The Jean and Charles Bawden Collection of Early English Porcelain
THE COLLECTION OF JEAN AND CHARLES BAWDEN A blue and white tea bowl with a tall pagoda pattern, bought with a group of Chinese bowls and saucers, ignited Jean and Charles’ passion for English porcelain that lasted over 30 years. on a visit in 1971 to shrewsbury, where Jean grew up, they recognised that their first purchase bought earlier in the year, was Caughley. They were drawn to a collection of Caughley in Wycherley’s antique shop, bought the 33 pieces and a display cabinet for £275 which fuelled their love of Caughley.
LITERATURE KEY godden, geoffrey, ‘Caughley and Worcester Porcelain 1775-1800 – C&WP ironbridge gorge Museum Trust, ‘A Bicentenary of Caughley Porcelain 1772-1779) – CBE Holloway, Chris and Marno, Felicity, ‘Caughley Toy Wares’ – CT
The 1972 Centenary Caughley exhibition in shrewsbury further Holloway, Chris and Marno, Felicity, ‘Paul encouraged their passion as they started to understand the rich sandby and related influences on Caughley variety of Caughley factory wares. over the next 30 years they Porcelain’ – Ps&CP assembled a collection of over 200 pieces of Caughley , together with porcelain from other factories. “La Chasse” was exhilarating, and they enjoyed seeking out Caughley in unexpected places including finding 21 pieces of a tea service at a sale in a Holiday inn! on several occasions, sometimes accompanied by their children they visited the Caughley and Coalport factory sites, picking up shards, including part of an unglazed button. on one occasion lunch at the pub beckoned and they left an almost complete unglazed egg cup with a pile of shards only to find on their return that it had been stepped upon! These items are now with the shrewsbury Museum. Caughley was their dominant interest but their collection includes examples from the Worcester, Liverpool and Coalport factories. Charles particularly relished the challenge of identifying pieces and the origin of designs - a natural complement to his professional life as an academic in oriental studies - and his researches led to various articles in the Caughley society and the northern Ceramic society newsletters. Jean loved the history, craftsmanship and the aesthetics of the pieces which they displayed in their home. Many new friends were made through their love of porcelain. Collecting Caughley gave Jean and Charles immense pleasure. Their most loved purchases were a rare salad bowl which may be the one illustrated in geoffrey godden’s book ‘Caughley and Worcester Porcelains 1775-1800’,and a mug printed with the portrait of a shepherdess which is discussed in an article in the Collectors’ guide in May 1976. Also exciting is an initialled mug bought as possibly Caughley but which later was attributed to the isleworth factory. it is with pride that Charles and his family are now offering the collection for sale so that others may enjoy the pieces that provided Jean and Charles with aesthetic, intellectual and emotional joy.
Lot 2 Lot 2 A CAUGHLEY OVAL BASKET, circa 1776-80, the diamond pierced tapering sides with flower head applications, set within rope twist handles with foliate terminals including ‘hot cross bun buds’, the interior basket printed in blue with the Pine Cone pattern within a blue painted ‘lambrequin’ border, the exterior details picked out in blue, underglaze blue C with serif mark and impressed salopian, 27.5cm wide
Lot 1 Lot 1 A CAUGHLEY OVAL BAKING DISH, circa 1780-90, transfer printed in underglaze blue with the Fisherman or Pleasure Boat pattern within a cell diaper and spear head border, unmarked, 23.5cm wide For a similar example see godden, geoffrey; Caughley and Worcester Porcelain 1775-1800, Herbert Jenkins, 1969 (hereafter referred to as C&W P), plate 87 for a similar example from the author’s collection and noted as being made in several different £180 - £220 sizes.
This form of basket was first developed by the modeller John Toulouse at Worcester in the 1770’s. it has been posited that Toulose also worked at Caughley, the ‘hot cross bun buds’ being a signature £400 - £600 of his style.

