hite Crowned Sparrow: These birds winter in our area but spend their summers as far north as northern Canada and Alaska. A few may be found throughout the year though, enjoying the mild Central Coast weather. Their gawdy white cap is a dead giveaway for this medium sized sparrow. The crown on younger birds will appear brown and white. They have a beautiful, mournful song in the spring often likened to the phrase “poor wet wetter chee zee.” A group of sparrows is referred to as a “crew.”
