alifornia Towhee: California Towhees are brown, Robin sized birds that generally are found on the ground below feeders, scratching about for the castoffs from the birds actually on the feeders. They are year round residents. Although mostly brown, they have a light brown streaking on the feathers between their lower beak and breast and reddish feathers underneath their tail. This is a common bird in neighborhoods and is often one of the first birds to be heard singing in the morning. Their song is a few slower chips followed by a thinner and quicker series of chirps. A group of towhees is referred to as a “tangle.�
