Turn everyday items into unique surfaces for to-do lists. 1. Select items with suitable areas for painting and for writing messages. We chose a serving tray and a metal dustpan (#112228). 2. Using painter’s tape, cover any surfaces that you don’t want painted. Lightly sand the untaped wooden surfaces for better paint coverage. 3. Using a foam brush or roller, apply several coats of chalkboard paint (#203261), and let dry. Then remove the painter’s tape. Write messages on the surfaces with chalk.

biglooks chic storage Put photos in plain view with these pretty boxes. 1. Collect an assortment of shoe boxes in various sizes. Using wallpaper of your choice and masking tape, wrap each box and lid separately like you would wrap a gift.
2. Choose decorative knobs that complement your selected wallpaper patterns. A variety of knobs can be found in the hardware department at Lowe’s.
3. Remove the included bolt from each knob. On an end panel of the shoe box, center the knob low enough to allow space for the lid. Using scissors, puncture a hole, and push the knob through it.
4. To secure, reattach the bolt to the knob from the inside of the box. If needed, further secure the knobs using a hot-glue gun.
metallic wall art Create shapes from copper tubing to add interest in any room. 1. Gently bend and stretch a length of lightweight copper tubing (#43498) into a shape that suits your wallspace. Avoid creating sharp corners, which will cause the tubing to weaken and break.
2. Hold the tubing against the wall, and determine the locations for securing. Screw 11⁄4-inch cup hooks into the wall at these places, and then slide the tubing into each hook.

hanging bouquet Trade a plain vase for this inventive floral container. 1. Using a large nail and a hammer, punch two holes into a 1-quart paint can (#27318), opposite each other and about 1 inch from the top. (Be careful of sharp edges around the holes made in the paint can.) 2. Thread one or two lengths of jute twine (#66510) through the holes for a handle, knotting the ends of the twine to secure it. 3. Fill the container with fresh or dried flowers, and hang from a doorknob or decorative hook. 4. Repeat these steps to create multiple hanging containers. Find step-by-step video demonstrations for two more similar vase projects in our Unwind & Design section at LowesCreativeIdeas.com. The Decorative Wallpaper Vases project uses wallpaper to dress up paint cans, and the Cornucopias project uses contractor’s paper to hold flowers.

Unwind & Design embellished lampshades Step 1: Measure the circum-
ference of the lampshade’s base. Choose the number of prisms you want to use, and determine the equidistant width between each prism. With a pencil, mark the locations on the shade. Step 2: Thread each prism’s wire through the shade at the marked points. Pinch the wires to secure. Step 3: Measure and then cut a length of ribbon to fit around the shade. (To create ruffles, the ribbon needs to be longer than the circumference.) Step 4: Using a hot-glue gun, apply beads of glue along the shade’s base; press the ribbon to secure.
If you haven’t hosted one of these parties yet, now is your chance. This is our third Unwind & Design project featured in the magazine, plus we have more monthly projects as well as video demonstrations and playlists available online. This month’s project shows you how to create the embellished lampshades pictured here. You only need a few materials and good friends to join you.The project should take approximately 30 minutes to complete, but with all the talking, laughing, and munching on goodies, your party likely will last a bit longer—like ours did! So lay out the drop cloth, fire up the glue gun, and use our ideas and tips to host your own Unwind & Design party. PRODUCE D BY ALLISON R. BAN KS

headboard Adorned with a cheerful wallpaper pattern and two paint colors, simple doors can become a focal point in a bedroom. Here, a floral wallpaper border is attached on the door panels to complement the striped paper on the walls. You can match your decor and add your own twist by selecting another color palette with different coordinating wallpaper patterns. Joining the doors with hinges allows you to fold the headboard for easy transportation or to use it as a folding screen.

