TO AFRICA! Vzhůru do Afriky

Children‘s Fiction

new edition of beautiful vintage book

Helena Řezáčová Rudolf Lukeš The tale of two brothers who embark on an adventure in Africa Each chapter presents a different African animal, starting with lions and ending with giraffes. The different animals have their own specific, and often hilarious, qualities. The boys learn all about the creatures and how to get along with them—every chapter includes a short note that offers advice to the readers on how to befriend them. This easy and funny text makes a great book for young children. Rudolf Lukeš (1923–1976) worked as a set designer with some of the most famous filmmakers of 40s. In 1948 the Communists blacklisted him from working in the film industry and he took a job as a lacquerer. He never gave up his artistic pursuits and w when the publisher Artia announced a contest to find a new uillustrator for children’s books, Lukeš entered anonymously and won. As a result he could indulge his fantasies in books that went on to make their way around the globe—his name was not allowed to appear in them, though.

Narrative

Daisy Mrázková A poetic narrative about how the cause of one person’s sorrow can be a source of joy for someone else. Through words and images, the tale portrays the personification of Tuesday speaking with an old woman, helping her remember her childhood and the doll that she lost so long ago. This lyrical epic begins with an old woman sadly remembering a toy she lost as a child. Tuesday sits with her in the park and tells her what really happened to her doll: the doll wasn’t lost, but stolen from a basket by a boy. Feeling sorry, he returns the doll, but to the wrong address, so the doll ends up in the garden of a completely different girl. The doll fulfills her deepest wish, which leads her to learn the piano… The book develops through a sequence of short episodes where one starts the next and culminates in a surprising conclusion, when the story from the past meets the present in front of old woman’s eyes.

Daisy Mrázková (1923), painter and writer, is famous for her children‘s books she writes and illustrates as well. For their imagination, timelessness and poeticism, her books are compared to Exupéry’s Little Prince. Her books for children also speak to adults with their wisdom, and their kind view of the world.

In this homage to the old age and to all grandfathers of the world, the author Pavel Čech (1968) demonstrates his highly poetic imagination; his drawings are elegant and slightly melancholic; his stories are reminiscent of glorious old days of knighthood and true adventures. While creating worlds beyond the realm of the everyday experience, the author always spices them up with endless wit and humour.

Rudolf Mertlík Michal Cihlář Odysseus’ glory, his cunning, his hardships, and the loyalty of his wife Penelope are still known today, and they will be known until the end of time. Such words end this book about the king of Ithaca, the hero of ancient mythology. His ten-year journey home after the Trojan War brought him eternal fame. Homer’s ancient Greek epic The Odyssey portrays in detail all of his hardships, his struggles with giants, monsters, the Olympian gods, and the sea. Throughout these desperate situations, our hero comes out on top, unlike his comrades. When Odysseus reaches home, he does so alone. Rudolf Mertlík retells this grand epic in a way that appeals to young readers. It first appeared forty-five years ago, yet even today his adaptation remains both modern and faithful – as timeless as Odysseus and the tales about him.

His feelings about this are quite obvious as he lies on his back, kicking and screaming. Luckily, Vealfillet – another odd kid with an adequately cute name – shares his attitude. Together they plan to escape, and after a sequence of brief episodes, mostly accidents and a little mischief–typical for their peculiar and wild nature–they finally succeed to be nice happy children again!

The beloved great-grandfather has started forgetting more and more, and he is doing some funny things. But what five-year-old Honzík considers funny are actually very real signs of an illness. Alzheimer’s, the disease the whole family learns to live with, somewhat paradoxically brings Honzík and his greatgrandfather closer together, since in a certain way they are in similar positions. The little boy becomes a great source of support in the everyday situations which are becoming much more difficult for his great-grandfather. While the he difficult topic may seem shocking for such a young audience, the book approaches it sensitively and humorously in a way that children will easily understand.

Vratislav Maňák Juraj Horváth Why does the time change every fall? This fantastic story set in the Austro-Hungarian Empire weaves elements of detective fiction and steampunk together to create a riveting alternative history. The narrative unwinds in the fictional town of Makovín during the turn of the century, La Belle Epoque, the Jugendstil days of the Habsburg Monarchy. An unusual family arrives at the train station – inventor Leoš Šína, his wife Ludovika, and their eight-year-old daughter Lenka. Mr. Šína is there to show the mayor one of his inventions – a portable hotel room. But when Lenka notices that the one hand of the train station clock is gone, replaced with a tiny man, the trip turns into a dramatic quest for the stolen clock-hand. Vratislav Maňák, a young and critically acclaimed writer, tells one of the first Czech steampunk stories. The lush atmosphere is complemented by the blue-and-brown illustrations of artist Juraj Horváth, multiple-winner of the Most Beautiful Czech Book prize.

Initiation Island is the first book of the nine-book Seventh Sense saga. Hanka, Sváťa and Rafan live together in Cozy House, which has never ever been as cozy as the name implies. Children there labor all day for just a bit of gruel and old bread, a little like in Oliver Twist’s orphanage. One day after a storm when the children are collecting washed up shells and amber on the beach, Hanka finds a great ring in the sand… At that exact moment the mysterious stranger Vron receives a signal from somewhere in Europe that sends him on a quest to find the one who has put on the ring. It leads him to Cozy House, where he recognizes the extraordinary aura around the children and leads them to the Island of Choice. There the children discover that they have a seventh sense and they begin to study in Santarena: a world of magic that they never believed to exist!

Zdeněk Mahler Vladimír Fuka

Jiří Kolář Vladimír Fuka Art and fun in one book. Illustrated jokes, rebuses and games for children and adults alike.

The timeless publication artfully captures the “Mad Men” era of New York for readers of all ages.

A fantastic artifact full of humor, non-senses, beautiful pictures, where every detail is so surprising. The first edition gained prestigious Torchio d´Oro award for the graphic in Bologna in 1965 and was translated in English, Italian and German. The author of the Italian text translation is famous writer Gianni Rodari.

The unique essence of New York is poetically celebrated in Vladimír Fuka’s brilliant, colorful illustrations and collages and Zdeněk Mahler’s playful accompanying narrative. The book takes readers on a charming journey of discovery through the magnificent metropolis’s architectural landmarks, cultural hot spots, and ethnically diverse neighborhoods. New York was created already in 60es, but the entire print run was pulped after Fuka emigrated to US. The book was finally brought to life when Mahler’s grandson discovered surviving printing proofs. Fifty years later, it remains as fresh as ever.

“There are pages to look at, pages to read and pages to play with. There are also blank spaces where you can scrawl something... I had a lot of fun with this book. And I’ll bet all of my chips against yours, that you’ll enjoy it too.“ (Gianni Rodari)

Wellness & Health

Nevíte, co jíte – Jak vás klame potravinářský průmysl

AN INVESTIGATIVE APPROACH TO SOLVING THE PRINCIPLES OF A HEALTHY DIET

WHAT IS THIS BOOK ABOUT? Petr Fořt, Ivan Mach

Chapter 1: WHAT ARE FATS? What is behind their structure? What are “good” and “bad” fats, how much of them can and should you eat, how many can you eat without risking your health?

Chapter 2: WHAT ARE SUGARS? Aren’t they useless? This is not simply about sugar, but the vast number of carbohydrates whose effects are often unpredictable.

Chapter 3: SALT – MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD, OR LEGENDS AND REALITY. Shocking possibilities with the (ab)use of salt.

connected

CAUTION: Do not read this; it won’t make you feel good! Friendly warning: What you are eating right now is not what it appears to be. Spit it out now! To the surprise of the reader and the publisher the contents of this book are quite serious. It deals with facts vs. myths, real food vs. experts’ recommendations, how food manufacturers lie and hide behind the fame of “cooperating” (i.e. well paid and corrupted) experts. WHO or WHAT decides what a nation will eat? Statements appear in the media from various experts warning about serious consequences from eating a poor diet. But nobody is able to predict how a person will adjust to these new eating habits. Modern food technology is aimed at increasing the shelf-life of food and making food easier to manufacture, not improving its biological value. As independent experts constantly assert, there are major risks today in the level of food quality, and not just from an extreme caloric intake from fats, sugars, and salts. The worst are food additives, including artificial sweeteners, colors, preservatives, and flavors. While there are safe additives, even these can be harmful. Officially approved additives come with risks that only reveal themselves after years of consumption. And we are not even considering the clearly dangerous influence of so-called environmental toxins, or even our own waste containing the residue of medications and birth control hormones.

Anna Crkalová, Norbert Riethof Coaching is recognized today as one of the most effective methods of increasing the productivity of managers, work groups, and individuals, and helping them achieve their potential. The authors – experienced consultants, trainers, and coaches – provide practical instructions on how to employ in coaching and leadership methods based on the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator (the most widely used tool for classifying personality types and understanding the differences between them), and how to coach different personality types – what to focus on and what to avoid. The book analyzes the principles, benefits, and requirements of good coaching, presenting a survey of the skills and knowledge an excellent coach must possess. “The authors push typological coaching into a new dimension thanks to their experience in the practice of coaching and their deep knowledge of psychological types. They help readers use personality classification not just practically but even creatively – considering the personalities of both the coach and the coached.” (David Megginson)

The dynamic balance of management skills. The unique concept of versatile leadership, which highlights the necessity of adopting a seemingly contradictory but complementary set of managerial skills and applying them in a balanced and appropriate manner. The book offers methods to avoid a one-sided management approach that relies too heavily on the strengths of the leader’s personality at the expense of those of their counterparts (“directed” versus “soft” leadership, focusing on tasks versus focusing on relationships) in order to achieve the greatest efficiency in management. This book introduces the broader public to the typology of personalities. It studies in detail the dynamics of personalities, the development people of specific personalities undergo throughout their lives, and psychological disorders that can manifest during specific incidents in a person’s life. The author explores why some people are immediately likeable and why others have exactly the opposite effect. It provides a humorous but fascinating analysis of friendships, romantic relationships, and the influence of personality types on one’s personal life. The book also examines the personality types of children, how and why parents of specific types have children with types different from them. It even covers learning and educational approaches that work best for teachers of different personality types. Michal Čakrt, 165 x 235 mm, 364 pp, paperback. 2008

PERSONALITY TYPES: CAREER CHOICE AND PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS Typologie osobnosti – volba povolání, kariéra a profesní úspěch Our work is a crucial part of our life. In order to lead a fulfilling life, a person should devote their efforts to what corresponds best to their own personality type. In his newest book the author, a renowned trainer and consultant, reveals the fundamental links between personality types and career choice. He offers advice on how different personality types can capitalize on their specific traits and strengths by selecting certain professions, as well as warning about weaknesses and potential “blind spots.” The book shows which positions suit different types (and which do not), and where they can excel. It posits the theory that by understanding our own personality type we can better recognize which skills we should develop and refine in order that they become competitive edges instead of personal hurdles. Michal Čakrt, 165 x 235 mm, 220 pp, paperback. 2010

PERSONALITY TYPES FOR MANAGERS Typologie osobnosti pro manažery Managerial styles, decisiveness, communication, conflicts, team work, time management, and adaptability. Popular book based upon Jung’s renowned typological theories. It provides methods to help us better understand ourselves through the lens of personality typology, how to recognize our personal style of management and approach to work, so that we may act quickly and decisively, resolving issues before they become problems. An understanding of personality types proves invaluable in the workplace as it allows us to recognize how we make decisions, communicate, experience and resolve conflicts, manage our time, approach teamwork, and adapt to changes. The more we know about our own personality type, the more we can accept others for who they are, not for who we want them to be. Michal Čakrt, 165 x 235 mm, 308 pp, paperback. 2012

Karel Pacner A journalist and historian, the author of the book has spent much of his time engaging in a systematic study of the archives of the secret police; his discoveries there have informed this fascinating and sophisticated book, which examines world history through a uniquely Central European lens. Fateful Moments of the 20th Century is not a historical encyclopedia in the traditional sense with detailed summaries of wars and dry events that occurred in the course of history. Karel Pacner, using facts uncovered in his own research, concentrates on key incidents that influenced the course of world history. With his extraordinary knack for seeing overlooked historical connections, he reveals the often cruel truth behind the bloodiest century in human history. It is fascinating how eruditely and empathetically he shows his readers how disparate events gradually build upon each other, how shockwaves from one country spread to another, and how eventually the effects shape the entire world’s development. Mankind’s desire for wealth is a characteristic feature of the previous century, and the story of the 20th century revolves around the exploitation of these yearnings by ideologues, beginning with Lenin the Russian bibliophile and his compatriot, the Georgian bank robber Stalin, who attracted followers to their naïve theory of universal prosperity. Each of the fourteen chapters includes a brief glossary of terms crucial to the era discussed as well as portraits of people who affected the century.

Vladimír Socha The fascinating history of dinosaurs' discovery. At the beginning of the 19th century, when the fossilized remains of dinosaurs, pterodactyls, and other giant vertebrates were unearthed and analyzed scientifically for the first time, a window opened letting humanity glimpse ancient geological ages which they had no idea even existed. Paleontology – the study of prehistoric life – was in its infancy, and the idea that giant reptiles once roamed the land instead of carriages and locomotives shocked the people of London, Paris, and other large cities. The book explores the fascinating history (prescientific and scientific) of the discovery of fossils, which have led to the current state of paleontology. Did prehistoric man also collect fossils? What must they have thought about the giant bones of a mammoth? How did the idea of the griffin and other legendary beasts arise? Which scientist served as the inspiration for the character of Indiana Jones? Which fossils were destroyed and which were stolen during the first and second world war? How did scientists discover that an enormous meteor helped kill off the dinosaurs? The answers to these questions, and many others, can be found in this book.

Halina Pawlowská This story of a woman’s yearning for love, an equal partner, and a happy family is told with intelligent humor and remorseless self-deprecation. The heroine, originally a shop assistant, studies for a psychology degree in order to be seen as an equal to her architect husband. He, however, leaves her since he feels neglected during her studies and decides he wants a simple life with an uncomplicated wife. Any attempt our heroine makes to find new love results in a fiasco.

This bittersweet novel tells the story of the Hakundek family, who moves to Czechoslovakia from Transcarpathian Ukraine. The plot unfolds over the twenty years following the Soviet occupation, during the time of “Normalization”. The protagonist is Olga, who experiences her first love and disappointment, and dreams of studying screenwriting despite her questionable background — to get past the communist gatekeepers and into film school she will need an iron will and 104 signatures attesting that “her uncle was not a bourgeois nationalist”. Her father also plays a crucial role in the story, an authoritative and ambitious man, a poet and pensioner, who holds never-ending parties in their apartment for friends and family from the Ukraine. The author injects humor and tenderness into this tale of tough times and difficult moments. The book inspired the famous and successful film of the same name.

In this unorthodox detective story the mystery arises not from a dead body, but a battered soul. On a hill above a small mountain village called Výtoň, an angel appears to nineyear-old Marie: the wind howls, the whole house shakes under the gusts. It all happens in an instant, but also for an eternity…Twelve years later, Milan, a journalism student, sets out for the place that has now become a pilgrimage site. He’s there to investigate the story and interview witnesses, so he can write his thesis on the Miracle of Výtoň. During his research, he uncovers some clues that indicate the apparition may have happened quite differently. Did little Marie really see an angel, or was it something of this world?

h has emerged in Czec de tect iv e fict ion!

