p.s. Enhance your outdoor projects. A new product at Lowe’s, semisolid stains by Cabot come in a variety of hues and contain more pigment than semitransparent stains. This extra pigment gives your wood added protection from ultraviolet rays, increasing the life of outdoor projects. The deeper pigment also makes it easy to achieve the desired color in fewer coats, while still allowing the wood’s natural grain to show through.

ou can still create an eye-catching mailbox even if you live in a condominium or apartment. This project offers neighbors an opportunity to work together and share the cost of sprucing up their indoor postal area. New dark-bronze wall-mounted boxes with satin-nickel lids inspired this industrial look, complete with metallic paint. Silvery stripes complement the lids, while the rose color provides a warming effect. The retro-style numbers affixed with double-sided adhesive add both fun and function. The pinkish-gray wall supplies a soft backdrop for the urban color palette.

his mailbox project starts with a simple cedar post. (Instead of a concrete-filled hole, a sturdy stake keeps the post in place.) The traditional brass numbers stand out against a caramel-hued semitransparent stain on the beautiful wood grain. Atop the post is an elegant mailbox that’s attached with wood screws. Placed so that it does not cover the numbers, copper tubing forms the perfect support for a climbing vine. Evergreen shrubs, blooming flowers, and a bed of mulch complete this welcoming look.

trend update

In our quest for well-being, our homes become places for restoration and rejuvenation.

YOUR HOUSE CAN BE DESIGNED TO LOWER ANXIETY AND BOOST YOUR HEALTH.

c

onsider good vibes, as well as clean air and water, as much a priority in the home as great style. You make simple adjustments, such as exercising and eating right, to feel and look better. Likewise, small changes to your home, from the colors you choose to the water you drink, can make a big difference.Think about your home in a whole—and healthier—new way.

mind, body, & spirit Color can have a profound effect on your emotional health. Bright, warm tones energize; soft, cool shades provide calm and balance. Also, our attitude toward particular rooms can influence well-being. In bedrooms, clutter and televisions can make true rest and relaxation difficult. Instead, the bedroom and the bath should be sanctuaries—free of things that remind us of responsibilities— and full of comforting textures and soothing scents and colors. Consider other areas of the home, too; for example, innovative dishwashers and garage doors with silencing technology reduce household noise.

purification Clean air and water in your home will go a long way toward promoting a healthy family. Air and water purifiers‚ from small at-the-source methods to wholehouse systems, are designed to fit any space or need (see “Get Cleaner Air & Water” on page 16 for more information). Some indoor plants (such as the peace lily shown at left) actually clean your air by neutralizing toxins.

environment A healthy home is achieved by considering the whole environment. Energy- and water-efficient appliances are great for conserving natural resources and reducing utility bills—and providing peace of mind. Renewable flooring options, such as bamboo (shown at right), cork, and some hardwoods, offer sensible style while preserving resources.

WHY YOU’D WANT ONE

Starts purifying water at its point of entry— the main waterline.

Your entire home benefits from cleaner water, from the kitchen to the bath. It can even extend the life of your appliances.

Removes specific minerals from water before it is distributed to appliances and faucets. It’s installed where plumbing enters your home, alongside your water heater.

This long-lasting investment helps prevent mineral buildup in pipes, appliances, and faucets, while also giving clothes and dishes a cleaner rinse with less residue. Lowe’s offers free testing strips to help determine your home’s water hardness.

Purifies the water used for drinking and cooking with an attachment for your kitchen faucet.

It attaches to your faucet without tools.

Provides an out-of-sight filtration system for water from your kitchen faucet.

It’s installed easily underneath your kitchen sink for filtered water on demand. Some systems require specific faucets.

After filling it with tap water, the filter removes impurities.

This product is inexpensive and can give you filtered water within minutes. It’s also mobile, so it can be used throughout the house or taken to work.

Reduces impurities in household water; made readily available in refrigerators with water and ice dispensers.

Cleaner, cooler water will be at your fingertips.

Cleans air as it circulates through the ventilation system, improving air throughout the house. Look for a high MERV rating for greater efficiency.

It’s an effective, easy-to-install choice that typically works with your existing HVAC system. A clean filter performs best, so aim to replace it about once a month.

Used in a specific room, it removes airborne particles, including dust, mold spores, pet dander, and pollen. Purifiers using HEPA filters are most effective. Look for products with a CADR appropriate for the room’s size.

Model variety allows you to customize the amount of purification power for a specific space. The unit’s mobility lets you target problem areas.