make this pretty project General: The overall dimensions of this headboard are approximately 11⁄2 inches deep, 60 inches wide, and 80 inches high, making it most suitable for a full- (as shown) or queen-size mattress. Step 1: Place the two doors on a flat surface (or on sawhorses) with the two long edges facing and the smallest panels on the top. Step 2: On the front of the doors, apply painter’s tape around the borders of the upper eight panels. Using an angled paintbrush, apply two coats of light-pink paint inside the borders. Allow to dry, and then remove the tape. Step 3: Tape around the panels again, but place the tape inside the borders this time. Using an angled paintbrush, apply two coats of dark-pink paint. Allow to dry, and then remove the tape. Step 4: Carefully measure the dimensions of the raised portions of each light-pink panel.
Lowe’s list
Mark and measure these dimensions on the back of the wallpaper, and cut out the eight pieces using a utility knife. Attach the wallpaper to the raised panels per the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow to dry. Step 5: Turn the doors over. Join the doors by attaching two continuous hinges using the included hardware, along the seam of the doors’ long edges. Step 6: To attach the door to the wall, place a large self-leveling picture hanger on each corner of the headboard. (The door will be resting on the wall, but not hanging from it.) Lean the headboard against the wall at the appropriate angle, and then mark the placement of the picture hangers on the wall; install the appropriate wall fasteners. (Visit Lowes.com/Fasteners to find out which type of fasteners will work best for your wall.) Secure the picture hangers to the wall fasteners to stabilize the headboard.

With their kids grown and out of the house, these empty nesters decided it was time to create a bit of breathing room. They transformed an unused spare bedroom, located across the hall from the master suite, into a generous, richly detailed closet and dressing area. The space is organized with shelves, hanging rods, and several task-oriented cabinetry stations. The center island —created from two dressers butted back to back—offers a main focal point, as well as storage space and a spot for accessories.

This closet was beginning to feel more like a storage locker than a shared dressing space—with scarves, belts, neckties, and handbags spilling from the shelves. 1 Three rounded shelving units, stacked vertically in a corner, turn an otherwise unused niche into a functional place to store handbags, hats, and accessories. 2 The extra space between the upper cabinetry and the ceiling is used to stack spare pillows and blankets. 3 Clothing rods mounted at 79-inch heights leave ample room for dresses, coats, and long skirts.

This space overlooks a pretty stretch of hillside peppered with boulders, lending a secluded feel in the natural setting. The couple wanted to create an upbeat, casual, yet sophisticated, kitchen design that harmonizes with the views. The homeowners changed the floor plan in order to bring more openness into the kitchen and mimic the great outdoors. Because they entertain quite frequently, they wanted the area to flow easily for small and large groups.A generous-sized island provides the perfect place for guests to perch while the homeowners cook. It also enhances the kitchen’s airy feel and helps to define the space. Sleek appliances are paired with natureinspired materials, while bold dabs of red elevate the color palette. The result is a kitchen that packs a double punch—a visual “wow” and a streamlined workflow.

1 The maple cabinetry has a sheer topcoat that allows the wood’s beautiful graining to show through. Bar pulls, placed vertically on the cabinetry doors, bridge traditional and modern styles. 2 One-inch mosaic glass tiles, with russet, cinnamon, and terra-cotta tones, make the backsplash a shimmering focal point. 3 Earth-friendly bamboo flooring adds warmth to the room. 4 The energy-efficient counter-depth refrigerator features large-drawer storage, lockable exterior controls, and a temperature-controlled drawer that keeps food fresher longer. 5 A tambour door (which functions like the front of a rolltop desk) conceals small appliances and other items at the hospitality center. 6 Open shelving keeps dishware within easy reach and in plain sight. Aluminum-framed doors with glass inserts lend a distinctive touch.

THE CHALLENGE: The kitchen needed
to accommodate the homeowners’ busy lifestyles, which include regular entertaining. The couple also wanted the kitchen to celebrate the natural landscape just beyond the windows. THE SOLUTION: Simplifying the floor plan allows for efficient traffic flow and creates a variety of areas for guests, including island space and a hospitality center with a sink and beverage chiller.

