Light Museum -studied the connection between Light and Space in order to create the precise multi-level of light.

Church X Community Design -used the concept of co-exist to mix the sacred church and the noisy community center together. Hexagonal Elements Re-design -used this shape to redefine and to renew the old building’s facade.

Floating Fishermen Housing X Market -extended the utilization of the hexagonal elements and put them on the ocean in order to substitute the old fishermen Housing.

ABOUT ME

CONNIE (Yu-Ning) JAN

I am a recent Architecture graduate from Tamkung University, Taiwan. During my five years of study, I have gained many experiences and developed my skills both as an individual as well as a designer. Prior to my graduation design, I generally used Rhino and Sketchup on my computer as tools to assist in every project. However, for my graduation design, an inspiration came and I decided to use only a penknife and my instinct to carve my project from Styrofoam. With my passion as my driving force, I believed in myself and slowly my peers started to as well that I could accomplish something that is usually done with the help of computer tools. I was pleasantly surprised by my abilities to accomplish such a project without the help of machinery and I aim to search for more possibilities of how human minds can go beyond technologies or even connect with it. My passion for Arts and Architecture will never cease.

1_Light Museum / Light Studies

Lighting is crucial in the city, although we cannot experience it without it going through certain mediums. The mediums light go through in a place can determine an individual’s mood and how they feel about it. In this case, I created a Natural Light Museum in Taipei city starting from a series of light and space studies in order to discover an effective way to create multi-levels of light.

2015 -16 GRADUATION PROJECT ZHONG SHAN DISTRICT, TAIPEI PROF. YEN WEN SHAO

In terms of visual effects, people have gradually transformed ideas to concrete actions. It all started with the famous painting “The Maids of Honour” in the 17th century, which has simply extended our attention to the invisible gazing field constructed by the painting’s characters. And the Flaneur in the 19th century, France, which started to emphasizie the entertainment came up with the moving of the visualality.

2_City WanderLand- A journey interweaving with DREAM and REALITY.

F

urthermore, the Flaneur Effect has become a new pattern of the consumption at that time. Both of them has extended to all aspects of urban life and became inseparable. The desire to participate personally has become more necessary than just watching. What interests me the most is the perception that comes alongside with the experience. People are constantly attracted to new stimulus, yet it be exploring high end clothing stores or to those adventuring in the underground streets. All the stops one makes may seem abrupt. However, it is until you see the next exit that you being to notice the weight on your hand and eventually you look back. Only to find unfamiliar scene back on the ground.

-Manifesto

of the concept

It was such a strange experience as if you just had a dream in the city. In the novel “Alice in Wonderland”, it also has an unexpected interpretation of the subconscious that being shuttled through reality and dream. From the scale conversion to the use of the color for dreams. Everything seems to be reasonable and real at that time even though they are truly different from the reality. This is when I was inspired to investigate whether or not I have the chance to create a similar dream like state experience in Taipei city, and to discover the limitations of visual perception.

the renewal of the zhongshan-shuanlian Mrt Underground Street in Taipei, Taiwan.

A

s a matter of fact, the closer you approach the works, the more authentic you would perceive. This idea was pronounced by Robert Morris, who always values the relationship between works and their surroundings. It is not allowed to define works and environments separately, which means the position that the works have being set has become more and more crucial.

However, who will really ask themselves what kind of heart resonance that they had from the works in front of them, while efficiency is everything nowadays? James Terrell has brought forward the “ SLOW ART MOVEMENT”, he wondered if there were any possibilities to extend the time of viewing works to an hour or more after he realized that it had only taken him 13 seconds to finish enjoying the great painting “MONALISA”.

My strategy was to use this multi-curvature form of building to break through the original linear space, which has separated people’s activity area and failed to enhance the underground shopping street for a really long time. Furthermore, due to the up and down curvature interweaving paths and countless entrances that I designed, people can possibly forget about the time and go through their own fascinating journeys in the city--WanderLand.

2015 SPRING PROJECT TAF INNOVATION BASE, DA ANN DISTRICT, TAIPEI

PROF. STEPHEN ROE

3_Urban Wall

The TAF Innovation Base was once one of the oldest airforce headquarters in Taiwan, but It has been transformed into a cultural and creative industry to serve different kinds of exhibiton and art installation. In this project, I started from a case study to study building ventilation due to different kinds of building forms, and used Grasshopper to assist the design in order to create more possibilities. The program I chose was a housing and outdoor exhibition area and the type of building I used was Urban Wall; therefore, I used porosities, curvature building form and the liftup of the buildings on the ground to enhance the ventilation and the quality of the living in the city. To find out the possibilities of the space usage in the hexagonal form, I tried to re-model one of my old projects --Church X Community design-- for the preparation of the upcoming design --the Floating Fish Market.

-Conclusion from vasari -Housing Unit with Facade Design

- Ventilation is better with more porosity

- the more narrow the lines get, the slower the wind flow.

- OTHER FACILITIES

- the more gentle the walls get, the smoother the wind flow.

LIBRARY

- the higher the walls get, the slower the wind flow.

green high line coffee house

We seems to be tiny like a flower, grass or dewdrop under the embrace of the mother nature. We have to accept the truth that one day this world will take us back. Due to this fact, I wish to provide a place for people to get along with the GREEN HIGH LINE and the PLANT NET WORK i create. With those we could share the Intermediary Space between church and community center.

2014 FALL PROJECT MAWAN, HONG KONG PROF. YING-CHANG YU

Due to the fact that the old Mawan Fishermen Village in Hong Kong has been discarded for a long while, I decided to regenerate its value and used the hard and stable features of the Hexagonal Elements from the previous study, to substitute the old woodstick fishermen housing, and gave them more public spaces--such as coffee shop, fish market and lecture hall-- for visitors to stay as well as learn from the tradition.

5_Body / Machine

In this project, I was practicing the ability to manipulate animals or insects’ behaviour or movement and connected them with the human body. Being a member of the society, we all need to work in groups to achieve certain goals, so it is really important to learn how to cooperate with others through body languages. In fact, the whole procedure is to get to know and understand ourselves.
