C

allanwolde, a magnificent Gothic Tudor-style mansion, was built in 1920 as the home of Charles Howard Candler, eldest son of Coca-Cola founder Asa G. Candler. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Callanwolde is a unique arts center that enriches the lives of metropolitan Atlantans year round. In 1972, Callanwolde was purchased with funds raised by concerned citizens and a matching government grant. It is presently owned by DeKalb County; the grounds are maintained by the Department of Parks and Recreations, and the buildings are maintained by Physical Plant Management. Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is now operated and restored by the Callanwolde Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit, tax-exempt corporation. Funding is dependent upon private and corporate support, government grants, fundraisers, and the arts and education programs. Located upstairs in the Petite Hall is the Callanwolde exhibition area. These exhibitions are open to the public at no charge. Gallery hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.

HOURS: The Callanwolde mansion and grounds are open 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. weekdays and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The mansion is closed on Sundays. MARTA: From Edgewood/Candler Park Station or Lindbergh Station, take Bus #6. PARKING: Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is forced to observe a strict parking policy due to limited parking spaces and public safety. Cars may be parked only in the back parking lot. You are asked NOT to park in the driveway behind the Carriage House. Additional parking can be found next door at Laurel Heights Hospital, but only in the lower lot adjacent to Callanwolde. It is imperative that cars are not parked in any entrance, exit, or fire lane. This also applies to parking at Laurel Heights. Cars parked in No Parking areas will be subject to towing.

Callanwolde is located in the historic Druid Hills neighborhood of Atlanta, conveniently situated between the Virginia-Highland neighborhood and the campus of Emory University, and is approximately five blocks north of the intersection of Briarcliff Road and Ponce de Leon Avenue.

Programs and facilities are offered to all persons without regard to race, color, sex, national origin, age, creed or disability.

From I-85 North/South: Take exit 89, North Druid Hills Road, and drive south on North Druid Hills Road. The first major intersection is Briarcliff Road (Loehmann’s Plaza will be on the right). Turn right onto Briarcliff Road and Callanwolde is approximately four miles on the right. From I-75 North/South: Take exit 248C, Carter Center/Freedom Parkway, and stay on Freedom Parkway for about two miles until it dead-ends into Ponce de Leon Avenue. Turn right onto Ponce de Leon and at the third traffic light turn left onto Briarcliff Road. Callanwolde is about five blocks on the left.

Eggstravaganza hops into Callanwolde! A family favorite for years, Callanwolde’s Easter Egg Hunt features thousands of candy-filled eggs to find, Atlanta Brave’s games & prizes and a chance to meet the Easter Bunny. Bring your Easter basket and your camera for a fun family day set in Callanwolde’s beautiful spring gardens. All proceeds benefit the Callanwolde Dance Program. In case of rain the event will be cancelled and tickets refunded. Arrive early for free parking and shuttle bus service at the Emory University Briarcliff Campus, 1256 Briarcliff Road, just one-half mile north of Callanwolde. TANGO NIGHT – AZALEA TANGO

Learn about the rhythm and movement of authentic Argentine Tango. Dancers of all skill levels are welcome and no partner is necessary. The evening begins at 8:00 pm with an introductory lesson from the expert instructors of Tango Rio (www.tango-rio.com). After the lesson, try out your new moves with an open tango dance party beginning at 9:15 pm. Tickets are sold at the door. Soft drinks and light snacks will be provided. Callanwolde’s Jazz on the Lawn presents a series of summer outdoor concerts showcasing a lineup of Atlanta’s jazz treasures. Guests are invited to bring a blanket and a picnic and enjoy cool jazz under the stars! Concerts begin at 7:30 pm. Parking is onsite and free. Tickets: $15 advance purchase online; $20 at the door. CHILDREN MUST HAVE PARENTAL SUPERVISION BEFORE AND AFTER THEIR CLASS No Children’s Dance classes during Spring Break Week, April 8 - 13. Callanwolde is closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27. Children’s Dance Recital: Saturday, June 1. The aim of this program is to instill in each student the joy of dance as an art form. The program includes technical skills, improvisation and choreography, musical background, and performing experience within a graded structure. Children are allowed a high degree of personal freedom for their own invention and creativity. This educational approach to dance utilizes problem solving, observation, and sharing of experience.

Make-Up Policy:

Callanwolde is not responsible for classes missed due to student absences. Parents should discuss make-up policy with their Instructor. Dance students must make up classes missed during a quarter before the end of that quarter. Children should attend a class of the same age group with the same instructor.

Parents’ Day:

Parents may observe the class ‘in action,’ and may discuss their child’s personal growth and development with the instructor on the last day of dance classes. Parent observation is *for non-recital dance classes only, and will be the week of Monday, May 20 - Thursday, May 23. Classes performing in the recital do not have a Parent Observation Day. *Non-recital dances classes are marked with an asterisk.

