WAYS TO WELCOME SUMMER

WELCOME

Let’s build something

together

Being a hands-on home improver

comes naturally to me—as the daughter and granddaughter of “makers” who taught me to learn by doing. Their can-do spirit continues to inspire my project planning. And events in my life, such as my daughter’s June wedding, keep me motivated to get them done. This issue of Lowe’s Creative Ideas for Home and Garden is packed with wonderful ideas to inspire you. There’s a terrific sunroom makeover that helps blur the line between indoor and outdoor living. We’ve also designed two exciting exterior face-lifts that demonstrate simple ways to boost curb appeal. And nothing says home like having a space where almost anyone can maneuver independently. Be sure to check out design cues for accessibility in the Habitat for Humanity home in our community feature. It’s the perfect time of year to get things checked off our to-do lists. So let’s get going . . . it’s almost June!

Using a marker, trace the template onto the back of a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet (#151360). Repeat for the number of place mats you need. 3. Use sharp utility scissors to cut the pieces of carpet. (One square yard or 3 linear feet of carpet should yield four place mats.)

lights (at least 6 feet in length) around a 6-foot-long bamboo stake (#56475). Leave about 10 inches at one end of the stake free of lights. Secure the lights to the stake using clear packing tape. 2. Push the end of the stake (that is free of lights) into the ground. Connect an outdoor extension cord to the lights, hiding and securing the cord as needed. 3. Thread five paper lanterns (#237095) onto the stake as shown. Gently bend each lantern’s internal wire frame to clear the stake. You will not need the electrical cording included with the lanterns.

Good To Know

Avoid using this project during rain or heavy wind. Store the lanterns and the stake indoors after use in good weather.

For the horizontal hanging version of this project: Use only

four lanterns so that 10 inches at each end of the stake is free of lights and lanterns. Cut and then attach a length of nylon twine (#91114) to each end of the stake. Tie the other ends of twine to porch posts or hooks, making sure the stake hangs evenly. Dress up any meal with a painted blind turned into a table runner.

1. Select a window blind in a width that suits your table and is at least 1 foot longer than the table. We used a 36- x 72-inch natural-colored faux-bamboo blind (#164143). Remove the plastic hardware and the screws from each end of the blind. Slide the long plastic end caps off the valance, and reattach them to the ends of the blind to create smooth edges. 2. Place the blind on a work surface that’s covered with paper or a drop cloth. Spray both sides of the blind with at least two coats of red paint (#244157), allowing each coat to dry completely. 3. Spray both sides of the blind with a clear top coat (#39449), and allow to dry. Arrange the finished blind on your table. Organize cleaning supplies with this handy bucket.

1. You can find a plastic pail in the paint department. 2. Using a 9⁄64-inch drill bit, drill several pairs of holes about 1⁄2 inch apart, spaced evenly around the pail’s rim. 3. Insert cable ties (#222127) —found in the hardware department—into the holes to form loops that will hold tall, thin items. Join the ends of the cable ties. To make larger loops for bigger items, simply secure more cable ties together.

Good To Know You also could use this pail for craft supplies, gardening tools, or a child’s carryall for trips to the beach.

OUTDOOR LIVING

Children’s Garden

❉ Plant for Success Ensure that your child’s first foray into gardening will be successful. Choose small plants from the garden center rather than growing vegetables from seed. ■ Opt for hybrid varieties, which better resist disease. ■ Set out plants after the last predicted frost. ■

How does your garden grow? With help from your kids.

EatYour

M AY / J U N E 2 0 0 7

Tomatoes, especially smaller varieties, make great plants for a children’s garden.

Get children involved in the process between planting and harvesting. Mulch around plants to hold the water in and keep the weeds out. ■ Entrust the kids with the job of watering plants a few times a week. ■ Loosely tie off plants to stakes using twine as the plants start growing tall. ■

Call them fruits (their true scientific classification), not veggies. ■ Plant tomatoes in full sun for best results. ■ Try cherry tomatoes; they’ll reach maturity earlier.

