A small archive of logbooks, letters and copy paperwork relating to several generations of the Curry family, circa 1850s to early 20th century, including a journal of Captain Douglas Curry onboard HMS Alarm, 1855-59, travelling to South America, a total of approximately 60 leaves, some dampstaining, contemporary half roan, broken and disbound, small 4to; the logbook of Douglas G.W. Curry onboard HMS Irresistible, Prince George and Illustrious, 1906-07, travelling to Gibraltar and Malta, tipped in detailed charts and diagrams, a few photos, etc.; a similar logbook for Douglas Curry onboard HMS Terrible, Cressy, Centurion and Irresistible, 1904-06, including passage to and from China, many neat pen and ink and watercolour charts and diagrams, both contemporary cloth gilt, some fraying and soiling, folio; plus a group of approximately 20 mostly mid 19th-century family letters written onboard ship with typed transcriptions (plus some transcriptions with original letters no longer present), one letter from Douglas to his brother William Curry at Honolulu, Sandwich Islands, 1856, describing the exotic nature of the island and the people, ‘How astonished you would be, if you could be put down here straight from England to see the native population, they are a lazy, good natured, harmless beings and go pretty nearly naked, in fact the climate is such that clothes are not requisite. They live in grass houses some of them much not bigger than a good sized dog kennel, they are half their time in the water both men and women, you never see a deformed man and I think they are both men and women the finest I ever saw, such tall powerful men, their dark but beautiful hair not woolley like Negroes, the women never go without a wreath of flowers or green leaves round the head which look very pretty; all outside the harbour in fact all round the island are coral reefs and you see a tremendous surf breaking on it yet these natives men and women swim over it beautifully...’, plus 2 naval biography books with ownership inscriptions of the Curry family and a quantity of typed and photocopied papers relating to the Curry family and Chettle Estate, Dorset

An unused printed form, late 18th century, with a large engraved vignette by James Basire (1730-1802) after Stuart, the italic printed text beginning ‘Suffer the Ship’, framed and glazed, overall size 53.5 x 33cm In the treatise with Barbary states, it was agreed that subjects of the English King should be able to pass the sea unmolested by the cruisers of those states. All British vessels were therefore required to produce a pass signed by the Lord High Admiralty or by the Lord Commissioners of the Admiralty. (1) £200-300

639* Napoleonic Wars - Privateer Warship. Articles of Agreement between the Owner (Hannibal Curnow Blewett, Merchant of Plymouth, Devon), Commander (John Davey), Officers and Crew of the Private Ship of War, Queenborough, 12 July 1806, four-page manuscript document on vellum with cloth cross-stitches to lower margins, giving explicit details of the obligations of the owners and crew, together with a detailed breakdown of the distribution of the prize money, the final page signed and sealed by 46 of the crew members, giving their position on ship and details of share, salary and wages, some dust soiling and marks, approx. 60 x 85cm A rare and detailed document, confirming that a Letter of Marque had been obtained for a private ship of war and that the owners were to pay to fit it out for a two month cruise from Plymouth. According to this Agreement the crew consisted of 4 officers, 5 petty-officers, 29 able seamen, 3 ordinary seamen and 4 others. The owner is liable for the costs of all war-like stores, changes of clothing, sea bedding as well as advance money and wages.The crew agree to comply with orders from the owner or his agent. The details include noting that the first man on board a captured vessel is awarded 5 guineas, the protection of a departing crew on a return prize vessel and how it affects their share of profit, discussions on mutiny and its effect on shares. The ‘Queenborough’, was a Royal Navy 12-gun cutter, operating 1800-1806. Records show that she was employed on the Channel Station between 1800-01 under Lt Berry and again between 1804-05 when she captured the Vrow Elizabeth. It was one of Blewett’s larger vessels, was very successful under John Davey’s command and, along with others, took at least 16 ships into Plymouth for appraisal and condemnation. Hannibal Blewett owned several private ships of war, the Betsy and Queenborough, others noted being Happy Return, Hero, John Bull and Caesar. His ships were put up for sale between 1807-09. 640* Napoleonic Wars - Letter of Marque. For the Betsey, Charles Chant Commander, Against the Dutch, 23 June 1807, manuscript document on vellum, engraved upper border with portrait of King George III within large capital initial, large Admiralty paper seal appended with paper tag, a little spotting and dust soiling, 53 x 64cm, together with a Bill of Sale of the Sloop or Vessel Betsey of Plymouth, 29 July 1803, between Thomas Martin of Rame, Cornwall, and others, to Hannibal Curnow Blewett of Guernsey, manuscript deed on vellum, signatures and seals of the parties to lower margin, some dust-soiling and small old damp stain affecting a few words, 52 x 69cm The Sloop ‘Betsy’ was a single-decked, single-masted, sloop-rigged vessel, here authorised to engage any ships belonging to the Dutch and the Batavian Republic. It spells out in detail the terms of the Letter of Marque and gives the right to proceed against the Dutch and Batavian Republic and the types of items, goods and vessels that could be appropriated in accordance with the law. The ship was to be commanded by Commander Aaron Grant with the beneficial owners of the Betsy being John Edward Blewett and Aaron Grant Blewett of the Island of Guernsey. Information about the success of the Betsy is sketchy but there are records to show that the ships Leo and Minerva were captured in 1807-08 and that prize money was distributed by Hannibal Blewett in February 1811. Three other ships are recorded. Between 1803 and 1807 the ‘Betsy’ was placed under contract to the Admiralty and, during this period, sent in at least 14 vessels into Plymouth. A full transcription of the Letter of Marque is included with this lot. (2) £1500-2000

