We’re a household name in the home improvement business. But we weren’t born yesterday. Learn a little more about the first 60 years of the blue-roof warehouse, and let’s build something together—today and in the future.

4’ 6

H. Carl Buchan

and his business partner, James Lowe, operated the Lowe’s North Wilkesboro Hardware Company, a small hardware store in North Carolina, offering basic items from overalls to wash tubs, work boots, and horse collars. The pair had two goals: to provide quality home improvement products at the lowest prices and to deliver superior customer service. Later, with the desire to expand, Buchan bought out his partner in 1952, and he opened the company’s third store in Asheville, North Carolina. He concentrated on selling only hardware, appliances, and hard-to-find building materials.

’50s ✦

’60s–’70s

’82 ✦

’06

By eliminating wholesalers

and dealing directly with the manufacturers, Lowe’s established a lasting reputation for low prices. As sales grew and word spread about his quality products, Buchan opened additional Lowe’s stores throughout western North Carolina.

The company went public

in 1961 and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange by 1979. During this time, U.S. housing development soared, and professional builders became Lowe’s strongest and most loyal customers.

Lowe’s celebrated

a billion-dollar sales year, earning a record profit of $25 million. A new type of customer hammered in the higher sales: creative and self-sufficient homeowners with a “do-it-yourself” attitude toward improving the value of their properties.

’94

To accommodate new customers

and maintain its valued relationship with building contractors, Lowe’s expanded its stores both in inventory and size to reveal today’s large stores.

With plans to expand

store openings to Canada in 2007, Lowe’s shows no sign of slowing down. The company averages an opening of one new store every three days, some as expansive as 117,000 square feet. Lowe’s firmly stands as the second largest home improvement retailer worldwide and the seventh largest retailer in the U.S. While times have changed, Lowe’s values have not. Customers still expect—and find—quality home improvement products at the lowest prices.

Cut several lengths of white mason line (#66516)—found in the hardware department—about 4 inches longer than the panel’s width. Cut several more lengths about 4 inches longer than the height. 4. Arrange the mason line on the panel in an overlapping crisscross pattern, as shown. 5. Secure the mason line with furniture nails (#58199). Pull each length tightly between the nails. 6. Trim the loose ends to about 1⁄2 inch in length, and then fray them.

Customize a basic shade. 1. Cut a piece of wallpaper—we chose black-and-white checked paper (#157083) —in a size that fits your lampshade. (The wallpaper will need to be 1 inch wider and 11⁄2 inches times the shade’s circumference.) 2. Place the wallpaper, pattern side down, on a flat work surface. Mark at 1-inch intervals along both long edges. 3. Pleat the wallpaper accordion-style, folding at each mark. 4. Use a hole puncher to punch a hole in the center of each pleat, about 3⁄4 inch from the edge of the wallpaper. 5. Thread picture wire (#52695) through each hole. Secure the edges using a hot-glue gun. 6. Place the wallpaper over the shade, as shown, and tighten the wire. Twist together the wire ends, and snip off the excess.

chose black-and-white toile (#224858). Iron the curtain, and then place it with the pattern side down on a flat work surface. 2. Remove the seat from a wooden chair (this works best with an already-padded seat). Place the seat with the top side down on the curtain. 3. Trim the curtain, allowing about 3 to 6 inches beyond the edges of the seat. 4. Use a staple gun to secure the curtain’s edges to the seat’s underside, working around the seat. Wrap the curtain tightly, and tuck the excess smoothly at the corners. 5. Paint the chair in a shade that coordinates with the curtain, before reattaching the seat. We used red spray paint (#39351). 6. Cover additional seats (one 70- x 72-inch curtain will cover approximately six average seats).

Unwind & Design Wallpaper Vase Step 1: Measure the height and circum-

ference of the paint can, and cut a strip of paintable wallpaper to fit around it.The length of the strip should be slightly longer than the circumference to account for overlap. (One roll of wallpaper can make approximately 30 vases.) Step 2: Apply several 2-inch-long lines of glue around the can, and then attach the strip of wallpaper.Allow to dry. Step 3: Paint the wallpaper, and extend the paint to cover the lip of the can. Step 4: Fill the vase with freshly cut flowers, and add water.

