All About Us
Spaces is a lifestyle furniture and home decor store helping clients create the home of their dreams and the house they want to come home to. Since opening our doors in November 2007, we’ve continued to innovate and improve our product offerings to enhance the Jamaican home decor and furniture market. From selling a small array of accessories in 2007 the business has fast expanded to hundreds of products from around the world. In 2009, expanding on the style and quality that Spaces had become synonymous for, the store entered the home furniture market offering home furnishings of elegance and exceptional craftsmanship. From custom-upholstered sofas and chairs to occasional tables, dining room and bedroom sets Spaces brings classic design to the comforts of home. In 2015 the success of our home furniture business led us to create our own locally made and designed line of furniture, The Gallery Line by Spaces. In March, 2018 Spaces opened its brand new state of the art showroom and décor centre at 7-9 Ardenne Road. The expanded 2500 square foot showroom showcases a fresh, contemporary designed aesthetic that is not only inviting but provides a canvas in which to inspire shoppers. Determine your needs Before you can start planning your renovation, you need to know what your ultimate goal for your remodeled space is. Who and how will you be using the space are great questions to begin asking yourself at the onset of planning your remodel. Identify your style Research current design trends and styles to determine your own personal style. For a living room you’ll enjoy for years, take time to research what you love and what you don’t. Do you prefer a clean minimalist look or a more formal and traditional aesthetic? These preferences will guide the type of furnishings and finishes you select for your home.
Use these living room design ideas to make your living room a comfortable, inviting place to gather with family and friends.

5. Determine your lighting needs. Often times we spend the majority of our time and budget on the furnishings and forget to consider lighting and the effect it has on a space. In a space where you watch TV, read books, play games and entertain guests, lighting serves an important purpose in both the function and look of the room. A good living room lighting scheme uses different kinds of light, set at different levels, that work together to make the space warm and attractive. Use a combination of ceiling lights, table lamps, sconces, and floor lamps to achieve balanced lighting in your living room.

Take stock of what you have Step back and look at your existing furniture and decor. To make space, get rid of furniture that’s damaged, outdated, too large, too small, or that you just don’t like anymore. If it’s a family heirloom or a piece you want to keep that doesn’t fit in the living room, give it a new spot somewhere else in your house.

4. Budget for the unexpected So, just how much is your living room renovation going to cost? The answer to that question ranges from a few thousand dollars for a paint job to a few hundred thousand dollars for major construction and magazine-worthy interior design. It is therefore important to consider all the elements that will ultimately make up your new living room. It’s important to know how much things are going to cost before starting your project otherwise, you could run out of money midway through the project. In the early planning stages of your project if you are considering any form of structural changes it is suggested to consult a professional. To find realistic numbers for architecture, construction and design services, talk to a few professionals you might consider working with. Share your ideas for the project and ask them how much their services for such a plan might run.

6. Choose your colour scheme A beautiful home should have continuity from room to room. When considering a colour scheme for your living room, don’t think of it in isolation. You have to think about all the rooms that connect with the space. Colour will set the tone for your room. A mostly blue and green room will have a calming effect, while vibrant colours (reds, yellows, oranges) are energizing. A neutral room of whites, tans, and grays is the perfect canvas for bright, bold accents. Like
everything else in your home, your colour scheme should reflect your personal taste and your selection of colours should invoke a feeling of happiness. Pick colours you’ll love seeing every day.

7. Consider size and scale All too often scale and proportion of home furnishing is not taken into consideration. The size of your living room and layout determines the appropriate scale of furniture required. Start by measuring your space (doorways and passageways included) to determine the size of the area you are working with. This will help you determine if you can accommodate that sectional you have been dreaming of, or a sofa paired with an accent chair. 8. Layout matters Living rooms are gathering spaces, so use furniture arrangement to promote conversation and interaction. Pull seating pieces away from the walls and arrange them to either face each other or a focal feature wall. 9. Make it personal Your home should tell the story of who you are and be a collection of what you love. Try to incorporate personal effects such as family photos and curated displays of treasured collections from your travels to truly make a space feel personal. Add accents and décor details Wall art, vases and rugs are key components in creating visual interest and depth to any design. Living room walls come alive when you use them to display art or collections that you love. Accessorize an otherwise bare coffee table or tv console with pops of colour inspired by the rooms overall colour scheme to create a beautifully styled living room.

