Dear Supporter, On behalf of The Prince’s Trust South West, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to this fantastic art collection. All of these wonderful pieces have been generously donated for our third Evening of Art Auction by some of the country’s most renowned artists. We are hugely grateful to them for making this event possible. This auction gives you the chance to acquire some truly outstanding art. With your help we would like to raise £75,000 for disadvantaged young people in the South West. I would like to thank our sponsors and supporters Coutts & Co, Withy King, Reside Bath, Pritchards, Matthew Clark and The Roper Family Trust. As a result of their contribution, all of the money raised from this event will go straight towards changing the lives of young people. We are also grateful to iBid who will be facilitating the silent auction technology, and to Paul Martin for hosting the live auction. Today’s economic environment remains challenging for the young people that we support. They face multiple barriers and find it hard to compete for opportunities. It is estimated that there are nearly 60,000 unemployed 16 to 24 year-olds in the region. This level of unemployment triggers many other problems including crime, anti social behaviour and mental health issues, and is a huge waste of human potential. The Prince’s Trust works with around 3,500 disadvantaged young people in the area every year. We help them to develop the confidence, skills and motivation they need to move forward with their lives. Three-quarters of our young people progress into a job, selfemployment or training as a result of our support. You can be part of helping more young people by participating in this auction. This year, all pieces will be available online ahead of the event via www.eveningofartauction.com. The artwork will also be exhibited at the Evening of Art Auction where guests can bid using the silent auction technology or by participating in the exciting live auction. We could not have held this evening without the help of our wonderful committee, led by Jenny Bower, and the other volunteers who have worked so hard over the last year to help plan this event. Once again, my most sincere thanks to the artists for their wonderful artwork, and to you for your invaluable support.

Lot 2 Annie Ovenden (British, b. 1945) Lanhydrock Park in Winter, 2013 Oil on canvas Signed bottom left 400 x 500mm Provenance: Donated by the Artist to The Prince’s Trust Evening of Art £3,000 - £5,000

Annie Ovenden is a figurative fine artist and a member of Sir Peter Blake’s Brotherhood of Ruralists. Despite Channel 4’s repeated showings of a film about her Village Portrait Project, Annie is probably best known for her tree studies and paintings depicting the landscape of Cornwall where she lives. In 1975 Sir Peter Blake asked Annie to join a group of seven like minded artists, subsequently called The Brotherhood of Ruralists. The Ruralists’ first public showing as a unified entity took place at the Royal Academy in 1976 followed by an exhibition at the Bath Festival in 1977. From these showings until 2007 The Ruralists maintained a vigorous exhibition program. In 1981 a major exhibition of work by The Ruralists - presented, not so much as a retrospective, but more as a report on work-in-progress - was organised by The Arnolfini, Bristol and The Camden Arts Centre, London. Funded by The Arts Council of Great Britain, the exhibition included visits to Birmingham City Museum & The Third Eye, Glasgow. The Ruralists final show together was at Horsham Museum in 2007. In 2008, a major touring exhibition was organised by Southampton University on the English Pastoral Tradition subtitled From Samuel Palmer to The Ruralists. Annie has built up an international reputation for her landscape paintings and drawings. Her work has been included in solo, group and museum exhibitions throughout Britain and is in several important collections worldwide. She is represented by Catto Gallery, Hampstead; Clerkenwell Fine Art, London and Castle Cary; Red Rag, Bath and Twenty-Twenty, Much Wenlock. Lanhydrock Park in Winter is a stunning representative of Annie’s tree studies of Cornwall where she lives. Please visit the artist’s website at annieovenden.yolasite.com 11