layered lighting plan can significantly affect a home’s curb appeal, ambience, and safety.Take this home, for example. A new terrace and entry staircase provide gracious space at the front exterior, but adding the right lights completes the overall look. The previously dark steps, which were difficult for guests to navigate, are transformed into warm and welcoming stairs. In the evening, the garden beckons with a soft glow. Now the terrace is much more inviting—encouraging relaxation and entertaining throughout the day and in all seasons. For this home, the first step in the plan was to have a contractor build 12-gauge low-voltage wire into the front porch and install electrical boxes in the brick during the renovation. Then the homeowners installed most of the new outdoor lighting featured here—surface lighting, pathway lights, and floodlights—in just good to know one weekend. With a layered approach, A layered lighting plan uses the entire effect proves seamless and multiple types and intensities of truly celebrates the space. lights placed in tiers, producing

ou can experience a place by savoring native flavors and aromas. You also can come to know a place through colors—the colors of its foods, landscapes, and architecture. Imagine the intense hues and textures at a Middle Eastern bazaar, with a bright rainbow of fabrics that were dyed using local plants and spices. Or picture an African vista, painted with many subtle shades of green and brown. Now, incorporate these places and sensations into your home with this season’s palettes.

neutral ground Harvest colors that are inspired by exotic landscapes dominate the neutral palette.Think of coffee plantations, rice fields, and oyster beds. The colors of these settings can provide a backdrop in a space, covering large surfaces, such as walls, ceilings, and floors. Old-world chestnut hues also give depth to a room. Start with this palette as a base, and then use accents of color to create the perfect fall look in your home.

worldly goods From vivid to serene, the fall palette includes a melting pot of accent colors. Oriental rug designs serve as the muse for enriching base tones, such as rich browns and butternuts. Brighter colors in aquas and sunny yellows add festive flair. Elements of the sea are calming companions to these shades, with soft blues and greens. Bring accent colors into a room with pillows, rugs, lamps, and other accessories.

seasonal star Red-purple shades, such as raspberry, are well on their way to becoming classics. Prominent in many cultures, such warm, alluring colors can be found on a sari in India or a serape in Mexico. Use with abandon, or sparingly as an accent. magical makeover: kitchen

W

hat does a professional chef want from her home renovation? “I just wanted a fabulous kitchen,” says this homeowner. Our makeover achieves her main requirement—and it also provides a quick lesson in creating a home kitchen with commercial style. Here are the key ingredients, according to this chef. First, “a gas cooktop with high BTUs cooks fast and gives you control that you don’t have with electric,” she says. Plus, a warming drawer—located in the central island, opposite the cooktop— allows for easy transfer once dishes are prepared; it also helps the island serve as a buffet. With granite countertops,“a cook gets a durable, long-lasting surface that also looks great,” she explains. And incorporating shelving into the kitchen keeps cookbooks close at hand yet distanced from the cooktop.“That way they don’t get splattered,” she says. To meet the homeowner’s desired level of “fabulous,” the kitchen’s style could not be neglected. She loves the retro look —achieved here through warm cream-colored cabinetry, brown countertops, metallic finishes, reliable hardwood flooring, and colorful accents. These elements give the space a fresh design without compromising the as-good-as-commercial kitchen. Take hints from this chef, and cook up plans for an update of your own using tips from the following pages.

what they did BEFORE

The Challenge: Prompted by her love of cooking and entertaining, this homeowner wanted professional-style appliances and an organized cooking area. But she desired a chic and cozy space too. The Solution: By removing the kitchen’s small dining area, this homeowner was able to incorporate a central island that includes both seating and storage space. Stylish, hardworking appliances and new countertops make it a joy to prepare large meals for guests.

1 A stainless steel farmhouse sink reflects a mix of modern and classic aesthetics. 2 Commercial-style appliances—such as the gas cooktop with the power of four 15,000-BTU burners and two 6,000-BTU burners—allow the cook to sauté, simmer, and warm numerous dishes at once. 3 A counter-depth refrigerator, featuring French-door styling, saves space by aligning with the cabinetry. The doors swing outward to provide full-width access for storing party platters. The refrigerator also has an internal filtered water dispenser. 4 The built-in dishwasher features quiet technology. The top rack can be removed for washing oversize cookware or even refrigerator shelves.

Metallic finishes contribute to the industrial look. 5 Long runs of cabinetry finished with an almond glaze, plus complementing bronze hardware, warm up the overall color palette. A home bath can be a retr etreat—a private space to wash aw es of the day.

1 The whirlpool tub provides the perfect spot for a soothing soak. 2 A brushed-bronze tub faucet with an antique look adds character. 3 The chandelier mimics the effects of lit candles for a rustic, romantic ambience. 4 Hand-scraped hickory planks are laid diagonally on the floor, with 16-inch sealed slate tiles in between. The tiles were set in grout to ensure an even transition from wood to slate. The planks also create a water-resistant tub apron and provide interest in the main vaulted ceiling and the bay-window ceiling.

