Bowdon old Hall, CHesHire There has been a house on the present site of Bowdon Old Hall since the sixteenth century if not before with the present property on Langham Road dating to the early eighteenth century. Over this time there have been various owners beginning with the Bowdons of Bowdon, the Booths of dunham Massey (and their successors the Earls of Stamford), the Edwards family and latterly Lord Lee of Trafford through his wife’s family who have owned the house since 1919. The life of a great house over time cannot easily be distilled into a few paragraphs in a sale catalogue but the contents of a house certainly speak for themselves and tell stories of changing tastes, fashions, old formalities and social occasions. Offered here are possessions which in many cases have not been seen on the market since the 1920s, whilst others inform us of the owner’s collecting tastes in more recent years. The contents are a good ‘country house’ mix of traditional furniture, French and English, mahogany and oak befitting of the 17th and 18th century changes in the house, fine porcelain, silver, works of art and paintings which reflect happy holidays at home and abroad and portraits and landscapes from the late Victorian and Edwardian era. As a house changes ownership after such a long time in one family there is of course, a moment to pause and a wistfulness for the past. But houses, like people, change and enter new phases in their existence and welcome new owners and fresh approaches. The sale of the contents of Bowdon Old Hall allows everyone an opportunity to possess something of the history of a passing era and to create new memories of objects enjoyed and appreciated in those still moments of reflection in the great rush of life.

ORIENTAL CERAMICS AND GLASS IMARI PORCELAIN The term ‘Imari’ has become synonymous with exotic porcelain, familiar to British connoisseurs and collectors for around two hundred years. What that word conjures is a rich profusion of dark blue, iron red and gold with splashes of acid green. It is a palette of colours born in the decorating shops of Arita (Hizen province) in Japan during the early 18th Century and exported through the nearby port of Imari, from which it takes its name. The bright, busy patterns are thought to have been influenced by Dutch traders and based on Japanese textile designs of the period. The export of this ware, in turn, influenced porcelain production in Europe and the Imari style became a mainstay throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries and beyond. The popularity of exotic porcelain became part of the fabric of fine country houses and the blousy bling of Imari in particular sat very comfortably in the oversized surroundings and grandeur of these halls, becoming almost obligatory. You’ll rarely see the inside of an English country house without it.

In the 18th century, a hunt usually met before first light. given that the start of hunting season was in winter, a stiff drink became very much customary in order to ‘stir-up’ one’s circulation. Whilst the name realistically most likely stems from the fact that the hunters’ feet are in their stirrups and ready to go, the double meaning of the name throws up its own interesting connotations and has inspired a number of works of art in both ceramic and other forms. Early 18th century stirrup cups were initially made of glass, later turning to pottery, porcelain and even silver. Whilst examples do exist with projecting ears, they more often are modelled laid back along the head in order to avoid awkward protuberances. This stirrup cup was produced by Copeland and garrett in around 1830 and is just one of a number of designs produced by the company in the form of both hound’s and foxes heads. Lot 200 Lot 200 A COPeLAND AND GARRett PORCeLAIN HOuND HeAD StIRRuP CuP, circa 1830-40, realistically modelled and painted with brown patches, 12.5cm long £150 - £250 game pie dishes were usually covered in a pastry pie crust, but ornate dishes such as this meant that pies could be created without the use of pastry. The inner liner which would have been present would have originally held the pie together allowing a cook to serve the pie without a crust. The late 18th century saw a rise in the price of flour in England due to both the early industrial revolution and the detrimental effect the napoleonic Wars had on trade. These high prices persisted well into the 19th century, forcing householders to economise. As such, a number of different potteries created their own versions of these innovative designs which can be found with decoration of ‘drab’ caneware by Wedgwood, or brightly coloured glazes such as this example by Minton. Lot 201 Lot 201 A MINtON MAJOLICA GAMe PIe DISH AND COVeR, 19th century, lacking liner, the cover typically moulded with assorted game including a hare and duck, the exterior body of the base moulded with lattice designs and oak leaves, on four feet, impressed factory mark and numbered 668, 30cm wide (chipped) £200 - £400
Lot 202 A StAFFORDSHIRe tWIN HANDLeD FROG MuG, mid-19th century, the exterior decorated with hunting dogs chasing and catching game birds, unmarked, £50 - £80 14.5cm high
The frog mug, known also as a ‘Surprise mug’ or ‘Toad mug’, was originally designed as a practical joke. The interior of the mug features a fully modelled frog which is revealed to the drinker as the liquid is consumed. The mugs were originally made in Liverpool and Sunderland, where they were much used in taverns frequented by sailors. The inspiration for this practical joke in ceramic was a more benign version of the age-old practice of slipping a live toad or frog into a fellow drinker’s beer mug when he was not looking. Initially, these ceramic frogs were solid, painted in green and brown glazes to resemble a real frog as much as possible, in order to maximize the shock to the unsuspecting drinker. Over time, the ceramic frogs were often made with hollow bodies and small openings which allowed air to pass through them. These hollow frogs would not only startle the hapless drinker when they emerged from his beer, but they would also embarrass him by making various rude noises as the liquid escaped the hollow body of the frog. Victorian scholars would have us believe that barmen kept frog mugs on hand to hurry on along those patrons who had drunk too much. As they drained their mug, the tipsy patron would be confronted by ‘’a popeyed, reproachful frog countenance’’ which was supposed to shock the inebriate and hurry him on his way home. This may have happened occasionally, but it is more likely that bar keepers kept a supply of frog mugs available to enable their patrons to play jokes on one another or unsuspecting strangers.