641* HMS Galsgow. An impressive original gangway plaque from HMS Glasgow, the substantial cast metal plaque decorated with a figure of St. Kentigon, mounted on a wooden shield with brass plaque engraved ‘Presented by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to the 9th District Council of the County of Lanark to Commemorate the Adoption of H.M.S. Glasgow during Warship Week 16th-23rd May 1942’, 80 x 59cm HMS Glasgow was built on the Clyde and was a Southampton Class Cruiser, she was the seventh Glasgow in operation. Commissioned into service in 1937, and in 1939 she escorted the King and Queen to Canada and also took a large quantity of gold to Fort Knox as an emergency reserve. During WWII she operated off the Scandinavian coast and Norway from November 1940 and on 12 February that same year she captured the German trawler Herrlichkeit off Tromso. Later on 9 April she was attacked by Ju88s and HeIII’s and damaged. Further service saw Glasgow in the Mediterranean, Suez Canal and South Africa, on 6 June 1944 she was part of Operation Neptune (The Normandy Landings) and then finally scrapped in 1958. (1) £400-600

THE AVIATION PHOTOGRAPHY ARCHIVE OF PHILIP J.R. MOYES (1928-2017) Philip J.R. Moyes was born in Darlington, Yorkshire, in 1928. Philip attended school in York and went on to complete National Service at an RAF station just outside the city at Linton-on-Ouse. As a teenager, during the war years of 1939-1945, he developed a keen interest in aeroplanes, particularly the fighter and bomber squadrons of the RAF based at an airfield at Linton-on-Ouse, where he spent a lot of his free time aircraftspotting. For the rest of his life Philip’s life was to revolve around the world of aviation, whether building his superb collection of aviation photographs offered here or using his expert knowledge to write about the subject professionally. Prior to embarking on his writing career, he was employed at SBAC (Society of British Aircraft Constructors) in London and at the Bristol Aircraft Corporation base in Bristol in the 1950s. While working at SBAC he became involved in the setting up and running of the press information for the Farnborough Air Show. This period gave Philip a golden opportunity to make many important contacts in the aviation field and through them he was able to obtain photographs both directly from the aircraft manufacturers of the time and aviation enthusiasts’ private collections. During his lunch-breaks at SBAC, Philip used to walk across the road into the Air Ministry and research information for a book that he wanted to write documenting the history of the 'Bomber Squadrons of the RAF', which took him over four years to compile and was finally published in 1964. The book was a huge success and in the following years Philip increased his writing output both in the aviation book and magazine areas, even conceiving, founding and editing the popular magazine ‘Aircraft Illustrated’. In his later years, he continued to contribute written articles, photographic and archive materials to a plethora of aviation publications and writers while further building his own extensive personal aviation collection. The photographs offered here are all meticulously gathered in folders labelled by aircraft type and comprise vintage and non-vintage mostly black and white photographs. Many images feature single aircraft (air and ground), but there are also multiple aircraft shots, close-ups of aircraft interiors and some featuring aircraft personnel. Many have ink stamp credits to versos including manufacturer names, photographer stamps (e.g. Charles E. Brown), press photo caption labels and production mark-ups. Air Marshall Sir Harold Brownlow Morgan “Micky” Martin, KCB, DSO & BAR, DFC & 2 Bars, AFC (1918-1988), was an Australian bomber pilot and senior commander in the Royal Air Force. 783 Log Books. Two comprehensive Pilot’s Flying Log books kept by Air Commodore F.E. Vernon, Royal Air Force, log book 1 commencing 15 September 1930, last entry 29 March 1933, log book 2 commencing 3 March 1934, last entry 8 December 1949 Air Commodore Frederick Edward Vernon, C.B., O.B.E. (1899-1963) was born in London. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the East Surrey Regiment in 1918 and in the same year was accepted into the Aeroplane and Seaplane Branch. On 11 December 1923 Vernon was with 461 Squadron flying Dart (N9548) when his starboard wing hit a crane whilst he was avoiding a hanger near Gosport. He also experimented with landing on Aircraft Carriers such as HMS Glorious. Vernon rose through the ranks and reached the rank of Wing Commander in 1939. His WWII service saw him service as Engineer Staff Officer at HQ RAF Middle East. (2) £200-300