If you have a cooktop that is built into your kitchen’s island, you still can reap the benefits of a traditional range hood without compromising style. A free-mounted range hood has the features of a retractable or wall-mounted hood, but easily mounts to the ceiling over your island.
Retractable vent systems are ideal for islands where an overhead hood may not fit, or for cooktops where a concealed system can create a clean work area.
Wall mounts, the most widely used vent systems, work with any cooktop or stove that has a backsplash and usually can be vented outside easily. Use your cooktop’s width to find a range hood that fits.

magical makeover: bath
With universal design, homeowners get it all—beauty, comfort, and function.
rethinking the
bath
universal design
When a bath is designed for individual needs and different life stages, whether current, anticipated, or even unforeseen, it truly becomes a place for peace of mind and relaxation. Imagine an expectant mother whose center of gravity is awry—grab bars help steady her while getting in and out of the tub. For a man with an old football knee injury, a zero-threshold shower makes daily tasks less painful. And open sink bases leave room for those who require seating, in a wheelchair or otherwise. All of these solutions and many others are applied through the principles of universal design. Universal design is about products that are more comfortable to use and environments that make life easier for as many individuals as possible, regardless of age or ability. Not long ago, the perception of universal design was that style succumbed to accessibility. Today, there are more and more universally designed products available in the latest
colors and finishes, so homeowners get the best of all worlds. This bath reflects today’s styles and trends—from the dual-use layout to the sleek products to the accessible features.Welcome to the universal design bath from Lowe’s and Ohio State University. We hope you enjoy this private tour especially for the readers of Lowe’s Creative Ideas for Home and Garden.

Lowe’s and Ohio State University have teamed up to tell the story of universal design. In 2006, they partnered to build a universally designed kitchen exhibit at the university’s Farm Science Review. The exhibit was toured by thousands of people, including the general public as well as interior design students from several colleges, and Lowe’s received thousands of letters from the readers of Lowe’s Creative Ideas for Home and Garden, eager to learn more about universal design. Because of that success and a commitment to this principle, the two decided to build a universally designed bath at the Farm Science Review for 2007. “We’re very excited about this opportunity to get the word out about universal design,” says Melissa Birdsong, Lowe’s Vice President of Trend, Design & Brand. “We hope even more people will learn how easy it can be to make a home accessible for all—and make it look fabulous as well.”

subway tiles

Rectangular tiles, often called subway tiles, are showing up in the latest design showrooms in various sizes, colors, and styles. In this bath, slate-look mosaic subway tiles also serve a universal design purpose. On the shower floor, the increased number of grout lines decreases the risk of slipping. The tiles add a chic look to the bath while also providing a practical element. For proper drainage, the shower floor slopes slightly toward the drain.

1 The zero-threshold shower makes this space accessible for anyone and provides spa-like style. Without the use of a shower door, the only transition from the main floor to the shower floor is a visual one—the tiles change from oversized 18-inch tiles to small 1- x 3-inch subway tiles. On the shower walls, a row of glass tiles breaks up the spread of the 12-inch tiles. 2 Two showerheads—both featuring polished-nickel finishes—give freedom of movement for anyone standing or sitting. The handheld showerhead can move up and down the slide bar. 3 Grab bars found throughout the bath at different angles and heights offer stability for those who need it. 4 Adjustable body jets add luxury to the shower. 5 A built-in bench provides seating and a place for toiletries.
trouble-free transition 6 Using expansive 18-inch tiles on the floor limits the number of transitions and provides a more even surface. Placed on the diagonal to visually expand the space, the sand-colored tiles are combined with darker slate-look tiles.

