26th February – Sale Report At just over 230 lots, the February sale was not the biggest Halls had hosted but it was certainly full of strong results in all areas from Asian Art to traditional furniture. The day started very well with the first lot, a Chinese doucai porcelain two handled vase selling for a quadruple estimate £2000 and underlining the current strength of the Chinese market. A few lots later an interesting Chinese porcelain sang de boeuf combined water dropper and brush washer also made a quadruple estimate £1100 whilst a small gilded terracotta Buddha dated to the 18th century sold for an above estimate £460.

In the Decorative Arts section, a wonderful Royal Doulton Sung flambe dish depicting a blue firebird from the 1920s outshone a £900 top estimate when it sold for £2400. From the same vendor, a Royal Doulton Charles Noke Sung flambe bowl also sold for an above estimate £1500. Moorcroft too continues to excite with a pair of floral panel design squat vases dated to 1898 realizing £2100 and a Moorcroft Pomegranate pattern three piece tea set with Tudric pewter mounts selling for a mid-estimate £480. Star of this section however was a Rene Lalique opalescent glass car mascot ‘Naiade’ no 832, introduced in 1920 and which sold for £3100. Amongst a host of four figure results elsewhere in the sale a copy of Crisijn van Passe’s Hortus Floridus showing sixty plates brought £2000 and a late 15th/early 16th century illuminated page from ‘The Opening of the Gospel Sequences’ depicting St. John of Patmos sold for £2200 against hopes of £1500/2000.

The Works of Art section saw a diminutive Ferdinand Preiss carved ivory figure of a girl reading, circa 1937 sell for £2500 swiftly followed by a bronze standing horse, after Bonheur, which sold for £1100. Top price here however, and for the sale, was an Indo-Portuguese colonial rosewood, bone and tortoiseshell veneered table cabinet dated to the early 18th century and from a local source near Welshpool. Estimated at £2000/4000, it sold to a continental dealer bidding on the internet for £5200. This was followed by £4200 tendered for a taxidermy cased bass of 15.5 pounds and caught by John Miller in Poole Harbour on 10th June 1949. It had been estimated at £500/700. Other notable results include £4000 for the front cover lot, a North European 17th/early 18th century walnut marquetry and ivory inlaid dressing box, £1800 for a pair of Empire style French bronze candelabra, £3300 for a set of 16 Hepplewhite style mahogany dining chairs, £3600 for a late Victorian painted satinwood side cabinet, £3400 for a mahogany floor standing cabinet bookcase and £2500 for a brass sundial on a Grinshill stone column.