Lot 11 Sonya Rothwell (b. 1975) Luminous Moon, 2015 Oil and iridescent pigment on canvas 800 x 800mm Provenance: Donated by the Artist to The Prince’s Trust Evening of Art £1,000 - £1,500 Sonya Rothwell studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art. She recently returned to England and set up residence in The Courts, a National Trust property in Wiltshire. Within The Courts Garden is Gallery Beautiful which Sonya opened for art lovers of alchemy. Sonya can often be seen in her studio live painting in front of a crowd. Sonya believes art is born of alchemy. She steps far enough away from herself into ‘the flow’ – a calm, intensely focused meditative state – to allow a new dance to begin. The creation process of Sonya’s huge radiant pieces is physical. Working on the floor with her hands, she encourages melding pools of luminous colour to alchemically paint themselves. Luminous Moon embodies Rothwell’s creativity, freshness and magic. Find out more about Sonya at gallerybeautiful.com and sonyarothwell.com

Lot 12 Simon Kenny (Irish b. 1976) The New Dawn, 2015 Mixed Medium Signed on the front and reverse 1220 x 920mm Provenance: Donated by the Artist to The Prince’s Trust Evening of Art £2,500 - £3,500 Simon Kenny was born in 1976 in Dublin, Ireland, and discovered his love of art at a young age. Following his natural artistic instinct he acquired techniques and preferences which he relates through his work. His personality is a big part of his work, and as he starts on a new painting he embarks on a personal journey through a host of emotions, all carefully considered and expressed through colour and form, offering the viewer a direct visual connection to his mind set. Simon is a multi-award winning artist, celebrated nationally and internationally for his vibrant, expressive paintings. His work is praised as being dramatic, atmospheric and captivating with a style best described as ‘lyrical abstraction’. His technique encompasses brush and palette knife work, subtle under-painting and graduating alterations in colour. Characterised as a ‘radical Turner’, in recent press coverage he has attracted significant attention for his growing collection of colour burst oil paintings. Simon’s fascination with the world around him clearly manifests itself through his work, yet no piece is ever site specific. His aim is for the viewer to connect personally with each composition - to be reminded of a place they once knew, or visited by an unexpected moment of emotion. The New Dawn is an abstract expressionist painting in mixed media reflecting the vibrancy, drive and passion of the young mind. Simon painted the piece especially for The Prince’s Trust Evening of Art. To find out more about Simon visit simonkenny.artweb.com 21

Coquet Island captures the storms crashing on the beach with the Coquet Island lighthouse in the distance. Paul’s work can be viewed on his website p-west.co.uk

Lot 14 Paul Robinson (British, b.1959) The Proposal, 2006 Oil on board Signed bottom left 250 x 300mm Provenance: Donated by the Artist to The Prince’s Trust Evening of Art £1,000 - £1,500 Paul Robinson was born in Penrith, Cumbria in 1959, and grew up in the Eden Valley village of Lazonby. He studied Fine Art at Carlisle College of Art. After moving to London he embarked on a successful career as a freelance illustrator, working for many leading publications such as the Sunday Times and the Radio Times. He moved to North Norfolk in 1999 and discovered a whole new world to explore; a landscape consisting of an immeasurable expanse of sea and sky. He also turned his attention to the subjects on his door-step to fuel his imagination. This resulted in an ongoing series of paintings which includes; his ladies with stick thin legs, walking their reluctant dogs in the wind, rain and snow, romantic interludes, and bustling towns created from his imagination. These paintings are based on the eccentric characters he spots on his travels, his familiar childhood surroundings, as well as the beautiful towns and villages dotted along the North Norfolk coast. Each piece of Paul’s work is accompanied by often humorous titles to illustrate the story behind the painting. His work is included in private, corporate and public collections worldwide. The Proposal is a perfect example of Paul’s quirky interpretation of a snapshot of everyday life. (She’s not exactly gorgeous, and her legs are rather skinny, but there’s only one girl in the world for George, and that is his sweetheart Winnie) Paul’s work can be viewed via his web site paulrobinsonpaintings.com 23

