GUIDELINES FOR EDUCATION GRANTS 1

Applicants or members of their immediate families seeking help must demonstrate that they have: i) a strong Masonic connection within the Province of Durham and ii) a need for financial support.

2

Consideration for financial assistance towards their educational needs will be given to those up to the age of 25, excluding a Doctorate.

3

Consideration for financial assistance may be given to those studying for a professional qualification.

4

An application form must be completed in full and submitted to The Education Committee of Durham Benevolence, The Provincial Grand Lodge of Durham.

What constitutes a strong Masonic connection? •

“Children in full time education” includes young children when they are aged 25 and younger.

Grandchildren must be in full time education.

Grandfather must have been a FM when the grandchild was born.

Other dependants are those with a wider familial relationship to the FM, where they can demonstrate significant long term physical or financial support from the Freemason.

“Others who are dependent upon a FM” does not automatically include adult children living at home.

The FM must have been initiated/joined before the need arose. Deteriorating long term health conditions will be looked at sympathetically.

For lapsed FMs and their connections, support will be offered for up to 2x the length of subscribing membership.

Excluded and resigned FMs (and their dependants) may still apply.

Expelled FMs cannot apply for any support, of any kind, for themselves (ex-wives, widows, partners, children can).

These will be used to guide the Education Committee but each individual case will be considered on its merit.