786* Mason (Frederick Howard, 1901-1930). A complete and well-organised archive relating to the life and career of Imperial Airways mechanic Fred Howard Mason, beginning with letters home written in 1917, 149499 Boy Section, Tent 24, Royal Flying Corps., South Farnborough, Hampshire, and continuing with letters to his family beginning May 1918, written while at E.R.S. No. 3 Camp, R.A.F. 2(N)ARD, Green Hill, Sheffield, some in blue pencil, addressed to his family in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, a printed Royal Air Force form of application for Mason passing him medically fit for pilot or observer, dated 16 November 1918, by 1919 with a testimonial for his mechanical wherewithal based on his experience in the Test Flight Despatch Section at R.A.F. Norton, Sheffield, Mason went to the Marconi School of Wireless (Chelmsford College) and was then to continue as a mechanic with Imperial Airways, the archive including photographs (some photographs by and featuring Mason himself), real photo postcards, postcards and letters, the correspondence continuing partly beyond Mason's death with related correspondence to his daughter, etc. Fred Howard Mason died tragically aged only 29 while working as a mechanic for Imperial Airways. He was on board a Handley Page W8g GEBIX "City of Washington" when it stalled and crashed in fog after engine fire at Neufchatel, Boulogne, France. Three others died in the incident, one of the two escaping with injuries being the pilot John Joseph Flynn. A comprehensive and fascinating archive that includes 11 folders of letters, correspondence, telegrams, flight documents and ephemera, 6 photograph albums, an aviation postcard album, plus 2 further modern folders with photographs and postcards, plus a large quantity of mostly loose smaller format photographs, postcards and glass plate negatives and film negatives; plus 2 maps and 2 small pairs of round glasses, one pair with clip-on sunglasses. A rare cushion commemorating the 1927 Trans-Atlantic flight undertaken by Charles Nungesser and Francois Coli, stitched in wool with bi-plane with question mark to the fuselage beneath and communication tower and profile images of the two pilots above the Eifel Tower and Statue of Liberty, filled with feathers and silk lining, 65cm long Charles Eugene Jules Marie Nungesser, MC (1892-1927), was a French ace pilot and adventurer. He is best known for rivalling Charles Lindbergh. He was a renowned ace in France during WWI, ranking third highest in the country with 43 air combat victories. After the war Nungesser disappeared mysteriously on an attempt to make the first nonstop transatlantic flight from Paris to New York. Nungesser took set off from Paris on 8 May 1927 in L’Oiseau (White Bird) with his old wartime comrade Francois Coli. The aircraft was sighted over Ireland and then never seen again. (1) £100-150

An early 20th century papier mache bust of the famous pioneer aviator Alberto SantosDumont, modelled in flying jacket, helmet and goggles on integral base with his name in large capitals, 28cm high x 24cm wide Alberto Santos-Dumont (1873-1932), was a Brazilian aviation pioneer and dedicated himself to aeronautical study and experimentation in Paris. In his early career he designed, built, and flew hot air balloons and early dirigible and in 1901 he won the Deutsch de la Meurthe prize a flight that rounded the Eiffel Tower. In 1906 his 14-bis made the first powered heavier-than-air flight in Europe to be certified by the Aero club de France and the Federatrion Aeronautique Internationale. 828 WWII. WWII Lysander pilot logbook kept by Sergeant R.A. Brown, Royal Air Force, commencing 16 October 1940, training exercises (Whitley, Hector), 22 November, 225 Squadron (Lysander), 29 December (bombing), 4 May 1942, 78 Squadron (Whitley, Defiant), last entry 22 June 1942, a card inscribed “I love you darling with all my heart, Reg” is included at the rear of the logbook with the caption ‘poor old Reg lasted 3 weeks on ops with 78 Sqdn & then had his head blown off by a Mosquito in an attack on “SHWERIN” A/F in April 1945’, the logbook has been inscribed and embellished at some stage by an aviation enthusiast, together with 31 card maps from the “Wonderful Britain” series in card folder inscribed ‘F/O Coombes, 16 Sqdn, Weston 20 years’, ‘These maps were used by ‘F/O Coombes when flying Lysander of 16 Sqn in the West Country 1940’ Sergeant Reginald Alfred Brown was shot down whilst serving in Halifax II W1067, he and a crew of 5 from 78 Squadron were on an operation over Bremen on 25 June 1942 when the aircraft was shot down by night fighter (Uffz Heinz Vinke, II. NJG2) and crashed at 0042 into the IJsseelmeer. Flying Officer J.A. Whittingham and Sergeant H. Dronfield were both killed and the rest of the crew including Sergeant Brown were taken prisoner of war. Brown was later killed in a bombing raid by allied forces whilst in a POW camp in Shwerin on 22 April 1942. The Westland Lysander (AKA “Lizzie”) was used from 1938-1946 and due to its exceptional short field performance it was used for clandestine missions using small unprepared airstrips behind enemy lines to place or recover agents (particularly in France). Coaling, From the Line, Monday, 17 August 1915, written in pencil and addressed to Sam, thanking him for the letter and papers, ‘We are not allowed to say much about the war in our letters in case they get into spy’s hands. We are having a gruelling time being well above our knees in mud and water in the trenches for 8 hrs at a stretch The sights we see would be enough to turn anyone’s heart up. Dead bodies all over the place. When digging in the trenches it is nothing to chop a dead body in half. We come across