Eloise uses different mediums such as oil, grass and polystyrene to evoke ‘materials in action’ in an attempt to create and capture moving, growing, feeling things. Lot 20 Amber-Lauren Ballantyne - Styles (British, b. 1994) Morning Glory, 2014 Acrylic on board Signed bottom right 500 x 1000mm Provenance: Donated by the Artist to The Prince’s Trust Evening of Art £400 - £600 Amber-Lauren is a 20 year old artist, first backed by The Prince’s Trust in April 2014. She creates large abstract pieces and watercolours and is currently creating a collection of Pop-Art Portraits for a London exhibition later this year. Her clients include famous celebrities from stage and screen and her subjects have included HRH The Prince of Wales, with whom she’s enjoyed personal correspondence. Amber-Lauren’s career derived from a period in her life when she was an elite Gymnast. Despite successfully representing Great Britain she was harangued by her coach, which lead to serious health issues. This lead Amber-Lauren to produce a series of paintings depicting ‘real’ women of all shapes and sizes. Her first exhibition was a great success and caught the interest of local TV, radio and national media. Amber-Lauren applied for mentoring from The Prince’s Trust in order to start and make a success of her business Amber-Lauren Fine Art. Amber-Lauren is delighted to donate her art to the organisation whose support helped to put her name on the Art World map! Morning Glory (acrylic on board) represents Amber-Lauren’s vibrant and abstract style. To find out more about Amber-Lauren visit amber-laurenfineart.co.uk

Lot 21 Erica Timothy (British, b. 1959) Quaver, 2009 Crank clay with iron oxide and tea dust glaze Signed on base 310 x 220 x 100mm Provenance: Donated by the Artist to The Prince’s Trust Evening of Art £80 - £120 Erica Timothy is an emerging talent in contemporary ceramics with her work increasingly sought after by serious collectors and galleries. Erica’s ceramics are intuitive, sculptural and organic with a narrative and natural beauty. Her work displays the influence of Anish Kapoor, Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore, combined with strong inspiration from nature. From the round bottom vessels of West Africa to the fabulously extravagant horns of antelopes, cattle and sheep, which led to her early series of horned vessels. Erica engages and enhances the craft form of ceramics, challenging and overturning its second class status within the world of fine arts, to explore witty and thought provoking themes that resonate. Process is important to Erica, who sees it as integral to her way of working. There is no imposed or pre-imagined order to her work, instead she allows the work to develop as she creates, continually experimenting and refining her skills and ideas as she progresses. This achieves an organic form that lives as a beautiful piece of art, yet on close inspection, evokes a polemic or an ideology. Quaver (crank clay) is an example of Erica’s organic style of work. Erica’s work can be viewed at her website ericatimothy.co.uk 30

More recent works on paper build on the ‘serial’ style Frank has developed and are no less arresting and successful. His work garners healthy respect, and his work is found in many ‘Modern British’ collections. Number 16 is one of a series on acrylic on newspaper, which was an experimental phase that Frank went through, producing perhaps his most interesting work since the ‘70s. Two months later he suffered a broken neck in a tragic car accident, resulting in complete paralysis. After six months in the National Spinal Injuries Centre, Keith returned home to begin the painful process of adjusting to his new situation. Unable to do anything for himself Keith naturally experienced the depths of despair. In 1996 the gift of a book entitled ‘Painters First’, a collection of biographies of the Mouth & Foot Painting Artists, inspired Keith by reading their triumphs and successes. Eager to encourage this spark of interest Keith’s wife arranged a meeting with the mouth artist Trevor Wells who persuaded Keith to try painting by holding a brush in his mouth. Despite disastrous early efforts Keith persevered and in 1998 he was accepted as a Student Artist by the international self help organisation, the Mouth & Foot Painting Artists. This achievement spurred Keith on to work with such determination that in 2000 he was promoted to a full Member Artist within the Association. Keith has held a number of solo exhibitions in the UK and Italy and his paintings have been exhibited in museums around the world including; Lisbon, Madrid, Copenhagen, Shanghai and Atlanta. Keith enjoys exploring the sensations of light in his paintings, which can be seen in Lilies & Sculpture – Still Life in Studio. For more details on Keith’s work go to keithjansz.com 32