Cultivating vegetables and fruits can be rewarding for children as well as adults. As a fun project that you can do together, a kid-friendly garden teaches children how plants grow and where veggies come from—before they find their way to the supermarket. And for more helpful planting tips on vegetable gardens, visit Lowes.com/Vegetables. Lowe’s Creative Ideas

TA K E Y O U R P I C K

Point of View

Kids love pumpkins! Now your child can grow the mother of all jack-o-lanterns with Dill’s Atlantic Giant pumpkin seeds (#209143), available only at Lowe’s. These pumpkins consistently reach massive sizes; the largest on record weighed an eye-popping 1,500-plus pounds! Purchase the seeds at the Lowe’s Garden Center, and then go to LowesCreativeIdeas.com/ GiantPumpkin to chart your pumpkin’s progress with fellow growers.

Whatever your style, change bath décor elements for a quick, affordable, and functional new look.

Go Green Keep your kids and your food safe. At the Lowe’s Garden Center, you’ll find organic soil, fertilizers, and pest control products in an area dedicated to green gardening.

CLASSIC

Keep it simple with this fixture (#238544) that features an antique-nickel finish and opaque globes. Complement it with a rectangular mirror (#195276) in a pewter finish.

2

ROMANTIC Opt for timeless appeal with this fixture’s (#115618) Spanish-gold finish and Scavo glass shades. Pair it with the pretty detailing on this oval mirror (#66654).

Safety First

3

It’s a lot of fun being outside, but there are some dangers inherent to the outdoors, such as bugs and poisonous plants. Follow these tips to keep your kids out of harm’s way. ■ BANISH BUZZ By eliminating standing water, you can reduce the number of mosquitoes living in your yard. You also could buy a bug-inhibiting system.

KEEP IT CLEAN Remove large rocks and bare roots that could cause children to trip and fall. Also, make sure your yard is free of harmful plants, such as poison ivy.

STAY AWARE Be sure to watch your children when they’re playing or planting outdoors. Kids are curious and could wander, getting into unforeseen hazards. ■

White On Chosen for its light, open feel, white paint covers the upper half of the walls throughout the room. The white also meshes well with existing features, such as the window shutters, that the homeowner wanted to keep. And now, when paired with white, the green tile feels restful and serene rather than dated.

1 Mounting a shelf above the door is a clever way to utilize unused space; it also raises the eye upward. The white beaded-board ceiling lends textural interest. 2 A rectangular mirror was placed horizontally to reflect the scope of the room. Reflective accents, such as mirrors, are an easy and inexpensive way to make a space seem bigger. 3 Beneath the sink, a simple skirt was created by sewing a white fabric shower curtain. It’s attached to the sink with self-fastening strips. An opening in the skirt’s center allows easy access to the concealed plumbing and toiletries.

This homeowner unearthed the hidden potential in his forgotten backyard. You can too!

3

When looking for extra living space, this suburbanite decided to focus outdoors on his neglected backyard. With a cramped patio, a chain-link fence, and an uninviting landscape, the yard lacked style, but it was the perfect canvas for crafting a functional outdoor room. To transform the area, the homeowner extended the patio, added all-season plants, and invested in a new gas grill. Keeping costs low and impact high, he tamed his backyard jungle and created a cozy terrace ideal for sitting down with a good book or hosting an impromptu barbecue with friends.

Ready, Set, Grill 1 This stainless steel gas grill features a fully enclosed cart for strength and durability. 2 The grill’s porcelain-coated cast-iron cooking surface is perfect for preparing meats and vegetables. With a 28-burger capacity, the grill can cook enough for a large party. 3 Tea olive trees conceal the chain-link fence, while garden trellises cover part of the garage exterior. 4 The all-weather wicker construction of this chair and side table withstands extreme temperatures; the cushions are made of UV-protected fabric. 5 These gray-toned pavers fit together like puzzle pieces. They impart the natural feel of real stones but are easier to install.

the rear of this family’s house had one major thing going for it: its size. But it was only usable during the best weather. By adding sliding windows and new doors, the space is transformed into an all-season sunroom. During good weather, the open windows allow air to circulate, blurring the lines between indoors and out. When it’s cold or rainy, the homeowners can close the windows and still enjoy the space. New paint, flooring, lighting, and furnishings brighten the room and tie the look together. And now that this area is appealing to the family as well as to guests, a new hospitality center and adjacent outdoor patio with a grill make it a hot spot when the homeowners entertain.

