Birchfield Gateway
Investment to 2009 - £7.1 million
Investment to 2009 - £1.2 million
We are working with the Homes & Communities Agency and Sandwell Council to transform housing as part of the wider regeneration of West Bromwich Town Centre. We will focus on the Eastern Gateway area, acquiring land to create up to 200 new town centre homes as part of a mixed use development.
We will revitalise this area by developing 500 new homes and are funding the demolition of three tower blocks prominently placed on the A34 gateway into Birmingham. This work will begin by the end of 2009. Low-rise maisonettes have already been demolished and privately owned homes acquired to make way for future development.
Aston Investment to 2009 - £2.1 million
Urban Living is a Government-funded regeneration agency operating in parts of North West Birmingham and East Sandwell. So far Urban Living has received £117 million public funding and has helped attract approximately an additional £410 million private investment (to March 09).
Newtown Investment to 2009 - £8.65 million Clearance of out of date properties has begun and a masterplan is being created to encourage the private sector to invest in this area. With support from Urban Living, work has begun on the development of a 168 home redevelopment on the former Crocodile Works site. The scheme has been led by Midland Heart Housing Association and completion is anticipated by autumn 2010.
Aston Pride New Deal for Communities (NDC) is re-designing the South Aston estate to make it more attractive and provide a wider choice of housing. The masterplan is nearing completion further to resident consultation. The longterm vision for East Aston is to make it a major ‘Gateway to Birmingham’. We have worked with Birmingham City Council to acquire and demolish properties. The City Council will continue improving homes and the NDC plans to focus on renovating privately owned properties.
Urban Living is funding the design enhancements of two prominent tower blocks being refurbished by Birmingham City Council to lift the look of the area. Design work will also be carried out to create a new Extra Care village at Pannel Croft.

Investment to 2009 - £24.6 million Greets Green Partnership is leading the way in this area working with Sandwell Council and Urban Living. When residents were consulted about what they wanted, they chose the radical option to redevelop a number of sites so that a choice of quality housing could be built. Almost 400 properties have been demolished bringing the clearance programme to an end. The Claypit Lane / Wattle Road site is being marketed to the West Bromwich developer panel whilst work on a new extra care village at Coppice Street will start by end of 2009.
Smethwick
The Lyng estate, West Bromwich Investment to 2009 - £1.4 million Urban Living has already supported the first phase of redevelopment delivered through a partnership with the Lyng Community Association and Sandwell Council. We will help to create an eco-village with over 400 homes. These will be designed to reduce energy costs for residents so that they can live affordably. With an additional £1.1 million funding from Urban Living, Barratts has made a start on the creation of a new public space in the area in advance of the next redevelopment phase.
Investment to 2009 - £9.6 million North Smethwick The Smethwick Canalside close to Smethwick High Street will be transformed by the development of around 800 new homes, starting with the development of Brindley Village 2 in 2011. The aim is to provide a range of leisure facilities and shops so that the area suits many different people. Windmill Eye / Cape Hill There are major plans to transform housing through clearance and redevelopment, and make improvements to shops and neighbourhoods. Some considerable progress has been made with many sites prepared for future redevelopment. Additionally, private development is already underway on the site of the former Mitchell’s and Butlers Brewery. Up to 2010, Urban Living will support masterplanning and consult with the community. The aim is to support the development of a long term, sustainable plan for the area working in partnership with Sandwell Council.
We’re working in partnership with Birmingham City Council to carry out a major programme of regeneration and redevelopment. Further to a masterplan plan being undertaken in the area, we plan to create sites for development of larger homes. This will complement the creation of an eco village by carrying out the retrofit of solar panels and other energy saving measures. In addition, we’re working with a local community group to convert the Old Bank on Villa Road into a multi-use community facility and, with other agencies, we’re creating further training and employment opportunities for local residents.
Summerfield and City Canalside Investment to 2009 - £8 million The Icknield Port Loop area has the potential to create some 1,500 new apartments and family homes, including affordable housing. We’re working with partners to help create housing growth in this area. External improvements have been made to over 600 existing properties, along with environmental improvements, with support from Birmingham City Council. Urban Living has also supported the creation of Birmingham’s first eco village in the Summerfield area through the de-conversion of a range of Victorian properties and installation of solar panels. This scheme was winner of the 2008 National Energy Efficiency Awards.