legs, arms, heads and all manner of things buried We have been moved up and down the line being used mostly as an auxiliary Division. The Germans seem to be pushing the Russians back I expect they will be trying it on us next. The Scotch are making a name for themselves out here. The Germans are terrified when they see the Scotch advancing As I am writing this letter shells are coming over to within 100 yards of where I am sitting. I had a near shave yesterday. A shell burst a few yards away from me killing and wounding 2 men. Two or three minutes after another shell made a terrible mess of a poor chap. And the cyclists have had a very hard time although they have not been able to do their proper work since the retreat of Mons. We have been doing infantry work, engineering, sapping, Intelligence Corps work and artillery work and it is as the General of the Division said, 1 cyclist is equal to 10 infantrymen. Harbutt, A.R.P.S, comprising an album titled Bath April 1942 enclosing 34 black & white snapshot photographs plus 18 larger photographs mostly 10 x 8ins, many stamped on the reverse ‘Major Noel C Harbutt A.R.P.S., Bathampton, Som’ with copyright numbers, all showing ruins in and around Bath, daily life in the aftermath of the raids etc, with correspondence addressed from the Bath Civil Defence dated 1953 addressed to Mr P.J. Harbutt, Harbutt’s Plasticine Ltd, Bathampton, Bath, a manuscript letter dated 30 April 1942 giving an eyewitness account after the raids plus four related booklets including two for The Bombardment of Bath Major Noel C. Harbutt, A.R.P.S. was the official photographer for the Bombardment of Bath which took place from 25-27 April 1942 and caused substantial damage to the city. Many of the photographs included in the lot were published in the well-known paperback publication The Bombardment of Bath and according to the letters included in this lot his photographs and album were exhibited in 1953 by the Bath Civil Defence. 882* Keep Calm and Carry On. [London: Ministry of Information, 1939], lithographic poster, printed in red with white text, surmounted by a crown device, some overall creasing and bruising, closed tears to upper margin with clear tape repairs to verso, 75 x 50.5cm (29.5 x 20 ins) This now iconic design was one of four designs created by a team in the spring and early summer of 1939, which was selected to be printed up in preparation for the expected war. The other three designs were widely distributed and put to use in late 1939, but this one was retained for special use. It is estimated that over 2.5 million of the posters were printed and held in storage while awaiting sanction for public display. A few were possibly erroneously put out on the streets but the majority remained in the warehouse until April 1940 when they were pulped as part of the Paper Salvage campaign. The Ministry of Information campaign was viewed as a failure, questions having been raised in the press and in government about content and style of the campaign. The poster remained forgotten until 2000 when Barter Books in Alnwick found an example of this median size poster, since when a cache of five were discovered in the Midlands and a further fifteen found in Cupar, Fife, Scotland. Examples are held in the Imperial War Museum, London, and the British National Archives. It is estimated that about 22 small-sized originals of this poster (38 x 25.5cm) are in existence, and originals of both sizes are undoubtedly rare. Provenance: Given to the current owner by a friend in West Lothian, Scotland, in 1986. (1) £1000-1500

A small archive of papers, letters and postcards relating to Leslie Bert Kendall, Private in the 5th Southern Company Non-Combatant Corps, circa 1916-19, including six reference letters for Kendall, a Christadelphian from Birmingham, saying that he is of good moral character and morally eligible to be a conscientious objector, a discharge certificate completed in ink, a protection and identity certificate, a signed copy of undertaking, five leaves of tribunal papers in respect of Kendall disobeying a military order to put on uniform at Norton Barracks on account of his Christadelphian beliefs, plus a group of 36 mostly real photo postcards of prisoners and scenes at Wakefield Prison and Work Centre, Dartmoor, including some small-format postcards, most with Kendall’s pencil captions and details to versos, e.g. ‘Our home dear. Each window a cell. Trout and other fish galore in streams. We can roam anywhere on these lovely fields. Don’t you think we are well off. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor visited Germany in October 1937, against the advice of the British government, and met Adolf Hitler at his Berghof retreat in Bavaria, where the Duke gave full Nazi salutes. On 30 September 1938, the British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in a failed act of appeasement toward Germany was a signatory of the Munich Agreement, making his infamous ‘Peace for our time’ declaration upon returning to England. His effusions in the press on his return, of a peace-loving Germany, determined never again to go to war with Britain, are an embarrassment to his admirers. Of all Hitler’s British visitors, Churchill said ‘no one was more completely misled than Mr Lloyd George’. This signed presentation photograph, a memento of that infamous meeting, is undoubtedly one of the most historically poignant and significant presentation photographs of Hitler to ever come up for sale, yoking together Britain’s Great War-time premier on the one part with the Führer of Nazi Germany on the other. Lloyd