Similarly, the outdoor patio area can easily be omitted or added in the future.

A fan works best when it’s installed 7 to 9 feet above the floor, and 10 to 12 inches below the ceiling. For ceilings above 10 feet, you’ll want to add an extension rod to lower your fan. Note: For safety, a ceiling fan should not be used in a room with ceilings lower than 8 feet.

Whether you’re indoors or out, beat the heat and save energy with a ceiling fan.

42-inch Harbor Breeze, Princess Euro (#228342) Fit for a small room, it has a shorter span, but it isn’t short on features, such as remotecontrol programming.

The larger the fan, the better it cools. A fan with a diameter of 36 to 44 inches will cool up to 225 square feet (on average, 15 x 15 feet). A fan with a diameter of 52 inches will cool a larger space, but you’ll want to use multiple fans in a room longer than 18 feet.

Q Does blade size matter? The blade width and shape will vary among fan designs. Larger blades will turn at a slower velocity and are less likely to create a breeze that will disturb loose papers or other objects. Otherwise, blades are relatively equal in cooling capacity; their size and shape mostly affect style.

52-inch Harbor Breeze, Northshore (#190608) Ideal for a moist outdoor environment where durability is key, it comes with a rustproof guarantee.

Q Will it really help me conserve energy? 69-inch Harbor Breeze, Airspan (#77461) Perfect for the techno-savvy shopper, this fan’s innovative design has an extended width that can cool a room of more than 400 square feet.

Turning the thermostat up just 2 degrees and using a ceiling fan on hotter days can lower your air-conditioning costs by up to 14% over the span of a cooling season. Look for a fan with a reversible setting—used in cool months, it keeps heat from rising to your ceiling. Also, consider models that are ENERGY STAR® qualified.

52-inch Harbor Breeze, Baja (#113093) Evoking the laid-back feel of a tropical vacation, the wide blades of this fan resemble palm leaves.

Cottage style is hotter than ever, and beaded-board paneling is one of its essential elements. In this kitchen, beaded board was used for the backsplash and on the ceiling, but it also can be added in a living room, bedroom, bath, or an enclosed porch to lend a casual feel.

1

BEFORE

She loved her 1920s bungalow, but

2

the poorly configured appliances and limited work areas caused her to cook most of her dinners in the microwave. By applying small-space solutions and choosing products that matched her budget, she gained all the ingredients of a successful kitchen makeover—and the seamless cottage style is like the sweet icing on the cake.

What She Did The kitchen in this home was outdated and far less than functional. The homeowner had only 2 feet of countertop space and inadequate cabinetry.

THE CHALLENGE:

Moving the water heater from the kitchen to the attic freed up room for a pantry. The homeowner added floor-to-ceiling cabinetry and an extra workstation, gaining much more drawer and countertop space. She purchased new appliances, including a built-in dishwasher to replace the old portable model. Beaded-board paneling, wide trim and moulding, a farmhouse sink, seeded-glass cabinetry door fronts, and wooden countertops all contribute to the kitchen’s updated cottage style.

THE SOLUTION:

“I can’ t believe this is the same space. I actually have room to cook now.” 44

1 Easy-to-use cup pulls on the cabinet drawers feature a streamlined shape and convey a vintage look. 2 The wooden butcher-block countertops have a penetrating oil finish. They require special maintenance, such as reapplying oil, but the longevity and beauty are well worth it. 3 An island wasn’t possible in this small kitchen, but a cabinetry workstation providing countertop space plus storage for cookware fulfills the same purpose. The cabinets’ smoky-blue glaze adds a splash of color in the otherwise white kitchen. 4 Seeded-glass cabinetry door fronts impart the feel of a country cottage. Open shelving helps the room seem casual and inviting.

Small-Space Strategies Go vertical. Extend the cabinets up to the ceiling or crown moulding to use all available space.

