The Obama Presidential Center Location: Jackson Park, South Side Chicago

I decided to use this project as an opportunity to address an area of conflict between the Obama Foundation and the residents of South Side Chicago regarding the Obama Presidential Center. There is an issue of inclusion between the Obama Foundation with its global outlook and the South Siders who fear they will be left out because of that global focus. They want the center to be about Chicago. To address and remediate this disjunction, I proposed a design that seeks to both serve and satisfy the desires of the Obama Foundation, while also connecting and serving South Side Chicago. I accomplished this by devising a structure that creates gestures in the landscape that encourage public use through its placement at the South end of the park facing 63rd Street and “The Greener Line. The green roof, which acts as an extension to the park, offers views of South Side and the rest of Chicago. The transparent building allows for a visual interaction between the interior and exterior. The outdoor amphitheater allows guests of the Obama Foundation to share their culture and arts with South Side residents and vice versa. The Obama Presidential Center now becomes more engaged and inclusive with the local community.

The Greener Line

Location: 63rd St, South Side Chicago The Greener Line is a regenerative effort along 63rd Street that acts as a spine for a dispersed solar network for the community that aims to keep residents in the Woodlawn community where they are, while helping to reduce the cost of living for residents. The Greener Line also acts as a connection between the Cottage Grove stop on the Green Line train and the Obama Presidential Center at Jackson Park, reestablishing a link between Jackson Park and the Green Line train that was lost decades ago.

There’s A World Going On Underground Location: DuSable Park, Chicago

“There’s A World Going on Underground” is a study on private spaces that possess an expressive quality. This concept was generated through an extensive precedent study of two public pools: the Frauenbad Stadhausqui in Zurich, Switzerland and the Copenhagen Harbor Bath in Copenhagen, Denmark. Through my analyses of these two sites, I discovered that both pools were connected by a shared theme of exhibitionism and visibility. For the pool design, I chose to invert the concept of exhibition, so that bathing would no longer be an activity observed by an outsider, but rather an experiential performance done by and for the individual participant. In the development of my design, I decided that the pool structure would be buried underground, allowing for a large park to be designed on the site. Only the entry to the structure and sculptural light wells that communicate the architectural language of the interior spaces below would be revealed in the park’s landscaping. Through its unique shape, underground placement, and use of natural light, as well as interior ambient lighting, this public pool becomes a wonderful, other-worldly space for personal performance and expression in downtown Chicago.