George had a one-to-one policy meeting with Hitler on the afternoon of 4 September, in the Führer’s office at his villa, the Berghof. The following afternoon the entire British party of six joined Hitler in the Great Hall there for a social gathering and tea. It was then that this photograph was presented. Printed below are account extracts of the occasion written by two of those also present, A.J. Sylvester, Lloyd George’s private secretary, and Thomas Jones, a close associate of the then prime minister Stanley Baldwin. ‘It was probably half-past five when we sat down in a large circle of low and easy chairs for tea and coffee and slices of cold ham and halves of hard-boiled eggs … For some time the talk rambled over presentation of ancient buildings … At this point a signed photograph of the Führer was produced, in a case, and handed by him to L.G. who responded with the hope that Hitler would not object to share a table in L.G.’s house with photographs of Foch and President Wilson. From this point on the talk became more serious and impressive … Hitler spoke with a grave and sincere animation. Germany had lost the war [First World War], that had happened to nations before … It was realized in Germany that if the war was won by the Allies, it was not due to the soldiers but to one great statesman – Lloyd George … Lloyd George, speaking with a tear in his throat, was deeply touched by the personal tribute of the Führer and was proud to hear it paid to him by the greatest German of the age …’ Thomas Jones, A Diary with Letters, 1931–1950 (1954), pp. 248-52. Max Henze was born in Koethen, Germany on 23 September 1899. He volunteered for service in World War I. As a member of the NSDAP and SS, he was a full-time SS leader in Berlin-Brandenburg. In 1935 he was appointed police chief of Kassel. In October 1939 he became police chief of Bromberg and on 1 April 1940 of Danzig and, finally, from November 1941 in Essen. After his capture in 1945 he was interned by the British in Racklinghausen and Hamburg, being given a death sentence on 4 November 1949. Göring, Frick and Keitel were three of the nineteen Nazis convicted and hanged following the Nuremberg Trials in 1946. Himmler had committed suicide after his capture in 1945. (7) £3000-5000

An Edwardian lapel badge for the 1908 Ascot Royal Enclosure worn by General Sir James Lowthorpe Haldane, the circular pressed metal badge with paper label and inscribed in ink ‘Colonel Aylmer Haldane DSO’, the reverse with ticket details and number L539, 50mm diameter General Sir James Ayler Lowthorpe Haldane (1862-1950) was commissioned as an officer with the Gordon Highlanders in 1886,-1886, he served in Waziristan from 1894-95, and the Boer War where he was taken prisoner of war alongside Sir Winston Churchill. Haldane escaped from the camp after Churchill and returned to the UK to resume service and then taking on a post in Japan in 1904 modernising the Japanese Army. WWI service saw him commanding the 3rd Division British Expeditionary Force and 6th Army Group, he was also General Officer Commanding Mesopotamia from 1920-22. (1) £70-100

NICKALLS 17TH LANCERS No1, the hinged lid enclosing four lift out trays with divisions for a tea service, condiments, flatware and other table items, lined with green baize and marbled paper, 64cm high x 80.5cm wide x 55.5cm deep, see Lot 973 Brigadier-General Norman T Nickalls (1864-1915), educated at Eton College, served during the Boer War with 17th Lancers and also Tarkastad Mounted Troops, mentioned in despatches 17 January 1902. Nickalls commanded 21st Division K3 New Army formation at the outbreak of WWI and took a brigade into the cauldron of Loos on 25 September 1915. The Brigade diary states that an officer of the West Yorks, Major Bulloch, saw a shell hit near or directly where Nickalls was near the Chalk Pit the next day on the 26th. Major-General Dr Walter Robert Dornberger (1895-1980) was a German Artillery Officer whose career spanned both WWI and WWII. Dornberger was a leader of the V-2 rocket program and other projects at the Peenemunde Army Research Centre. The jacket was reputedly sold in Germany by a lady who claimed her grandfather was the famous Luftwaffe fighter ace Adolf Galland, and that at one time Dornberger had lived next to Galland. 982* Great War. A Great War Memorial plaque to Lieutenant R.N. Cresswell, Royal Air Force Late Royal Flying Corps, shot down over Le Cateau, 23 October 1918 Bronze Memorial Plaque (Ralph Neal Cresswell), presented in a contemporary oak frame, sold with copied research Lieutenant Ralph Neal Cresswell (1898-1918), was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, he joined the Royal Flying Corps as a Cadet on 6 June 1917 and commissioned Lieutenant in October that year. Cresswell was posted to No.92 Fighter Squadron and served as a pilot, later transferring to No.6 Reconnaissance Squadron in 1918. On 23 October 1918 whilst flying aircraft R.E.8 No.F-6279 Cresswell was shot down by Lieutenant Hans Boes of Jasta 34b Squadron. An account recorded by his Observer was later published in “Tommy Goes to War”, he recounts “I had already made two flights over the enemy’s lines that day - bombing strafing - and taking photographs, and had retired to my tent for rest; when the Squadron Commander lifted the tent flap and said “Silk - you will have to go up again - the Huns are withdrawing their guns on the Le Cateau Road and I want you to blast the lot”. Feeling apprehensive I remarked:-”I feel I shall not return this time” “come come” he said - “Your Guardian Angel will still look after you” He then gave me a gentle pat. “But who is going to be my pilot?”