“Beneath Sky High” MARIO WORLD 3-6

WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LE-CORBUSIER, AND PURISM.

MARIO’S WORLD

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? Pictorial Space is a closed space that formed by optical illusions of replacement of objects when frontality and rotation concept are included . This could be seen by looking at the objects from different angle. Which is why it is called a’ fixated’ space and is not to be seen from the front side. Within each view from different perspective will lead to different space as if seen from different distance, depth will be changing too.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?

It can be implemented to color and texture to create shadow effect that represent depth and distance so that they won’t matter anymore in a drawing. This can make distance to be ‘represented’ inside drawing. The color black could be used to add the shadow effect. The variation of light and dark is also used to add vibrant and concentration to describe a texture.

In contrast, however, Le Corbusier refused to use this method and use white color to smoothen his drawing.

1ST MARIO’S WORLD

COMBINED MARIO’S WORLD

More-like, the combination of firstly done ‘sketch’ works.

These two scanned drawings are my raw hand-based drawings. Fully traced from the Mario worlds reference and left with empty spaces in between the front and back side. This is because it it still a basic drawing andsketch, I was yet to decide what kind of world I want my drawing to potray.

Here are the illustrations of how will my finished Mario World looks like.On the right hand side is the scanned version and on the left side shows outline attempt in illustrator. During my work on illustrator, I start to imagine what color I would use and how am I going to make it interesting. I knew that the effect of depth could be enhanced by the use of shadow and gradient tool, but I think that all of the subjects will be very monoton. So I decided to use illustrator just as a guide to make sure that my straight line is perfectly straight and parallel to any other lines by pen tool.

WEEK 4 READING: AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION.

Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? Projection is based on a fix point, everything projected from it expands (could be until infinity) in scale from the spot, which makes it to be ungeneralizable. While Pictorial space isn’t fixated by a point or a view, but it is always a 2d view formed from a fix rotation. The ‘guide lines’ in projection always meet at a point, that a 3d object could be formed through it. In case of pictorial space, the ‘guide lines’ never meet (no vanishing point) and it will always be parallel in a certain tilted angle.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? The practice of axonometric style of drawing has already been done long way before, but only named with different terms back then (parallel projection). It first arrives from the new thinking way of people from the early twentieth cen-tury. They challenge the old traditional art and begin to think of a new concept and creating a ‘new world’ as axonometric is suited to represent universal ge-ometry and infinite space. Axonometric is influenced and influence many as-pect of culture such as in scientificmathematically and art.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD Presented on the right is the overall finished prodeuct of my Mario World 3-6, “Beneath Sky HIgh”. First thing first, since the original world was only seen on a certain level from the front view, I think it would be interesting to play around with what actually beneath is or even above it, and I chose to focus on what’s beneath it. There are actually many varieties of world that I would like to add in, but due to time and space limitation, I end up drawing ‘magical forest’ and ‘boundless ocean’, which in my opinion, are relatively easy to draw. ‘Sky high’ represented from this illustration is the fact that the water isn’t given an end point, to show that the world 3-6 could be located very far above the ground. The blurry cut section of the cloud is design this way to follow the theme’s interpretation too. While ‘beneath’ is added to emphasize that there are life on the spaces below the cloud. There’s no particular story within the illustration, but it could show the daily lives of the 5 main characters who lives above the cloud and the other characters below them.
