Put stemware on display.
Transform any lampshade into a stylish container.
1 . Cut an 111⁄2- x 48-inch stair tread (found in the lumber department) into two 24-inch-long pieces; a Lowe’s employee can cut the board for you. (Use the second piece to create another stemware display, or save it for a future project.) Prime the board, and apply two coats of paint (we used Valspar Signature Colors, Laura Ashley Home, Inlet Blue #LA1215, flat), allowing each coat to dry. 2 . Prime two metal brackets (#156065) with metal primer, and paint them to match the board, letting each coat dry. 3 . Place two under-cabinet stemware racks (#210024) end to end, centered on the underside of the board (as shown). With a pencil, mark the locations for pilot holes. Lay the racks aside, and drill the pilot holes with a 1⁄8-inch bit. Attach the racks using the hardware provided. 4 . Measure and mark the placement of the brackets on the wall—over studs if possible or using hollow-wall anchors if in drywall. Using #8 x 11⁄4-inch screws, hang each bracket, and then secure the board to the brackets.
1. Place a shade of your choice on a work surface with the larger rim facing up. If the shade has a bulb clip, flatten the wire as much as possible. 2. To embellish the shade, paint a simple design with the color of your choice. Allow to dry. 3. Lay the shade’s smaller rim on a 3⁄4-inch-thick foam panel (#15350), and trace around the rim with a pencil. Using a utility knife, carefully cut 1⁄4 inch inside the traced line. To reinforce the foam, cover the entire foam circle with masking tape. (Use leftover foam for multiple projects, or for protecting stored valuables.) 4. Gently press the foam circle into the shade to form a base. Because To keep cut flowers looking the lampshade is not fresher longer, add a small waterproof, you will amount of lemon-lime soda to the need to use a vase water. The sugar and citric acid inside the container to keep the water cleaner hold fresh-cut flowers and plants happier. for a festive floral display (as shown here). You also can use this container to store lightweight items.

Pretty as aPicket
Create a sturdy frame with rustic charm.
Good To Know
March is National Women’s History Month. Set aside time to read a book about a woman who has been an inspiration to you.
1. To create each frame, measure from the picket’s pointed end, and then cut four 24-inch-long pieces from the 4-inch-wide picket-fence boards. 2. On a flat surface, arrange the pieces to form an 8-inchsquare opening (as shown). Join the pieces with wood glue and two #8 x 11⁄4-inch wood screws at each intersection, drilling from the back. 3. Lightly sand the frame. Paint one side (we used Valspar Ultra Premium, Whitewashed Oak #7006-23, flat, and Valspar Signature Colors, Laura Ashley Home, Sky Blue 4 #LA1304, flat); allow to dry. Paint the other side, and allow it to dry overnight. Lightly distress the finish using sandpaper. 4. Remove the protective film from two 8- x 10-inch clear acrylic panels (#72055). Center a photo between the panels. Place the panels on the back of the frame, with 1 inch overlapping the top and bottom pickets. Predrill holes for screws using a 3⁄16-inch bit. Secure the panels to the top and bottom pickets using chrome clips (#138888) and #6 x 1⁄2-inch wood screws. 5. Attach two picture hangers (#52716) to the back of each frame for hanging. trim off the ends of each 48-inch round dowel, and then cut the dowel into nine 31⁄2-inch pieces for each coaster. Cut each 36-inch square dowel into 12 pieces for each coaster. Step 2: Add a light coat of paint or stain to each dowel piece. (Use gloves when working with stain.) Lay the pieces on a drop cloth to dry. The pieces
should be dry to the touch in about 20 minutes. If working indoors, direct a fan on the pieces to reduce drying time. Step 3: Cut two 3-foot-long pieces of twine or wire for each coaster. Group together nine round dowel pieces (or 12 of the square dowel pieces) to form a square. Tie the twine or wire around the first dowel piece, and then loop the remainder around each
piece to secure them together. Tie off and cut the excess when you reach the end. Repeat to secure the opposite end of the coaster. Hostess Tip: Give each guest a jar of polyurethane for adding a protective finish to the coasters later. You can watch a step-by-step video demonstration of this project at LowesCreativeIdeas.com.