Scholarship Assistance:

A limited number of partial scholarships are available to dance students 5-years-old and older. Criteria are need, talent, and commitment to the program. All scholarship funds for 2012-13 have been awarded.

Introduces boys and girls ages 3-6 to the fundamentals of dance, while helping them to increase their physical strength, flexibility, coordination and endurance. Designed to increase the student’s selfconfidence and to find a greater joy in moving, dance and personal expression. Children should wear comfortable clothes and may dance barefoot or in ballet slippers. Tights and leotard are preferred. All classes are 9 weeks.

Class time will include more individual ‘turn taking’ activities, longer sequences of movement, and progress to more advanced locomotor skills such as skipping. THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF DANCE SYLLABUS R.A.D. ballet classes are 9 weeks; Saturday is 6 weeks.

The Royal Academy of Dance is an international classical dance teaching organization with roots in Great Britain. The R.A.D. has devised a carefully graduated syllabus to teach classical dance from beginning to advanced performance levels. Please consult the uniform information sheet for the required style of leotard for each ballet grade level (sheets available in the registration office). All R.A.D. Process-oriented television camp invites kids aged 9 & up to work in their own TV control room: 4 cameras, wireless microphones, live video digital special effects mixer, and all the TV production positions as they “round-robin” through twelve TV jobs to create their own music video or television short. The 12 positions include: 4-camera operators, audio engineer, stage manager, props & set decoration, video engineer, production assistant, associate director, technical director and director. Learn silver piercing (cutting), shaping, soldering, texturing, finishing (polishing) and stone setting. Internship course for learning to operate a pottery studio. Kiln firing and design, basic glaze formulation, and photographic techniques will be covered. ***Due to the popularity of this course, registrations are accepted immediately upon receipt of your catalog. Open registration date does not apply.*** Beginning students will learn the basics of floor loom weaving and complete a sampler. Supplies are included in the tuition. Intermediate project is double weave. Intermediate students must purchase their own supplies. Min. 6, max. 10. Instructors: 6624

Beginning Knitting

In this introductory course, you will learn how to cast on, how to perform the knit and purl stitch, and how to increase, decrease and bind off. Please come to the first class with two balls of worsted weight wool yarn in light contrasting colors, and THREE sets of needles: 1 set of 16-inch circular needles (size 7), one set of straight needles (size 7), and one set of double pointed needles (size 7). Weaving is a fiber art that has been practiced in every culture for centuries. Although loom weaving may be one of the most familiar types of the art form, weaving has numerous applications. The objectives are to provide the student with hands-on experience in visualizing and creating sculptural forms, while expanding their knowledge of functional arts. Learn how to create sculptures using natural fibers as the foundation or warp. The sisal and needles used will be provided and included in the tuition; students supply yarn. Upon completion, students will have a sculptural form or two of their own creation. Min. 5, max. 15. Instructor: Fee: 6625

After learning to knit, you will want to increase your knowledge of knitting techniques. In this class you will learn the techniques of cables, lace, and how to do two-color Fair Isle knitting. You will learn the skills of reading patterns and charts, how to change colors, and how to perform different cast-ons and bind-offs. A variety of patterns will be offered and students can choose among them to practice the above techniques. Requirements: Students should know how to knit and purl. Bring 2 contrasting colors of worsted weight wool, at least 3 oz of each; 16î circular needles (size 7), straight needles (size 7) and double pointed needles (size 7). Other supplies will be suggested in class. Min. 4, max. 15. Instructor: Fee: 6627

Knit Yourself Some Jewelry

Looking for an easy fun project for the summer? How about a head start on gifts? Try your hand at knitting wire to make stunning jewelry in a short period of time. Materials will be provided to create earrings for pierced ears or a pendant using fine gauge wire and either tumbled gemstone chips, beads or pearls. Please bring several small sizes of metal, wood or bamboo knitting needles size 0 to 6, and any beads or old jewelry you’d like to recycle. Must know how to caston, knit, and bind-off. Bring a sack lunch on Saturday. Min. 4, max. 14. Instructor: Fee: 6628

CANCELLATIONS: Callanwolde Fine Arts Center reserves the right to cancel any class due to insufficient enrollment. Full refunds are issued for cancelled classes. We make every effort to notify students of postponements and cancellations at least 24 hours before the first scheduled class. Dates and times are subject to change as necessary. Callanwolde may elect to postpone a class in order to accept additional registrations to meet minimum enrollment requirements. ABSENTEE POLICY: Callanwolde is not responsible for classes missed due to student absence. Please discuss unavoidable absences with the instructor. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that no student’s space will be held without full payment of all class fees.