- I asked. “Cresswell the new fellow” he answered. I shook hands with him and rushed off to the waiting machine. Over the Lines a number of enemy Fokker machines swooped out of the sun upon four “R.E.8.” machines - The air was full of wings and bullets, when my machine gave a lurch, I turned my head to my pilot , he had slumped over the controls - mortally wounded. Next I had a gun-shot wound to the head. The machine went into a spin and finally crashed upon some trees near Le Cateau - I can faintly remember being lowered to the ground, then passed out.”Lieutenant Ralph Silk was taken prisoner of war and Cresswell is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France. Notts: & Derby: R.), British War and Victory Medals (1367 Pte. T. Spinks. Notts. & Derby.R.), extremely fine with Bronze Memorial Plaque (Thomas Spinks) in card envelope, together with two related badges plus a rolled gold pendant encompassing a photograph of the recipient in traditional Scottish dress plus six sweetheart postcards
2nd Lieutenant Frederick Willis King (1892-1918), was born in Battersea, London, he served during the Great War as a despatch rider in the Royal Engineers, and was commissioned December 1917 transferring to 3rd Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. In October 1917 he passed fit for Pilot Duty and served with the Royal Flying Corps from March 1918, he was posted as to 40 Squadron. On 17 September 1918 the Squadron was tasked with offensive patrols and low level attacks, King flying S.E.5a was last seen South of Cambrai and listed missing on the same day. King was listed as “Died November 1918” but was repatriated a month later, he was discharged from service in March 1919. (2) £80-120
265054 Lance Corporal Thomas Edgar Spinks (1897-1917), was born in St Ann’s Well Road, Nottingham and served during the Great War with 1st/7th Bn., Sherwood Foresters killed in action 24 April 1917, a newspaper cutting included in the lot records ‘Spinks killed by shell on 24th April - Lance Corporal Thomas Edgar Spinks Sherwood Foresters , beloved son of Sarah and the late Frank Spinks, step-son of Mr. William Allen of No.272 St. Ann’s Well Road (Nottingham). He bravely answered Duty’s Call - sadly missed by his sorrowing Mother, Father, Sisters and Brother Lawrence who was wounded and in Netley Hospital at the time, and his fiancée Gladys. Spinks is commemorated in the Canadian Cemetery No.2., Neuville-St. Vaast, France. (a small box) £200-300

Although the medal appears to be entirely as issued, the recipient is not on the published transcript roll. However there is a reference to an Ensign Thomas Crawley of the 59th (2nd Nottingham) Regiment of Foot in Note’s on Wellingtons Peninsular Regiments by Ray Foster. It would appear that Crawley was wounded six days before the 31st August 1813 when the regiment and the British Army suffered heavy casualties storming the walls of St Sebastian. A unique and unusually interesting miniature ‘Basuto Gun War’ VC group attributed to Surgeon Major (later Colonel) Edmund Baron Hartley, VC, CMG Victoria Cross,The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael & St George (CMG), Companion’s breast badge, gold and enamel with riband buckle,Badge of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, South Africa 1877-79, one clasp, 1877-8-9, Cape of Good Hope General Service, 1880-97, three clasps, Transkei, Basutoland, Bechuanaland, Queen’s South Africa 18991902, three clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, King’s South Africa, 1901-02, two dated clasps, mounted for wearing, QSA suspension post slightly offset but generally extremely fine; together with corresponding riband bar for the full size medals Provenance: A Kent estate Colonel Edmund Baron Hartley, VC, CMG (1847-1919) was born in Ivybridge, Devon, and served with Cape Mounted Rifles from 1877-1902. Hartley was 32 years of age at the time of the so-called Basuto Gun War and won his VC for the following action:-’On 5 June 1879 in South Africa, Surgeon Major Hartley attended the wounded under fire at the unsuccessful attack at Morosi’s Mountain, Basutoland. From an exposed position, on open ground, he carried in his arms a wounded corporal of the Cape Mounted Riflemen. The surgeon major then returned under severe enemy fire in order to dress the wounds of other men of the storming party’Hartley was presented with his VC in 1881 after it had taken some time to be approved. The regiment’s commanding officer was under the impression that Colonial Troops were not entitled to the VC. Hartley’s full size group is displayed in the Royal Army Medical Services Museum in Surrey, having been purchased by the regiment at a Sotheby’s Auction in 1955 at the then record price of £300 There were 13 recipients of the Cape of Good Hope General Service medal to qualify for all three bars, of which Hartley was the unique VC winner. INFORMATION FOR BUYERS AFTER THE AUCTION Online Results: If you weren’t present or able to follow the auction live, you can find results for the sale on our website shortly after the sale has ended. Payment: The price you pay is the amount at which the auctioneer’s hammer falls (the hammer price), plus a buyer’s premium (a percentage of the final hammer price) and vat where applicable. You will be issued with an invoice made out to the name and address provided on your registration form. Please note successful bids made via live bidding cannot be invoiced or paid for until the day after an auction. A live bidding fee of 3% + vat will be added to your invoice.