FEELS LIKE This fresh and cheerful palette evokes the season’s energy.
Written by M E L I S S A B I R D S O N G
SPRI NG!
Nature begins to come back to life. Trees bud, flowers bloom, animals emerge from hibernation—and so do we. Lured by sunny brightness, we step into the world renewed from winter rest and ready for springtime. This season’s palette offers inspiring colors to bring that lively feeling into your home. THE NEW WHITE Used often as a backdrop for other colors, white takes center stage this spring—the brighter, the better. White accessories (pillows, rugs, and lamps) add freshness to even the most vivid color schemes. White also can act as the feature, such as a painted floor, when paired with accents of yellow and green. Together, blooming colors and clean whites celebrate the sensation of spring, indoors and out.
BLOOMING HUES What’s the first color that appears
in spring? Green! Soothing mint and bright foliage are two striking variations of this season’s signature color. Other tones also incorporate a hint of green, including light, airy blues and deeper gray teals. Honey-hued yellows and subtle shaded purples suggest spring’s first flowers—daffodil and crocus. A room painted with a combination of these colors, such as yellow and sky blue, is both relaxing and rejuvenating.

Recycling
❉
Make recycling a household priority by incorporating specialized storage.
PitchingIn ▲
Being good stewards of the Earth’s resources is important to this family—they collect plastic, paper, aluminum, and glass for their community’s curbside recycling program. But they needed a place to store the items before the weekly pickup. Luckily, an empty space in their kitchen pantry offered just the spot for this worthwhile practice. And the pantry doors conceal the storage center from the rest of the kitchen.
Chart your progress
Choose recycled The items you recycle today might end up in the products you buy tomorrow for your next home or garden project. Keep an eye out for these eco-friendly products at Lowe’s. FLOR carpet tiles (shown at left) Many of the carpet designs are made from recycled or renewable resources. And you can replace one or two of these versatile tiles instead of replacing the entire floor or rug. ■ DuPont Garden Products Long-Lasting Rubber Mulch Using recycled rubber from sources such as old tires, this innovative mulch provides superior coverage and is guaranteed for 12 years.
ChoiceDek composite decking The engineered components are composed of recovered wood fiber and recycled plastics, and the decking does not require chemical dipping or water sealing. ■

The homeowners created a simple interactive chart to track each family member’s weekly contributions. To make your own, simply select a piece of 1⁄4-inch-thick plywood, and cut it to the desired size. (A Lowe’s employee can cut the board for you.) Apply three coats of magnetic primer (#115535), and allow to dry. Next, sketch a grid large enough for your family, and paint each column a different color. Let dry. Write family names and days of the week on the board using a permanent marker or paint pen. Attach picture hangers (#52716) to the back of the board, and hang. Use magnets on the board to show each person’s progress.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY TED TUCKER
▲ Use teaching tools To separate the recyclables, the homeowners added a durable, easy-to-clean 12-bin organizer (#226794) and arranged the bins by color and category. For example, the red bins are for plastic and the blue bins are for cardboard. The color-coded system helps teach children which items are recyclable and how to group the items for their community’s recycling process. The parents consolidate their recyclables into larger bins provided by the city. The bins are kept in the garage and transported to the street for curbside collection once a week.

This table was created with outdoor planters and durable tile, so it will withstand the elements if used on a patio.
Step 1: Lightly sand the pine
Step 4: Attach each mounting

“When I’m in this room, all my stress melts away ...”
WHAT SHE DID Driven by a passion for yoga and a desire for relaxation, this homeowner created an open space for exercising, reading, resting, and generally rejuvenating, with only a few simple updates.
The transformation begins with a palette of pale blues and grays to wrap the room in gentle color. The existing hardwood floors are covered with a soft, textured rug. A cozy corner invites rest and provides the perfect spot to sip a cup of hot tea. Functional items, such as a water cooler, large mirror, and a shelving unit, facilitate yoga practice. The combination of light, colors, textures, and decorative elements results in a space that the homeowner describes as “functional, yet soothing— nourishing the mind, body, and soul.”