Makes dry air more comfortable by adding moisture to it. Choose a cool- or warm-mist model in a size well suited for your space.

Humidified air soothes parched throats and minimizes static electricity that may be harmful to electronics. Protects wood floors and furnishings. Provides comfort at a low temperature setting.

Removes moisture from the air. Needs to be emptied periodically. Purchase based on the size of the room and level of moisture.

Drier air inhibits the growth of mold and mildew in damp areas, such as baths and basements.

Save With ENERGY STAR® A qualified air purifier is 35% more energy efficient than a standard model and can save up to $16 annually on utility bills.

Save With ENERGY STAR® A qualified dehumidifier removes the same amount of moisture as a similarly-sized standard unit, but it uses 10 to 20% less energy.

what they did The Challenge: In their new lake house, the family wanted a kitchen with plenty of room to entertain guests and a style that’s reminiscent of a simpler time. The Solution: The homeowners incorporated classic elements, such as a large central island and open-storage cabinetry, and the latest in appliances. The result is a cozy kitchen perfect for entertaining, as well as quiet family dinners.

CUSTOM STYLE 1 Working with a Lowe’s employee, the homeowners matched various styles and finishes to create a customized design for the cabinetry and the hutch. Blending light and dark woods creates the impression that the furniture was collected separately over time. Incorporating two countertop colors continues the mix-and-match approach. The dark countertops along the walls contrast with the light-toned cabinetry and sage-green tile backsplash. On the island, dark wood pairs with a light cream-colored countertop. The addition of spindle moulding and beaded-board paneling also gives the cabinetry the look of stand-alone furniture.

hese homeowners envisioned a casual kitchen that would convey their love for the countryside. They now have ample space for preparing and cooking meals, as well as a comfortable room where the family can gather. Drawing inspiration from early 20th century farmhouses, the family selected different cabinetry styles, colors, and wood types to reflect the era’s use of mixed furniture in the kitchen.A large island, the focal point of the room, provides plenty of workspace and a spot for entertaining guests. To stay true to a farmhouse feel, the homeowners splurged on a large white apron sink and a bridge faucet. They also included a light fixture that echoes traditional style as it illuminates the island and casts a warm glow on this kitchen at the family’s vacation getaway. VINTAGE APPEAL 2 Providing plenty of additional storage, the hutch is complete with elegant moulding, glass-front cabinetry, and beaded-board paneling. The hutch hardware has a slightly different look to set the piece apart. 3 The apron sink is a new trend inspired by days past. Its large, deep basin is perfect for cleaning pots and pans. The bridge faucet, termed this due to the connector “bridge” between the faucet and handles, adds antiquity to the sink. 4 The cabinetry’s cup pulls are reminiscent of the early 20th century and complement the other bronze elements in the room. 5 Above the island, the bridge-style light pendant with a bronze finish coordinates with the cabinetry hardware and the bridge faucet. Additional general and task lighting is provided by recessed and under-mounted cabinet lights.

magical makeover: kids’ bedrooms

teen retreats in rooms that can mature over time. what they did The Challenge: These two families needed to update their teens’ bedrooms, keeping in mind that the spaces might be used differently in the future—when the kids leave for college. The Solution: The addition of sophisticated color palettes, built-in cabinetry, flooring, lighting, and window treatments ensures that the rooms can become guest spaces or home offices later. Creative projects and unique accessories express the teens’ fun personalities in the meantime.

his teen wanted a hip, happening bedroom where she could prepare for each day, do homework, hang out with friends, and relax. But knowing that their daughter would leave for college in a few years, Mom and Dad needed to carefully select updated products and features that also would suit a future guestroom or home office. The family began by choosing a color palette of soft blues, rich pastels, and crisp whites. Then they decided on durable carpet, ample lighting, and lots of storage and display areas. They finished the room with a one-of-a-kind headboard and bedside shelving. The new space delights the teen, as well as her parents, and promises to be functional for years to come.

38

A great creative idea—this 24-inch aluminum water-heater pan is used to protect the plush carpet from spills during manicures and craft projects. In a light blue shade that complements the wall color, the carpet adds warmth, muffles sounds, and is a comfortable flooring option. 䊳

Base cabinets and shelving units serve as a dresser and two bookcases. The middle base cabinet remains doorless for cubby-style storage; fabric drawers keep items packed away.