METHODS OF PAYMENT Cheque: Cheques will only be accepted on the day of the sale by prior arrangement (please contact our office for further information). Cheques by post will be accepted but a period of 5 working days will be required for the cheque to clear before purchases can be collected or posted. Cash: Payments can be made at the Cashier’s Office, either during or after the sale. Debit Card: There is no additional charge for purchases made with debit cards in the UK. All card payments drawn on an overseas bank, however, will be subject to a 2% surcharge. Credit Cards: We accept Visa and Mastercard, to which a 2% surcharge will apply. It is advisable to let your card provider know in advance if you are intending to purchase. This reduces the time needed to obtain authorisation when the payment is made. Bank Transfer: All transfers must state the relevant invoice number. If transferring from a foreign currency, the amount we receive must be the total due after the currency conversion and the deduction of any bank charges. Note to Overseas Clients: All payments must be made by bank transfer only. No card payments will be accepted unless by special prior arrangements with the auctioneers. Collection/Postage/Delivery: If you attend the auction in person and are successful in your bid, you are free to collect your item once payment has been made. ARTIST'S RESALE RIGHT LAW ("DROIT DE SUITE") Lots marked with AR next to the lot number may be subject to Droit de Suite. Droit de Suite is payable on the hammer price of any artwork sold in the lifetime of the artist, or within 70 years of the artist's death. The buyer agrees to pay Dominic Winter Auctioneers Ltd. an amount equal to the resale royalty and we will pay such amount to the artist's collecting agent. Resale royalty applies where the Hammer price is 1,000 Euros or more and the amount cannot be more than 12,500 Euros per lot. CONDITIONS OF SALE AND BUSINESS 1. The Seller warrants to the Auctioneer and the buyer that he is the true owner or is properly authorised to sell the property by the true owner and is able to transfer good and marketable title to the property free from any third party claims. 2. (a) The highest bidder to be the buyer. If during the auction the Auctioneer considers that a dispute has arisen he has absolute authority to settle it or re-offer the lot. The Auctioneer may at his sole discretion determine the advance of bidding or refuse a bid, divide any lot, combine any two or more lots or withdraw any lot without prior notice. (b) Where goods are bought at auction by a buyer who has entered into an agreement with another or others that the other or others (or some of them) shall abstain from bidding for the goods and the buyer or other party or one of the other parties is a dealer (as defined in the Auction Biddings Agreement Act 1927) the buyer warrants that the goods are bought bona fide on joint account. 3. The buyer shall pay the price at which a lot is knocked down by the Auctioneer to the buyer (“the hammer price”) together with a premium of 19.5% of the hammer price. Where the lot is marked by an asterisk the premium will be subject to VAT at 23.40% which under the Auctioneer’s Margin Scheme will form part of the buyer’s premium on our invoice and will not be separately identified (the premium added to the hammer price will hereafter collectively be referred to as “the total sum due”). By making any bid the buyer acknowledges that his attention has been drawn to the fact that on the sale of any lot the Auctioneer will receive from the seller commission at its usual rates in addition to the said premium of 19.5% and assents to the Auctioneer receiving the said commission. 4. (a) The buyer shall forthwith upon the purchase give in his name and permanent address and pay to the Auctioneer immediately after the conclusion of the auction the total sum due. (b) The buyer may be required to pay down during the course of the sale the whole or any part of the total sum due, and if he fails to do so after such request the lot or lots may at the Auctioneer's absolute discretion be put up again and resold immediately. (c) The buyer shall at his own expense take away any lot or lots purchased no later than five working days after the auction day. (d) The Auctioneer may at his own discretion agree credit terms with a buyer and extend the time limits for collection in special cases but otherwise payment shall be deemed to have been made only after the Auctioneer has received cash or a sterling banker’s draft or the buyer's cheque has been cleared. 