A staunch Liberal and supporter of gladstone, who visited Port Sunlight in 1891, he was selected a Liberal candidate for Birkenhead the same year. He stood against a well entrenched Conservative, Lord Bury. Leverhulme threw himself into the political fray organising an extensive campaign by which he reduced the Conservative majority in the 1892 election by almost half. Lever fought Birkenhead in 1892,1894 and 1895 as a gladstonian Liberal, on each occasion losing to his Conservative opponent. He had no ambition to be an MP but perhaps felt it his duty to help gladstone, who he strongly supported, by being prepared to be a parliamentary candidate in seats he assumed the Liberals would not win. He went on to fight the Wirral in 1900 - losing again. Then, to his consternation, in the Liberal landslide of 1906, he fought there again and won! He proceeded to agree with the Liberal whips that he would not resign the seat until the next general Election provided he was not expected to attend at Westminster unless specially summoned, thereby avoiding a difficult by-election for the government. In 1910 he fought ormskirk and duly lost to the future Lord Derby. £2,000 - £4,000

The artist was born in Paris, he was mainly known for his impressionistic portrayal of that City. In 1877 he was a student of Charles Laloue, a long time member of the Artistes Francais. During the early part of his career he used a number of pseudonyms to overcome an exclusive contract with a major gallery, these included, L.Dupuy, J.Lievin and E.galiany, all of which are listed in the catalogue raisonne. He worked mainly in gouache with a light expressive style. He depicted the early 1900’s with an accuracy that reflected that iconic era, indeed he was one of the first painters to historically represent these bustling streets and as such has been a great influence to a host of later artists, such as Edouard Cortes and Antoine Blanchard. £7,000 - £8,000

He is renowned for producing industrial scenes of Northern life, in fact he was referred to as the ‘Liverpool Lowry’. He acquired the nickname ‘Braaq’ in his school days, on account of his artistic talent after the French painter georges Braque, a misspelling then transformed Braque into ‘Braaq’. He was the fourth child of a large family (twelve siblings) his father Dennis was an established artist, and one of his brothers also called Dennis is a Lanarkshire (Coatbridge) based sculptor and painter. Brian held his first exhibition in 1974, and in 1977 was invited to hold four shows in London, he was described by ‘The Times’ as ‘’one of the six most successful artists in England. The Liverpool Echo also featured him in many of their issues, often comparing him to Manchester’s, Laurence Stephen Lowry. In the late 1970’s tragedy struck and his sister Ann sadly died at the extremely young age of twenty, in memory of her, many of his pictures were not only signed, but inscribed ‘Ann’. He is also renowned for painting himself into many of his pictures, wearing wellies and invariably a black and white striped cotton jumper, apparently the jumper was the only ‘’new’’ item of clothing he ever remembered receiving as a young boy. Most of his life was spent working as a trainee chef in Harrogate, when some murals he painted on the walls of the hotel he worked at were discovered, it caused quite a stir and for several weeks a search was carried out with the help of the local newspapers to find out who had produced them, it is generally accepted that this had been a publicity stunt, which obviously worked to promote his work in Harrogate and Leeds, it is said that he produced pub signs for local hostelries. Although successful he was often faced with financial difficulties and was declared bankrupt towards the end of his career, he sadly died of a brain haemorrhage at the early age of forty six. His works are now extremely popular and realise many tens of thousands both in the Salerooms and in retail galleries. Sold together with a facsimile of a letter from the artist to the vendor’s husband.

Wednesday 16th July – Sale Report What is forty million years old, valued for its colour and weight and is currently experiencing a boom in the auction market? The answer is amber, a real hit with Middle Eastern and Chinese buyers, prized for its natural attributes as well as its perceived aphrodisiac qualities when reduced to an oil.Whilst Halls’ July auction did not presage a Summer of Love, amber bead necklaces took three of the top five prices and certainly gave the auctioneers, and perhaps the buyers, a warm fuzzy feeling! The first amber necklace to be given the green light was a graduated example comprising twenty-nine oval butterscotch and honey coloured amber beads which weighed approximately 110 grams. They sold for £4,000 to a Middlesex buyer who also took the next lot, an amber bead necklace comprising forty six oval butterscotch beads and weighing 91 grams. Top price of the day however was for a thirty five bead example comprising of oval and honey coloured amber beads weighing in at 161 grams which went to the same Middlesex buyer for £6,000.
Elsewhere in the auction, silver was typically well received selling solidly with some great prices for a rare Victorian Palm pattern canteen which was split over several lots. The sponsor’s mark was for George Adams for Chawner and Company, London 1864 and it ended up selling to a Cheshire buyer for a combined total of around £10,000.Another cased part canteen of cutlery in the Old English pattern by Josiah Williams and Co, London 1922 and weighing approximately 118oz also sold above estimate to the London trade for £1,900.
Jewellery continues to perform well at auction with a pretty pink sapphire and diamond cluster ring selling to a private buyer from Barmouth for £2,800 against hopes of £1,800/2,200 and a diamond set and ruby buckle bracelet also popular at £1,850 which found a new home near Market Drayton.
Amongst the pictures a still life of tulips in oils by Duncan James Corrow Grant (1185-1978) showed the strength of the market for the Camden Town group of artists when it sold to a southern academic institution for £3,500. This was almost matched by the interest in the work of Robert Jobling (1841-1923) a successful Newcastle upon Tyne artist who studied under W. Cosens-Way and whose work is now held by the Laing Art Gallery. Here, Halls offered an oil on canvas of a beach scene with figures sorting the catch, possibly of Cullercoats. It sold to a Durham trade buyer for £3,000. Other notable results include £2,300 given by a Ledbury buyer for John Armigel Wade’s ‘Catching Up’, £2,150 for Mark Senior’s ‘ Ludlow, Night’ and £2,000 for Henry John Yeend King’s study of girls feeding chickens in a sunlit field.

A variety of methods have been, and are currently used to improve both transparency and colour of various gemstones. All yellow and white metals have not been tested. The International Jewellery Trade generally accept these methods. It is not possible for Halls to obtain gemmological reports on all stones offered for sale and therefore all Halls Holding’s estimates assume that gemstones have been enhanced.
Prospective buyers must satisfy themselves with a condition report prior to bidding, Halls Holdings can take no responsibility for condition of purchased lots if condition reports were not requested.