Lot 28 Mark Demsteader (British, b.1963) Bethany, 2015 Pastel and collage Signed bottom right 1170 x 810mm Provenance: Donated by the Artist to The Prince’s Trust Evening of Art £3,000 - £5,000 Mark Demsteader was born in Manchester where he still lives and works. He is largely self taught having spent years studying the figure at life drawing classes and developing a unique style through close observation of the human form. In recent years Mark’s reputation has flourished, such that he has become one of the most popular figurative artists working in Britain today. His powerful depictions of the female form in clean and assured lines of pastel and gouache have sparked a renaissance of interest in traditional life drawing. His technical ability is tempered by the natural sensitivity with which he imbues each subject. Although isolated in the picture plane each model Mark draws seems to live and breathe their expression and poise, conveying a sense of narrative that invites the viewer to ask more questions about them than the artist answers. This can be seen as you look at Bethany. See more of Mark’s work at markdemsteader.com 37

Lot 36 Celia Read (British, b.1941) The First Elegy and The Third Elegy (2006) Watercolour Signed by the artist bottom right The First Elegy - 280 x 380mm. The Third Elegy - 290 x 380mm Provenance: Donated by the Artist to The Prince’s Trust Evening of Art £600 - £800 Celia Read studied at Putney School of Art, Sir John Cass and Central St. Martins 1984 - 91. She set up her studio in Park Studios, North London in 1992. She lives in London with her husband Tom Read and has studios in Finsbury Park and Andalucia. The profound impact of a holiday in Italy, spent looking at Piero della Francesco’s masterpieces, took Celia Read by surprise, and led her to re-explore the meaning of the Christian narrative that had imbued her childhood. Wondering how people from different cultures and religions view the great religious master pieces of Western Civilisation, she used painting as a way of meditating on the insights and inspiration from her own heritage, whilst reading and learning from others. In these paintings we can feel her commitment to seeking a way to allow that which is deeply mysterious to inhabit her work, to celebrate and give form to the sacred in a secular society. Celia’s work is found in many public and private collections, both in the UK and abroad. The First Elegy & The Third Elegy are from a series painted in response to Rilke’s /Duino Elegies’, part of a group of works titled ‘Announciation, Resurrection, Incarnation’, first shown in 2006. These pieces sit side by side. See more of Celia’s work at celiaread.com

Lot 39 Susan Derges (British, b.1955) Bridge, 2011 Digital C Type print, edition 7/9 610 x 300mm Provenance: Donated by the Artist to The Prince’s Trust Evening of Art £3,000 - £5,000 Susan Derges is one of the world’s most celebrated photo artists. She was born in London and studied at Chelsea School of Art and Slade School of Fine Art. Much of her work revolves around the creation of visual metaphors exploring the relationship between the observer and the observed; the self and nature or the imagined and the ‘real’. Her practice reflects the work of the earliest pioneers of photography but is also very contemporary in its awareness of environmental issues and the complexity of its conceptual meanings. ‘Alder Brook’ of which Bridge is a part of, is a series of work made over a period of a year which focused on one location near the Artist’s home. The images are digitally reworked in her studio, combined with silhouettes of the subject matter contained in the reflections to give a sense of both the physicality and the ephemerality or transience of what is there. Lot 42 Kimathi Donkor (British, b. 1965) Notebook IV, 2014 Watercolour and pencil on paper 320 x 240mm Provenance: Donated by the Artist to The Prince’s Trust Evening of Art £500-£700 Kimathi Donkor is a contemporary British artist whose large-scale figurative paintings are genuine cornucopias of interwoven reference: to Western art, social and political events, and to the artist's own biography. He has exhibited in museums and galleries across the UK and internationally. Kimathi’s family roots stem from Ghana, Jamaica, England, Zambia and Poland. His meticulously crafted compositions draw on antique traditions of portraiture and history painting. However, the themes of his work often address dramatic modern subjects - ranging from urban conflict in contemporary London to the adventures of Ghana's anti-colonial heroine, Yaa Asantewaa. By using friends or family as sitters, Kimathi believes it imparts a degree of intimacy to the monumentality of his figures. Notebook IV, is an excellent example of Kimathi’s meticulous work, drawing on antique styles of portraiture but with a modern theme. More of Kimathi’s work can be found at kimathidonkor.net 51