The faucets have single levers that are easy to grasp and use with one hand. An 18-inch chair-height toilet is positioned so that the user has at least 18 inches of comfort room on the sides as well. Grab bars are placed in the tub and shower and beside the toilet, helping with stability and with sitting and standing. The vanity includes ample knee space for seated users, and the sink base does not restrict movement underneath the vanity. There are limited thresholds—or no thresholds—in the entryways, on the floor, and in the shower. Multiple sources of light, including general, task, and in-cabinet lighting fixtures, provide sufficient illumination in the room.

private comfort 1 Placing the toilet at least 18 inches from the adjacent walls allows freedom of movement for anyone, including those in a wheelchair or using a walker. At standard chair height, an ADA approved 18-inch-high toilet is easier to use because it doesn’t require as much bending. Grab bars also help with sitting and standing.
2 The vanity areas feature KraftMaid Passport Series cabinetry, which offers special height and access options. The dual-use design includes taller (36-inch) and shorter (32-inch) cabinet heights. Tilting mirrors adjust for users who are standing or seated. 3 The cabinetry features 9-inch-high and 6-inch-deep toe-kicks. 4 Solid-surface countertops with a contrasting color strip in the middle make the edges easier to see. The D-ring pulls are simple to grasp. 5 The self-rimming, sloping sink is designed to sit beyond the edge of the countertop for access without reaching. The lever-handle faucet can be turned on and off with one hand.

Use the color wheel you learned in art class to create a scheme for your home. The basic color wheel shows colors at their purest, but most people prefer using lighter or darker values (created by adding white or black) of these basic colors. Green and red are complements, as are yellow and purple. complex schemes are created using three or four colors that are equidistant on the color wheel. A home that exudes depth and vitality. THE SOLUTION: Bold, Warm Colors
BROWN AND BLACK For rich color that also can serve as a neutral backdrop for your home’s decor, consider a shade of brown or black. Browns such as Journey or Turkish Coffee allow bright colors— think whites and chartreuse—to stand out. Dark Kettle Black and Very Black coat walls in brilliant depth. For a more subdued shade of black that incorporates gray, try Blindfold. YELLOW Draw inspiration from nature by creating a bright, sunny room that will perk you up even on the dreariest of days. Fresh yellows, such as Tulip from the Laura Ashley Home collection, revitalize a room and make it a cheery escape. Richer tones, such as Buttered Toffee, also bring warm energy to a room but allow for deeper color.
RED If you want to ignite excitement in a room—perhaps your kitchen or dining room—fire up the walls with Radiant Red or Bright Red.These intrepid colors give off energy that can inspire you to cook a five-course meal and encourage your guests to let lively conversation flow while they dine. If you like the idea of red in your home’s palette, but you’re not ready for an absolute crimson, try a cooler shade that contains more blue and purple, such as Montpelier Red Velvet. ORANGE Known to stimulate appetite as well as energy, fresh shades of orange, such as Ripe Pomegranate and Roasted Pumpkin, enliven your walls with brilliant color that excites the senses. For a paler yet invigorating shade, try Orange Ochre or Homestead Apricot.

Maps and a paper lantern (#237095) encourage vacation plans—or dreams— with this travel center. To achieve the look, decoupage maps inside the bookcase and on the shelf, if desired. For the lantern, first cut a small hole in the back panel. Then hang the lantern from the top panel using the hardware included, pushing the cord through the small hole. A vibrant paint color and favorite mementos personalize the space. Bookcase paint:

with translucent-glass or highquality plastic give the best of terrariums—the see-through effect—without having the complexity of a self-sustaining ecosystem. Low-maintenance plants, such as succulents and cacti, need a minimal amount of water and fertilizer.Try the following ideas to create your own laid-back planters.

feeder Paint a cedar bird feeder a bright hue, and add some desert flair by planting colorful red, green, and yellow cacti inside. This fun and easy project is great for kids. A variety of sizes and styles of cedar feeders are available at Lowe’s.
Step 1: Remove the plastic hanger and windows from the feeder. Lightly sand, prime, and spray-paint the wood; we used green apple (#118990). Let dry. Step 2: Replace the plastic windows. Add a 1-inch layer of pearl stone soil cover (#139514) inside the feeder, and then add a 2-inch layer of potting soil. Step 3: Plant small cacti or succulents in the potting soil. Add a shallow layer of the soil cover around the plants. Water lightly.