Perfect for meditation and relaxation, the cool color

A large mirror hung in the center of the wall helps
keep yoga postures in check. The mirror was created with one 24- x 36-inch mirror and four 8- x 36-inch mirrors, secured horizontally to a piece of plywood using mirror glue. As a finishing touch, decorative basket-weave moulding was attached to frame the mirror.

LAKE HOUSE LIVING This vacation home is a fantasy-turned-reality for one close-knit family. To make more room for all three generations, they renovated their outdoor living area and created plenty of space to relax, entertain, and spend quality time together.
The design of this project celebrates the melding of indoor and outdoor spaces. Two separate rooms (the pavilion and the deck) have their own functions but still feel connected.

WHAT THEY DID THE CHALLENGE: These homeowners needed more space for outdoor entertaining. The existing deck had weathered poorly over the years, and an outdoor shed was not family-friendly. They also wanted better access from the house down to the lake. THE SOLUTION: The family replaced the old deck with an attractive and long-lasting composite material. They also tore down the shed and, in its place, built a covered, screened-in pavilion with a kitchenette. Stairs and a small lower deck provide a smooth transition to the lake.

his family’s shared second home is always bustling—and at times, busting at the seams— with children and grandchildren. In order to accommodate their growing family, they decided to expand the outdoor living space. The new covered, screened-in pavilion is the perfect spot for the family to enjoy the fresh air and view of the lake while staying warm during cool nights. A Cultured Stone fireplace and a convenient kitchenette make the area cozy as well as functional. A sliding screen door connects the pavilion to the new deck. Outside, a large built-in gas grill provides ample space for cooking burgers and veggies for the entire family. A small lower deck offers a landing for folks headed down to the water. Here, parents can watch their kids swim or simply enjoy a relaxing, quiet moment closer to the lake. To tie together the look of the new outdoor entertaining area, Cultured Stone was chosen for the outside deck as well as the pavilion fireplace. “It has a great feel that’s rustic and sturdy,” one family member says. “It’s perfect for a house at the lake.” Throughout the space, a warm color palette of green, gold, and brown is classic and mimics nature. Even accessories, such as lanternstyle outdoor light fixtures, contribute to the homespun feel. True to the homeowners’ original intentions, the new space lovingly brings together many generations of this large family. A sliding screened barn door contributes country charm while separating the pavilion area from the deck.
“Being at the lake house is all about being outside and being with family.”

MAGICAL
touches
his child’s bedroom needed a fresh look, and when
her parents decided to make over the space, they knew exactly what theme to choose. “She is a huge fan of fairy princesses,” her mother says. A fondness for fairies inspired the pretty pastel color palette, which features pink walls and hints of green and blue that set the stage for a magical scene. To keep their budget in check, the homeowners dressed up the room’s existing furnishings with paint, appliqués, and charming accents, such as the fairy-themed wallpaper border. Then they incorporated several storage and organizational solutions, neutral-colored carpet, and accessories with a whimsical look for added personality. With a bit of creativity, the homeowners designed a fairy-tale space that delights their little princess. “Our daughter tells visitors, ‘You’ve got to see my beautiful new room!’” her mother says.

Trend Update My Space We’re all unique, and we want our homes to reflect our style. This girl’s bedroom has many personalized touches, from the headboard to the window treatments. Consider these ideas to incorporate your individuality into any room. Use items that either are handmade or just look like it, such as the cute wallpaper shown here. Add monograms to pillows, slip covers, and other accessories for personalizing your décor. Embellish ready-made pieces with paint, fabric, knobs, and more, making them functional as well as one-of-a-kind.
Good To Know When buying wallpaper, make sure all the rolls have the same run number or dye lot to ensure consistent color. Write down the dye lot or run number for future reference.