Lot 45 Jason Kelly (British b.1986) 8 of Hearts (white) Fine art print, with spot glazes and white diamond crust. Artist Proof “A.P. 2/2” Signed in pencil by the artist, lower right of print Provenance: Donated by the Artist to The Prince’s Trust Evening of Art £700- £1,000 Born in Cornwall, Jason Kelly is a conceptual artist, influenced by the St Ives School, particularly the abstract work of Barbara Hepworth and Sir Terry Frost. Jason has experimented with printmaking in collaboration with Sir Peter Blake, Barbara Rae and other artists. 8 of Hearts is produced by the renowned printers Coriander Studio. This artist's proof is from Jason’s edition 8 of Hearts, and is one of three colour-way variations. Each print portrays the eight of hearts playing card, each heart and number is made up of an individual element of the Chinese 100 Yuan note. The number 8 was chosen because of its association in China with good luck and fortune. Chinese currency was therefore used instead of the British pound which features as the main element of Jason’s other work. See more at jasonkelly.co.uk 54

Watching Mad Men (acrylic on board) reflects the humour and ambiguity from which her paintings are renowned. To see more of Anita’s work, visit her website anitaklein.com

Conditions of Sale for the Evening of Art Auction on Thursday 8th October 2015 (the “Sale”)

The items offered in this Sale and listed in this catalogue (the “Property”) will be sold by Prince’s Trust Trading Limited, a company registered in England and Wales under number 3161821. Prince’s Trust Trading Limited is a company which has covenanted to pay its net profits each year to The Prince’s Trust, a charity registered with the Charity Commission under number 1079675. These terms constitute the contract for sale (the “Contract for Sale”) of any lot by Prince’s Trust Trading Limited (the “Seller”) to the Purchaser (as defined below) at the Sale. Any questions in relation to the auction should be directed to the Seller and not to the auctioneer, who serves merely as auctioneer for the Seller in conducting the sale. The Sale is subject to the following terms and conditions which govern the sale of all the Property offered (as amended by any posted notices or oral announcements during the auction) (the “Conditions of Sale”): 1. The Seller assumes no risk, liability or responsibility for the authenticity or the authorship of any of the Property (that is, the identity of the creator or the period, culture, source or origin, as the case may be, with which the creation of any property is identified herein); The Property is sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description; The Seller does not make or give and does not agree to make or give any representation of fact, undertaking, obligation, guarantee, contractual promise or warranty or undertake any duty of care of any kind or nature, expressed or implied, in relation to any description (which shall include inter alia physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, genuineness, attribution, authenticity or provenance) of any of the Property or any estimate in relation to it, nor in relation to satisfactory quality of the Property or its fitness for purpose. No statement made in the auction catalogue, at any time before, during or after the Sale, in any Sale invoice or elsewhere, will be deemed to be such a representation of fact, undertaking, obligation, guarantee, contractual promise or warranty. 2. Any of the Property may be withdrawn by the Seller at any time before the Sale. 3. Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time of the Sale, all bids are per lot as numbered in the catalogue. 4. The Seller reserves the right to reject a bid from any bidder. Property may be offered subject to a reserve price. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer will have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to reoffer and resell the lot in dispute. If any dispute arises after the Sale, the Sale records of the Seller will be conclusive in all respects. 5. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the Property, he may reject the same and withdraw the Property from Sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, he decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, he may reject the advance. 6. The sale of any lot is complete and the Contract for Sale is made at either the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer in the case of the live auction, or at the announced closing time of the silent auction. Thereupon, the highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer for any lot is the purchaser (the “Purchaser”) of that lot (the “Lot”) and is contractually bound to: assume the risk and responsibility of the Lot; sign a confirmation of purchase thereof; and pay the full amount of his highest bid for the Lot (the “Purchase Price”). 7. Title to the Lot remains in and is retained by the Seller until the Purchase Price and all other sums payable by the Purchaser to the Seller have been paid in full, and received in cleared funds by the Seller. The Seller is entitled to withhold possession of the Lot from the Purchaser until this time. The Seller is only required to hold the Lot for 90 days from the date of the Sale, after which, if the Purchaser has not collected or arranged for collection of the Lot, the Seller may, at its sole discretion, send the Lot to external storage for the account and at the risk and expense of the Purchaser. Any charges associated with the transport and storage of the Lot are to be borne by the Purchaser and will be added to the Purchase Price.