see Holloway, Chris and Marno, Felicity ‘Caughley Toy Wares’ (Hereby referred to as CT), page 66, figure 23 which show items from a Caughley toy tea and coffee service in the same pattern, where the author notes that although these toy wares were too small to have been useful as playthings, they are notably too large for dolls houses when compared to other similar toy wares by Caughley, such as their dinner service wares, two plates of which are included in lot 56 of £200 - £300 this sale.
Lot 10 Lot 10 A SMALL CAUGHLEY COFFEE CAN, circa 1777-84, transfer-printed in underglaze blue with the Apple and Damsons pattern, below a single line associated blue border, underglaze blue C mark, 6cm £80 - £120 high (small chip to foot rim)

The cover kept the custard warm’. see also Halls sale, April 28th, 2010 - where a similar £250 - £300 example sold for £420.

see Caughley Exhbition in Colour, page 69, in reference to plates 164166, which discusses this pattern. The author notes that this popular pattern was used on both Caughley and Chamberlains porcelain teawares, it has also even been found on Coalport. The motto shows a French origin for the pattern but no example has yet been identified. £100 - £150
Lot 16 Lot 16 A CAUGHLEY COFFEE CUP, circa 1785, with double indented loop handle, transfer-printed in underglaze blue with the Fence pattern, below an associated double blue line rim, C mark, 7cm high, together with a Caughley tea bowl, circa 1780-90, transfer-printed in underglaze blue with the Fence and House pattern, with internal associated Fitzhugh border, umarked, 8cm diameter (2) £60 - £80

see also Holloway Chris, and Marno, Felicity ‘Paul sandby and related influences on Caughley Porcelain’, p. 37 for a discussion of the travellers print. it is suggested that the rarity of the Travellers print probably reflects a lack of popularity at the time, thus we can assume that these wares were only produced for a short period. £120 - £180
see CW&P, page 205, plate 73, alongside ‘Caughley Porcelains’ - A Bi-Centenary Exhibition’, pl.23, Cat. 341 for a similar example of the cup, which is recorded in Chamberlain records as the ‘Prince’s Feather’s’ pattern. This pattern is also discussed more extensively within The Caughley in Colour Exhibition Catalogue of 2005, produced by the ironbridge gorge Museum trust on page 15, where the author notes ‘The period over which Caughley was produced was one of scandal in the royal family. There was the ‘madness’ of King george iii and much political attention to the overspending of the Prince of Wales. The cartoonists were lampooning the Prince of Wales mercilessly and he seemed to have few friends other than his brother, Frederick Duke of York and the Fox/sheridan combination who saw him as a way of displacing Pitt. it is therefore unlikely that these wares were made for the public and it seem almost certain £200 - £400 that they were for royal use’.
Lot 22
8
Lot 26 A CAUGHLEY TEA BOWL AND SAUCER, circa 1778, painted in blue with the ‘Waiting Chinaman’ pattern and supplementary floral sprays, with an associated blue line bridge border, painted blue s marks, tea bowl 8cm diameter, saucer 12cm diameter. £100 - £150

Lot 25 Lot 25 A CAUGHLEY POLYCHROME TEA BOWL, circa 1785-90, painted with flowers, below a red line and purple border, unmarked, 8cm diameter see Caughley in Colour, page 68 for a discussion of this pattern, which is noted as being a variant of a famille rose pattern. These were popular and are found on Bow, Worcester and new Hall amongst others. item 158, is noted as being the most authentic version, with its darker crysanthemum flower, similar to this tea £30 - £50 bowl and its pink lattice rim.

This suggests that there may have been a dessert service dating from the latter part of the 1780s, which, if the tureens are anything to go by, would have been of excellent quality’. £250 - £350
Lot 51

By the release of godden’s book on Caughley and Worcester porcelains, the author knew of only six pieces in this pattern. it was gaye Blake roberts who first shed significant light on these designs in 1974 within an English Ceramic Circle Transaction paper in which it was reported that the source of several scenes from a Bright Landscapes dessert service were taken from Paul sandby’s Virtouosis’ Museum published in 1778. The gold star Border and spangles dessert service was first £600 - £800 illustrated in 1969 by godden. research has shown that there are at least two dessert services with this gilt design.