Size, Style & Suitability
Creating a beautiful and inviting space to come home to is easier than you think. By following our Three S’s Guide to decorating you’ll cover the fundamentals - Size, Style & Suitability SIZE: Start by measuring your space ( doorways and hallways included) to determine the size of the area you are working with. This will help you determine if you can accommodate that sectional you have been dreaming of, or a sofa paired with an accent chair. STYLE: Inspiration is just a click away or a few magazine page turns. Keep a folder of the rooms you like and make notes about what you like about
each space. Is it how comfy a sofa looks, or the clean line and structure of its frame. Taking note of these finer details will help you to determine your design style. SUITABILITY: How will you use your space? Do you have kids? Do you entertain a lot? Does comfort matter more than style? Do you require any dual function features such as a pull out bed for guests? Once you have determined how the space will be used this will guide you in the search for furniture with the perfect features to suit your needs.
Whether the choice of coating is paint, wallpaper or tiles, adding interest to a single wall creates an interesting focal point for that room. A mix of old and new: Millennials have increasingly been drawn to designs that combine the sleek, minimalist lines of modern or mid-century modern furniture with the warmth of heirloom pieces. An example of this kind of inspired pairing is an Eames molded fiberglass chair with its sleek, architectural lines paired with a repurposed mahogany dining table. Natural Materials: The use of rustic elements is a trend that is on the rise. The use of reclaimed wood throughout a home or the use of wood in its more natural state with “live edge” tables is becoming increasingly popular. Tamara Harding’s exquisite “Mara Made” wooden pieces are a perfect example of this and correspond with larger trends towards other natural materials like stone and iron. Artistic Aspects: Adding something artistic and unique to the design of your space offers a degree of customization which is always important to the Millennial. Art is the perfect way to express individuality and leave a unique and distinctive mark on a space. Although rustic and artistic elements are definitely on the rise among the Millennials, the overall design scheme popular with this group is still essentially modern. Simpler designs with a minimalist feel are definitely the way to go for trendy!

Just as we can use fashion to express ourselves, interior design can also serve as a way of making a personal statement. One of the most famous interior designers today, Nate Berkus, said “Your home should tell the story of who you are and be a collection of what you love”. No other statement more accurately sums up the Millennial’s approach to interior design. Millennials are always looking to upgrade their living situations, whether that means moving into a nicer, more spacious rental or purchasing a home for the first time. While experiences rank high on the list of things that Millennials value, so too is creating a space that is a reflection of their unique personalities and an embodiment of design that reflects their tastes. Whether they are going for the modern farmhouse, contemporary or transitional looks, Millennials around the world agree that less is more and that interior design is all about smart, original, and creative designs that are both customizable and functional. With those parameters in mind, here are the top five trends influencing design for Millennials: Functional Storage: For small spaces, storage is key. Look for pieces that have more than one use and take up less space. For instance, instead of a typical coffee table, use a coffee table or upholstered ottoman that doubles as seating and storage. Accent Walls: One way to transform a room without spending a lot of money is to create an accent wall.

6 Proven Decorating Tips
1. Rug size is everything A small rug is like a dress that’s too tight. It’s just a bad idea no matter how expensive or beautiful it is. A rug forms the foundation of a room, defines the space and anchors your furniture, so a tiny rug that just fits under a coffee table will only emphasize the table and wont connect the rest of the room. A general rule of thumb: If your furniture floats, your rug should be touching if not holding all of that furniture. If your furniture is wall-bound, you can get away with only the front legs on the rug. 2. Editing is a master skill everyone should learn Think of your home accessories like jewelry for your room. You need to know when too much of a good thing is really a bad thing. With accessories sometimes less is more. Take a good look at your space and purge where necessary to avoid accents looking more like clutter and less like statement pieces. If you can’t part with your treasures, consider rotating items like a museum. You will discover and appreciate your possessions much more. 3. Mix and match high/low finds Matching is for preschoolers. Don’t feel compelled to buy the entire set. Invest in a good quality sofa with great lines and durable fabric and then find coordinating/contrasting accent seating that will give your space a personalized yet pulled-together look. 4. Great composition is key to good balance… …in a room, on a console table, on top of a dresser—just about anywhere in your home. Think about scale, shape and how objects harmonize. Ask yourself ‘which of these things in not like the others?’ Then eliminate the item that feels out of place. Grouping items of similar shape, colour, material or style, are a good way to make things feel cohesive. A general rule of thumb is that objects look better grouped together in odd number arrangements. 5. Pillows are more important than you think Pillows make a room feel cozy, so resist the urge to skimp when shopping. Also, remember that a pair of matching pillows does not have to live on the same piece of furniture. There’s no design rule that says so. 6. Shop your own house Breathe new life into an old possession by simply moving it. You’d be surprised how “old” looks new again when you place it in a different room or on a different piece of furniture.