Organize. Choose cabinets and drawers that offer organizational inserts, or add inserts to your existing cabinetry.

1 ■ Consider the use. Think about what you use daily versus infrequently. Open shelving and clear-glass cabinetry door fronts make it easy to see everyday dishware. Upper cabinets are perfect for special china or rarely used appliances.

2

Color counts. While kitchens are all about function, choosing white or a light paint color makes a small space feel airier and larger.

■ Appliance options. This homeowner chose full-size appliances, but there are options for smaller, hardworking refrigerators or ranges.

How To Manage Your Budget

At Lowe’s, we bring you new products that enhance and simplify your life. The Bosch AquaStar tankless water heater was an energy-efficient choice for this new kitchen.

A kitchen remodel is a wonderful investment, but it also can be a large expense. A few simple guidelines will help you contain your cash flow.

Unlike tank heaters, every part is replaceable or recyclable. Burners ignite without electricity when water is flowing. ■ All water parts are made from solid copper or solid brass. ■ Provides an endless supply of hot water. ■ Uses 4-inch pipes; this should be planned for in a newly constructed home or prior to a home renovation. ■ This energy-saving model may qualify homeowners for a $300 tax credit. See Lowes.com/Energy for details. ■ Learn more about buying and maintaining a water heater at Lowes.com/WaterHeaters. ■ ■

Expect the unexpected. Figure out the maximum amount you can afford for your kitchen remodel, and then decrease that amount by 20% to determine your budget. You’ll have padding for the unplanned expenses that almost always occur.

1 A beverage cabinet above the refrigerator holds wines, ciders, and sodas fit for special occasions. 2 This stainless-look refrigerator has the sleek metal vibe but is less expensive and easier to clean than stainless steel. 3 A water heater once filled this space, which now serves as a pantry. A new, more efficient tankless water heater was installed in the attic. 2

■ Pick and choose. Decide what’s

3

most important to you. Do you want new countertops but like your range? Then opt for the countertops of your choice, such as granite or butcher block, and pass on the new range. Alternately, cabinetry and countertops can siphon the bulk of your budget. If you’re okay with the look of your kitchen but want the latest culinary technology, then replace all your appliances and simply paint your cabinets. Stick to the plan. You can make small decisions that add up to a big expense. Take a step back before adding new items that weren’t in your original plan.

turned-weekend-getaway had great architectural bones and a solid structure, it lacked clear walkways, vitality, and cheerful color. Taking design cues from Upstate New York cottages as well as traditional Greek Revival schoolhouses, the homeowner began the update by creating better access to the front and side entrances via a walkway made with interlocking pavers. With both entrances clearly marked, the homeowner could focus on the landscape. A white picket fence, also reminiscent of traditional Colonial style, creates a border around the home’s lawn and complements the front railing. Small boxwoods were added in front of the railing and along the fence. In the planting beds on the side of the house, the homeowner planted ornamental grasses and shrubs, and finished the look with planters and a trellis. Green-and-white striped awnings over the front windows enhance the color scheme, while yellow paint on the door provides a focal point for passersby. A heavy pitched entry was removed for a fresher look.

After relocating to the Southeast, this New England native wanted to bring a Cape Cod feel to her new home. She began the transformation with the front windows. Thick casing and cross-shaped panes make a bold statement across the exterior and help to establish the home’s presence. Next, the homeowner replaced her existing siding on the front of the house with cedar shingles to capture the New England look. She plans to cover the remainder of the exterior at a later date. To expand the existing entry’s tiny stoop, she had a landing built at the top of the steps so that she would have more space when entering the home. The cloth awning was replaced with a wooden pitched roof and post. Also during the renovation, the homeowner’s contractor installed a new wooden railing to replace the small metal support that was not compliant with the modern local building code. Finally, a new wooden door, painted a calm deep green prior to installation, adds a touch of color to the entry. Finishing touches include lighting and new shrubs with mulch.

Come OnIn A new entry door can make your house feel like a home.