The Church refuses to recognize the miracle, and Marie, the only true witness, is stuck working in a dive bar. Stricken with inexplicable anxiety, a trip down memory lane is the last thing she wants. A meeting with Helena, a former policewoman who left Prague behind for Výtoň, opens Milan’s eyes. From her experience as a cop, she believes the child must have undergone some unspeakable trauma. The miracle must be a way of protecting her fragile psyche from acknowledging what really occurred. What happened on that hill? Is Marie a prophet or a victim? Working together, Helena and Milan might just uncover the truth.

“They say Jiří Březina wrote his first book, On the Hill, as a bet. Well, he hit the jackpot with this chilling and well-constructed story. His description of life in Výtoň is particularly spot on.” Alena Slezáková, idnes.cz

A novel based on the figure of journalist, author, and translator Milena Jesenská: Kafka’s great love. The book’s format, a collection of fictitious letters from Milena Jesenská to Franz Kafka, is written as a response to Kafka’s famous Letters to Milena. “Jesenská was a real character: she used drugs, stole, loved beautiful dresses and interesting men, and was not a very good mother,” says Obermannová of the reporter. “Jesenská was one of the first to recognize that Kafka was a genius. This was her great strength: she saw things before others. Although their relationship ended, they never managed to be free of the other.”

The modern tale of a man trapped in his own lies to the two women he loves. The main heroine, spontaneous reporter Karla, falls head over heels for aging rake Mara. Paralyzed by her passion, she refuses to see that he is having a similar affair with Dana, a pragmatic lawyer. Mara is a Mythmaker, the type of man who lives for his pride, not his responsibilities. He cultivates his masculinity, but neglects everything and everyone else. He adores women, but ignores their feelings. Loving two women? It isn’t easy, but a guy can manage. And if the two women go along with it… both hold out for a glimmer of hope, addicted to love…

Ordinary men and ordinary women living their ordinary lives with their ordinary desires, hopes, and relationships, in which they will never win. An ordinary story that happens all the time and all around us. But it’s written in an extraordinary way that makes it so believable, it seems almost impossible that the author herself has not lived through it…”

This work by Bára Nesvadbová introduces her unforgettable heroine Karla: the busty, blue-eyed, blonde art critic and journalist. She drinks, smokes like a chimney, loves sex, and has no time for romance. She loves living the good life and has no interest in stability. She loves her independence and privacy, yet she doesn’t really want to be alone. She loves men, but loves the hunt more; when they fall for her, she loses interest. She lives in a permanent state of conflict, not only with her lovers, but especially with herself. After about two hours he got dressed and said: “You know, the problem is you just want me for sex. I need emotions, love!” “Isn’t it supposed to be the other way around?” I laughed. “Talk about role-playing!”

Barbara Nesvadbová (1975) was born into a family of psychiatrists. Her mother, Libuše, works with immigrants and ethnic minorities. Her famous father, Josef Nesvadba, is widely considered to be the most impressive pioneer in Czech science fiction and Barbara Nesvadbová inherited his literary talent. She received her degree in journalism and mass communication, currently serves as the editor-in-chief of Czech Harpers Bazaar. She also devotes her time to a charity – working with institutions for the mentally ill. In college she began to write short essays about sex, relationships and the quest for Mr. Right. These led to her first collection of stories in 1997: Schnitzel – fixers (Řízkaři). She followed these up with the novels Rough Life (Život nanečisto) and A Diary of a Bitch (Bestiář), which served as the basis for eponymous film. Her most successful book thus far has been Mythmaker (Pohádkář), which was also published as an audio-book and film. The last book Girlfriend (Přítelkyně) is a collection of two novellas, whose heroines attempt to cope with the loss of independence that accompanies every romantic relationship.
