Detail shot of original artwork Geology Skye, Central Complex

There is a long history of common ground between mapmaking and landscape art. Both represent and communicate the space around us. The fluid contour lines skimming the curves of the mountains, gradually bringing you up to the summits. The complex colours and shapes of geological maps, revealing the often hidden stories of the structures of the earth beneath our feet. I am compelled to tell these stories and communicate these vast and complicated landscapes through my work.

Time spent exploring the hills sparked a new interest for me; following a map, walking through glens, up steep slopes, and made me wonder how was this landscape formed? The more I thought about this question, the more it overwhelmed me, I needed a deeper understanding. I began reading about geology, studying topographical and geological maps, becoming even more overwhelmed by the enormity of it all. How tectonic plate movement, igneous intrusions, sedimentary layers and glacial erosion shaped the landscape I see before me is fascinating. The techniques used to create my textile maps combine free motion embroidery and applique with materials of thread and Harris Tweed. The delicately balanced mix of colour and shades in the cloth, taken directly from nature and flecked through the wool, provides me the perfect palette to represent the land. Working with cloth and thread to create my work gives the pieces texture, depth and life. Free motion embroidery is a manual technique: using the sewing machine in this way allows me to draw freely with thread, moving the cloth around to create similar organic shapes to those studied in person, in maps and in books.

GEOLOGY, SKYE ‘CENTRAL COMPLEX’ Image Size 66 cm x 54.5 cm

Limited Edition Giclee Print Printed on Hahnemühle Museum Etching 300gsm acid-free fine art paper using the finest archival inks Signed and hand numbered by Jane Hunter.

The geology of the Isle of Skye is quite varied. The area I’ve focused on in this piece is known as the ‘Central Complex’ and is home to the world-famous Cuillin mountains which are formed from two very different igneous units. The Black Cuillin are predominantly made from gabbro and peridotite whereas the Red Cuillin are mainly granite. The bright colours of the geological map have been used here to highlight this area of huge geological interest and immense natural beauty.

MESSRS PEACH & HORNE, KNOCKAN CRAG contents

This area of Assynt has long been referred to, in geological terms, as ‘The Zone of Complication’. Geologists studying the area became confused when they found metamorphosed rocks at the top of the sequence, appearing to be the youngest. But they had been metamorphosed, implying they had once been buried deep in the Earth’s crust. This was further complicated by the fact that the underlying rocks did not appear to have suffered this same treatment. It was here in the late 1800s that Ben Peach and John Horne solved the great puzzle of the geology of the North West Highlands. They proved that the ‘Moine’ metamorphosed rocks had formed many kilometres to the east and had been pushed westwards, thrusting above younger sedimentary rocks as a consequence of continental collision. In this piece you can see the light coloured thrust sheet of Moine rock pushing in from the east over the younger quartzites and limestone. Also depicted to the west of centre are the isolated Old Red Sandstone mountains of Cul Mor, Suilven, Canisp and Quinag.

Ben Nevis was formed by a ‘Caldera Volcano’ (Caldera being the Spanish word for Cauldron). Calderas form when the upper part of a volcano subsides, along a roughly circular fault, into a subterranean magma chamber. The landscape you see now has been sculpted by glaciers, as recently as 11,000 years ago.

Based on the contour lines used on maps to illustrate the elevation and shapes of the landscape, this piece depicts the rugged peaks on the north of the Isle of Arran. I have chosen a grey tweed for this piece to represent the granite rock that dominates this landscape, and also the mist that often swirls around the peaks.

This piece illustrates the Island of Arran. It also features strands and fibres of Harris Tweed pulled and stitched to create an impression of Hutton’s Unconformity, a geological formation evident just outside of Lochranza.

The geology of this part of the west coast mainly consists of Old Red Sandstone, with the mainland dotted with pyroclastic rocks ejected from volcanoes over 300 million years ago. To the North West of the piece lies the island of Little Cumbrae. The geology of this island indicates that a series of volcanic lava flows have cooled, leaving an amazing stepped landscape of basalt terraces. The colours of tweed I have chosen to use in this mapwork each represent a different type of rock evident in the landscape.