Sure, you want a door that adds value and curb appeal, but you also want an entryway with that special something that brings your home to life. It might be the door to the first home you’ve owned, or to the home where you’ve finally decided to settle down. Whatever your future holds, make sure you choose a door that suits your home or style. The right door will increase your home’s value and give your entrance the kind of allure that makes neighbors, friends, and family members want to come inside.

MakeAn Entrance You have a lot of options when it comes to entry doors, and you want to choose the one that’s just right for your home. Here’s how. FIND YOUR STYLE AND SHAPE

1

Numerous choices for glass inserts can truly personalize your entry. Look for: ■ a design style that appeals to your taste and suits your home’s architecture, whether it’s traditional, Craftsman, old-world, or modern. ■ a shape that will let light into your home, yet still provide your desired level of privacy; choose from a wide selection that includes everything from a small semicircle to two full-length rectangles. ■ caming options—in finishes such as platinum, brass, and wrought iron—that will enhance the glass inserts.

2

SELECT A DOOR MATERIAL

Wood, steel, and fiberglass are the materials of choice for entry doors. Each has its own unique set of benefits. If you want: ■ a budget-friendly door with an authentic look and feel, then a wooden door may be best for you. ■ a hearty door that resists cracking and warping, consider steel or fiberglass. Fiberglass doors are available with smoothsurface exteriors or with wood-graining. ■ an energy-efficient entryway, ask about the door’s insulation and if it comes with weather stripping. These features can help save you money on energy bills.

3

COMPLETE THE LOOK

After deciding on your glass inserts and choosing a door material, add the extras that will customize your entry and pull the whole design together. Consider: ■ a transom (a glass insert installed above the door) that will complement the shape of your door’s glass inserts. ■ sidelights, which also are available in a range of designs; opt for just one sidelight, or flank your door with a pair. ■ Reliabilt’s flexible design plan, which allows you to choose your features from nearly 11,000 options, and then have your door built to your specifications.

the store was doing, they contributed to help finish out the costs,” Devitt says. In addition to landscaping and smaller projects, the Van Buren store employees instructed the all-women volunteer team in home-building. Held in one-hour sessions, the how-to classes were offered at the store on Saturdays throughout August and September. Eight employees led the sessions starting with power tool use and safety, and moving to framing, roofing, installing siding and drywall, trim work, and painting. Work on the house took place on Saturdays, and despite a few weather delays, construction and landscaping were completed in early December as scheduled. Because of the homeowner’s special needs, Devitt explains that the house needed to fit the footprint of a Habitat house and also be accessible for everyone, which includes specific design elements such as an open floor plan, wider hallways, and more space to accommodate the homeowner’s wheelchair turns. Volunteer coordinator for the Women Build group, Becky Neighbors, credits the invaluable assistance of the store team. “Lowe’s recognized the need to help equip the women of this area,” she said. “We have enlisted a small army in this project, and I would like to thank the Lowe’s and Habitat partnership for giving us this opportunity.” Lowe’s is the underwriter of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program, which empowers women to help eliminate substandard housing.

When it comes to actively serving their community, Lowe’s employees are a dedicated group. Giving their time and sharing their talents, the employees of the Van Buren, Ark., store helped to provide a local resident with safe and affordable housing that accommodates his lifestyle. As part of a five-year partnership between Lowe’s and

Habitat for Humanity, store employees participated in a construction project that was coordinated by the Arkansas Valley Habitat for Humanity (AVHFH). Part of the Women Build program, the home was built in Van Buren over a period of four months in late 2006. In a wheelchair since the age of 13, the 39-year-old Habitat homeowner moved in and out of inadequate subsidized housing over the past several years. He desired an affordable home where he could live independently. Recognizing his need, AVHFH approved his new home application and called on Lowe’s for help—having worked on a previous project with AVHFH, the Van Buren store welcomed the chance to pitch in again. “We felt there was a real need here,” said Ivan Devitt, store manager. A $15,000 grant from Lowe’s helped fund the construction, but contributions also poured in from around the community. “When other businesses in the area found out what To find information on how universal design can be incorporated into your home, visit Lowes.com/UniversalDesign.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN

These elements make a positive addition to any project, whether you are renovating or building a new home.

UD products such as these can help make your home safer and more comfortable.