5. (a) If the buyer fails to pay for or take away any lot or lots pursuant to clause 4 or breaches any other condition of that clause the Auctioneer as agent for the seller shall be entitled after consultation with the seller to exercise one or other of the following rights: (i) Rescind the sale of that or any other lots sold to the buyer who defaults and re-sell the lot or lots whereupon the defaulting buyer shall pay to the Auctioneer any shortfall between the proceeds of that sale after deduction of costs of re-sale and the total sum due. Any surplus shall belong to the seller. (ii) Proceed for damages for breach of contract. (b) Without prejudice to the Auctioneer's rights hereunder if any lots or lots are not collected within five days or such longer period as the Auctioneer may have agreed otherwise, the Auctioneer may charge the buyer a storage charge of £1.00 + VAT at the current rate per lot per day. (c) Ownership of the lot purchased shall not pass to the buyer until he has paid to the Auctioneer the total sum due. 6. (a) The seller shall be entitled to place a reserve on any lot and the Auctioneer shall have the right to bid on behalf of the seller for any lot on which a reserve has been placed. A seller may not bid on any lot on which a reserve has been placed. (b) Where any lot fails to sell, the Auctioneer shall notify the seller accordingly. The seller shall make arrangements either to re-offer the lot for sale or to collect the lot and may be asked to pay a commission not exceeding 50% of the selling commission and any special expenses incurred in cataloguing the lot. (c) If such arrangements are not made within seven days of the notification the Auctioneer is empowered to sell the lot by auction or by private treaty at not less than the reserve price and to receive from the seller the normal selling commission and special expenses.
7. Any representation or statement by the Auctioneer in any catalogue, brochure or advertisement of forthcoming sales as to authorship, attribution, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance, condition or estimated selling price is a statement of opinion only. Every person interested should exercise and rely on his own judgement as to such matters and neither the Auctioneer nor his servants or agents are responsible for the correctness of such opinions. No warranty whatsoever is given by the Auctioneer or the seller in respect of any lot and any express or implied warranties are hereby excluded. 8. (a) Notwithstanding any other terms of these conditions, if within fourteen days of the sale the Auctioneer has received from the buyer of any lot notice in writing that in his view the lot is a deliberate forgery and within fourteen days after such notification the buyer returns the same to the Auctioneer in the same condition as at the time of the sale and satisfies the Auctioneer that considered in the light of the entry in the catalogue the lot is a deliberate forgery then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price of the same refunded. "A deliberate forgery" means a lot made with intention to deceive. (b) A buyer's claim under this condition shall be limited to any amount paid to the Auctioneer for the lot and for the purpose of this condition the buyer shall be the person to whom the original invoice was made out by the Auctioneer. 9. Lots may be removed during the sale after full settlement in accordance with 4(d) hereof. 10. All goods delivered to the Auctioneer's premises will be deemed to be delivered for sale by auction unless otherwise stated in writing and will be catalogued and sold at the Auctioneer's discretion and accepted by the Auctioneer subject to all these conditions. In the case of miscellaneous books, the Auctioneer reserves the right to extract and dispose of books that, in the opinion of the Auctioneer at his absolute discretion, have no saleable value and, therefore, might detract from the saleability of the rest of the lot and the Auctioneer shall incur no liability to the seller, in respect of the books disposed of. By delivering the goods to theAuctioneer for inclusion in his auction sales each seller acknowledges that he/she accepts and agrees to all the conditions. 11. (a) Unless otherwise instructed in writing all goods on the Auctioneer's premises and in their custody will be held insured against the risks of fire, burglary, water damage and accidental breakage or damage. The value of the goods so covered will be the hammer price, or in the case of unsold lots the lower estimate, or in the case of loss or damage prior to the sale that which the specialised staff of the Auctioneer shall in their absolute discretion estimate to be the auction value of such goods. (b) The Auctioneer shall not be responsible for damage to or the loss, theft, or destruction of any goods not so insured because of the owner’s written instructions. 12. The Auctioneer shall remit the proceeds of the sale to the seller thirty days after the day of the auction provided that the Auctioneer has received the total sum due from the buyer. In all other cases the Auctioneer will remit the proceeds of the sale to the seller within seven days of the receipt by the Auctioneer of the total sum due. The Auctioneer will not be deemed to have received the total sum due until after any cheque delivered by the buyer has been cleared. In the event of the Auctioneer exercising his right to rescind the sale his obligation to the seller hereunder lapses. 13. In the case of the seller withdrawing instructions to the Auctioneer to sell any lot or lots, the Auctioneer may charge a fee of 12.5% of the Auctioneer's middle estimate of the auction price of the lot withdrawn together with Value Added Tax thereon and any expenses incurred in respect of the lot or lots. 14. The Auctioneer’s current standard notices and information (i.e. Collation and Amendments) will apply to any contract with the Auctioneer as if incorporated herein. 15. These conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with English Law.
