7th August 2020 FROM THE PROVINCIAL CHAPLAINS

The last time we wrote the lockdown had not been in place for long. We were all trying to come to terms with what was an unknown quantity. Suddenly, we had a lot of time on our hands and in so many places people have responded in such a constructive manner.

There has been a huge move to help those more

vulnerable; families have responded within their own areas, coming together as never before. Many others have responded to appeals for help from all manner of organisations; making special masks for the NHS, working alongside hospital staff voluntarily, doing bulk shopping for those who are vulnerable and unable to get out. We are now in the process of easing the lockdown but that seems to bring its own problems. Many areas have had to go back into lockdown because of a rise in infections. This virus is very adaptive and moves very quickly. Most people realise this, and we all try to stick to the guidance, much of which is straightforward. Brethren all, we can only pray that decency and common sense will prevail as it is the best way to try and curtail the spread of this virulent disease. Previously we asked if this crisis can in some ways be seen as an opportunity, a sign of divine patience and mercy. Because of the way in which we have allowed this, God’s world to evolve, is this pandemic of our own creation telling us to stop and think? God gave us brains, intelligence, the ability to think for ourselves. Running this world is our responsibility. Let us pray that what is happening continues to generate in us the willingness to do something about it.

There are many instances where hopefully, the good work begun will continue and make what will be a very different world a better place to live. Let us pray that when things start to ease there isn’t a mass rush to return to what many things were like before. Freemasonry itself could be a much stronger society. Chaplains keeping in touch with their lodge/chapter members along with the Almoners have, we are certain, got to know people so much better and discovered things which will be an enhancement to not only their faiths but also their friendships and understanding. History is a great seat of learning for us to build the foundations in the present to take us into the future. Brethren all, please remember that we the Chaplains continue to pray for you, and we are there for anyone who feels they have something to share whether it be a problem or perhaps just a good joke. We wish you all well and may the Great Architect of the Universe bestow His love upon you and bring comfort where it is needed. So Mote It Be. W. Bro. Canon Ron Black W. Bro. Julian Ward Bro. Revd.
