and his family spent many holidays at the house he built in 1919. Senior completed his art training at the Wakefield College of Art, and the Slade School of Art, under Alphonse Legros. He became a member of the British Impressionist group of painters, who drew inspiration from the French ‘En Plein Air’. They painted with vibrant colours and with fleeting impressions of the natural world and the people in it. Senior is most remembered for his portrayal of the fishing community of Runswick and Staithes. His contemporaries were, Gilbert Foster, Harold and Dame Laura Knight, Frederick William Jackson, James William Booth (Who was Senior’s pupil) Owen Bowen, Arthur Friedenson, Frederick William Mayor, Charles Mackie, and Roland Henry Hill who said of Senior,’ he was one of the men for whom everybody had a great deal of affection and he regularly helped his fellow painters in a practical way’. October 2013 Sale Report
At 516 lots, the autumn offering of pictures, silver and jewellery had something for everyone and it felt as though everyone bought something with a selling rate approaching ninety per cent. There was strength in all areas with some superb diamond rings on offer, some highly sought after silver flatware, collector’s coins and some good local privately consigned collections of top listed artists whose works are nearly always guaranteed to sell.
The day began with over a hundred lots of high value silver and trade was brisk with very little unsold. Most appealing was a set of twenty four early 18th century Britannia standard silver pistol grip table knives and forks in a shagreen slope front box and attributed to John Wells, London. It is rare to find twelve table knives and matching two pronged forks from this era in a period canteen box and the £2,000/3,000 estimate reflected the fact. After fierce competition they were bought by a southern buyer for £3,550. At the other end of the timeline spectrum, a canteen of Victorian Old English pattern silver cutlery by Adams and Chawner, London 1876 and housed in a mahogany canteen cabinet sold for a mid-estimate £1,550. In the jewellery section a beautiful Art Deco sapphire and diamond ring with a large square trap cut sapphire claw set, underlined the strength of this genre when it sold to a London private buyer for £8,800 against hopes of £4,000/6,000. A few lots later, another Art Deco diamond set plaque cluster ring designed as five brilliant cut diamonds mille grain set sold for £2,250 against an estimate of £2,000/4,000. Another Art Deco style ring with a large box set central diamond was also popular at £1,900.
A small section of just over 50 lots of coins and medals saw plenty of competition for a selection of Royal Mint proof coins including a 2003 gold proof coronation anniversary £5 crown at £850, a 2001 gold proof Victorian anniversary £5 crown at £800 and a 2002 Golden Jubilee £5 crown for the same amount. The medals on offer saw a private collection of motoring medals belonging to the late Miss D.C.N. Champney (1909-1968) gross nearly £3,000 over 12 lots. Miss Champney was an experienced rally and trials driver in the 1930s and her Monte Carlo 1934 XIIIeme Rallye Automobile medallion took a triple estimate £950. Of the five top prices of the day, four were for paintings and the afternoon session saw canvases changing hands for regular four figure sums with three paintings selling for five figure sums. Nearly all of the top lots were bought by private people reflecting a shift in the buying habits of a traditional market-twenty years ago, the trade would have dominated here.
David Shepherd (b.1931), well known for his animal studies was represented here by an oil on canvas titled ‘Tiger in the Sun’. Estimated at £10,000/15,000, this beautiful study of a noble animal eventually changed hands for £20,000 selling to a Nottinghamshire buyer. The front cover lot meanwhile, a magnificent study of racing yachts in the 1934 King’s Cup at Cowes by John Steven Dews (b.1949) was bought by a local private buyer for £15,000.
Myles Birket Foster R.W.S. (1825-1899) is an artist whose prices at auction have fluctuated widely over the last two decades but the best examples are still highly prized. The lot offered here titled ‘The Young Shepherds’, watercolour and body colour and signed with monogram was an exquisite example of his work. Estimated at a conservative £7,000/9,000, it sold to a Surrey buyer for £11,500.
Halls were favoured this sale with a good private consignment of works by the French artist Eugene Galien-Laloue (1854-1940). Of these, the most popular was a view of Port Dieppe, with figures in the foreground and anchored gaff rigged fishing vessels beyond. Estimated at £6,000/9,000, it sold to a Devon buyer for £9,200. The next lot, by the same artist and titled ‘Unloading the Catch’ took £5,300 whilst a gouache by Laloue entitled ‘Les Halles Metro’ sold for £5,000. Other highlights included a magnificent album of watercolours by Albert Goodwin R.W.S. (1845-1932) which was split over 34 lots by the auctioneers and realized a total of £30,000, a Queen Anne silver tankard, London 1712 at £2,200, a Hunt and Roskell silver gallery tray of 109oz for £2,050, a white gold diamond set tennis bracelet for £2,100 and a sapphire set example for £1,550.

C ARRIAGE & PACKING
Whilst Halls Fine Art are not packers or shippers we are happy to liaise with your chosen carrier for removal of lots after sale. Please note, no lots shall be released to a carrier until payment has been received.
Prospective buyers should note that although every effort is made to note repairs, restoration and damage in the catalogue descriptions, a lack of any such note should not be taken to imply that the lot is in perfect condition.
Prospective buyers are reminded that coloured gemstones have historically been treated to enhance their appearance. A variety of methods have been, and are currently used to improve both transparency and colour of various gemstones. All yellow and white metals have not been tested. The International Jewellery Trade generally accept these methods. It is not possible for Halls to obtain gemmological reports on all stones offered for sale and therefore all Halls Holding’s estimates assume that gemstones have been enhanced.
Prospective buyers must satisfy themselves with a condition report prior to bidding, Halls Holdings can take no responsibility for condition of purchased lots if condition reports were not requested.