The family selected built-in kitchen cabinets topped with a solid-surface countertop and a simple mirror to create a dressing table. The countertop withstands heat from curling irons and hair dryers, while its aqua shade complements the wall color. The chrome-finish lamps, which provide task lighting, coordinate with the satin-nickel knobs. The creative teen embellished the shades with beaded fringe for added personality. 䊴

By attaching screw eyes to the top of five basic frames and weaving in ribbon, the teen finds a clever way to hang her favorite photos or prints.

The front face of the assembly should have the louvers angled upward. On the back face of the assembly, place a mending plate approximately 6 inches from the upper edge along the glued side edges as shown at right (A). Position a second plate the same distance from the lower edge, and then place the remaining two evenly spaced between them.Attach the plates using wood screws. STEP 3: Keeping the front face down, cut the netting to cover the back of the entire assembly. Using a staple gun, attach the netting to the upper edge of the door first, and then along the other three sides. STEP 4: Attach the netting to every fifth or sixth louver using a bead of super glue across the entire edge. This will keep items from dropping behind the headboard. STEP 5: Mount the headboard to the bed frame, or secure it to the wall with self-fastening strips as shown at right (B). STEP 2:

arthy style is gaining popularity in garden design, and grasses stand at the forefront. From tall to small, many thrive in full sun, and they can be heat resistant and drought tolerant. Use them for supreme texture in containers and borders, or as accents and ground covers, and watch their colorful show from summer into fall. Kelly M. Smith

silver grass This clump-forming selection has slender, arching dark-green foliage with a silver midrib. Showy summer plumes bloom atop 5- to 6feet-tall stalks and last into winter; fall foliage turns orange. It requires moderate water and sun. Combine with grasses of different hues and with rich-colored perennials, such as black-eyed Susans. Maiden grass (shown at right) is a great selection of silver grass.

fountain grass Grown for its colorful foliage and feathery summer seedheads, this grass forms clumps that are maintained easily. It loves full sun and regular water. Use purple fountain grass (shown at right) in containers or borders, and pair with shrubs or perennials, such as ‘Homestead Purple’ verbena (as shown below in the containers).

zebra grass Broadly arching yellowish foliage grows 5 to 6 feet tall. It requires moderate water, takes full sun or partial shade, and pairs nicely with a warmcolored evergreen, such as Japanese barberry.

Aztec grass The striking striped foliage of this liriope cousin normally grows 1 to 2 feet tall. Its lavender flowers bloom in fall. An ideal border and container plant, it also can be used as a ground cover. Combine with other grasses, such as purple fountain grass, and perennials, such as verbena.

Mexican feather grass Thin bright-green leaves form erect clumps. Its flowering stems divide, becoming very thin and greenish gold. This grass tolerates drought conditions and works well as a ground cover around rocks and on slopes. Try it with juniper and rosemary (both have a bluish hue) for a hearty, earthy look and feel.

water wise

Water plants less often, but deeply and slowly. This way, you won’t have to water daily. Also, try a few innovative products that will help make this important task more enjoyable and productive. • The ReelSmart Water-Powered Automatic Hose Reel (#160163), shown above, evenly winds up to 125 feet of hose. It’s unobtrusive near your house, and it requires no electricity or batteries because it’s powered by the force of the water. • Let your soil help you and your plants. Sta-Green Moisture Max Potting Mix (#211255) contains AquaGuard, a watercontrol formula that releases water to roots as needed. This product is especially great for containers. • Conserve water, and water less often. Agrosoke Root Watering Crystals (#27032) get moisture straight to the roots, where it’s needed most. Added to the soil, the water-absorbent polymers work for outdoor as well as indoor plants. • A constantly kinking hose can make watering inefficient. The Apex Neverkink Hose (#6082) is self-straightening and guaranteed not to tangle. It also remains flexible even during cool nights. • Watering from the top may cause fungus and other diseases, plus much of the water may evaporate in very hot weather. A Swan Soaker Hose (#88201) seeps water from the hose to soak the roots, and it saves up to 70% of water used. This also can prevent soil erosion and puddling.

nature trails are out of reach for many schools—but Lowe’s is helping to change that. With Outdoor Classroom grants, funding is provided to schools around the nation for hands-on learning environments. “This program expands our opportunities to support schools in the communities we serve, by helping teachers create outdoor classrooms—customized to their students’ needs and interests,” says Larry D. Stone, chair of the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. The program is the result of a partnership with International Paper and National Geographic Explorer! classroom magazine. Since the program’s start in September 2005, 32 schools have received a total of almost $80,000.A combined total of $250,000 will be awarded during the 2005–06 academic year.