see The 1976 Caughley Exhibition catalogue, illustrates this plate with the suggestion that this was made as a replacement for a Qianlong export porcelain service specially commissioned by the family, the original pieces of which are on display in the V&A museum. They think it would have been commissioned by Majorgeneral sir John Braithwaite, who was Commander in Chief of the coast of Coromandel in india. see also CBE Catalogue, plate 667 on £150 - £200 page 62, where this dish is again illustrated.
see Caughley Exhibition Catalogue, 1976, page 84 where this mug is discussed, ‘The decoration appears to have its origins in a design by samuel shelley, a small drawing by him in his sketch book is one of a series showing idealised people with landscapes or rural settings. shelley was born in Whitechapel and was mainly self-educated. He exhibited at both the incorporated society royal Academy and became one of the most fashionable miniaturists of the period. shelley resided in Covent garden from 1780-94, where he established himself at 6, george street, Hanover square. His work was extensively engraved by Bartolozzi, nutler, Watson and others; and it would be from one of these prints that the inspiration for the decoration of the this mug £300 - £500 would have been drawn.’

8th October 2014 – Sale Report There are teapots for tea and there are teapots for show and there are teapots which were definitely not meant to be used on a daily basis! Just such a vessel provided the top selling lot in Halls’ 8th October auction when a Royal Worcester example by George Owen came up for sale. George Owen was a Worcester master modeller famous for his pierced work and this particular teapot had a delicate double walled reticulated body which showed off his skill to perfection. Dated to around 1880, the teapot was estimated at a cautious £2,500/3,500 but stole the show when it sold to a Shrewsbury private buyer for £5,600. The autumn sale was a showcase for fine porcelain which provided nearly half of the top ten selling lots of the day. Private collections of fruit painted Royal Worcester, partly consigned appropriately from a Worcestershire client, saw fierce competition for several lots. The top slot was taken by a fruit painted tea and coffee service comprising some thirty three pieces and painted by various artists including Bowen, Sigley-Lewis and Cook. Estimated at £700/1,000, it sold to a Kent buyer for £3,400. A pair of Royal Worcester fruit painted pot pourri vases from the same collection and painted by Freeman in 1964 also performed well selling to a Worcestershire buyer for £1,450. Another single fruit painted pot pourri vase, also by Freeman sold to a Kent buyer for £1,000. The ceramics theme continued with the advent of a section titled ‘Made in Shropshire’ which included a private collection of Coalport and another of Caughley. In this latter tranche, a very rare Caughley blue and white pounce pot dated to 178090 exceeded hopes of £1,500/2,000 when it sold to a Shropshire collector for £3,100. This was by far the highest price for Caughley in the session although a Caughley blue and white spittoon or saffer pot dated to 1775 was popular when it tripled a bottom estimate of £300 to take £1,250 from a Shropshire private buyer. A raft of strong results then followed for the sixty lot Caughley section with a large tart or patty pan realizing £700, a salad bowl in the Pine Cone pattern,£480, a Waiting Chinaman pattern coffee cup and saucer £530 and a composite part tea and coffee service £400. ‘Brown’ furniture continues to perform well beyond media expectations for the right pieces and here an early Victorian mahogany wind out dining table with four leaves and leaf cabinet made a healthy £2,800 when it sold to a Bristol buyer bidding on the internet. A pair of early 19th century mahogany pedestal cabinets attributed to Gillows of Lancaster proved that there is certainly something in a ‘name’ when they were picked up by the Gloucestershire trade for £2,500 against hopes of £2,000/4,000. Other memorable results included £2,400 tendered by the Cheshire trade for an attractive mahogany and inlaid triple wardrobe by Maple and Co, £2,000 offered by the Sussex trade for a set of Victorian walnut jockey scales and £1,400 given by a Craven Arms buyer for a Regency rosewood and tulipwood banded sofa table. Other notable results included £2,900 for an early 18th century weather worn Italian white marble bust depicting Apollo given by a London internet buyer, £2,600 for a Persian carpet which sold to an American buyer and £2,500 for a Wedgwood Fairyland lustre centre bowl in the Woodland Elves pattern which sold to a Worcestershire buyer.