The ornamental and whimsical pieces most often seen described as ‘’nailsea glass’’ today, have little in common with the actual staple production of the glassworks. They are typically attributed as friggers or end-of-day pieces made by the glassworkers for sale, from the residue of the batch of glass when production was complete. The most typical pieces include glass walking sticks, rolling pins, and ornate items such as lamps and pipes, as seen in this lot.

The liquid was previously canted, or tilted out, from its original bottle or container into the decanter so that it was free from sediment. The applied prunts to this decanter first originated in the 17th century. not merely a form of decoration; it was necessary to give a good grip before the days of forks and when the majority of solid foods were greasy. Much later, roemers glasses of this style were copied in England in the early 19th century, when the glass was considerably heavier and darker. Whilst glasses roughly copying earlier designs are common enough, decanters of this form are rarer.

Hardwick was purchased in 1725 by Sir Rowland Hill, 1st Bt. (1705-1783) who in 1727 succeeded his uncle Richard Hill in the Hawkstone Estate. His widow Mary, Lady Hill (who he had married as his second wife in 1776- he, though being her third husband) lived at the grange with her third husband, Joseph Foster Barham until her death in 1789. The house was then residence to Colonel John Hill until his death in 1814. Colonel Hill’s brother Rowland Hill became the first Viscount Hill and the Hardwick Estate was bequeathed to him by his uncle Sir Richard Hill, Second Bt. The house was altered by Thomas Harrison of Chester for him. In the late 19th century Hardwick was acquired by James Jenkinson Bibby, of the Liverpool shipping family. A watercolour by Moses griffith of the 1790s in the collection of dudmaston Hall, shows the house prior to the early 19th century alterations as being of red brick, with Venetian windows in the outer base of its main front suggesting an 18th century re-working of the house. H107-086 Listing.qxp_Layout 1 22/03/2016 10:22 Page 51
wednesday 2nd march - sale report The 2nd March auction at Halls Fine Art saw one of the busiest views for some time and this was bolstered by nearly 500 people registered to bid on the day both online and in the room. There was a small but extremely attractive selection on offer bolstered by the residual contents of Linley Hall, Bishops Castle. Selected and provenanced lots from Linley were keenly pursued both by locals eager to retain memories of their association with the family and house and also national bidders impressed by the quality on offer. The top lot of the day arrived early on in the proceedings when a Bow porcelain model of The Fortune Teller by the Muses modeller and dated to 1752 was offered from the Linley Hall contents. The figure group had sustained some damage which kept the estimate down to £800/1200. This damage however, did not seem to deter potential bidders and there were six telephone lines booked for the lot. After fierce competition, the Fortune Teller changed hands for £11,000 selling to the London specialist trade bidding on the telephone. Linley Hall provenance also helped a number of other lots in the sale to ‘above estimate’ results and these included a particularly uncommon Sevres porcelain tray or ‘plateau carre’ painted with fishers and their catch by the sea in the manner of Jean-Louis Morin (active 1754-87). Although there was a tiny amount of damage to the open work Vitruvian scroll border, the tray generated enough pre-sale interest to ensure that the £250 top estimate would always be eclipsed. On the day it sold to the London trade for £3,600. Furniture and Victorian furniture specifically, has had something of a bad press in recent years in terms of its value compared to prices being paid in the 1970s and 1980s. Some pieces are especially hard to sell-monumental wardrobes and sideboards do not tend to fit into small modern houses and suffer at auction because of it. Here however, a huge Victorian carved oak pedestal sideboard attracted a great deal of interest because of its Shropshire connections. The back of the sideboard was inset with an elaborately enamelled clock, dated 1846 and the arms of Clement. William Clement was a former mayor of Shrewsbury and the MP for the town in 1865. He was best known as a surgeon performing pioneering work in his field and remembered with affection by Salopians with a memorial in the Quarry Park. Estimated at a modest £800/1200, the sideboard was hotly contested between a telephone bidder and the internet and finally sold for £5,500 to a Bristol buyer. As if to prove that furniture and clocks are still in fashion the sideboard was not the only piece to defy the gloomy headlines. A brass dial twin fusee wall clock by Arnold, London, which had come from the stables at Linley soon raced passed an estimate of £1,500/2,000 when it sold to a Shropshire buyer for £5,000. In the ‘design’ section of the sale, a set of eleven Wilkinsons character jugs modelled by Sir F Carruthers gould also found favour selling to a southern buyer for £6,000 whilst a bronze of a leopard lying on a rock by South African artist dylan Lewis found a Wrexham buyer at £5,000. Other notable results included £2,200 for a Ralph Wood Staffordshire pearlware figure of a lion, £1,800 for a pair of 19th century mahogany narrow bookcases, £1,700 for an Anthony Redmile shell mirror and £1,300 for two rare Chelsea porcelain Commedia dell Arte figures dated to 1756.