67

PT004 OSA5 Listing_Layout 1 16/09/2015 09:16 Page 68

8. Risk in the Lot passes to the Purchaser at the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer in respect of the Lot. The Seller will thereafter not be responsible for the Lot and the Purchaser will indemnify the Seller and keep the Seller fully indemnified from and against all claims, proceedings, costs, expenses and losses arising in respect of any injury, loss and damage caused to the Lot after the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer until the Purchaser obtains full title to it. 9. All lots must be claimed within 12 months of the Sale, unless otherwise noted. 10. If the foregoing conditions and other applicable conditions are not complied with, without prejudice to any other remedies available to the Seller by law, which for the avoidance of doubt includes the right to take legal proceedings against the Purchaser for any sum due under the Contract for Sale and/or damages for breach of contract, the Seller, at its sole discretion, is entitled to exercise one or more of the following rights: to terminate the Contract for Sale immediately for breach of contract; to retain possession of the Lot; to be paid interest on any monies due at the rate of 5% per annum above the base rate of National Westminster Bank Plc to be calculated on a daily basis; to retain as liquidated damages all payments made by the Purchaser; to resell the Lot by auction, private treaty or any other means to any third party, on three days’ written notice of intention to sell to the Purchaser, following which the Purchaser will be liable to Seller for payment of any shortfall between the Purchase Price and the sum of the price achieved upon resale all other charges due hereunder and any incidental damages. The Seller is under no obligation to achieve an optimum or fair market value for the Lot upon resale. 11. The Purchaser will indemnify the Seller against all legal and other costs of enforcement, all losses and other expenses and costs incurred by the Seller (whether or not court proceedings will have been issued) as a result of the Seller taking any of the steps under clause 10. 12. Payments for purchases must be made in pound sterling (unless otherwise noted) and in any one of the following forms: cash, cheque (backed by cheque guarantee card) or major credit cards. 13. In no circumstances will the Purchaser be able to rescind the Contract of Sale. 14. Subject to paragraph 16, in no circumstances will the Seller be required to refund any amount paid in respect of any lot to the Purchaser. 15. The Purchaser will be wholly responsible for any removal, storage, shipping, delivery costs, other charges and expenses incurred by the Seller in connection with the Lot and for complying with all import or export regulations in connection with the Lot. 16. If the Seller is prevented from performing its obligations under the Contract for Sale by circumstances beyond its control or if performance of its obligations would by reason of such circumstances give rise to a significantly increased financial cost to it, the Seller will not, for as long as such circumstances prevail, be required to perform such obligations. In such circumstances, the Seller will not be deemed to be in breach of the Contract of Sale, or be liable for failure to fulfill any of its duties thereunder and will only be liable to refund the Purchaser such sum that is equal to the Bid Amount (where this has been fully paid by the Purchaser) less any costs incurred by the Seller in connection with the Lot. 17. References in these Conditions of Sale to the singular will include references to the plural (and vice-versa) and reference to any one gender will include reference to other genders. 18. These Conditions of Sale, as well as the Purchaser’s and the Seller’s, respective rights and obligations hereunder, will be governed by and construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. 19. By bidding at the Sale, whether present in person or by agent, commission bid, telephone or other means, the bidder will be deemed to have agreed to these Conditions of Sale and to have consented to the exclusive jurisdiction of Courts of England and Wales. These Conditions of Sale and the documents referred to herein constitute the entire agreement between each bidder at the Sale and the Seller.
