Asian Art 13th May – Sale Report Halls third stand-alone Asian Art auction showed a continuing strength in this field with a broad selection of Chinese, Japanese and Islamic lots giving the audience of buyers plenty to choose from. Pre-auction interest was very strong with lots of activity from overseas, particularly China and North America, and it quickly became clear which would be the key contested lots. Traditionally May has been a month for key Asian Art auctions in London and the regions, though not carrying the full weight of publicity afforded November’s ‘Asian Art Week’ in the capital, or the equivalent outing in New York in March, it nevertheless provided an excellent platform for Halls. The room was busy with both trade and private buyers, including a devoted Chinese contingent, and there was plenty of interest throughout the auction from online bidders both in the UK and overseas. Two collections of Ca Mau shipwreck porcelain kicked off and performed steadily, most lots selling online, followed by other Chinese porcelain where more lively bidding came into play. A small famille rose bowl which had much pre-sale interest achieved £550 against its £60-100 estimate, in spite of damage and repair. Monochromes, which have been lacklustre performers in the past, got their share of interest with a Song dynasty Jun Yao bowl reaching £360 and a flambé bottle vase achieving £800, both against £100-200 estimates. A Claire de Lune bottle vase carrying a Qianlong mark but catalogued as 19th Century nearly tripled its top estimate to end at £1,200. The ever popular blue and white porcelain also fared well, especially those from the early Qing dynasty including a pair of Kangxi (16621722) tea caddies which reached £850 against their £400-600 estimate, in spite of lacking covers, and a Qianlong (1736-1795) bowl painted with chickens making a quadruple estimate £420. It was the works of art section that provided the top prices of the day, though, with the best falling at the mid point. Two cinnabar lacquer pieces, intricately carved through their ‘sealing wax red’ surfaces with figures in settings amid foliate borders, were the auctions real treasures, both from the same private source in Oswestry. A Qianlong mark and period circular dish realised its low estimate £3,000 to the regional trade. But our cover lot, an ingot form box, easily broke through its £4,000-6,000 estimate to finish at £15,000 to a buyer in mainland China bidding online. While the Japanese art market has lately trailed behind Chinese, it was not immune from interest. One lot in particular, a bronze marine life platter, garnered a lot of pre-sale activity from all quarters, even though showing significant damage. The £300-500 estimate proved to be a modest expectation and bidding swiftly exceeded this before the hammer fell at £2,400. Another top price for the sale came in the jades and hardstones section where most pieces achieved prices within their estimate range. One lot, however, surprised everyone. A jadeite bead necklace estimated at £150-250 raced away with interest from the USA to achieve £2,100. Pictures and prints were also buoyant with good results for Japanese block prints and two Chinese scrolls, the latter making ten times estimate £650 and £600. The winner here, though, was a bound folio of pith paper paintings in exquisite detail, many signed by the artist Sunqua, which enjoyed a good deal of interest prior to the sale. It made £2,600 against a £200-400 estimate. Highlights in the furniture section include a rosewood twin pedestal desk which made £2,000 (estimate £700-900) and a much viewed 19th Century altar table realising £2,100 (estimate £400-600). With activity in Indian and Middle Eastern art steady and with no surprises, the auction as a whole was an encouraging third outing, showing that the appetite is still strong for good quality and unusual works, especially those that have been hidden away in private hands for many years.