ON THE SURFACE 1 Not just for housing dishes, maple kitchen cabinets work great for storage in a laundry area. Chosen in a bright, cheerful blue, the solid-surface countertop resists stains and heat. 2 Spice drawers keep clutter to a minimum, and a cabinet roll-away door hides a coffee station. 3 Four-inch blue and yellow ceramic tiles produce a colorful, whimsical backsplash that is easy to clean. Open shelving provides display space. 4 An easy neutral backdrop, beige ceramic floor tiles withstand water damage—a must-have in any laundry area.

small area + stacked solutions = out-of-sight space

When this homeowner remodeled her kitchen, she also needed to rework her small laundry closet. She opted for a full-sized stackable washer and dryer—realizing these would save more space than smaller side-by-side appliances without sacrificing efficiency. She chose organization items carefully—an ironing board and hooks hang on the inside of the closet door while small baskets fit above the dryer. The can-do laundry closet is functional yet does not infringe on kitchen activities, fitting with this homeowner’s priorities. play it safe Don’t forget these helpful tips from the Home Safety Council to keep everyone safe around your home’s fireplace. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and a carbon monoxide detector in at least one area. Test these devices once a month. ■ Open the flue completely before building a fire. ■ Store matches and lighters in a locked cabinet out of children’s reach. ■ Use a screen over the fireplace opening to prevent hot ash and sparks from escaping. ■ If you have a wood-burning fireplace, use only dry, seasoned wood. ■ Keep decorations and accessories that could ignite far away from the fireplace. ■ Never leave a fire unattended. ■ Create a home escape plan, and be sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency. ■

classic

approach In more spacious areas, a large fireplace with a raised hearth can become the focal point for a cozy gathering. Here, a new full-surround mantel frames a gas firebox. The mantel’s mission style is timeless, and the ivory color enhances its design. You can paint a mantel in any shade that coordinates with your decor.

1. Use classic tumbled-stone tiles to frame the firebox and to create a welcoming raised hearth. 2. Add a glaze, such as the light chocolate used here, to give the white paint a warm glow and to draw attention to the craftsmanship of the mantel. 3. Continue the mission style above the hearth by adding decorative moulding. Ours received the same treatment as the mantel—white paint topped with a chocolate-colored glaze—for a seamless look. In addition to the materials list, you’ll find a tools list, an illustration, and instructions for building this above-mantel display at LowesCreativeIdeas.com (Project #Sept0603).

If you have a small space, consider using paint and moulding to visually enlarge it. Create the illusion of a higher ceiling by applying a light color on a narrow top portion of the wall. Paint a darker shade on the large expanse of wall below. The room will feel brighter and more spacious.

enerally divided into categories according to where it appears on the wall, moulding is a type of trim in which a shape—called a profile—is carved into the surface of a flat board. It’s best to start your moulding selection by deciding where in the room you’d like these decorative elements. Then, choose from the many profiles and embellishments available at Lowe’s, or try stacking different trim types for a built-up look. Read on to learn more about the basic uses and placements.

CHAIR RAIL is applied approximately 36 inches from the floor. Its function is to protect the walls from the backs of chairs; it also is used as a division between paint and wallpaper or two different colors of paint. A chair rail can create a visual break in the wall or provide a surface for additional color. CROWN MOULDING (also called ceiling or cornice) covers the intersection between the wall and the ceiling. Flat-backed types are applied at the top of the wall, butting against the ceiling. Crown moulding crosses the intersection at an angle, so its back is in three parts—a broad, flat central area and angled edge sections. the adjacent wall. The outside edge of the casings is usually flat, to provide a surface for horizontal trim—such as a chair rail—to butt into cleanly. PICTURE RAIL MOULDING has a rounded

top edge to accommodate picture hooks. It is positioned high on the wall so artwork can hang from it—rather than nailing picture hooks into the wall. This type of moulding is especially useful in homes with plaster walls. PANEL MOULDING can be used to frame

a section of the wall below the chair rail. It originally was used as trim for raised panels on walls. Now, panel moulding is applied primarily as a decorative element—a portion of the wall can be painted or covered with wallpaper, and then framed with pieces of panel moulding.

This entertaining area receives touches of color and architectural detail. Stained pine trim and two shades of blue set a serene stage. In addition to using traditional base and crown moulding, dentil chair rail moulding was installed in an untraditional spot: 1 foot below the crown moulding. The area between the dentil chair rail moulding and crown moulding was painted in a lighter blue. This design draws the eye upward and causes the ceiling to appear taller.

two years. In addition to helping build homes with those in need, the program strives to increase community support for Habitat for Humanity. The First Families program kicked off this past May in Mobile,Alabama, where First Ladies Patsy Riley (Ala.), Janet Huckabee (Ark.), and Karen Baldacci (Maine) helped build a home for a Gulf Coast family displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The women worked alongside numerous local volunteers. Projects like this will continue in cities across the United States. Every day, Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program works with Lowe’s stores nationwide to teach women basic construction skills. Hands-on clinics covering topics such as framing, painting, and power-tool safety are available for Habitat first-timers who want to become involved in local efforts like the First Families program.