globes Line up a few of these tiny planters down the center of a table for a natural look. Or set them in a windowsill, where the globe will catch the sunlight and cast a beautiful glow on the bright-green succulents. The plants can grow in the shallow soil, but you may need to replant them in larger pots if they become too big for the globes.
Step 1: Plant a small succulent or cactus in a 1-inch layer of potting soil in a 4-inch-wide clay saucer. Water lightly. Sprinkle pearl stone soil cover (#139514) around the plant. Step 2: Place a clear seeded-glass globe (#87316) over the saucer. (You can glue the globe in place, or simply let it rest on the saucer.)

fixture Try giving a basic ceiling light a colorful upgrade with paint, and then turn it into a container for shapely plants. The prismatic glass of the fixture contributes a nice texture to the scene, while the purplish-red paint color complements the bromeliad’s warm organic hues.
Step 1: Use painter’s tape to cover the glass areas of the ceiling fixture drum (#78219). Step 2: Spray-paint the white plastic areas; we used claret wine (#40180). Allow to dry, and then remove the tape. Step 3: Add a 1⁄2-inch layer of pearl stone soil cover (#139514), and add a 2-inch layer of potting soil. Step 4: Plant a succulent or bromeliad in the potting soil. Add a shallow layer of the stone soil cover around the plant. Water lightly.

Hang this feeder-turned-planter in front of a window, or outdoors on a covered porch, and watch your plant grow. You also can place this planter on a table near a natural light source. Note: This project is fairly airtight (except for some airflow from the bottom), so you will see condensation inside the glass.

Lowe’s Heroes
Lowe’s employees in the Greater Dallas area help improve local Boys and Girls Clubs during a summerlong project.
Volunteers in the Lowe’s Heroes program renovated several Boys and Girls Clubs to provide better facilities for kids’ activities and enrichment.
All children need a safe place to learn and grow. Thanks to hundreds of Lowe’s employees, 10 facilities can provide that environment. During the 2006 Lowe’s Heroes project, 33 stores in Dallas and Fort Worth,Texas, teamed up to renovate local Boys and Girls Clubs for youngsters between the ages of 6 and 18.The clubs provide youth programs and activities for those who cannot afford, or may lack access to, other community programs. To begin the project, site assessments of the Boys and Girls Clubs were conducted to identify their needs.“In general, funding was desperately needed to improve the aesthetics, safety, and overall standards of these facilities,” explains Jack Fuller, the North Dallas store manager.“They simply

were not conducive to the kids’ learning and development.” Improvements for the clubs included painting, lighting and wall repair, safety upgrades, and basic remodeling and landscaping. The project that Jack found the most touching was the renovation of an Olympicsize swimming pool, which would have been shut down if the Lowe’s Heroes program had not intervened.“Restoring this pool will impact a large number of kids for many years,” Jack says. “There are 40 or 50 examples just like that pool—where the overall impact just can’t be measured.” Most of the work took place during the summer of 2006.“We had more than 300 employees give their time—over 7,000 hours of skilled labor—for this project,”
Jack says.“The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas were also awarded a $25,000 grant from Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation to purchase project supplies for the facility renovations.” Project completion coincided with the clubs’ annual registration. Lowe’s sponsored a grand reopening event on August 15 at the Oak Cliff location in southern Dallas. Jack describes the celebration as having a “festival atmosphere for the children, [including] face painting, kids’ clinics, bounce houses, as well as food and refreshments, all free of charge.” Lowe’s Heroes is an annual companywide initiative in which Lowe’s employees conduct volunteer projects to help their communities and neighborhoods become better places to live.
